I like them both but they're very different bikes... Tuareg is one of the best ADV options for someone who can only own one bike and wants to ride both onroad and off (and moderately challenging offroad... not just dirt roads). The GS is a good choice for someone who can only own one bike and wants to ride on tarmac, dirt roads... and maybe the very occasional foray off groomed surfaces (VERY occasional) or who owns multiple bikes but wants a big comfortable and well mannered ADV bike for primarily tarmac use. Both are bikes that you give up some things to get other things... but both are quite good at what they're good at. Having said that... the IMU is more than an on paper difference... I don't buy bikes without IMU's anymore if they're more than pure offroad or very limited use. Even my lightweight (Offroad biased) ADV bike (Husqvarna 701 Enduro modified for ADV use) has an IMU. The whole point of ABS is that it's always awake and working 100%. It's possible to outbrake the simple models in a very, very special circumstance. For example, on track, with a fast bike (and no IMU). Sometimes there are mechanical reasons to remove it (too much fluid, long pipes, heat soak, bad feel on the limit). Anyway, I digress. Just bought a new 2023 Aprilia Tuareg! It’s absolutely an amazing bike app around! I was worried about the power not being there but this 660 actually scoots! The price is really great considering the bigger bikes!
After waiting for the new Honda Transalp last year and being told it wasn’t coming to the US, I went looking on RUclips for something else… and the Tuareg showed up. After looking at all the specs and realizing that the aprilia was 15 miles away, I was a no brainer. KTM dealer never call me back on their new models but again, after looking at the Tuareg… tubeless tires, 4 engine modes, cruise control, and more. I’ve an older Tiger 800 which I love but he aprilia really checks all the boxes. Nice video!
Funnily enough, it was cruise and tubeless tyres that stood out for me too. On my motorcycle tours I deal with many punctures every year. Plugging tubeless tyres is a 20-30 minutes stop, whereas tubes can be an hour or more, depending on the bike.

Excellent review, enjoyed your enthusiasm and humor. You really wrung its neck properly in the twisties and autobahn and showed that it is quite accomplished at both. We already knew offroad is good from other reviews where it's actually legal to shred dirt paths. Sweet roads in the Pfalz, really must make my way up there again from the Schwarzwald in the spring.
Great review. I purchased my 2023 BMW GS Adventure in March this year. 3 months later I bought a 2023 Aprilia Touraeg 660. I am fortunate to be able to own both of these great motorcycles. Love the BMW it is my Cadillac. The Aprilia is much lighter and it is sport motorcycle. Great review
Well that's the best tarmac review on the Tuareg I've seen and it's eased my concern as I've just chopped my 1250gs rallye te in for one and am awaiting delivery. Thanks still think I'll miss the gs grunt but 34k in 3.5 yrs time to move on. Cheers

I just traded in my Africa Twin for a Tuareg. Couldn't be happier! SO much more nimble, only slightly down on power, and despite being only 50 lbs lighter, it feels like it's over 100lbs lighter because of better weight distribution.
I’ve been watching a ton of motovlogs about adventure bikes, and I keep on coming back to the Tuareg. I was going to wait a bit for my 1st adventure bike but I’m sold. Now to break it to my wife. Great job brother!
This review put a smile on my face. Sold my Africa twin for this and was worried about power loss, after watching your review I feel convinced that i made a good decision with Tuareg!
I’m considering downsizing from my KTM 1290 Super Adventure R to either this Tuareg or the Yamaha T700. I’ve tested the T700 already and I love it, but the absence of cruise control is close to be a deal breaker. I’ll test the Tuareg this Saturday... then I’ll have a hard choice to make 🤔 Thank you for your excellent review 👍👍
Wow, first time watcher and very impressed 😂.... Am coming off an enduro history with a couple 600cc sport bikes along the way. I believe I've fallen in love with the Aprilla 660 after many RUclips reviews and you Sir, just made my mind clear of all the other lessor options. Have just subbed and thank you. From an Aussie 😊
The Tuareg's a great bike and it's very clear from your autobahn run that Aprilia has done its high speed homework especially with that screen design. However, unless you're absolutely 100% committed to huge amounts of extremely sketchy single track (in the right hands and with the right rubber, the Tuareg's been shown to be perfectly capable of doing that) and as long as you're happy to accept the inevitably higher running costs of the big GS, it would be hard to give up the sheer versatility of the GS in terms of its supremely luxurious fully loaded mile munching capacity.
On highway the GS has clear edge over the Tuareg, but everywhere else the Tuareg is much better. For me, anyway. GS is WAY too heavy offroad (not only for sketchy single track, pretty much any offroad thats not just a dusty country road).
Awesome video! Thumbs up. My personal opinion on the issue you’ve been rising throughout the test is: if you find yourself happy swapping a big Beemer with the Tuareg then you haven’t been using your GS for what it suits best.
Yes the GS is the bike for Starbucks coffee runs, bought a new 1250 last year and kept it for 2 months and did 4000 miles on it. It’s perhaps the least inspiring bike I’ve ever ridden..there isn’t a tiny sniff of excitement when riding it. Not for me…I need my bikes to inspire
That honk is what you expect on an aftermarket airbox, not something factory. You hit the nail on the head in your video. Aprilia didn't have their hands tied making this bike. The transalp is a massive compromise. Honda should look at the KTM play book. Make multiple versions of each size. Bigger and better don't have to be synonmous
@BTGMoto I'm in the same perdicament, I own a KTM 1290 SAR, the 1250gs equivalent. I was thinking to downgrade as well to the tuareg. The bigger bikes are going to cope better with long distances especially autobahn kilometers. They can also better handle the weight you add from luggage and tools. It is always a trade off, you have a more nimble bike in the off-road and still plenty capable onroad.
I was surprised by how heavy the 850GSA was when I test rode one. In fact, I'd say a basic 1250 "feels" lighter in many situations because of the low-slung mass. The 660 will feel much lighter than both
I'm curious to know if you already tested the Moto Guzzi V85TT. Taking this video as subject, it makes sense talk about the Guzzi.. same power as the Touareg, shaft drive and engine caracter like the GS, probably very stable and comfortable for touring, but no so sure in off road.. I really like the all package, and the retro look is 🔝! 👌 Congratulations for the excellent review. Really glad I come across your channel 🙂
I looked at it in the flesh and on paper, but figured it was almost as heavy as the GS, but without any of the high tech stuff. Now, let's talk about the upcoming Stelvio remake...
Weirdly, I actually have a mom'n'pop Aprilia dealer in the next village, whereas I have to ride over 4 hours (return) for a half-decent BMW service. German things.
Subscribed & in before your channel goes through the roof! Maybe the latest 890 Adventure would nicely split the difference between the Tuareg and the GS?
I rode a 790 demo and found it lots of fun, but a bit vibey and less well protected at motorway speeds. Maybe I should take the GoPro and try a new 890 next?
There was a time years ago were I traded my 2014 bmw r1200gs for a brand new bmw 850 gsa, and even when the 850 was super nice on the highway, just moving it on the garage was dramatic compared to the gs, since all the way was located up! And that 850 weights about the same as the gs! Regardless, I regretted it,and also have a instance were I have to brake hard on the 850 and that thing was all over the place! There is not other adventure bike in the world that have the stability under brakes tjat the gs have! I traded tjat 850 for my current 2018 gs rallye! I will buy the aprilia and keep the gs!
I have the R1250 GS and have been considering the Aprilia but was wondering if it’s “top heavy” as every twin I have tried they are more top heavy than the GS
oh ffs... Torque is the thing that makes the piston and the cranksgaft go, RPM is the multiplier and POWER is the result !!! Power at the rear wheel is what makes us go !!!
Good effort, however its the same ol review as everyone. Why no one mentions the dealer/service network support? How about the bike maintenence? Is this bike going to go to the shop for everything like the Desert X?
I saw my father turn from a adv rider, mostly offroad, only camping, campfire cooking into a 'I only go highway and only stay in 5 star hotels' guy right after he got the gs1250. So no I would never suggest someone a gs, never.
Hi, on movie in 23:20 you are reducing the gear very fast to the 1th gear, is this gear box not destroy with this, its ok reducing to 1 gear on move, I turn to one only on full stop, and i very intresting about this, are the new gear box preapare for reducing to one on move ?
Yep, you can easily change to first while moving, that's not a problem on motorcycles at all. Just be aware that the combination of engine braking and gear reduction means you're likely to lock the rear wheel in loose ground. On this bike the quick-shifter was matching the revs for me, and also this bike has a slipper clutch. Other bikes without these systems will be more difficult for sure!
I had a go of my mates (coming off my zx9r) and my first thought was how squishy (in a good way) the suspension was. NB my 9 is set up for comfort, and - with it's big old sport-tourey seat - actually is quite humane. But yeah - the toe-rag felt pretty, pretty good. Tempting, in fact. Btw - what's your accent? It sounds like Cheshire way - south side?
Top review Dale .. I was wondering the same having a Ktm 990 adv, but i was lookin for lighter and cheaper bike in manteniance and fuel cons. But i'm not sure if i want to leave the 990 engine performance 🫠🫠
Curious to know what your height is. I'm wondering if I need a taller windscreen for 1.84m. Sorry if you mentioned it in the video, might've missed it.
I didn't but it's a great point. I'm about 1.76m. I am literally editing a video right now with an aftermarket screen, this bumps the turbulence much higher up, and I'd guess you'd be in the quiet spot again. Should be up next week!
The BMW is a fat, unwieldy behemoth off road, that’s why you would want to “downgrade.” But if you want a status symbol to impress other graybeards on the tarmac, then yeah, the BMW wins
The “be a racist” moto I love it 😂 btw I’m planing to get my tuareg before the summer. Do you recommend it over the new transalp which nobody knows when it’s comming in the UK?
So I put off getting the Aprilia, because I was gonna get the Transalp. But it looked a bit cheap, and it was more money than the Tuareg here in Germany. And it had pretty crappy suspension in comparison, and no Cruise. So I just bought the Tuareg last month.
I hit a deer on that trip to MOAB i told you about and almost died, tuareg is totaled broke my clavicle and now im on a pikes peak v4s, enjoy tuareg is great was loving it unit@@btgmoto
There is no substitute for cubic inches ! Bigger is Better most the time and weight is much easier to deal with on the road instead of the trail . But if you are doing Highway miles then it’s all about cubic inches, power. A small bike is always easier to handle in the woods. It’s all what are you going to use it for. Very nice bike .
Great review! but keep your hands on the bars please 🤦🏻♂️ ok a quick demo n then back on 😬 the roads there are smooth but some lemon in the UK will see that and think yea ill do the same on our roads 😳 have you tried the KTM,s btw, i think they may suit you if you like the throttle response of the Tuareg, similar bikes, Ducati, MVAugusta are ok but i think the KTM,s take top prize all round, they sometimes need some tweaking but from the 790,890,1290 range they totally rock
It is unfair to compare just the finished products. The whole package has to be checked out too …… imagine buying a motor bike and having no service back up or local agent.
I will consider that in future. Luckily here in Germany all manufacturers are pretty well represented, though Aprilia tends to be in mom and pop mutli-franchise operations rather than big posh solus dealers
Proof of how overrated the gs's are. I don't understand why you put so much emphasis on how an ADV bike obviously made to focus more on it's offroad capabilities performs on the 'bahn, though.
It's pretty wild how polarised the opinions are. I didn't like the old ones, but from the 1200 on, they're incredible pieces of kit, and hooligan tools too
If I look around, many owners want to downsize. Me too. And maybe Tuareg is the best choice. Greetings from Dresden, Germany. Thank you for that great video! 👍😍
The answer is have both. I own a 2023 1250 GS Adventure . I am lucky I can also buy a Turega. The Aprilia is much lighter to pickup if dropped in the dirt/desert. Looking forward to picking up my Turega soon. Just eating for some accessories to arrive so the dealer can install them before I take delicery

I looked at it in the flesh and on paper, but figured it was almost as heavy as the GS, but without any of the high tech stuff. Now, let's talk about the upcoming Stelvio remake...
Nice review! So no need to hesitate with uploading...
Can't do anything about Eifel weather on lense in the beginnig 😉
Tenere next?
So I did ride the Tenere World Raid (not on video, unfortunately) but I still bought the Tuareg in the end
Thank you after logo king your vidéo i bought a tuareg in rend. It s a fantastic Bike. Motor and cycle. Obviously we dont need 250 kilogrammes
Thanks!
For me, if i spent the money, id go with the BMW. Better dealer support here in the USA
@@btgmoto Well, what have you go to lose 😁
Had both, aprilia tuareg all day it's almost a perfect bike
I'm loving mine so far
im a gsa owner are they perfect no but they are good i tried the tuareg and it was very nice so pay your money and enjoy either
Definitely enjoyed the GS, and the first month with the Tuareg was a blast so far
Two bikes that couldn't be more different unless one was a 2-stroke.
This is more about the dilemma of downsizing generally, and battling perceptions that somehow a bike less than 1000cc is now a small bike.
Is the 850GS like 504lbs wet abs the 1250GS like 530-600lbs depending on the version though?
Coming from an 800GS, also top heavy, I feel your pain!
@Urban Adventurer the 850 gsa (adventure) is 538 pds, the 2014 gs is 541 pds, the gsa is 600.
@@12masterr ok thanks. I must be thinking of the regular 850 that’s a little over 500lbs. Wow the 850GSA is big!
I have the R1250 GS and have been considering the Aprilia but was wondering if it’s “top heavy” as every twin I have tried they are more top heavy than the GS
It's nowhere near as top heavy as the 800 or 850 BMWs, or even the Tenere. I was pleasently surprised.
amazing video and lots of great points of interest
Thank you very much!
Great review, I’m seriously tempted to trade up from my Pegaso Factory 660 for this. Just the Peg owes me nothing and will this be £10k better?
Yes it will
Ooffff.... that's a tough choice, so you're gonna need a test ride.
Great video. Love the candid reaction to the ride.
Thanks!
oh ffs... Torque is the thing that makes the piston and the cranksgaft go, RPM is the multiplier and POWER is the result !!! Power at the rear wheel is what makes us go !!!
Power is just rate of torque, but my brain gets confuzzled sometimes
Good effort, however its the same ol review as everyone. Why no one mentions the dealer/service network support? How about the bike maintenence? Is this bike going to go to the shop for everything like the Desert X?
Good points! Funniest thing so far is that chain adjustment tools don't come with the bike. Modern life.
I saw my father turn from a adv rider, mostly offroad, only camping, campfire cooking into a 'I only go highway and only stay in 5 star hotels' guy right after he got the gs1250. So no I would never suggest someone a gs, never.
I'm not sure you can 100% blame that on the GS... I still ride my GS, and it's only 18 months since I pitched a tent.... oh, shit! ;)
Thorough review, well done! Sub'd
Thanks for subbing!
T'other side of t'Pennines tha lad
@@btgmoto That's where I am - between York and Beverley. Loads drier over this side!
Top review Dale .. I was wondering the same having a Ktm 990 adv, but i was lookin for lighter and cheaper bike in manteniance and fuel cons. But i'm not sure if i want to leave the 990 engine performance 🫠🫠
I loved my 990 adv! Now i have a GS1200LC and also a Tuareg 660! All wonderful bikes! 990-performance was great, but also a great consumer of fuel !
The Vtwin is pretty special, I have to admit. I used to have a 950, but the servicing scares me on those.
Picking one up Saturday
And, are you happy?
@@btgmoto yes
25:10 caught me off guard AHAHHA im in tears 🤣
Ahhh am ay SEMI proFESSIONAL racecar DRIVAH
Nice review. Tell us about the brakes...
I have test rided Tuareg. Its got Brembo brakes, cant go wrong with them, so yes, they are good.
Definitely less bite on tarmac, but great feel off road. I might upgrade pads and see how it goes.
New subscriber here. Great vid!
Thanks for subbing
what is better yamaha 700 T or aprilla 660 all around...which one would you choose for a trip around the world...
Aprilia of course!
RTW? Honda CL500...spend the spare cash getting it RTW ready,Rally Raid hubs,etc....T7,Aprilia 660 are £15k+ to get ready
Around the world? You need a global parts network... so probably the Yamaha. But I'm not going around the world, so Aprilia works for me :)
less is more ?
More is often less too!
Very good review!
Thanks mate!
I want one..
Can recommend!
@@btgmoto great, thanks for the quick response! Looking forward to see the new video.
Those mirrors look identical to GS
Similar, but am about to replace them in the next video
The BMW is a fat, unwieldy behemoth off road, that’s why you would want to “downgrade.” But if you want a status symbol to impress other graybeards on the tarmac, then yeah, the BMW wins
The only people impressed by a clean GS... well, I don't wanna impress those guys lol
Tuareg!!!!!
Correct!
fricken love my toureg. 4200 miles this year.
Any issues so far?
@@richardhretczak536 zero.
@@Rob-tl9md I’m glad to hear that. I wish you many more happy miles. Ride safe and Merry Christmas.
Still good? I just picked mine up
@@btgmoto absolutely
What a great bike
Yep, so good, I bought one
GS is 70% road and 30% dirt the Tuareg is 70% dirt and 30% road depends on what sort of riding you prefer i would go the Tuareg over the GS all day
To be fair, I think the Aprilia is an excellent road bike too.
@btgmoto oh I have no doubt it's one of the 2 bikes I'm trying to decide between when I finally go onto my full licence and can ride them lol
so, what happened mate?
Great question! New video just gone up!
Have the tuareg brilliant machine
How long you have it? Any issues? Considering one.
@Richard Hretczak no issues and end of month I'm riding 3000 miles to moab will do off road there and ride back
I did buy it, nearly 1 year later lol
I hit a deer on that trip to MOAB i told you about and almost died, tuareg is totaled broke my clavicle and now im on a pikes peak v4s, enjoy tuareg is great was loving it unit@@btgmoto
@@SP-xd8gs holy crap dude!!!! 😬 Glad you survived!
Good review👍🏼, and i like your joke haha. Grtz from Holland
Thanks!
Africa twin, Touareg 660 or Norden 901????
All depends what you want to do with it.
The first choice. Love my ATAS.
Good question. I found the AT a bit too top heavy, the Norden 901 was awesome but vibrated a LOT. I picked the Tuareg in the end
Apples and Oranges
And yet, here I am, with my own money, trying to choose between them. I bought the Aprilia in the end!
Absolutely correct.
"Be a racist" cracked me up, haha.
Literally says this to me on the dashboard every day
Great review! but keep your hands on the bars please 🤦🏻♂️ ok a quick demo n then back on 😬 the roads there are smooth but some lemon in the UK will see that and think yea ill do the same on our roads 😳 have you tried the KTM,s btw, i think they may suit you if you like the throttle response of the Tuareg, similar bikes, Ducati, MVAugusta are ok but i think the KTM,s take top prize all round, they sometimes need some tweaking but from the 790,890,1290 range they totally rock
They rock for sure, but the vibes annoy the pith out of me
It is unfair to compare just the finished products.
Emotions 😁
All good ones, I hope!
Lol I've cruised at 100 mph on mine for a couple hours no problem.
I'm a fan of the cruise control for sure. Just hate the blinking when I leave it 'ready'
@@btgmoto for me it doesn't bother me but I understand why it bothers some
Volvo truck or Subaru SUV?
V8 MAN eating that wee Mercedes Benz truck there 😂
I don't need a Baja truck, so that's my choice lol
must have
indeed
Nice Video mate.
But I absolutely dislike the intake "noot noot".
That's just 125cc 4 Stroke Earrape
I love it. Go figure! ;)
Completely different bikes in different classes.
And yet, here I am choosing betweent them, with my own money. And I just bought the Tuareg!
Tuareg is nomber 1.
It's a great bike
WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON THE ROAD? THIS IS A TT BIKE MAN
Hey, it's gotta do both things :)
Apples to candles? One is heavyweight the other one middle weight! There’s no comparison unless you mean practicality…
I'll find out more after my first tour on the new Tuareg. Corsica in April!
Proof of how overrated the gs's are. I don't understand why you put so much emphasis on how an ADV bike obviously made to focus more on it's offroad capabilities performs on the 'bahn, though.
I am interested in autobahn and mile munching because that's part of what my bike needs to do. I'm buying a bike for me, not for anybody else. 😅🙏
I mean, I'm looking at buying a Tuareg to be a strictly road touring bike. These bikes are not true offroad machines anyway.
Why do people talk so much S--t about GS motorcycles. And yes I have owned two of them before I engaged my brain from all the complete nonsense hype.
It's pretty wild how polarised the opinions are. I didn't like the old ones, but from the 1200 on, they're incredible pieces of kit, and hooligan tools too
ajp pr7 😄
Yeah, but... naaaaah
Please take time to wipe your lenses.
Ha ha yeah, definitely gonna check that more often from now on. That was a crazy foggy day.
What a silly comparison. No one would be cross-shopping these 2 bikes!
Lol... I literally am! 😅 That's why I booked a test ride
If I look around, many owners want to downsize. Me too. And maybe Tuareg is the best choice. Greetings from Dresden, Germany.
Thank you for that great video! 👍😍
Tuareg 660 forums are full of guys who went to Tuareg 660 from their 1200 and 1250 GS.
@@geekstar2937 good to know
The answer is have both.
Aprilia, be a racist😂
Literally what it says to me every time I turn the key.
