I have a laptop which I bought 12 years ago so it's very low powered by today's standards. But I can easily run Android studio, a browser and an emulator on it, all at the same time, and guess what, the performance is very similar to what you get on a mid-range laptop available in the market today.
What my laptop lacks in the hardware department I make up for it by installing ingenious Linux distros that are built for superior performance.
These distros breathe new life into older hardware as these operating systems have a reduced overhead, allowing the computer to use more resources in terms of memory and CPU cycles for user tasks, thereby providing visible boost in performance.
Today I've picked for you the top 5 best Linux distros that deliver a power packed computing experience along with solid stability great usability and some with downright stunning looks.

How about CachyOS? Their packages come patched with all the latest optimizations (be it from clear linux, liquorix, xanmod, tkg...) as well as x86-64-v3 to ensure the highest performance. You can pair it with a minimal desktop like XFCE to make it lightweight.

Initially it didn't support hd display for my connected monitor which I fixed through terminal, the display is fine but when I watch youtube it seems the display is a lil bit lagging but the sound is smooth... what to do. Other than that how to clear the cache? For example in windows searching %temp% gives the temporary files list deleting which makes the device smoother. (I am a first time linux user)

Yeah, it always bugs me when people with perfectly serviceable Core 2 Duos with 4 GB of RAM think that their PC is "vintage" when that can probably run the latest KDE Plasma quite comfortably. I have AntiX running on an Atom-based EeePC netbook with luxurious (for the time) 2 GB of RAM that is used to play lullabies to put my baby to sleep and, surprisingly, it can also be used to watch IPTV (as long as the channels list are provided through a .m3u playlist to VLC). Hi, i am going to use for the first time Linux. I have some questions. Bodhi Linux is lightweight, it looks very good, but other Distros have also lightweight options.
I am not a programmer or IT guy. But i know basic things about computers. I want something Debian based, because i heard that Debian is most stable.
    1) I have an imac from 2009 with 8gb Ram.
Which lightweight, user friendly, complete and good looking Linux Distro do you recommend for my Imac?
    2) I have also a new laptop from HP. Just bought. It has a i5 processor with 16gb Ram.
Which user friendly, complete and good looking Linux Distro do you recommend?
    3) If i can use a lightweight Distro on an old computer. Can i use it also on a new computer?
    4) What are the benefits to use a lightweight Distro on a new computer, especially a laptop?
    5) I was thinking also about KDE plasma, Ultra Marine Linux, Alpine Linux, Open Suse
Actually, I prefer to use the same Distro on each computer. The same Distro in lightweight and Normal or both in lightweight. I am not a gamer. Only sometimes. I want to do also some simple video editing with the Distros. Vacation videos.
I want the best possible option. I will wait for your reply. Thank you very much.

Are there any lightweight distros that *don’t* look like Windows? Something like a “light weight“ elementary OS would be nice. I am currently running Ubuntu Kinetic Kudu on 2012 iMac. It’s ok most of the time, but sometimes freezes a couple of seconds. But it looks so gorgeous, I’d rather suffer the performance hit for now 😅 Your Firefox GPU tricks did help making browsing better, thanks!

I thought huh interesting. Then saw Manjaro. That's not even close to lightweight... Just use some random lightweight distro that is customizable enough to take these (kinda suckless) parts. Sinit for the init system. sbase+ubase for coreutils + util-linux. Then for the gui you might expect me to say dwm. But that's based on xorg which has about 420k lines of code so no. I'd say velox is your best bet for the almost exact dwm experience. But with about 20x better speed and lower size. If you take these steps. Depending on what parts you use in you use in your system (Because some drivers are lighter than others). You would get about 50-70 MB RAM usage. And that RAM usage entirely depends on how light you compile the Linux kernel. My personal system uses about 10 MB because I compiled the kernel with the lightest settings that I would use.

What makes Zorin good is that you can't easily mess it up and it's great for beginners and non-tech people. But for advanced users, it is by far the worst distro as it has been dumbed and locked down to the point that I could not recommend it for anything beyond web surfing and email. The list of things you can't do or customize with Zorin is just a mile long.

    • @cejannuzi

I'm hardly a Linux newbie, but Zorin is a good distro because it let's me run almost all the apps that I really need to use. So I use it for a lot more than web and email.

@@cejannuzi Fair enough. I guess I'm more of a keyboard short cut person (and short cut person in general). I avoid my mouse/trackball whever possible. For example, in Mint I can just press the / key to start typing a folder path in the file manager, or alt+up to go up a level, etc. I like to dock windows with Super+arrow keys. I want to be able to customize these things and all the available options in the file manager like opening terminal window at the current folder, or a quick toggle to show hidden files, and on and on.

The list/video started quite badly. But in the end, from the #2 it got better. I mean, #1 and #2 are genuine lightweight distros. And the information in the conclusion was pretty good.
Still, I can't get over things like not mentioning Antix, Arch or Gentoo (and there are more), but instead focusing on offtopic things like how good it looks. The author either doesn't understand a bit what "Maximum Speed | Ultimate Performance" mean or they're deep deep into clickbait. Disliked.

Manjaro XFCE, Mint MATE, Zorin? Really? Those great distros should not be mentioned here. They could be good on ~6 year old any form computer with 4 GB RAM, but ~12 y. o.? With 1 - 2 GB of RAM? No way. After few days of using, installing software and updates, they will become slow and sluggish. Only Bodhi, MX, Debian +LXDE or OpenBox, LXLE, Manjaro+OpenBox.

@@Winnetou17 What nonsense is this! Zorin OS is very fast and stable, has no other problem than the ones I had with other distros. I have used Linux for over 25 years and have very good experience with various distributions. Ubuntu is ok, but not always as stable here with me. Most Linux distributions as I have experienced them are in constant development and that is a good thing. But it seems as if Zorin os is betting more on stability than rapid development! Maybe they depend on this because they sell computers with Zorin os installed, I don't know! but it is of course an advantage for those of us who seek more stability than the very latest new glamour! Without a doubt, there are Linux distributions for every taste, even for those looking for a stable day-to-day distro. Zorin os is built on ubuntu, it is as fast as ubuntu here at my place. Then it is also the case that different Linux distributions now and then behave differently on different hardware, and people have had different experiences with installing Linux. Everyone would like to highlight their dream distro that they like. I see a lot of Linux movie and cooment out here, and it seems quite often that all new Linux versions are always just better and better than everything else! After so many years under Linux, however, I am more critical and sober. But this with the fastest! sorry, but this now depends more on your hardware. Of course, if you have too few resources, then ubuntu is not the very best, I would say, then xubuntu is significantly better. Then it is also a matter of taste when it comes to the appearance of the desktop. Personally, I don't think either kde or standard gnome is the prettiest today. I rather prefer the look of zorin or deepin. But that's my taste. And the taste is like the butt, it is divided.

You just need to know your softwares. You first experiment with several distros and decide to settle down with one. Then you experiment on it to squeeze out every drop of performance.... ;)
