Professor, I admire your perspective on world affairs, but I don’t understand why you think it’s hypocritical of the US to shoot down Iranian missiles heading towards Israel when the U.S. and Israel have signed many security pacts that requires the U.S. to help defend them. As you know, this is not the case with Ukraine. The US has been a key ally of Israel’s since the late 1940s, while the US only established diplomatic relations with Ukraine in 1991, and it only started providing lethal aid during Trump’s presidency. These kinds of comments only put the US in a negative light, and it makes me wonder if you’re saying it because a Democrat is in charge. The US military is already stretched thin globally. It can’t there there for everyone everywhere all the time. Maybe our European allies can step up instead.

The Russians are overly arrogant and have no shame.
True that they illegally annexed 5 Ukrainian oblasts, without actually occupying them in their entirety.
Imperialistic aspirations notwithstanding, the Kremlin are getting somewhat desperate and their military is not is not up to finishing their task within the set timeframe (the entire Donbas - Luhansk & Donetsk - within October 15, the rest somewhat vague).
Also, we should remember that these are the minimum objectives.
I doubt Putin will ever settle for less until he is forced to do so.
We have a saying that seems apt - "Never sell the pelt before shooting the bear".
It is up to Ukraine's partners to provide the Ukrainians whatever they need, without any ridiculous restrictions.
I yearn to see the day when Russia has to abandon its attempt at a land-grab, retreat in utter defeat and repeal these laws.

Because west wants israelis to stay where they are. They are seen as existential threat. Many americans lost sleep over the report that israelis were fleeing Israel for the US. Even having guns was recommended for safety. People of Poland too got worried since way too many israelis have their passport. Note that US was technically saving what was supplied to Israel. Iran is always after military targets.

Israel is something like 100km wide, with some few western forces deployed between Iran and Israel, and an easy access to Israel's coast. Ukraine is more like a thousand kilometers wide, surrounded by Russia and Belarus north, east, and south, the Black Sea cannot be accessed, and on the western border there's Moldova (not NATO).
I do agree that some 100km could (and *should* ) be covered by NATO anti-air systems on Ukraine's western border, but the geography of Israel and Ukraine are quite different.

why do people keep saying NATO? nobody in the core members of NATO is interested in getting stuck in a third world war against russia. we keep hearing that poland and barking chihuahuas like estonia and latvia and finland and others are "oh yeah, just itching for a fight, just itching for a reason to bring the fight to the russians and wipe the floor with them!"
really? then why don't they do it? why do they need american kids to come do the fighting for them and shoot down a few drones that go into their airspace? they have aircraft and air defenses. the new NATO boss guy made it very clear and reiterated the official stance again. it's the same thing as with long-range weapons or sending out troops to do training for the ukrainians. these countries are free to do whatever they want and shoot down as many russian drones as they want and send out as many contractors and drill sergeants to ukraine and send as many long-range missiles as they want to the ukrainians, but they are doing it under their own banner as individual nations. can't come crying and asking for american and french and british and canadian and spanish and italian troops if they earn themselves a strong response from russia because they wanted to pick a fight.
these countries have all been doing the russia russia russia and inflammatory rhetoric attempting to get america dragged into a world war against russia for three years now. it's sickening. if they want war, they need to fight it themselves. put some skin in the game, use their own troops and their own money.

Regarding banning childlessness, I would recommend some reading on the foster children situation in Romania under the communist dictatorship. Abortions were completely outlawed so all unwanted children got carried to term and then put up in orphanages. Its one of the lesser known humanitarian catastrophes on the 20th century. Hundreds of thousands of children brought up through the communist orphanage system, most severely scarred by the gruesome care of that system to such an extent that it became a significant area of study. Russia has learned nothing from its history and the history of its communist neighbours. They are on track to repeating that most heinous experiment.

RUSSIAN SCHOOL CHILDREN USED FOR PRODUCING WAR MATERIAL
    The Barents Observer reported today:
Russian school kids and teachers in Gymnasium No 24 in Arkhangelsk take part in producing stabilizing fins for grenades dropped by drones. The school kids produce the fins with 3D printer owned by their school.
The product can also be bought at Russia’s major online retailer Wildberries.
One of the teachers says: "…a teacher is like a border guard, only that our borders are different. Also we serve so that Russia’s border can be endless,”

Good idea, or at least the school kids should be given the choice: an hour of learning 3D modeling and process of producing drones, grenade parts, etc. or an hour of LGBTQ+ theory education.

Is this the case with a huge number of American republicans too? Absolutely no knowledge of history and the sacrifices made by their forbears for their freedoms today? The interpretation of the childless tax should be as follows:
    1. with the breakup of the Soviet Union, the educational system changed. The State no longer spent the same money on education in the minority areas of Russia.
    2. you can tempt men from minority areas, but what to you do with the women who can cause problems like during the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan? You promise a place in better schools.
    3. obviously, minority women know that the promise of a better education for children of contract soldiers is a lie. So what does the State do? It forces women to get pregnant so that they will be less likely to cause problems for the State. Putin does not give a damn about an army 20 years in the future.

Israël is of strategic importance to the US, because they have always been close with each other and it is a US-friendly country in The Middle East. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I have looking at Israel as a sort of forward base of operation for the US in a practical sense. Israel does what Israel think is best for them. But their geographic position position makes Israel a strategic valuable partner.
I do not think the US sees the strategic value of Ukraine as it is overshadowed by a possible nuclear threat. Why would they take the risk? I cannot come up with another explanation why The West is deescalating since the start of other war and continues to do so.
Russia will never invade a NATO country, because they know they will lose that war with weeks. The US F-22’s, even though they are 10 years older, would have the Russian SU-35’s for breakfast. That’s just one piece of equipment. Russia is no match for NATO and that might have been exactly why they invaded Ukraine before they would have the chance to join. And Putin would have taken Moldova next if he would have had control over Ukraine or the areas bordering Transnistria. But they failed to take Kyiv and they never managed to reach Odessa and push through.
Could it be politicians are that rotten that they support Ukraine just enough to show: “see, we are helping them!”, expecting that Russia would have rolled all over them, being the 2nd most powerful nation of the world? The West and especially the EU relies on Russia and China for a lot of recourses. Many countries say they are backing up Ukraine to victory, but their actions show otherwise. Is it that Western politicians just want this war to end, so they can continue dealing with Russia again?
I apologize for my dark, pessimistic, paranoid thoughts, but we simply are not providing Ukraine with the help it kick the invaders out of their country. We should and could do much more! But I do not have full oversight, so I hope all the brainiacs of different specializations have a plan to help Ukraine to victory.
    Cheers, Rick

I have commented on the Russian demographics earlier, but I'll reiterate:
True to form, Russia is using the stick (penalties) instead of the carrot (incentives) to solve a fundamental crisis, contrary to what almost every other country with similar problems have implemented.
Previously, under Mao and the Gang of Four, China used penalties in conjunction with their "one child policy" to limit their population, the consequences of which are acutely felt today (other factors stemming from the shift from an essentially agrarian to a post-industrial society aggravating the problem).
Today, they are trying to reverse the trend with cash incentives and tax breaks (policies that are implemented in Japan, South Korea and many European countries as well).

      @@GARDENER42
Overpopulation is a topic that has been discussed for the last 50 years, back when the population was half of what it is today.
However, many post-industrialized countries are experiencing declining birth rates and an aging population, where the individual nation becomes unsustainable.
      There are two solutions
      - increased birth rate in the younger generation
      - immigration from other countries
The first does nothing to alleviate overpopulation, rather it exacerbates the problem worldwide.
The other, if not controlled, will lead to domestic chaos.
The rise of ultra-nationalism, waves of migrations, climate change - they all point towards conflict and global crisis.

The US position on defending Israel from Iranian missiles but not Ukraine from Russian missiles is morally and strategically indefensible. This is especially so since the Israeli Government is conniving in illegal settlers in the West Bank using force to drive out Palestinians from their homes. Ukraine is simply defending itself from a genocidal aggressor.

Make no mistake. Kherson and Zaporizhzhia are Ukrainian to their bootstraps. At the time of the dissolution of the Soviet Union each of them had a free vote as to whether be part of an independent Ukraine or be part of the new Russian Federation. They voted 90.1% and 90.6% respectively to be Ukrainian. This was a genuine free and fair referendum unlike the BS one in 2022, when supposedly 87% and 93% respectively voted to rejoin Mother Russia. Believe that and you believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden.
