Pay attention to the artillery losses. During WW2, the Soviet Union moved its heavy industry east of the Ural mountains. After the war, there was no incentive to go through the expense of moving the equipment back to the original location.
The Russian strategy has witnessed its offensive delivering three artillery rounds for every one round fired by the UA. The use of artillery is not like the American usage in Vietnam. The US could operate its artillery from a hilltop because there was no counter artillery batteries operated by the Viet Cong. The Russian artillery has to be mobile in a country wherein the road system is not good and many roads in rural areas are dirt roads.
This was ok until September in the Russian strategy . . . push, push, push until the ground froze or got muddy. Then regroup in the early winter.
Two significant observations have been clear to the casual reader: 1. Russia was producing 152 rounds at an insufficient rate and were sourcing significant amounts from North Korea and Belarus. 2. that the more accurate and modern artillery pieces were being used first in combat, but the range was insufficient and artillery pieces, new and old were being lost to UA counter batteries with long range rounds and to UA drones.
Two significant events have taken place in September: 1. the UA destruction of a 3-4 month supply of artillery rounds/missiles 2. the invasion of the Kursk region which has caused the redeployment of not just artillery pieces in the field, but the entire logistics chain supporting supporting the moved artillery pieces, and the handling is done by raw human power and not forklifts and pallets.
Mild historical observation. Western front, WW1. The Germans had better leadership and a rail line overwhelmingly inferior to the French rail system which could move an entire army from one point on the front to another in just three days. Today, the Russian logistics are very poor with hungry troops in horrible living conditions at the front and no rotation. Conversely, the UA tries to rotate troops and has a better logistics system.

    Hi Prof.
I think it was yesterday Greg talked about Vuhledar. I hope I interpreted his words correctly, but from what he said and showed in his video, Russia didn’t take Vuhledar. Russia bombed Vuhledar into nothingness. At most locations there isn’t one stone standing, especially in the center. Yes, Ukrainian troops withdraw their forces, but there is no city to take. It is the sad reality of this war.
A reality made possible by The West, because we do not allow Ukraine to protect itself properly.
And while The West keeps worrying about Russia’s red lines, we do not take over the initiative and draw our lines of our own. The F-16 that was harassed by the SU-35 in or close to US airspace shows exactly how Russia thinks about us.
Russia will never follow the carrot. It only listens to the stick and it is about darn time we start acting like it!
    Cheers, Rick

Wow, the GUR hit the enemy in the morale. 🙂 Hitting Class VI supplies (booze) is a heavy blow.
In total, since the full scale invasion began, Vuhledar cost russia over 800 tanks and armored vehicles to capture. It's of no particular importance, other than belonging to Ukraine. They lost a LOT to get the place. In fairness, so did Ukraine in order to keep it for as long as they did.
The drone shoot-down is embarrassing for russia. For context, this type of incident is why the gear we send them tends to be a few block upgrades old: we don't want the enemy to learn how our gear works and to develop countermeasures to it if it's shot down or captured. While it's potentially an intelligence bonanza for the GUR since it represents the state of the art for russia, it won't propel the Ukrainian state of the art forward since we're helping them to bootstrap their own native hardware production (and Ukraine was building russia's advanced capabilities before the war). It looks like the SU 25 struck it accurately though. All I saw was wing pieces; the guidance, optics, and communications were probably in the nose and main body.
The interplays between the russo-Ukrainian war and Israel's conflict with Iran and its proxies are interesting. The latter source quenched russia's supplies of missiles from Iran. I wouldn't expect that to last all that long, just for the hot phase of whatever Israel and Iran are doing. Apparently, the DPRK is pausing their munitions shipments to russia as well. To my knowledge, no plausible reason has been floated (perhaps stocks are low?). However, just as the months-long delay in supply had real effects on the AFU's combat power, the source quench by russia's main partners will ripple through the russian battle rhythm as well.

Why shouldnt Ukraine join NATO whilst fighting the occupiers? Jens Stoltenburg is Right. Russia cannot be allowed to win and Ukraine has proved itself a worthy member of NATO.

Dr G: I see the combat losses. Are they strictly deaths or are deaths and severely wounded. In a way if they’re wounded they need long term care, unlike the dead.

Russian history: the Czar was overthrown and his family murdered when the Czar tried to raise taxes to pay for a failed war, by taxing alcohol. Destroying alcohol production means alcohol gets more expensive. Also Russian upper management are often alcoholics, so it hits them personally. Additionally alcoholics without alcohol are very difficult to manage. We kept the liquor stores open during COVID19 in Ontario because our socialized medicine administration knew the emergency rooms would be full of drunks in withdrawal, thereby hindering the medical personnel. Drunks with alcohol are dangerous. Drunks without alcohol are even more dangerous. They start hallucinating and seeing their family or who ever they encounter as the devil!

Others may give better comments about Vuhledar but as I understand it the Russians want it as the Ukranians could hit railways from there.
Railways that the russians use to supply the southern front.

Consider superior Russian firepower. Then Ukraine reports of Russian losses make sense. Also witness the rapidly moving lines of contact - not in Ukraine's favour.

2:13 if they have become true alcoholics, they are much worse off for around five days to a week if not longer if they have become true alcoholics and dependent on the alcohol. So this could make many of them, incapable of fighting for around a week.

Vuhledar was of military operational importance, more important so than Bakhmut or Chasiv Yar, it was a natural/urban fortress that held the corner of Ukraine /Russia battle lines, it not only enabled Mariupol to be in range but also the railway lines that supply the Russian military on the southern front. If it was not important why did Russia sacrifice so many lives in its repeated attempts to take it.

Ukraine lost twice as many troops defending Bakhmut as the Russians did, attacking and finally taking Vuihledar. Stupid comparisons to Chechnya and Afghanistan. Different times, different circumstances. A really hard NAFO style cope. How many elite UKRAINIAN marines were lost attacking Krinky? Oh, you don't talk about that anymore, it probably didn't happen. Just another Russian talking point. That's a top gun Russian pilot there. The American pilot had to change and wash his flight suit when he landed.ARE YOU KIDDING? How do you know 80-90% of AFU soldiers are tortured? PURE PROPAGANDA.
