    Sigma 100-400 L Mount Review: Tested With Panasonic S1R, Leica SL2 and Sigma FP
    There have been quite a few reviews for this lens, particularly the E mount version, so let's take a look at the L mount version. Not everybody needs such a long telephoto lens, but if you do (and if you have an L mount camera), the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS lens might be for you.

    I think the modern meta is now to just up the ISO so that the aperture isn't as critical as before and you can still shoot shorter exposures. Lightroom's new AI noise removal is so good that I've quite worrying about ISO for lenses that aren't that bright like this one.

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah AI noise removal is crazy. We did that with 4K videos. It took days but the result was amazing.

    I am on the Sony A7RIII, I was originally contemplating the Sony 100-400GM. After looking at extensive reviews, and finding out that I could buy this 100-400 (for landscape/birds/general wildlife), the tripod collar, and the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM for the same amount of money. It's an absolute no brainer.

    Thank you for testing this. I have been searching since it was announced a review on an L mount camera with no luck. About the Sigma Fp.. Raising the shutter would have solved the problem. ALWAYS choose shutter over iso with a lens like this. A slightly noisy image that is sharp is better than a clean image with motion blur. Besides, high iso is impressive on the fp so it will likely be no problem. ✌️

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  4 года назад

      Yes it will but because the FP doesn’t have a viewfinder unless you attach one you will be holding it away from your body thus it will be less stable than to hold it like a traditional camera.

    • @mikeoclimberMTB
      @mikeoclimberMTB 4 года назад

      First thing to do on the FP is up the min shutter speed. I think it comes stock around 1/60 or so. With no IBIS I would say the min should be like 1/100 or 120. The FP has a dual base native ISO of 100 and 3200, so 3200 isn't noisy compared to other cameras if you need to use it.

  • @mrjonkane
    @mrjonkane 4 года назад +1

    Looks good, nice review and great to see the L-mount version tested on a few different cameras. I have the fp and have been considering it so it's useful to see your results without IBIS. I regularly use the Lumix 24-105mm where the OIS is very effective at 105mm but out to 400mm is a different challenge. Would certainly benefit from being on a tripod which of course is not ideal for all situations and could probably handle higher iso in some circumstances but definitely makes me consider a bit more carefully 👍

      @@TECH360TV Any comments on the CAF? The caf isn't too great for the 24-70 DG DN and 35 1.2 DG DN lens so far on my s1r/s1. My S pro lenses night and day in comparison for caf. The hunting is much reduced, and focus speed is significant faster. However, I read online that sigma has been improving on this. Would you say that the 100-400 sigma has this improvement? Thanks

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  4 года назад

      CAF on any fast lens with the contrast based AF system will propose a challenge. However with this lens starting out at f5 there isn’t an issue.
      As for the comparison to Panasonic glass, I find them relatively similar in focus speed

  • @below90hz

    Thanks for the review. Unless Sigma comes out with a sport or Art version that hits a minimum 400mm, your video sealed the deal: this will be the telephoto lens I purchase for my S1R.
    EDIT: Just want to add that you link to the Sony E mount version in your description. I'd love to support you so I think it would make more sense to link to the L mount version for this particular video.

  • @jliang70

    I got the Sony version of the lens. The performance of this lens is very good in good lighting condition as reviewed. In Australia the E mount version of this lens is $1043 (AUD) which is about 1/3 of the Sony 100-400mm and less than 1/2 the price of 200-600mm. The best bang for buck super zoom lens for Sony E mount. I can't wait to see if they come up with 150-600 mm version of the lens.

    • @TECH360TV

    Thanks for a great review.
    About 10 days ago I picked up a Sigma 100-400mm L for my Leica SL2. Based on use so far I really like this lens, it's obviously not in the league of the Leica Vario Elmar 90-280mm L which I also have, however the Sigma's much lighter & has longer reach for wildlife. Have also used the Sigma 1.4x tele-converter with the 100-400mm, there's no noticeable loss in IQ.
    Re your comments about camera shake, I've found the same with some images, I suspect it may be shutter slap? I've found that using the Electronic shutter makes a positive difference & yields sharper results.
    This lens certainly punches above its weight, I'm keeping it.

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  3 года назад

      Congrats on the lens. Yes this isn’t in the same League as the Leica 90-280 but also a lot less expensive haha

    Hi, thanks for this review. I m using this lens also with my s1r. But, as a landscape photographer I m always using this couple on a - very steady- tripod. By looking at my pictures (at a 27 great monitor) and zooming in, some pictures look very blury. I m not sure but maybe it's the Stabilisator. So, in this case I have one in the lens and one in the body. To switch off I m not sure if it's enough to switch off at the lens? The body stabilisation is still on? I can't switch off this one in the menu. Any idea? Thks klaus

    I was not convinced about the image quality of this lens.. I am using an SL2, I shot some cats which weren’t particularly moving too fast and shot some stationary objects too.. neither did I like the image stabilization (1 or 2) nor did I like the sharpness at the longest focal length! Maybe the lens I got was a dud.. When you’re spending money on SL2 you really don’t want to be compromising on IQ AT ALL!! I returned it despite this being the only option out there with this focal range.. I’ll rather wait for the pana 70-300 and get that I guess.. the pana 70-200 f2.8 is INCREDIBLY SHARP!! I tried the 2x TC and that disappointed me as well so returned the TC too.. sticking to the 200mm for now and shooting APS-C mode for longer reach with the pana 70-200..

    Hi
    Thanks for this video. Nice to see you again.
    Owner of both Nikon D3S with 150-600 G2 and lumix S1R I was calculating this evening that to reach the equivalent focal range and final image on the S1R as on the D3S with 600mm I would need a 300mm and crop until 12Mpx the sensor of the S1R...
    And then the leica 90-280mm came to my mind... but at a stellar price!!! Searching for something else I found this sigma.
    But I’m getting used to very high quality result and I’m afraid this stigma will not be satisfying me... since I met the 90mm SL prime lens (check my video ;) )
    Did you already test the SL 90-280 ?
    Any thoughts on the comparison?
    Thanks again for the videos you make and the effort on the L mount

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  4 года назад

      The 90-280 is a fantastic lens but you will deal with weight and size issues when you take it out. However if you can get a good price on it like you said, you will be well rewarded. The Sigma is also very good but different category of lens.
