10 yrs ago, I wore NOTHING but high tops and 3/4 tops for "ankle support"....but over the yrs I noticed that half way through a season of sports, my achilles would be SORE to the touch and I figured out the high/three quarter tops were putting extra pressure on my achilles....i went exclusively to low tops and noticed my ankles got stronger and have not worn hightops since AND my achilles totally stopped bothering me....i guess i found/learned on my own observations but I agree with supports being more of a crutch even after the ankle sprain was healed and it was more for confidence in the extra support...in the end, i stopped using braces etc and let my anatomy do all the heavy lifting and it has made a world of difference...the right shoes and support for what I do has helped the most in the long run....great video Zach!!!
yes, unfortunately there's still lots of people haven't realized that ankle support is all about high tops and braces, it's the flexibility/footwork/strength training + a shoe that has a stable base and is the right fit that you need, it took Kobe to start wearing and vouching for low tops for people to start listen and stop talking nonsense, that a few extra pieces of cloth can totally support 120+ lbs of meat and bones lol
As a chronic inversion sprainer & no ankle brace user, the only thing that'll actually help is good torsion cushioned shoes, Band rotations & dumbbell dorsiflexion. Have improved stability but cant do anything about injuring ankle by landing on someones foot off rebound or shot
As a chronic ankle sprainer myself i felt a pinch in my ankle once you mentioned landing on someone's foot as you basically cant do anything about it. Just unlucky.
Retraining your babalnce and proprioception would work wonders more than any of that. There are plenty of protocols online they are tedious but they work its only way you are going to be able to train yourself to avoid an injury long term.
I have broken my right ankle 3 times and tore all the lateral ligaments in my ankle I have had 3 ligament reconstructions , I just thought I was clumsy , and this is the first time I have heard about the nerve thing , I just always have to watch what type of flooring I am walking on, if its uneven it's a nightmare I have no self righting reaction on my right ankle if the floor is uneven I can't correct my balance or footing and that ended up with a lot of dislocations of my ankle , when I was between surgeries . Because of his ankle issues I admit that Steph is one of my favourite players , because I know to some extent what he has been through, and yet he is still playing , I wish I could say that my ankle issues were as functional as his .
Steph hasn't rly sprained in a while though, right? Anyways the secret to minimizing ankle sprains y'all is working on proprioception, working on your toe spacing, getting into walking barefoot from time to time which strengthens the bones in your feet and nerve receptors, ankle mobility and end range strengthening, and wearing shoes that fit and have great support. I need to heed my own advice, but as an athlete I never sprained my ankle and once I did, the flood gates for foot issues opened. Left to right, to hip issues, to calves etc. When I was growing up we wore big clunky shoes all the time and I really think it caused a generation of people with bad feet. Kobe, imo changed the game with his shoes and approach. Because Lebron was so big, his space shoes was the other side of the coin. We are slowly deconstructing the shoe and I think we're better for it. Happy healing and holidays!
I’m 15 and have sprained my ankle 3 times and broken it once, now I wear the same braces as curry (they are very good). I still am strengthening it and have done physical therapy. I just don’t know if I will ever be able to not play with the braces or if there is anything I could do to test if I just have instability or just weak ankles compared the chronic issue like curry.
Great video. I have built a psychological fear when I play without ankle braces and haven't had an injury in months, but otherwise, I just don't feel confident on the court.
As a Warrior fan who's watches every game for nearly 15 years, I don't recall all these ankle sprains your referencing since his Brostrom surgeries. I've actually seen him roll the ankle while landing on another players foot and was able to shake it off with those tight ligaments. Most tweaks he has he's back in a couple games. I'm not challenging the nerve issue, just haven't seen what you're talking about. Anyhow, I have a Warriors game to actually watch. Peace!
True, it also doesn’t help he either doesn’t decide on his shoes or has no idea how to communicate to his team to make better ankle support shoes because this is a problem with practically every Curry shoe that exists.
Fractured my medial malleolus, and partially torn my ligament and tendon around it. My doctor was terrible, didn't bother giving me CT or MRI scan. Literally just 1-2 shot of X-ray, and put me on a cast. It was my first time ankle injury. I didn't do much research and believe w/e doctor says. I should've went to see more doctors. Now, my ankle is never the same again. 2 year later, I still can't dorsiflex and plantarflex as good as before. Pretty much stuck like this. Can't asian squat anymore. Walking down stair scares me now. Afraid to jump too high. 2 months ago I started wearing a brace like Steph. Now, I feel too insecure without it whenever I exercise. Went to see some physical therapists. Always found inexperienced therapists that gave absolutely no help. I'm so tired of health care system in the US. T_T
Yeah this is a very very common story I hear unfortunately - the grade of ankle injury is so so important to nail down because sometimes it can be improved or sometimes theres a good surgical option as well. If you ever need detailed discussion i do offer 1-1 consulting too over on my website linked in the description
I had to have total reconstructive surgery on my right ankle. Had to have 3 screws put in. Been 24 years and have had not any more problems with the ligaments or tendons anymore. However that surgery ended my sports career. Bonus though is I can walk now.
Hi doctor, I play football, I got an ankle injury, I feel pain at the back of my foot when i place my heel on a surface and point my toes down, but I can’t tell which part of my foot is hurt… even when I press my Achilles or my heel or try to reach for my taulus, I don’t feel any pain… I can’t tell what is injured 😢 12 weeks now 😢 Please help me
Great video. re: your point about any downside of wearing support - For a middle aged weekend warrior, where the loss of mobility is not an issue - is it wise to wear ankle support - i.e. the 1/x a week usage won't cause any reliance issues?
Great video! And great idea pairing it with your Curry 10 teardown. These topics do really well but your specialty in this area and sneaker tech makes this really unique! Get your 100K subscriber vid ready!
can ankle brace act like AFO? I had Foot Drop from accident 3 years ago, since then I can't move my toes and ankle. even my foot its felt numb. I'm using rigid AFO for 2 years now, but I need to change to more flexible brace because I don't want my muscle loosen more. hope someone can answer it
Is that a possible reason as to why under armour make firmer cushion set-ups for curry models so that he has better feedback through increased court feel as opposed to a plush cushion underfoot?
it seems that gameday footwear in many ways impacts the physics of an athletes movement. Why not train the body then let it perform with minimal footwear. Wide toe box? zero drop?
A lot of people do - in moderation - but the risks of stress fractures and Achilles problems is pretty high when over training with minimalist footwear hence why basketball shoes have the geometry they do
I’m so sick and tired of people complaining about AD shouldn’t wear low top shoes because he keeps getting hurt … but Steph who has the worst ankles, his signature shoes are low tops!? I was so pissed when people went on AD hurting his ankle when he jumped, turn 360 and landed on an opponent’s foot to turn his ankle but people said it was because he wore low top Kobes 😡
I have a question Zach. You previously mentioned in your original PG6 review that the react foam may not be good for heavier players but then in your Winter shoe recommendations you put it in both weight categories. What changed?
Very likely has done a lot of damage. However it’s not career ending he is still in his 20s, he can still build good habits to improve his mobility and strength to prevent further injury.
As I talked about in the video that’s clearly not the case especially when his problems started in Nikes. It’s a condition of his ligaments, if it were the shoes everyone would be breaking their ankles in them…

I know you're Foot Doctor Zach but I'd love to see a similar analysis of football linemen and knee braces
Weak hips, ankle mobility, ankle stability and core also contributed to his constant ankle issues.

Yes! 6'4 4th bad sprain in a year with these shoes no more. No ankle support....
Can you provide the exact brand or brands of ankle braces that Stephen Curry uses?

I keep rolling my ankle on others people shoes … i got good coordination ans proprioception but it’s just bad luck I guess

Yeah and just to help stop rotational forces

Seems to me some built arent built tough. Steph is delicate, but makes up for it with skill.
He does? It feels like he hasn't in a while
Curry has really injured his ankle since the Marcus Smart incident last season. Maybe make a video on how fragile anthony davis has been.
I have a question Zach. You previously mentioned in your original PG6 review that the react foam may not be good for heavier players but then in your Winter shoe recommendations you put it in both weight categories. What changed?
Still fine for heavier players just won’t last as long

You should do a video about why Lonzo Ball haven't been able to return to an NBA court. Did his shoe he was promoting ruin his career?
Very likely has done a lot of damage. However it’s not career ending he is still in his 20s, he can still build good habits to improve his mobility and strength to prevent further injury.
But Curry wore Nike's before when he starteed spraining his ankle
No way 🤔 slow ankle reaction? Can other parts of the body have this?
Yeah but it’s most pronounced in the feet because of body weight and their specific jobs during moving
Curry got injured wearing nike. Lmfao
Sprained it again 3 games into the 2024-25 season.
Yup
His old shoe are probably heavy
TBH UA shoes is just not that good....
What about stem cell?
I think curry can figure out to do what better so you don’t need to do this.
I love your channel doc but I can't continue watching this. Bone/ligament/sprain injury videos make me nauseated I'm sorry lol
kinda the same lol
