- I've been a fan of Jimmy Diresta for years. So when I said, "If you ever need a resin handle for anything," at Maker Faire 2019 and he said, "Yeah. OK. We should do a collab."

I love the tone of Peter's voice when he explains how micarta is used for knife handles, like he's blown away that he's doing something the 'right' way for once.
*Pro Tip:* If you put that tray of micarta lasagna in the oven on broil for about 5 minutes, you'll get delicious, golden brown crispy edges.

@@MrTarfu me neither, it always annoys me (irrationally) that every surface of his shop, home and car has his name on it. He's a great crafter, but he's very pretentious.
@@squat224 In the early days of RUclips, his clips would get ripped off and shared without credit. It was a "Really? I'm gonna MAKE you give me credit!" idea to stick his name **everywhere**.
@@squat224 Some shady people were stealing his videos and reposting them as their own. That's why every shot has his name in it now. No chance of stealing his videos without the viewer knowing the source.

Fun fact: that honeycomb shape is how computer privacy screens work. From head in you can see through it, but from the side you can’t.

They’re called scales because they can resemble (rather long) fish or lizard scales on some knives, particularly once they’ve been rounded down on the edges to fit the palm.
I'm pretty sure it actually has more to do with "scale" in the sense of a covering or coating (e.g. "mill scale", "lime scale", etc.).

A more universal definition, from merriam webster, is "a thin coating, layer, or incrustation" this includes both the scales of animals, the scales of a knife, and the scale of an oxide. It's not said on the page, but it seems to be assumed that it is all of a hard material.

Okay... skimmed through a few episodes... Not impressed. Does nice work I guess, but there's no hook, nothing bringing me back for more, nothing unique that I can see. His sizzle reel is making a 3x size utility blade? If that's the best he's got, I see no point in subscribing. Also.. The sheer ego on the guy is awe inspiring (not a in a good way) everything has his damned named stenciled on it. Over the top branding, much? I just can't deal with people that self absorbed.

The firehose looked super cool! Though I too would be questioning whether the resin would stick or not. I wonder what if you ran the firehose through a blender to really break up the fibers and make a very fibrous micarta with coarse fibers all over, but densely packed, would look like.

When you are cutting fire hose you should consider medical shears.
Industrial paper cutter works great too. Gives nice straight edges as well.
Wiss Shop Shears rock, I use them to cut carpet and many other thicker fabric materials.
Open to suggestions. I have 12 minutes of footage with me struggling though that hose!

@@peterbrownwastaken Gingher knife edge fabric sheers, titanium rotary cutter, or Cutco kitchen sheers would have each made that job a million times easier than a sharp razor.
Me as a different type of crafter. Why is he cutting cloth with a knife, wouldn't it be easier with scissors.
On the hose it’s just so thick, the bandanna, habit I guess.

The local wild cat sanctuary uses the old fire hoses to make big cat beds for tigers, lions etc.

At the San Francisco Zoo, they use them in the lemur exhibits for climbing ropes.

I saw that vid, it was amazing, he laminated it and used it for an axe.
@@peterbrownwastaken Yes he did he did a test batch and made pen blanks, one of which he turned on his twitch live stream. I bought some of the pen blanks and he surprised me with the pen he turned as well. He did the testing for a couple handle scales for a survival axe he wanted to rehandle.
Can you make something out of playing cards in resin? 🃏
Sure. What would be a good project for that?
A couple ideas that could be interesting:
Cut the suit out of a card and add resin for a stained-glass effect.
Make the deck into a blank and make a box. At first I thought it'd be cool if you could fit dice in it, but I'm not sure the dimensions will allow for that😕
Or maybe a mini chess board? I've seen some pretty tiny ones 🤷🏻♀️
Take out all the suits except for Clubs. Cast them in resin, either shredded or arranged in some cool way. Turn the casting into an actual club and then use it to whack anyone that gets too close to you without a mask on.

Wow, the bandana one already came out looking great on that knife, and I'm personally really excited to see the honeycomb one.
They are called scales because there is another type of handle that uses a handle blank instead which would be for a hidden tang knife like a puukko, but for full tang you would use 2 thinner scales rather than 1 solid blank. Hoped this helped a little 😁

We use that aluminum honeycomb at work on our water jets. Theres a large surface of it that we can lay material on while the water heads cut it.
The googly eye is just precious.

Scales are a specific subset of handle blank. Scales go on the sides of a full tang knife. A through tang knife handle, for example, would just be made from a blank.

one application for Expanded Metal Honeycomb Core is in airplane parts. most of the core on composite parts is honeycombed paper core.
I've been loving using JR dyes. I'm actually no longer using alcohol inks unless doing Petri dish because JR dyes work so well

in one of the episodes of forged in fire the contestants were tasked with making a knife blade from pieces of an old fire wagon in the first round. in round two they had to use something else fire related to make the handle and a couple of them cut squares from an old fire hose, dipped them in resin and stacked them onto the tangs of their knives. i thought that was a really neat idea
I have seen that honeycomb aluminum recently and some knife scales. I cannot pinpoint exactly what brand but it was one of the better ones. The scales looked amazing too 👍👍
You, my friend, need a rotary cutter. Its primarily used for cutting fabric for sewing but it's a round blade made just rolling over things you want to cut. You can get them anywhere and they are very very sharp

Could the micarta process be made easier with stabilizing resin? I’ve been thinking about this for a while. In theory you could out it the vacuum chamber, get it soaked into the material, then mold and bake it to set it
Peter, I love your homemade resin dye videos and I would love it if you did a similar video about wood finishes - not how to make your own, but to compare all the different kinds of finishes. I've been searching online to figure out what the best finish is for a project but the info is vast. There's stains and varnishes and oils and polyurethane and wax and each kind has different varieties... I'd love a breakdown of your favorites and how they behave differently on wood.
