I have watched other Elantra Thermostat videos. The location seems to be different on other models. I have a 2012 Touring Edition- that has proved to have some quirks with part variations. Even my brakes are different than standard Elantra. So confusing. I need to find mine before I can replace it. Cheers!
Do you know what the connector is just above the left screw of the housing? Mine broken when removing it and can't find what it is for..light grey on metal bracket if that helps more
So, potentially dumb question, but what should I do if one of the studs holding the cover on breaks? I can't seem to find a single parts store selling them.
Josh Dill you’ll most likely need to find one at a pick and pull and remove the stud from another car... I wouldn’t usually suggest this but I found a set on a car that was in good shape and got lucky good luck!
I actually was able to find the part I needed from a Hyundai parts warehouse. They didn't make it easy, though. Even the dealership I went to didn't know how to get one. Thanks for the advice, though.
This particular config is in 2000-2006 models. I cant find any evidence of a 2.4l being released in an Elantra, they all had the 1.8 G4GB or 2.0 G4GC engine. Id like to add, Make sure to check your PCV valve as they age.
When I'm working on older cars I will often not drain the coolant so I dont run the risk of damaging the seal in the radiator drain. It will probably not give you issues though.
Turns out the aftermarket gasket comes in 2 parts one blue oval and one black circle [( black circle gasket goes in the housing)before the blue one and thermostate are on]
Yes, the engine will never reach proper operating temp resulting in poor fuel economy, increased cylinder wall wear, oil dilution with fuel and a check engine light for code P0128.
I have learned from experience that, in some cases, using the radiator drain plug aka petcock can cause it to leak afterwards which is not desirable. Customers do not appreciate approving one cooling system repair only to be told later that another cooling system component has failed as a result of the first repair. Feel free to perform your repairs in any way you please.
"make sure to do it hot and without draining the radiator for maximum pressure and fluid release"
Got no time to let things cool off
🤦
😁😂
😂😂😂
where's all this green stuff coming from?
Complete repair one-handed while recording the video... impressive!
It answered my questions. Thank you.
Hope it helped you get back on the road. Thanks for watching.
How about that haha 😂👌🏾
Make sure you drain the antifreeze first save you from having a mess
A helpful video by a real mechanic, first curse word at 00:20. Thanks, now I don’t feel like such a heathen.
Im most impressed how he is able to do this with one hand

The thermostat wants to fall out of position. How do I keep it in place long enough to replace the housing?
Nice educational video. I found it very informative and useful for me to repair my car. Thanks!

@@Oceansky521 where you ever able to figure this out I had the same problem
Any suggestions on why when I got it tightened up and started refilling it. It leaked out of the bottom? And I didn't have a rubber ring.
thank god they didnt put it in near the waterpump like most cars and having to tear the timing apart good spot was worried about that
Does anyone know that torque for the thermostats nuts?
Did all this without taking out the battery?
How much are you torquing the nuts on the thermostat cover bolts?
Which way will the circassian on the thermostat come?

i broke 2 housings, be aware
Can you list the tools you used
Is there any way to do this without getting coolant everywhere and especially around electrical connections?
Yea you can drain the coolant from the radiator petcock if the car has one equipped.
When I'm working on older cars I will often not drain the coolant so I dont run the risk of damaging the seal in the radiator drain. It will probably not give you issues though.
The thermostat does not mount to "the block" it mount in the thermostat housing which mounts to the block.
Thanks for the video. It helped me out !

What size are the thermostat nuts?
12mm deep socket
Amigo saludos en sensor de temperatura de cuántas pines es
I believe it’s a 3 pin.
were did you buy your thermostat or does it make a difference ?
Amazon but make sure to replace the nuts and washers.
Do this on a hot or cold engine?
Cold if you can
What is the temperature of the stock thermostat?
180 Degrees Fahrenheit
@@LehewTech Thank you. What year is that Elantra and do you know if the 2017 Sonatas use the same temperature thermostat?
Michelle John it's an 04
What size nuts were on the thermostat housing?
12mm I think
Any reason not to just leave the thermostat out of the system?
Yes, the engine will never reach proper operating temp resulting in poor fuel economy, increased cylinder wall wear, oil dilution with fuel and a check engine light for code P0128.
@@LehewTech Yeah... Bad idea
I wouldn't trust this guy with my car. He didn't even let out coolant from the system before opening the housing. What a mess!
Why didn't you drain system first?

How much should something like this cost?
