They’re called scales because they can resemble (rather long) fish or lizard scales on some knives, particularly once they’ve been rounded down on the edges to fit the palm.

It's not said on the page, but it seems to be assumed that it is all of a hard material.

The firehose looked super cool! Though I too would be questioning whether the resin would stick or not. I wonder what if you ran the firehose through a blender to really break up the fibers and make a very fibrous micarta with coarse fibers all over, but densely packed, would look like.

@@peterbrownwastaken Yes he did he did a test batch and made pen blanks, one of which he turned on his twitch live stream. I bought some of the pen blanks and he surprised me with the pen he turned as well. He did the testing for a couple handle scales for a survival axe he wanted to rehandle.
A couple ideas that could be interesting: Cut the suit out of a card and add resin for a stained-glass effect. Make the deck into a blank and make a box. At first I thought it'd be cool if you could fit dice in it, but I'm not sure the dimensions will allow for that😕 Or maybe a mini chess board? I've seen some pretty tiny ones 🤷🏻♀️
Take out all the suits except for Clubs. Cast them in resin, either shredded or arranged in some cool way. Turn the casting into an actual club and then use it to whack anyone that gets too close to you without a mask on.

They are called scales because there is another type of handle that uses a handle blank instead which would be for a hidden tang knife like a puukko, but for full tang you would use 2 thinner scales rather than 1 solid blank. Hoped this helped a little 😁

in one of the episodes of forged in fire the contestants were tasked with making a knife blade from pieces of an old fire wagon in the first round. in round two they had to use something else fire related to make the handle and a couple of them cut squares from an old fire hose, dipped them in resin and stacked them onto the tangs of their knives. i thought that was a really neat idea
Great work, as always. It's a real shame Diresta butchered the scales as if he has never watched one of your videos to learn literally any degree of finishing resin products. His blade was okay, but he really murdered those scales. They looked like a blobby mess. On a personal note, I don't feel he gave you half the shout out you gave him. But I am glad you got to collaborate with someone that inspired you to make your channel. Your videos are always pretty great. Thanks for keeping it up, dude!

Peter, I love your homemade resin dye videos and I would love it if you did a similar video about wood finishes - not how to make your own, but to compare all the different kinds of finishes. I've been searching online to figure out what the best finish is for a project but the info is vast. There's stains and varnishes and oils and polyurethane and wax and each kind has different varieties... I'd love a breakdown of your favorites and how they behave differently on wood.
I liked the trick of pouring one layer of resin and spray-painting a stencil on the surface. I would have expected the paint to dissolve into the resin, but the visual effect of the floating letters is interesting.

I have seen that honeycomb aluminum recently and some knife scales. I cannot pinpoint exactly what brand but it was one of the better ones. The scales looked amazing too 👍👍
Scales are a specific subset of handle blank. Scales go on the sides of a full tang knife. A through tang knife handle, for example, would just be made from a blank.

When you are cutting fire hose you should consider medical shears.
Industrial paper cutter works great too. Gives nice straight edges as well.
Wiss Shop Shears rock, I use them to cut carpet and many other thicker fabric materials.
Open to suggestions. I have 12 minutes of footage with me struggling though that hose!
