Great job Jay! Jaime’s a super boss and friend. You had the right instinct to keep that beautiful maple natural, good on Nanna for knowing as well. Steph’s reaction to your surprise - priceless!
The wood prep was great. This is how I should have gone after. You leave the panel a little wider a little longer. GLUE The panel, straightline on jointer or with a plunge saw. Then cut it to length. You may need a piece of metal 3/16 x 1 1/4 so your panel doesn't cup, that face on one side may not be enough to keep it straight. You cut a notch on the face piece to hide the metal. Glue the face on, use 2 nails to keep it from moving and clamp the pieces.
Your craftmanship (and confidence) is improving with every project! Jamie is an awesome employer and friend for letting you use his woodworking tools like that.
Jay the doors came out great. It’s always nice to have a great boss to help you out with supplies and the use of his tools. James is great!! Can’t wait for the next project.
I don't know how Jaime uses that jointer without getting a pit in the stomach. I get phantom pains just watching him use it. Good job on the door by the way! You could add a little material to the sides to make it wider and would frame it up.
It was devastating at the time but Jaime (that's how his name is spelled in their about us section of their website) has been my biggest inspiration for overcoming fears on the job site. He acknowledged his accident and showed his rehab process and even outside of work has figured out how to swap hands for playing guitar after his accident with the jointer. He's inspired me to be more proactive in using the tools but being safe about learning the dangers. I'm honestly curious what earbuds he currently uses for hearing protection and how loud music is since his accident was because he had hearing protection in and didn't realize the jointer was still running which was what caused the mistake in the first place
I rolled a 4 wheeler years ago, broke my arm and dislocated my elbow, as soon as I got home from getting the cast on I went to work fixing it so it would be ready to ride again. He knows the machine wasn't the cause of the accident. It was operator error, and as far as I remember he's got safeties in place now to prevent a similar occurrence in the future
I am so glad that I am not the only one who had a hard time with this. I used to cringe anytime he was near it. I don’t do that anymore. I think it’s because he worked to hard on his recovery that his robot hand is just his hand now and I try not to think about the accident anymore.
Jay great job on the door. Made the wife happy, and that is always helpful. you’ve come a long way over the years, since falling through the ceiling! Also, bout time you did a video on your workout routine.
Great job as always Jay. My wife and sitting here and seeing you say it’s a surprise. I always love doing secret projects to see that smile on love on my wife’s face. Happy wife, happy life.
Another awesome project Jay well done buddy. Have you ever thought of doing a members channel as the perkins bros do. I would happy to support you same I do with the perkins bros. Keep up the great work it was great to see Steph's face on the outcome 👌😊 all the best from Thailand 🇹🇭 🇬🇧
Jaime is a legend. He is always trying to do things the best way possible and always thinking how to do it better. And he will take the time to explain lol
Jay, love the doors! You did a great job and I knew Stephanie would love them. Thank you for keeping them natural😊. Only one comment and hubby said it and I agreed, you need to put a second knob on the other door so it looks symmetrical. She could use either knob to pull, but it looks unbalanced with only one knob. Again GREAT JOB!!!
Awesome job Jay. I like how you critique your own work its so honest. You certainly take pride in the work that you do. Having a friend like Jaime with his knowledge to help with different things must feel great. Your videos are great, keep them coming.
Just wanted to say, my family and I love your videos. Very entertaining. We had pointed something out on Perkins Brothers last video, about the Mega house that they haven’t noticed. At 22.14 minutes in Jaime looks like “Little Debbie”. All he needs is some curls. LOL. Check it out. Too funny. Been watching you all for a long time. 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😃😃😃😃😃
Wow, looks and functions great. I've got a doorway just like this, no room for sliding, a new project begins. Thanks so much for showing the building pains. Gives the rest of us a reason to try even if we are'nt perfect in the process.
Nice job, Jay! The only things different I would have done would be to make the door bigger, as you suggested, and the pull placement. Sitting where it is now, when the door is open, it's a catch hazard. Had the pull been placed on the fixed panel, it would be behind the door when it's open and completely out of the path of movement. I love the clear finish, that was an excellent choice on Nana's part. The look on Steph's face says it all, dude. I'm certain that will pay off big for the relationship! I have done quite a few barn doors, but had no idea the hardware kits were available in a bifold version. Thanks for the video, because this opens a whole lot of options for my clients now!
Love love love them doors jay maybe keep the door knob but put one 4inc down and 2 inc in on the other side may give that look a little bit better bro but wanna see more like this brva keep up the great work
As a cabinet maker in Australia i do a fair bit of Bi-Fold doors. We normally place 2 handle knobs on the internal edges same distance you did. Center from height and 50mm in from edge. But with the 2nd handle even though its not required visually i think it plays much nicer.. But either way really like the look and it is awesome bud!
At first I thought you were absolutely right that knob should be close to the hinge. Until the very end of video when you closed the door. It's better near the hinge for opening, it's better in the middle of the panel for closing door. I think I would put the knob 1/3 of width the panel from the hinge.
Early in the video Jay said we don't need to know what's behind the door. Later in the video, when removing the old door and installing the new, shows the wall of shoes. No shade, just found it funny. Looks great.
@@Building_Jays_Waywe’ve got a new to us house and the previous owner left all their rough sawn pine. You do a good job of highlighting the work it takes (even though you don’t know until you do it!). So glad I saw you featured on the Perkin’s brother channel. I wanna support the small guy. Perkins has enough 😂🎉
Nice job! My OCD would agree with Jamie about the placement of the door handle- I am actually driving my husband crazy right now designing a kitchen remodel- everything has to be even and centered. For me I personally would add another knob a few inches to the left just for looks. BTW- love your videos!
I had the same thought about the handle. Even if it's not used, I think the symmetry of one on the left-hand side would be excellent. What a great project, though. An excellent upgrade on the original doors.
Jason …..fantastic project mate…..these doors would cost a fortune to buy….. hand made….. the real thing…. you your family have great weekend….⚒️🔨🎉🔥🎉❤️
Great work. I like the design very much. My thoughts are on the way you fitted it showing the bracing, I would prefer to see the panels to the front but thats my opinion and your wife loves it and it does show the structure which is so well built. Looking forward to the next installment. Stay safe J.
I love these videos. It's so fun seeing your humor in the Perkins Builder Brother videos but I love watching your smaller projects. So many woodworking videos these days are the ideal woodshop furniture builders but sometimes I don't need the perfect piece of furniture milled from lumber I harvested from my backyard, I need to see how to make it look great from a carpenter that knows how to do it super efficiently with what they know, bonus points for Jaime providing sone tools you dont have though. This project looks awesome and I'd love to have that in my home, and since I'm redoing our closet doors and flooring I learned some things from this.
27:33 I don't get all the 16th etc, just us the 'mm' (millimetre) it's right there and way better to calculate 😂 That door is absolutely beautiful, fantastic job 👏 and thank you Jamie for the timber and use of your amazing workshop!
True craftsman ship! Awesome video and an amazing door! PBB are truly genuine ppl! They take pride in their work, and always wiling to help/teach along the way. Great job Jay!
I'm no builder or anything but I wonder if putting the knob in the same position on the other door might have been a better choice, that way when it opens the knob is facing outwards and won't catch on your clothes or whatever. Look, either way, what an amazing job Jay! Totally the right choice on the clear coat, that's some beautiful timber right there, be a shame to try and cover it with a stain. Looks amazing. Kudos from Melbourne Australia.
Someone else had said that same thing. Never thought about the knobs sticking into the opening? I guess it would make sense to put on the other door. Just don’t know if you would get the same pull effect on the other door. Thanks for the pro tips and thanks for watching.
That was totally not stage! I had no idea it wasn’t shooting anything. And then I grabbed the piece of wood and it comes right off! Thanks for watching.
Great job, Jay! Lucky you have Jaime and his equipment to get you going! I have a friend that's planning to make barn doors for his garage, hopefully he can get a few tips from your video! Love watching all of your videos! thanks!
Nice job...new to your channel! Just a thought [probably already mentioned], but if the spacing on the sides does bother you or the Mrs...a little homemade edge banding, can fill in those gaps! I'm pretty sure you knew that...a project for another day...perhaps! 😂 ❤ 🎉

Lifting that board when you shot those 18 ga. ghost nails looked like a magic trick. Milwaukee 4 Life! 😆😆
lol.
