I was laid off from a Corporate job at 50. Worked there for 23 years and it was devastating. Applied for over 100 jobs with no luck and age discrimination is real. Been doing side hustles and working low paying jobs to get by. At times my dog is the only reason I get ready for the next day. Who would take care of him? The thought of my dog being alone and without me is too much. I was fortunate to roll over my 401K and pension buyout to a Roth IRA and can withdraw funds at 59. I can live off the dividends comfortably. Now I have to survive for another 6 years. Wishing you the best on the YT channel and I subscribed and will watch your videos. God bless and have a great Christmas.
I was laid off in April at the age of 54. First thing I did in my resume was replacing “20+ years of experience” with “over a decade of experience”. Age discrimination is real.
@@themartinblairproject Also what is important is to get in touch with some of your contacts from previous jobs (if any) and let them know that you are on the market. Chances are always higher to get your foot in the door through somebody who can recommend you. And try applying for higher positions than your previous one as well. Your years of work might become an asset in the higher roles, even if you don’t have a lot of management experience. Also shows that you are up for a challenge. And don’t neglect contract jobs, even short ones. Wish you the best of luck.

I enjoyed the video. The snow and scenery is beautiful !! I live in Texas and I would not survive in those low temperatures.. Lol !! Regarding employment, another thing to consider is, if you are listing your previous employer as a reference, they may be giving a bad reference. I would list other employment references.
Smart employers know that you need a multitude of ages to make things really work, its the older workers that bring wisdom and more experience with people to a team in a work force. There are also those employers that can't afford to be picky about age requirements.
Like to give my 2 cents as why ageism has become the norm, it’s going to be long this one, so get you reading glasses out. Firstly we’re at a pinch point in history , boomer generation overall have had the luxury of retiring earlier. In the U.K. in the last 5yrs contracts with 30yrs of service has allowed people to retire at 55yrs old. It’s now currently 60yrs old, but we’re at an infliction point in out population. Currently their is 246 retired for every 1000 people working, that’s set to increase to 348 per 1000 by 2032, that about a 1% increase. What’s interesting is that this is when more people are retired than in work from the 18-30yrs age group. This is 15million people that will require healthcare and pensions, it’s a drag on the economy. We have recently received an increase in retirement age to 67yrs here in the U.K. to compensate for this demand in pension and healthcare. The problem is employers now see 60yrs old as been a few years off retirement or they see 50yrs as not worth employment. They can’t see that a 50yr old still has 17yrs of work ahead of them. Post pandemic a lot of people in their 50yrs started to re prioritise life needs, more time with family, friends and hobbies. So men and women are now working on a part time basis. 2million people in their 50-60’s post pandemic took early retirement or part time positions. Government we’re not expecting this and are offering massive tax breaks that won’t effect their pension. This has led to a disaster, i now have 3 part time managers, where I used to have one and the communication has completely broken down, they are disinterested, unwilling to engage with young employees problems. This has led to a divide in work culture, us vs them. Why you might be finding it hard to get employment is younger people work culture, it’s not uncommon for younger people to live at home until late 20’s early 30’s, since these youngsters don’t have the same life admin, paying mortgage, rent, electric bill, building up life admin, sofas, TV’s, dishwashers. Companies can now afford to pay less. As a younger worker I can now do 60+ hrs in the office and know mum and dad are taking care of the rest of life admin. So employers expect this “go above and beyond” for the work place. You can’t and don’t want to do that in your 50-60’s, you have life admin to sort out, dinner, maintaining a house, keeping up with hobbies. I must also point out that education in the work force is in a disaster state, 1 in 8 from 18-24yrs in out of work and I don’t mean they don’t have any qualifications in front of them. 1 in 5 that attend university now, are financially worse off for the rest of their life’s. It would have been better if they never attended. Lastly the cost of houses, taxes and inflation has ballooned post pandemic, it’s not worth taking on new employees. But also the introduction of AI, we are at a point where we know AI will affect the jobs market. But companies are unsure what areas are exactly going to be effected. So if AI is going to effect you job, companies don’t want to pay redundancy. They are happy to wait and see how AI will effect the jobs market. Lastly employers haven’t gotten their heads around older people will have to work longer, we still see 50yrs as 10yrs of work. We don’t see 50yrs as 17yrs of work. That mindset is their. But with youth employment and life goals been put off by younger people, who are willing to do 60-70-80+ hrs why do I want someone who knows the industry. When I can pay them less than you. It ends up then the old blaming the young for not getting jobs, while the young blames the old and unable to reach milestone in life that you achieved in your early 20’s

I haven't heard the term "tuque" since I had a Canadian hockey player roommate many years ago! With your neighbors being immigrants, I'm wondering if they live in these houses with a large extended family?
For example the family from Iraq (the kurds) are a father in his mid 50's and the mother probably late 40's but looks older. They have 7 or 8 children ranging in age from about 5 to 23+ The mom and dad don't work (I don't know where their money comes from) but they rent the nice house 2 doors down from me. They are very nice people though. When my wife and I first moved into our house they welcomed us by bringing over Arabic tea and pastries. Other families own their house. The Vietnamese family just moved next door 2 years ago. He is a Canadian soldier (he is from Vancouver) and the wife is straight from Vietnam. They have 3 little girls :)
Ha Ha that is funny Christina. I will get right on putting together more videos :) Thank you so much for always supporting me through this channel :) Much appreciation Martin
Age discrimination is often connected to liability. Companies worry that an older person may get hurt on the job or cause another worker to get hurt. To prevent lawsuits and court appearances, liability is the favorite excuse used by an employer for firing middle-aged employees.
Stagnant means 'no flow or lacking movement' - so has nothing to do with employers wanting to dominate employees. Employers have too high expectations and I do believe they seek younger people they can control, will accept lower pay or even, dare I say it, possess greater energy, whatever that means these days, but it could mean older people have less stamina or don't have the right 'look' or attractiveness for certain roles, again whatever that translates into.
I can appreciate your comment. If you come back here and comment often that will help though. 😊 Just saying 😃🙏 Oh by the way how do you have so many subscribers but no videos? 😝

The Vietnamese family just moved next door 2 years ago. He is a Canadian soldier (he is from Vancouver) and the wife is straight from Vietnam. They have 3 little girls :)
You not on!y need an updated resume but a cover letter as well.
Running your videos while putting together a cat cage. Hopefully you have a few hours uploaded because this is going to take a bit! Cheers!
Age discrimination is alive and well.
