I'm still going through this game myself. Working to G rank. While i think underwater looks cool and was a good idea.....i feel like i roll my eyes everytime a monster jumps into the water
On the subject of hitboxes, 16:08 There is no way in hell that wouldn't hit you in any other old world MH game. Dodging in 3U feels so rewarding, Zinogre stomps in particular are just delicious. As far as Lagi is concerned, I think most people prefer the 3U iteration because of how cool it was to fight a sea serpent on its own turf, then force it out of the water where you have the advantage. That back-and-forth struggle is something the MH team should strive for with every monster. Also, as a Lance main I adore the double hipcheck and underwater combat as a whole. It's my biggest hope for MH6.
MHtri literally was the definition of addiction to mh for me. I played every american release of mh. I look to tri the most fondly. Except world. World is amazing i just wish it had swimming
"No idea how anyone gets through the start" By enjoying it as part of the whole experience. I started with MH1 and loved all of that. Not all the time but doing the gathering and getting built up is part of the MH experience. The whole experience.
@@jokig I agree. I can find it difficult though to see things from the other perspective because my whole experience of the franchise started early with the first and the way I thought about it is completely different. I dunno maybe I'm the weird one.
The gathering is the best part of the game. Fighting the monsters has always been more like the icing, but without the cake of gathering there is no point to eating the icing of boss fights. My biggest complaint from the new games is that you never need to go and grind anymore, even the boss monsters drop gems and plates every other hunt so they can be fought maybe 3 times and you have their set which sucks a lot of the fun out of the game. My fondest memories of MH were grinding a single Yian KutKu or Rathalos for 9 hours straight trying to get a plate or gem to finish the set, sadly newer gamers do not have an attention span longer than one minute.
I definitely have the privilege of hindsight, but the sense of anticipation at that point in the game is amazing. When I first picked up 4U (my second game) I was kind of feeling meh on if Id enjoy it as much as 3U but the first time I mined Machelite ore that I needed for a CB upgrade I was hooked for 300 hours lol.
the amount of times hearing how people hated their first mh experience is insane. i must have been really lucky not having any "expectations" going into this and instantly falling in love.
I used (Gun)Lance for almost everything except Brachydios. It worked really good for underwater combat because you could block almost everything. Even Abyssal Lagia was doable with Lance solo. I've put well over 300 hours in this MH game. It's good but MH4U was such an improvement on every aspect. Great vid btw ^^
My god I had so many false starts of monster hunter with freedom unite on psp and just couldn't until tri came out on the wii and it had my favorite weapon the switch axe really though the gathering kept me out for the longest and I usually don't mind mindless stuff but blah glad they are slowly making that a backround task.
I disagree so much on Lagiacrus and Gigginox. Maybe its due to being a blade master but old gen Khezu is atrocious. No rolling backwards means you just get hit by his discharge spam. You have to position in a very specific way. On top of that he's just slow and boring whereas Gigginox is constantly flipping around and is just a more active fight overall.
@@Rathadude But at least Barroth was manageable, the giggi had terrible attack patterns and attack locations (because the arms get in the way of melee hunters) Not to mention the constant screeches and anger mode where the giggi constantly attacks. The weapon sharpness being at green yet still bouncing was also horrible…
You're the 1st and only Monster Hunter RUclipsr I've heard say they they prefer Generations Lagiacrus. There aren't many of us, but your not alone, lol
If i recall correctly, and i'm sure i'm not the first one here to clarify that, the 3DS version of 3U is a port from the home console Wii U. The DS' hardware doesn't handle full 3D movement underwater as well as Wii's, which is the reason why many people came to deslike this combat format, since the DS version was very popular
The 3DS version of 3 G came out two days off from a year before the Wii U version. The Wii U version also has the same underwater controls as the 3DS version, you're just more likely to have a right stick than on 3DS, especially in 2013. However, if you were to compare 3 G/Ultimate's underwater controls to Tri's underwater controls, then yes they did handle them slightly better on the Wii if you changed a setting in the options menu allowing diving and surfacing through the ZL and ZR buttons, otherwise they are the exact same. This option was not available in 3 G/Ultimate for either the 3DS models or extensions that give ZL/ZR buttons or the Wii U, for whatever reason.
Sorry phemeto you ain't a boomer. I am 37 and been playing mh since part 1 on ps2 when analog was used for attacks not face buttons. When u can headlock rathalos and rathian for pl8 runs lol. When u can carry 99 lv 3 clusts to make and 3 lv 3 clusts already made.
Underwater combat does have invincibility frames to perfect dodge, just as regular combat. Windows are just tighter. Basically need to hit dodge on moment of impact. I use this best to fight underwater Lagiacrus. You can his wind-up side slams which then provides some openings for counter attacks. You just have to dodge forward into them.
My first was MHFU via emulator and my friend also sold it to me as “Dark Souls but not”. Honestly it didn’t really capture what the game was but it was a start lmfaoo
I hve a hot take also: MH Freedom 2 and MHFU is the only old MH that hs a good introduction. Training school gives you all the info you need in pieces, and its not front loaded or absent.
I said the same thing to a friend. "Its like if Dark Souls bosses was the whole game". He loves the souls games and I know he would love Monster Hunter
JUST KNOW.....since your missing out on the sensor bar mic! the experience will lack that major part of online in Ultimate. It was the literally worst voice chat ever and nintendo wanted to bury the memory. Not only would the voice you hear echo, but your own voice would echo so it was double everything said 😂😂😂😂 I remember when it was active I was in college so my roommates came back from eating and thought they heard demonic sounds coming from my room and they checked and I was like "Oh hey no, this is my friend Sam from monster hunter"
ik you emulated so it doesnt really matter, but 3U was also on the Wii U which is the biggest thing it has over 4U imo and one of the main reasons I personally prefer 3U
yeah, literally this. Citra just runs so poorly on a computer that isn’t spec’d well, so 3U still has an edge, for now. until Citra is optimized for worse hardware, or 4U is ported to a new system (both pretty unlikely), 3U still slaps for that mainline, og MH experience.

Also it's rare that I see people share my opinion that the Flooded Forest in Rise is very disappointing compared the the 3U version. You're going to hate Abyssal Lagiacrus if you do get to it. Lucent Narga is pretty good but it's nothing special now that Sunbreak has it too and gave it more moves.
Good video but I don't understand your point about the dumb ai which seems to be your main criticism. It's the same old school ai you find in mh4u and genu, it's not like the monsters are smarter there.
I feel so validated on gigginox, lol. I *really* don't understand how anyone ever liked fighting that thing over Khezu, like "oh no, he screams a lot, how terrible." Meanwhile gigginox is just poison and giggi hell. Coming from an all-rounder perspective, fighting gigginox with melee is *ass,* especially at the point when you encounter it in village quests. Regardless of what weapon you take, you likely don't have green sharpness, and the only real weak spot is the pivoting head. The wings are just in the way enough to make this a major problem for most wide swinging weapons, leaving you with very precise, carefully timed pokes...and then gigginox just flips around and you're poisoned again. Great. Absolutely awful monster in 3U. Hate it so much.
@@bboy458 yeah, World and 3U are both outliers there, World having too many ranks and 3U going really fast. HR 3 is where High Rank starts, and G Rank starts at HR 6
