    I’m using this build in a spelljammer campaign in AL.
    It’s a lot of fun. I’m the other frontline fighter next to our Psi Warrior fighter.
    It’s the first cleric I’ve used since ADnD. That was just the party healer, and kind of soured clerics for me.
    This build kicks some butt!
    Thank you CMCC Builds!

      but quarterstaff isnt a finesse weapon, so whats up with dumping strength? later on you wont need a melee weapon *at all*, but still, feels like a misstep. in general, a dip for shillelagh can be handy but I dont see its use in this build.

    • @cmccbuilds8229

      I’m not sure what you’re saying here. This isn’t a strength build so shillelagh is necessary for the build. Finesse isn’t needed. You can dip Druid, 2 levels ranger, or magic initiate.
      This is a tank, so you won’t graduate out of using shillelagh like you might a rapier with a bladesinger.

    A cleric with SHAPECHANGE, especially if your simulacrum casts it as well. Taking metamagic adept with extended spell for you and a simulacrum. 2 characters with 2 hours of shapechange. Turn into a dragon, switch forms to get more legendary resistances to protect con saves. Turn into a dracohydra to heal or even give yourself more heads and then heal. Turn into planetars to essentially smite on every turn. Just endless possibilities and you don't have to worry about a fragile simulacrum dying during that big fight.

  • @ericpeterson8732

    Good build. Many people say that Arcana Clerics are one of the subclasses that can do it all. And it sure looks like it. Instead of druid, I would start divine soul sorcerer and then pick up magic initiate (druid). Lightning Lash is a decent substitute for Thorn Whip, but you still need some way to get Shillelagh so custom lineage/human variant and magic initiate at level 1 it is. Between a sorcerer dip (for defense and utility) and the bonus cantrips from Arcana, you should be well stocked. I have a problem with taking non-core races as I don't know their cultures and how that would affect my character. So I don't. So this is my version of basically the same build. I avoid druid levels in multiclassing because of the armor restrictions (which I totally believe in: druids WON'T wear metal armor.) So if I take druid levels, I need some other way to get better AC. I think we still get to the same place at the same time.

      Unfortunately, Lightning Lure doesn't work like Thorn whip. The Range of 15 feet means that they are already in the spirit guardians area when you hit them and pull them, meaning that the don't get pulled into it from the outside, and it doesn't trigger.
      Thorn whip has a range of 30 ft, so you can hit them with it when they are 20-25 ft away and trigger SGs.
      You get two cantrips with magic initiate though, so you can get Shillelagh and Thorn Whip.

      @@AuraXars Unfortunately the Mark of sentiel is one of the old races that doesn't say that you can recast with your spell slots. Githzerai was reprinted which is why it has that added in the MotM version. Most Dms would probably allow it though.

    Cleric subclasses usually get a lot out of their Channel Divinity and whatever their level 1 feature is. Those subclasses deemed weak, are usually judged on these.
    I think the Arcana Cleric is often overlooked or undervalued for this exact reason. The base Cleric features are so strong though, that I don't think this makes it weak.
    Those upper level spells though... yeah, wow. If you ever get to play a high level Cleric this is the one.

    • @fightingfalcon777
      @fightingfalcon777 11 месяцев назад +2

      Agreed. Most Cleric subclasses are pretty front loaded, but I would say the Arcana is much more back loaded, the best stuff coming in at those later levels

    • @ChristnThms
      @ChristnThms 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@fightingfalcon777 too true. If it were common to achieve level 17+, Arcana might be the most popular Cleric.
      The fact is, though, that actually makes my point.
      Arcana's "amazing" high level feature is simply to cherry-pick a few of the wizard's best spells.
      High level Clerics don't compare terribly well to other full caster, because the cleric spell list doesn't have nearly as many of those reality bending spells. So the most powerful high level feature any Cleric gets simply gives that Cleric the best wizard spells. That's it. No unique feature, just access to wizard spells.
      When you look at a class, and see the full slot progression chart, it's the most powerful feature of the class. Nothing else you get will compare to that one feature.

    • @cmccbuilds8229
      @cmccbuilds8229  11 месяцев назад

      @ChristnThms why is amazing in quotes. Is it not an amazing ability?

    • @ChristnThms
      @ChristnThms 11 месяцев назад

      @@cmccbuilds8229 I put amazing in quotes because this "feature" isn't doing anything except give the cleric limited access to spells that every wizard has access to.
      It's a sideways admission that some spells are so powerful that they're better than any class/subclass features at comparable levels, and that these spells aren't evenly distributed.
      Even if limited to PHB only, that means you pick up Mass Suggestion, Forcecage/Simulacrum, Clone/Demiplane/Feeblemind, True Polymorph/Wish. There is no feature in any class or subclass that gives such a sudden increase in power, and it's just access to another class's spells.

    • @ChristnThms
      @ChristnThms 3 месяца назад

      The quotes denote the irony that the most powerful 17th level Cleric feature in the game simply grants limited access to another class' spell list.
      For comparison, Magical Secrets is a baseline Bard feature that gives more spells, more spell lists, and starts at a lower level... on a base class that already gets access to extremely desirable high level spells.

    I'm starting a new campaign soon and I planned on making an arcana cleric. Hadn't thought about trying to make a tank, though. But I have a feeling the spellbreaker feature might be a trap -- I can't remember a single time my other party members were affected by a spell. • @cmccbuilds8229

      Depends on how often your DM uses spells. At high levels, I think DMs use a ton of spellcasters, but of course it depends.
      Either way I wouldn’t call it a trap because their is no investment to get that ability. You’re going to take healing spells, and you’re going to go deep into cleric. It’s in your bag of tricks, even if you never use it. *your dm should cast spells though so you can use it ;)

  • @insertphrasehere15
    @insertphrasehere15 6 месяцев назад

    If you plan on actually playing at 20th level, I hate the Druid dip.
    The reason is that the 20th level feature to auto succeed on Divine Intervention on the cleric is VERY good with arcana cleric due to some rules interactions that you may not be aware of.
    In the description of Divine Intervention it says "The DM chooses the nature of the intervention; the effect of any cleric spell or cleric domain spell would be appropriate."
    Most clerics have pretty lacklustre high level spell effects, limiting the possible interventions a bit. But arcana clerics have WISH, and the arcana cleric 17th level ability specifically says that it is added to your *domain spells*.
    Essentially, an arcana cleric's Divine Intervention is potentially much more powerful than any other cleric, and with a cooperative DM, you can essentially get free a wish spell once a week (notably the deity casts the wish spell, so getting an 'off script' wish with no chance of loss of casting is pretty insane).

      There is a real cost to it as well, as you are delaying your spell progression in Cleric (spell slot progression is the same, which hurts less given that your main spell is an upcast Spirit Guardians, but especially levels 5, 8, and 17 really hurt with the druid dip.)

      @@cmccbuilds8229 I really like this build though. I independently came up with something very, very similar a couple years ago and played it up to level 7 or so.
      She was Astrid Runesdottier, a viking shield-maiden and skaald. She would raise her quarterstaff in combat and call on Freya for power, and it would magically transform into a magic sword glowing with runes (Shillelagh flavour). She'd throw the runes forward off the sword the wrap enemies and pull them in (thorn whip). Spirits of the Valkyries would ride with her into combat and harry her enemies (Spirit Guardians).
      I played VHuman Magic Initiate, and my build didn't have the shield spell (and this was prior to silvery barbs). But she was still a fantastic SAD-build tank/gish character.
