"The Big Red One" is a top-notch war film that sadly, is just about forgotten today. Kudos to What Culture for including Lee Marvin's outstanding performance here. 👏
Great shoutout to John Wayne's fantastic performance in They Were Expandable. It's a masterpiece by John Ford and one of finest war films ever made.
Also, Burt Lancaster in The Train and Lee Marvin in The Big Red One. Some amazing performances from Classic Legends in these war films. I definitely recommend all 3 of them.
Always amazing when the classics are remembered. Thanks, WhatCulture.
I swear you could almost put the entire cast of Rescue Dawn on this list.
Always good to see The Train getting a shout out. That movie is fantastic!
Giovanni Ribisi's death in Saving Pvt Ryan crushes me. I have a hard time watching it. Nothing else in the movie bothers me. But seeing him cry for his mother as he's dying even brings tears to my eyes writing about it.
It's so much worse as he self diagnoses himself "Oh God my liver ! "....knowing his physical fate with more certainty than most ...That and the kid bleeding out in 1917 get me every time....
Yeah, it is crushing but for me what was worse is the death of the jewish guy, getting stabbed very slowly in the chest while begging to be spared. I watched the movie few times, after the first time I skipped that scene in each of the next viewings
@@alexdawson868 I skip Ribisi's scene too. LOL
@@alexdawson868 Part of the reason for me is that it shows how many of the had just recently been living at home with their parents. So many were so damn young.
I've only ever seen the movie once because of that scene. I've tried to watch it again, but can't do it.
Tom Sizemore was amazing in saving private Ryan and pearl harbour. If he was one of my superiors in the forces, I'm sure a lot of real soldiers would gravitate towards him. Great actor.
Was good in Black Hawk Down too!!
@@darylhoskins5696 Definitely buddy, he's such a great actor, but does get kinda put in similar roles. But as they say, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. 👌👌
@@steve323f Agree ,sad to say He passed away.
@@darylhoskins5696 I never knew that. 😱. Damn.
Though he's odd, Ribisi is a very decent actor.
Great list - I'm going to add Keith David in Platoon.
YES. The guy who plays Rah also. Hell, add John C McGinley to that list for a guy who is obviously broken down to cowardice.
Glad to see John Wayne in "They Were Expendable" getting some love.
Great list- I especially appreciate you including Burt Lancaster in there. The Train is fantastic, and is too overlooked these days. The ending is just shattering.
Likewise, David Warner in Cross of Iron. I found that film even more shocking than Come and See, personally.
Love your content guys 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Holy Hell, how did I ever forget Elias was Casey Jones. I've watched him in everything since and somehow forgot that....now you've just broken me.
I would give a shout out to Tom Hiddleston as Captain Nicolas in War Horse - that last look before he's killed has always stuck with me - RIP
Roland Møller in the Oscar nominated "Land of mines" (Under sandet) is sublime.
I appreciated the way that they didn't just talk about newer war movies like "Saving Private Ryan".
Elias Koteas is a very underrated actor all around.
I felt Dunkirk was a lame movie. But the scenes with Tom Hardy really were the highlight of the film. I wish we saw more of him.
When Marvin's character finds Hamill's character pumping round after round into the concentration camp guard and just hands him another mag...yeah.
That was a great but gut-wrenching scene. Hamill was great in it along with Marvin.
I love The Train, such a great film.
I tried to watch Dunkirk three times in 70mm when it was released and fell asleep each time. 😂 I probably missed something 😂
I didn't fall asleep but I agree that Dunkirk was WAY overrated. Not sure why it gets rave reviews.
@@brentk4418 I'll give the film one more go at some point
Doubt she'll be on here, Julianne Kohler (Eva Braun) - Downfall
If you count Cold War, Martina Gedeck - The Lives of Others
Hell yeah about Melanie Laurent
The movie that comes to mind besides inglorious bastards to me would have to be Overlord. Granted it's fiction but it takes place in descend World War 2 but that French girl I cannot remember her name and I'm not looking it app because I'm lazy but she was really freaking good in that
The kid from 1917
That scene with the plane crash puts him in this convo
So glad Christian Bale in Rescue Dawn is number one. That movie and performance are so underrated.
Yup and He’s Satanic Scum too!
The train is an amazing movie
James Caan in A Bridge Too Far. "Would you look at him please, sir? Right now... or I'll blow your fuckin' head off."
saving private ryan showed you how it looked; thin red line showed you how it felt.
Unfortunately the film Passchedeal about the Canadian war effoft in WWI and Paul Gross is ignored
I have seen all but two of the films listed, intend to check out Recuse Dawn, but I own six of them. I disagree with Dunkirk and Tom Harding, I didn't care for the film or Harding, pretty much anybody could have done the role. But as always a good list.
Hardy. His surname is Hardy with a Y. 😐
Tom Hardy got about 10 lines of dialogue in "Dunkirk"? That's positively garrulous compared to his role in "Lawless" 😄
Hurt was amazing as The War Doctor but im fascinated by ehat David Warner could have brought to the role too.
Culture What Huh!?
One more: Frederick Forest - Apocalypse Now
RIP headphone wearers.
First? Edit:not first
You were 2nd. Sorry lol
@@xjcrossx ye, the other comment didn't load in :(
I'm not disagreeing, with your assessment of John Wayne the actor, but you should differentiate between him and a draft-doding John "I-have-bone-spurs-deferment-fourteen-times" Wayne, who also used homophobic and racial slurs against his fellow Americans during his 1971 Playboy interview.
