I rarely regret buying natural-fiber, high-quality classic, but modern, items. I do get bored with items that are too basic, round-neck cotton tees, for example. I’m finding the collared Polo knit tops so much fresher and more interesting this season, and they’re just as comfy as plain tees. My best recent discovery was finding these in silk knit, my favorite fabric of all. I got them in black and in “white” (ivory) and immediately began wearing these so much. Classics with a twist!

This video came at the right timing because a few days ago I just realized the similarity between my favorite wide-leg trousers from COS with the pair that I used to own from UNIQLO (but ended up giving away because they didn't fit me anymore). I guess in the barrage of all trendy items and aesthetics, it's useful to look back to what we wore 10 or 5 years ago before we weren't so in tune or obsessed with fashion just to remind ourselves of what our "baseline" is. I get that personal style is never a constant but I guess these favorite pieces or silhouette definitely help as an anchor so we don't get too lost.

I love this comment because you're so right about how the more in tune with fashion you get it's like the more in tune with 'group think' you also get (what is that?!)
I always so admire a style outlier who is actually marching to the beat of their own drum 🎉😊

I would love to share this sometime! I do knit very slowly so I’ve been working on a chunky sweater for months 😂 I think most people would have finished in 2-3 weeks. Very likely in a vlog ❤️

@@DailyHelenJ I understand, I also am new to knitting and only do it between other activities so it sometimes spreads out to 1-2 months per project also.

I wear my clothes for years and years because I have almost the same body since I was 12/13 years old (I'm 32 now), I still have some stripped colorful turtlenecks from that time, I really love turtlenecks! another thing I re-buy are black boots and white sneakers, I use them until they get too worn out. A line skirts I have tons, I collected them through the years and wear them a lot :) I'm also a soft gamine and a new subscriber, love your videos ♥

A very good video makes me think. I always liked to dress well, but was doing that randomly. I started paying attention to style during Covid lock down as I had a lot of time on hand . I found a few RUclips channels where the ladies teach how to find personal styles. I finally figured out what type of clothes I truly like and suit me. I started to identify which items are my staples. Mine are a few fit and flare knit dresses , linen shorts, ankle length high waisted straight leg jeans , fitted thin sweaters…

I still love and wear some 40-year old wardrobe items, mostly long, wool coats and trench coats, some belts, bags and shoes. It’s hard to find equivalent quality today, at any price point. Especially problematic for me are the now-ubiquitous poly linings, I just can’t wear them. Rayon/viscose is very breathable, unlike the plastics, it makes all the difference in comfort. Also, wool-blend fabrics with synthetics are inferior, they attract tons of lint, don’t steam or iron well, and aren’t as breathable or warm as wool or cashmere.

thanks for your perspective on basic tshirts. They don't have to be basic but ones that have lovely details can become my basics. Also your tips regarding necklines and shoulder fit, these are such a great guidelines for me. I feel like I am 80% there with what suits me and your tips enable me to hone it down even more. Amazing how narrowing my focus can be liberating and lots of fun.

I’ve always loved your videos, they are so informative and inspiring. although your style is so different from mine, I still like to watch your videos. And now I think I found out why I still watch your videos even when it’s nit my style. I love that your pieces in here aren’t basics, like a simple white tee and that’s exactly how I view basics, my kind of basics.

I never regret buying classic silk or linen shirts and skirts (midi or mini, mostly), they are almost always permanent acquisitions for my wardrobe. (Cotton can be too hot for me in summer, so I wear linen then). I love the silk shirts from Equipment, a French brand and the silk skirts from Reformation or Quince.

white tshirts, blouses, brodery tops... they just do it for me. I still have some which I bought like 10 years ago too! they are all time classics and a good investment. go for quality even if indeed it's a little expensive but trust me... you will not regret it. they are not "a trend" but an all-time winner.

Comfortable trousers and ankle boots. I've had leather ankle boots since I was at school and bought my first high-top Converse at university (and wondered why it took me so long to get them!). I wear Converse high-tops pretty much year round, if it's not too cold in winter, and bought a pair of Thursday boots - the Captain - after seeing them styled by a couple of different RUclipsrs and realising they would fit perfectly into my wardrobe. And I wear them All. The. Time. It was a purchase I thought about, and I tried to find something similar, of a similar quality, more locally but couldn't, because everything I saw also had a zip which I don't want in a pair of lace-up boots.
I also found a leather bomber jacket recently - it's over-sized even on me, but for a winter jacket, I'm really looking forward to wearing it. I had a bomber jacket back in the 90s when they were everywhere, and wore it until it wore out, so I'm glad to have that silhouette again. Moto jackets aren't my style, but I did want a leather jacket, so with that knowledge I was hunting for a leather bomber, and found one on eBay.

This (and all your videos I have seen so far) have been so helpful! I am so lost with my style and hesitant to buy any new clothes in case it's the wrong style for me and I end up not liking it in a few months, so this video was exactly what I needed! And I love your video style, it's so informative and easy to watch! :)

Thank you for this thought provoking video. It’s been interesting to reflect upon what pieces have had longevity in our wardrobes and why. I have a good collection of Uniqlo graphic t-shirts and am impressed at how they keep their shape and colour. The only issue I’ve had is some yellowing around the neckline with the lighter colours (probably due to sunscreen etc). The thicker cotton tees are great to wear in our Qld cooler months but too much in the summer heat so I’ve bought a couple of the lighter airism tops and look forward to wearing them this summer.

I still think you are essentially cool-undertoned to neutral, Helen, not warm-toned. I would type you as a Soft Summer - cool, muted, light colors like powder blue make your beautiful skin really glow. Protect it always with high-SPF sunscreen, it’s a treasure.

Your white wide leg pants are too short with your shoes on. Also try wide leg pants without the front pleat…it will better suit your body.
