Here are all the tips for people who don't want to watch this video: 1. Put on your shoes 2. Go outside 3. Have friends 4. Have money 5. Be sad 6. Keep being sad
What works for me is just shooting with my phone. Playful, no overthinking, capturing whatever I like with no intention to share. And I actually got a few of my most favorite photos that way.
Great video Justine, so many spot on points. I struggle to get motivated as I have no one to shoot with. I want to make amazing pictures and grow as a person through the lens of a camera but I have to seriously kick myself up the butt to create. Keep up the good work and happy new year 🙂
Love this! Great tips and good insight, felt very honest and real. I did the same with my cameras and kits and shrunk it down to maybe 4 lenses total and it helped so much.
I know it's not the subject under discussion here but as someone who hasn't lived in Ontario in 25 years I really appreciate how in almost every single video you give these little glimpses of both megalopolis Toronto (and occasionally Montreal) balanced with tons of rural Ontario woodlands. I can't access either of those the way I'd like (currently based between Nova Scotia and Zambia) and even if it might feel mundane, that part of your videos/photos always brings out a nostalgic part of me. Happy new year, hope yr keeping warm!
This is very good advice. My thing is "limitation creates creativity", I find limiting myself to say going out with one lens (whatever's on my body), especially a prime lens, really helps me get more creative with my shots and makes me think differently about how I shoot ever time I go out... moral of the story, sell gear and use that money to travel and gain more experiences that can't be replaced by gear
Setting constraints with your gear is a good way to break out of a slump. Tell yourself you will only use pre model year xxxx camera or switch to a photography style you don't normally do. Leverage weaknesses into strengths.
For anyone struggling to come up with a photo trip idea… visit a nearby hot air balloon festival. Or you can go travel far for one too. Most take place over a weekend with larger events spanning a week. They happen year round too (it’s easier to fly in the winter but it doesn’t draw the crowds as easily) so there’s got to be one somewhere!
I took a break for 7 years lol... when i came back we had ai autofocus, film sims, 40 mega pixels sensors, dslrs were pretty much done and mirrorless, street photography and film were cool and not just for weird kids... i was very confused but it was very fun to hop on the horse again.
Justine, thanks for the advice. My best "vacations" have been solo trips spending two weeks walking around a city with camera in hand. Nothing else to focus on except walking from morning to night and taking photos of new discoveries and spending time in favourite locations. Unfortunately health issues/surgery complications have stopped me from taking photos or much of anything else for the last several months. I'm hoping for the day when I can get out and about locally and also book my next two week photo trip. I am so glad I found your channel, I love your personality and sense of humour. Gord
Great video, Justine! What helps me is going to a museum or art gallery with my camera. Like you said, my goal isn’t to take photos that day, but seeing the art always inspires me to start shooting again :)
Museums and art galleries can be architectually beautiful and can lend something visually interesting to shoot! And depending on the weather, you could be blessed with good light in those spaces. :)
Thank you. I will make myself a fresh hot coffee, eat a little breakfast and than i will enjoy a photo walk in the woods with fresh snows and maybe even a little bit of a sunrise! Greetings from Germany
YES to option exhaustion! On a selling mission rn. Not going to lie, it's going to be a tough ask getting rid of the 85mm F1.4 which I've used about twice in 3 years 😳 also, I enjoyed the beeping out of 'ass', whilst happily leaving 'fuck' in. Nice work.
I totally agree with you. I used to shoot with Sony and had many lenses. It was too much and now I sold it and bought myself a fixed lens Fuji camera. I don’t even do photography business, it was just a hobby and I asked myself, why am I having so many lenses ? I was dumb back then but now am little less dumb 😂.
Hi Justine. I say this to my friends who live on the other side of London from me when they end up feeling like this. When you go shopping for food make the journey there into a mini photo walk food related. When you walk the dog do the same thing that is dog related. Turn those things that are needed to live that mean you have to go out into photo related walks. Also, this can be done inside the home. Photos of all your chocolate wrappers as a still life and so on. A few things that might be of use. I am off to put the kettle on for tea, see ya.
My problem with getting out is finding time. I got a camera mainly because I like to explore and I want to show the cool places I find. I don't mind going out by myself (I can understand why a lot of people don't like going out by themselves though) even though I do feel like people are judging me. In your case you could use your dog as an excuse to get out. Go out to places you think might be good to take pics and walk the dog.
Wait. Gear can be sold when it hasn't been in use?! 😲 Thanks for this one, good reminders! May I add another tip? Print your photos. It's different process and ends with something haptic. However you do it, it has a clear outcome and most likely you already have an edit of a pic you like. And no shame in reprinting something that you've already printed. Heck it doesn't even have to be your own work. Print someone elses stuff to see the outcome. Print bigger or smaller, but print.
Dear Future Justine - To beat the winter blues my sister and I recommend 10mg daily of Celexa/Citalopram. Your days will be more creative and you'll probably find you're sleeping better too. Begin in mid September and in six weeks a more cheerful, thankful, appreciative version of you will appear. But why wait until next September? I also have too much gear. I have three lenses for sale.
I may have gotten my partner a camera for Christmas and I maaay have been on 3 more photo outings than I would not have been on otherwise as a direct result. Yeah, accountability rocks 📷
My big issue when everything sucks i am in a small town and most of my photo friends are across the country and i try to just educate myself on these cold snowing days .
I mentioned in the video about planning dedicated photo trips. It doesn't have to be expensive or fancy. It's all in how you prioritize your time and friendships. A dedicated few days to see them and take photos is what you might need
Ahm, excuse me, I actually use 3 lenses on a regular basis, not just 2 😒 The other 20 are just watching though. But going on a trip can‘t be emphasized enough. I‘d rather shoot with my phone on a roadtrip through Italy than sit at home with a fancy camera. This will do so much more for your photography - and your soul.
I am not a good accountability buddy but I can be an enabler 🙈 I also have a plethora of gear I never use 😅 I need to resell my Canon 70-200 f2.8 I know I’ll probs never use that again haha Life is short, go on a trip aaaand buy new gear 🤭 🤗
How'd you know i'm an introvert lmfaoooo I agree, sometimes you just need to find someone to hold you accountable, i personally just randomly hit up one of the large content creators i knew and told him i'd hit 100k by the end of 2025. Insane goal, but i can't let him down, you know? Quality on the a7cii is acutally insane btw. lol
I'm ok. But the weather is terrible here. 2 degrees C (now dipping well below zero) and that's not so bad but there's been a cold rain all day. I ate a whole box of liqorice candy. Regrets! LOL Happy Newyear everyone!
Put the camera in auto. All this RUclips BS about serious or real photographers only shoot in manual needs to stop. Take control if or when needed. Just take the weight off your brain and enjoy the day. Have fun, be reckless see what happens.

6. Keep being sad
7. See 1 when you inevitably slip back into everything sucks because it's ok to be human
But I like the video, too!!!👍👍👍!!!YOU HAVE VERY GOOD IDEAS!!!Nice JUSTINE,by the way(I generaly like photografers!!!)

Thank you for being honest at the same time an inspiration.
This was so wholesome and YES streamline your kit I got rid of so much and also suffer from analysis paralysis.
My mom had SAD and she bought lights that emulated sunlight and it helped her feel better.

“Option exhaustion.” It’s real. Great video, subscribed.

Cool discussion. Love that you (a) use a ruler as your mic stand, and (b) welcomed your dog into the zone for comment :) Nice work!
So true!

That’s how I felt when I went to the movies for the first time in 7 years. A bag of popcorn is $15 now?! 😂

Inspiring video. Keep up the good work. Could easily have stayed indoors all day but this made me venture out to get some shots.

AND THAT IS OKAY--- i like that 👍🏻
6:34 Life is short, spend 2 grand on a lens that you occasionally use! I felt that one 😭😂
😂😭
Thank you. I will make myself a fresh hot coffee, eat a little breakfast and than i will enjoy a photo walk in the woods with fresh snows and maybe even a little bit of a sunrise!
Greetings from Germany
This mic is surprisingly good 👍 😮❤
Get out and walk ! Excellent advice. Not only puts you in a better mood, but great for weight loss if you need it :) 7.2 kgs in 6 weeks yayyyy !
Relatable, helped a lot. 🤓
I mean it, thanks
Great tips very useful!

It was buried deep in the video that I didn't think anyone would even notice it 😂 most people quit watching my videos after 3 minutes!
JUSTINE! you rock!
Phô content 👽
Warmer weather would help))
“Life’s short spend 2 grand” I take this way too seriously 😭
I totally agree with you. I used to shoot with Sony and had many lenses. It was too much and now I sold it and bought myself a fixed lens Fuji camera. I get that. I hope you can find it in you to make time. If it's important to you, prioritize it.
Wait. Gear can be sold when it hasn't been in use?! 😲
Thanks for this one, good reminders!
That's a great tip! There's something nice about holding it in your hands and looking at it on a tangible piece of paper than on a screen.
