I rly liked how you explained things and gave context. Can you tell or does anyone know whether all exercises are relevant for a runner with ankle issues? Since running doesn't rly involve quick lateral movements
The easiest way to decrease risk of ankle sprains is to perform simple daily activities standing on one foot. Consistently brushing your teeth and washing your hands on one foot requires no extra time but can yield substantial improvements in proprioception and unilateral stability over time.
No, these activities only improve your non-dynamic stability and ankle endurance. They do not mimic high speed change of direction. The best way to get better at doing something is to do them more. Curry needs to learn how to land and cut more effectively.
After spraining my ankle, a physio recommended standing on one leg and bouncing a tennis ball against a wall for e.g. 30 for each leg. Once that gets easier, stand on a pillow instead to make the ground more uneven. This was just a nice cheap way to do the things here, but it's helped me a lot, can really feel those ankle, calf and shin muscles working.
I'm currently in physical therapy for an ankle injury that also came from basketball. We work work on very similar exercises. The additional exercises will help out a lot at home. Also I like how you went in depth about why certain exercises are important.
Dean Harris I tore a ligament in my ankle (ATFL) in late February doing box jumps and since then haven’t been able to run or change directions, play basketball (my favorite sport) , or anything like that. All I can really do is walk and too much of that causes soreness/discomfort. I got an x ray and they didn’t know what was wrong with it. After months of my ankle not improving, (stopped getting better at about 70%) I decided to get an mri. It’s a pain to schedule an mri with the insurance companies it’s kind of like a last resort thing. The mri showed tears and scar tissue and fast forward to today when I got my surgery a few hours ago. Going to be out for around 8 weeks on top of the last few months where my activity was limited to just walking. Timing is really bad as I was in the middle of training to become a college level basketball player. It really fucking sucks man. Ankles are no joke
This is gold! Please do more of these strengthening and training exercises for major stabilisers. A lot of us can benefit a lot from these and prevent some potential injuries.
I just finished rehabbing from a sprained ankle a couple of months ago... these are the exact same exercises my physiotherapist had me do. So helpful! Great video!
YO, I JUST WANNA SAY THANK YOU. Even going to physical therapy didnt teach me about the calf complex tightness test, and it quickly clearly showed me how much asymmetry my legs have. It also explains why I get so many left knee and ankle injuries, and how to rehab in a way so that they dont happen as often.
Thanks ever so much for this video, I'm a tennis player recovering from multiple ankle sprains and strains. They kept coming back almost everytime I went out and play especially when I slide around the hard courts
Just sprained my ankle badly for the second time. Thanks for this video, it makes me feel a lot better knowing I can work toward preventing it in the future
This was not the theory in the 70's and 80's which lead me to have a number of serious ankle injuries and eventually a full ankle replacement. This is a great tutorial, one I wish I would have had back in the day. Nice work Doc!
The best video so far ! as an NBA fan and Physical education student,, this type of content is just so benificial to me , can't thank you enough, really like this new video format !
Your videos are simply crazy good. Seriously only 3 dislikes on a video with tens of thousands of views. Keep doing dope work. Your videos are always a must watch. Your level of expertise and knowledge are astonishing!!
Try some knuckle push ups! Begin with doing those push ups on your knees instead of your toes, but you'll probably feel for yourself what you can and can't do
man i'd like to thank you because this is super useful, and i was wondering if you can do a similar video about knee injuries, since those are pretty common too
I suffered a nasty ankle sprain from playing basketball. I’ve already been doing resistant bands exercises but I didn’t know about the balancing, glad I saw this!
Brian, I rode BMX for the best part of my teenage years and had to stop riding in my early 20s because I suffered so many ankle injuries. I partially tore and sprained every ligament in my left ankle in a 3 year period, it was horrible. I still have to deal with this issue, I don't really even play basketball anymore just shoot around. This video was pretty good to learn from. Keep up the hard work!
This is a really helpful video. I sprained my left ankle pretty badly because the soccer field was uneven and I had felt a small pain in that ankle the day before which I had just walked off. I’m gonna do these exercises for both ankles to reduce the probability of ankle sprains.
@@ryanwilson7241 yes. I have been doing these exercises consistently for 3 months. The ankle feels a lot better and I have been back to soccer. I move the ankle in all four directions with band resistance. I don’t have the balance board but I sometimes stand on one foot.
@@ryanwilson7241 It took about three months for the ankle to feel 100% normal although I was able to walk after 5 weeks. I think I probably had a grade three to be honest.

In 2 and a half years I've had 3 left ankle sprains and one right ankle sprain. I also messed up my fibula. The first one was where I messed up my ankle and fibula at the same time. It wasnt too bad for the fibula but my ankle hurt for awhile.
Hey Brian I'm a 6 ft 3 in 22-year-old male that has had extreme tightness in my hamstrings my whole life. I was wondering if you could make a video on ways to improve and fix the flexibility in those areas thanks
I was taking a route across the lane, the big man stepped up fast and it had been a physical game, so I got distracted anticipating contact and the next read, during the split sec of distraction I missed a step and rolled my left ankle, I’m heavy on R.I.C.E. as of now but this video is gonna be so helpful in my recovery
Wonderful information Doc, thanks very much for sharing. I would love to see more of these types of strengthening videos that focus on the underlying foundation
Thanks! I seriously need this. I badly sprained my ankle my freshman year at a hockey game and it still lingers to this day. (I just finished my senior year).
You should make a video on Kemba Walkers Knee issue. He got it drained, had an injection, he was sidelined and had to ice it. He wasn’t cleared to play since the all star game.
The strengthening exercises look good. But if you're getting on a bit as I am, just a heads up about proprioception exercises with closed eyes. The ability to do this declines dramatically with age - so it's quite a humbling experience and a test of patience because, for me at least, progress is slow. Finally, the research I've seen suggests that you need to use a harder challenge than a wobble board to get the optimal benefits. I've had good results working on a narrow balance beam, and am planning to progress to slacklining.
Amazing video. Been a fan of your channel for a while. Been searching for such a video as I had some ankle sprains (always on my right) in the past. I have a question. How many repetitions do you suggest for a 32yo recreational basketball player like me? :) Can you please do a video how to prevent calf muscle injuries?
