Diesel Jeep Drives 12 Feet Underwater! - Dirt Every Day Ep. 54

- Опубликовано: 5 сен 2024
- Fred’s 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ affectionately known as Tubesock was in need of a new engine, and Fred wanted to recreate a crazy stunt from the 50’s by driving his jeep underwater. To achieve this Fred swaps in a new Cummins ISF2.8 diesel engine, bolts on big Maxxis tires (www.maxxis.com), and sets about waterproofing the whole Jeep to survive under 12 feet of water. Will the little Jeep be a submarine or just an anchor? Watch and find out!

thanks mate I don't even wanna know the first 20 minutes were about
Dude what would be the point of watching the video
thanks!!
your great! ty
This jeep walked so cleetus’s humvee could run😂
Diesel rules... This was awesome. It's funny too though cause my Dad always wanted to swap his 4.0L for a Diesel of some sort but there was never an option to do it let alone a CUmmins option... Sadly he passed away due to Brain Cancer here in April but he would have LOVED this episode and the engine swap alone would have been too cool for him.
Sorry for your loss
Very sorry for your loss, Bear. Your dad doesn't have cancer any more.
+HappyMuffinz Fan thanks.
Oh man I'm so sorry for your loss. Well he's watching this video in the heavens now. My prayers are with you :)

OMG so cool
no there is just a shitty car underwater... you could drive a Honda underwater if it had a snorkel
+wildstyle666brooke really if you even stick a honda civic in the water it will die in like 10mins of it being in the water
Some people, gave thumbs down to this video... I'm starting to think that some humans, are just unable to like/enjoy something. This was epic!
amen
for a 4 cyl gas jeep this would be a swap worth considering but in an i6 jeep the swap loses it's justification
I agree
probably only watched a little
They act like robots thats why
Me: hey man I wanna wash my Jeep...
Him: do you have a 12 foot snorkel?
Fred and his show is one of the best. He's a great presenter. he lives and works like a big kid. Something we all wish we could do.The thing I don't like about a lot of these shows is that when they need something, they reach into their deep pockets or they have parts given to them. Taking an IDEA and getting it done with an unlimited budget isn't much of a challenge. Do it with used or OEM parts. Mix and match. Stir it up and out comes something really cool.
If you're looking for stuff like that, try the show ROADKILL with David freiburger and Mike finnigan
Except for the brand new industrial engine, gearbox, atlas transfer box, 4 massive trepadors, custom adaptors and the labour of several different people. Yeah. Totally budget.
This show doesn't have an "unlimited" budget. No show does. This show gets a piece of the financial pie that's allocated to all of the MT shows. Fred spends the money wisely and uses sponsors to pay for the rest. It's smart. You could get sponsors too if you were doing great things with your vehicle that would garner lots of online interest. And honestly, if you want to see old broken down parts being used, he has a whole series based on what you can do for almost no money. In fact, most of this entire show is about doing things on a very small budget and Fred always gives tips and tricks on how to save money. I think it's top of mind for him.
+Feint I never said that what Fred does isn't great, it is. However, the idea that it is somehow a show about doing things on a budget is total bs, considering on this episode he spends probably what most people earn in a year on brand new parts.
Trench Gunnah' I love the Roadkill and Dirt Every Day people. I love the "Original", "Premise" of Roadkill, the Buick Special!, but here's the problem I have with that show. I have always been "The Planning Kind Of Guy". I am not a spontaneous person. I build things in my mind first and troubleshoot every step. Then, after I have a well thought out plan, all the parts and tools, I proceed with the build and hope that it is as trouble free as possible. Those guys seem to just walk up to the car and start working with no plan and hope for the best. It seems to be a show of mistakes and how not to do things. Running out of gas all the time? Cars building is hard enough if you Do have a plan.
i'll let you guys know something. you have your shit together. these are great videos with great presenters.
I agree but your name makes your comment biased lol ;)
fuzzy wuzzy that wasn't very fuzzy wuzzy. gotta tell you something, your comments have zero sting when "your" not smart enough to use words correctly. kinda like an ugly person telling me that i'm ugly. just doesn't work.

No worries of overheating! But I’ve done that before! In The Army! The Motorpool I was assigned to had found some deep water forging kits, one for a Duece Ana Half, the other for a M151A2 “Jeep” , the weird little one built by AM a General with four wheel independent suspension and 4 cyl gas engine that all were equipped with waterproof ignition and charging systems. The Jeep was able to forge through just over 5’ of standing water. The Duece Ana Half, over 10’!! In the Jeep the bell housing was actually sealed, to a point. The Duece Ana Half also had the bell housing sealed, but also had an air line to pressurize it to help keep water out, same with the trans/transfer cases.

"Looks kinda cold"..... Turn the heat on. Duuuhhhh
When I was in the Military we had vehicles that could run submerged and all we used
was a intake. The exhaust was on a snorkel type system. If he motor shut off a float
would stop water from entering back into the engine. Worked pretty good along with
some old fashion GI engineering.
Forgot to turn on the windshield wipers...
I know right
he said there were no wipers.
Or tailights, or headlights, or battery?
Steven Lamphear why would you put those thing in there just to get wet and ruined
to keep the water off the windscreen.
20:56 That’s got to be the best pirate I’ve ever seen
So it may seem
Shouldve put paddle tires on it
Too funny!!
Probably would have made it through the first stage if he did
Should have put Super Swampers on, but they're sponsored by Maxxis. Too bad.
Bigger tires have more air in them, lower weight less traction. He should have filled the tires 50% with water. Farmers used to do that with their tractors.
Paddle tires won't do any good if they're fully submerged in water, they would only make the car do backflips underwater.

No way man, it is only due to the shirt he wore that day.
Oh man, think of the rust this will have in a year from all that trapped water... XD
It's probably going to be torn down and the parts reclaimed.
no salt in that water though
Take a mild steel bar, polish till shiny, put it in a new (blue)food grade drum, fill drum with distilled water that was tested to ensure ph-7, seal drum, come back in a year...
rod still shiny.
Do the same, only add just enough HCl to drop ph to about 6.5...
rod is fucked, people blame water.
TheRedneckAtheist
True... but even tap water or rain in 99% of the inhabited world has a pH below (or above) 7, so it can be generalized that pretty much all water has contaminants. :P
Even perfectly clean and perfectly neutral water will cause rust in the presence of oxygen. The sealed drum in your example prevents oxygen from entering (other than any that was initially trapped inside), but this Jeep is not sealed like that.
the real question
why isnt there a stock cummins diesel engine in every jeep?
Alexes Miranda #exactly
Alexes Miranda now that's a thought a good idea.
Alexes Miranda Mercedes crd was in Jeep.
Because they can sell them to high school poser boys (parents) for $50K?
Alexes Miranda gas is easier and cheaper and a Jeep doesn’t need that power if they did they would have v8s
This reminds me of a video of a jeep similar to this one in a swamp buggy race on a water-filled oval track. The swamp buggy drivers were all high and dry, elevated on tall farm tractor wheels while the jeep driver and his girlfriend were in a standard jeep and at times only shoulders above the water with the jeep completely submerged other than the air intake and exhaust. The swamp buggies were much, much faster, but broke down one at a time until eventually only the old jeep was left chugging along to finish the race.
Andrew D I want to see that
I started dying when he was like, "you are not moving", and the camera just shows his flag pole stationary and you just hear the motor running lol.

That was so funny he thought he was driving in circles.
Most ponds are lined with about a foot of bentonite (clay) so they will not loose water out the bottom through the porous dirt. Clay gets really slippery when it is water soaked.
You just know some hill-billy is going to try driving one of these diesel jeeps though a feed-lot wastewater retention pond.
cleetus mcfarland did
And failed miserably... This actually makes me kinda want a Jeep. And I hate Jeeps. But a diesel 4 cylinder would be pretty sweet. And the reason I hate them, is kinda why I want one. They're just easy, since they're made to do this kinda stuff. It's fun making a full size do it anyway, but it gets complicated and expensive.
Jess Stuart hilly billy 😂. You sound racist bruh
Saw those attempts. Utter faliures.

Mechanical engines don't need any electronics to run.

Having a diesel car in Usa must be a big thing whilst in Europe 85% of cars are turbo diesel
its not
I mean they're around for sure. A diesel golf/beetle or something like that you'll see every now and then depending on where you live. I don't see a diesel car every day though.
Ehhh. It's interesting if you know what you're looking or listening to. But most people don't even know the difference. So nobody really cares.
I see diesel pickup trucks everyday. Small diesel cars like hatchbacks and SUVs are rare where I live. I'll see the occasional VW diesel.
+Jeremy Nottingham We have the diesel Chevy Cruze in the US. Might be what your looking for; they are a little on the rare side though.
One day my buddy was driving home in his Jeep, and the latched hood just flipped up. Must be a common problem with Jeeps.
Well if it was latched it wouldn't have come up. User error not manufacturer error
@@TypicalPeen never fully know, it could of had wear to the point bad road conditions and higher speeds could have vibrated it enough (I don't own a jeep so I don't know the system that well) but yeah, most likely due to user error or not latching it fully

I saw this live.... in hummingbird simi valley, when I used to work there
Way to take a nice Jeep and turn it into a hazard to navigation.
good one
Just tie a buoy to it with a bell. Then the passing vessels will hear the bell and see the buoy. No problem. The buoy will also double as sort of a indicator to protect the Jeep. It is sort of like the red flag on the end of the CB antenna while dune running or just a red flag.
+Indrid Cold Lol. Like a SCUBA diver's flag
How is it a hazard to navigation when it's in a reservoir. There's no passing boats.
There were no navigation lights there should be a red light on the port side and a green light on the starboard side. You never know when another Jeep is going to go scuba driving.
he better check his diffs , bet theyre full of water lol
Are we gonna ignore the Pepto Bismol monster at 22:00....he must still be marinating at the bottom of that pond...
That was awesome!!!!!!!!!!! I really want a tj but where I live there too expensive
...and the point of all that effort installing a diesel was....?
petrol's aren't exactly great underwater...
I think its because of the spark plugs. Diesel engines only uses compression to initiate the stroke,
Only due to the need of spark plugs.
Advertisement for Cummins, that is all.
Spark plugs work fine under water. Obviously there is no water in the cylinders and all the wiring is sealed. You might have to seal the ignition computer but some are potted/sealed from the factory.
☣droid☣ That makes more sense

Question. Would it be possible to add a compressed air tank with a demand regulator to feed the engine, so that you don't need a snorkel? A fully water-proof jeep? Maybe run the exhaust on a flex hose with a weight so that the end always sticks down and water won't go up into it? Not sure if that'd be possible but it would be awesome.
SuperKONR theoretically, it is possible. the only problem is that you would need a really big tank cuz the engine is gonna use the air pretty quickly. so, you would be left with a specific time for which you could stay underwater. you could however put an air compressor to fill the tank on the go but the compressor would have to have deliver compressed air to the tank at a rate which is more than the air being consumed by the engine.
Some submarines do that, look up 'Air independent propulsion'. In their case they bring a tank of pure compressed oxygen or liquid oxygen instead of air and dilute the oxygen with recycled exhaust gas before sending it into the engine.
SuperKONR .0mp9
?
Engine displacement x 1/2 rpm = the volume of air at atmospheric pressure you would need in the tank. For a four stroke engine. If you don’t have a turbo. If you do you also need to factor in boost. So 2.8 liters at 1000 rpm you would need a tank with a volume of 1400 liters per minute, as long as you take the turbo off. So yes in theory you could run it off a scuba tank. But that Jeep would need a regular size scuba tank about every 6 seconds
nitrous can
WOW mate... you are absolutely awesome to even try... Totally wicked...
That bronco in the back is nice!
Just get bigger tires and it can float across the pond.
I have to give it to you !! That is badass .
Do it for dale!
Fun Stunt but anyone trying this themselves should know this thing is is going to die an ugly death of electrical gremlins once the corrosion creep starts into the stranded wiring and electrical bits. Greasing connectors won't protect behind the plugs. It might be days, weeks or months but CORROSION WILL HAPPEN. This is the same thing that happens when a boat sinks and someone attempts to bring it back to life. Also, all those grease and oil seals on mechanical bits are meant to keep fluids in, not water with pressure of 12' out. Good luck to anyone who doesn't get parts for free from sponsors.
I love mudders lol! I made a small fortune off of them back in the day overhauling ruined transmissions, transfer cases and diffs full of water, and the electrical problems, OMG!
Y Honda 300 is invincible
