I'm a Proud Kiwi living in Oz for the past 10 years, it gives me so much pride to know so many people world wide loved Split Enz. When we were kids we always had to change the channel when Split Enz came on TV because it scared the shit out of my younger brother, but they were just AWESOME :)
@Teina Nanai You'll be happy to know that I loved these guys here in the American state of Nebraska. If you picture Alice Springs on that bigger island next to you, you'll know what the folks in L.A. and New York think of us here in Nebraska; a flyover state in the middle of nowhere. But, never-the-less, we had cable TV and MTV back in the early 80s and these guys were getting heavy rotation on MTV. And, I loved it. What a great band. Here's a remixed extended version of this song: ruclips.net/video/38QYS9_nH-8/видео.html
Their stage antics could easily distract you from their music, but not me. Yes their antics made me smile, but their music was so well composed it raised em up above most 'pop' bands. First saw them in the UK in Preston 1978. Admired them ever since. Chuffed that 'Crowded House' went mainstream and made money, but miss the old Enz line up. But I'm an old guy now (64) so I'm bound to reminisce.
Great song, and certainly a video of this hit I've never seen before. I can only assume back when videos were in their infancy, certain self proclaimed experts thought this montage would be the big ticket to their success. Instead the stop action video was great, and fit this song perfectly.
@@cootmaster I agree, and because of your comment I decided to watch this again. Something I noticed this time was the clapping at the very end, which leads me to think it was on some TV show they were performing on, rather than the official video release. The song is good regardless, but the video with the frame was much better. Still I appreciate this rare video, as they are always interesting.
wow, a 35 year time travel moment, I remember watching this on TV as a kid and youtube delivers again as a kid I did not like this song, but as an adult this song sounds so strong and seems to improve with age
When this song came out Countdown's Molly Meldrum raved about it. Back then I was into Kiss and DEVO and strangely Adam Ant. It was also the time of AC/DC Back In Black album. And that was massive.
I love Crowded House and have just started to revisit the Split Enz back catalogue...and WOW! I'd forgotten how good these guys were, even in their early days. Love it.
No matter how much time goes by , this is Still a great song and as ever, great band and crowded house fantastic, they looked they had a lot of fun making this video the expression's on their faces are brilliant
@@ABB-ln7qu i'm having fun trying to figure the middle part, the guys walking on the ceiling (i know) but near the end the guys on the floor are they trying to replicate their "hang from the ceiling/floor" as well
It never ceases to amaze me how the mass fail to recognize how great the Enz were, so much shite around in today's music but the Enz some how have been over looked in musical quality and originality.
....(1/2/2024)....Wow.....I just heard this song, food-shopping on the store's speaker,...Loved this song,......Brought me back 40/+ years ago,......I'll be fkkn 60 this year,....Uuuugghh.....😮...!!
Such a cool look and sound, love the suits they are wearing, where can I get one like that? Considering this was 1980, they were so ahead of the times. I love the cool synthesizer solo that goes from 1:48 to 2:05 many years later still haven't heard any other band duplicate that unique sound. Music was so much more innovative, creative, surreal, dreamy, and melodic back in the 1980's .
i went to perth in 1978 while in the usn and this song and rock lobster by the b52s were my 2 favorite songs split ends being creativley different and cutting edge at that time reminded me of ric ocasik and the cars
Wow! I thought I had seen it all from the late 70's and early 80's. This is fantastic. Don't recall ever seeing this on MTV or any other video outlet. What a gem!
As A British teenager of 15 in 1980 I was fully aware that my countrymen had had the music world by the balls for decades..Beatles,Stones.The Who,Elton,Rod,Fleetwood Mac, Bee Gees,Sabbath,Zeppellin,ELO, Bowie,Bolan, sweet, Roxy and SO MANY others in SO MANY genres of music from Rock'n'roll through pshycadelia(stoned spelling!)to Heavy Metal, glam, Punk/new wave and whatever.Only a fool could deny it and given the smallness of UK and it's population, certainly in comparison to the mighty USA, we Brits have certainly made our mark.HOW WONDERFUL it was for my teenage self in 1980 to come across what I consider to be the "Holy Trinity" of "New Wave" or @ least the "popier" side of what New Wave had become by 1980.The three singles that make up that trinity were by groups who would NEVER make the UK top 40 again, whether subsequent singles deserved to or not. They are three hit singles that I have NEVER tired of playing and doubt now @ a rather mature 55(!) that I ever will. They are (drumroll please)......3) 7TEEN -THE REGENTS (UK)...2) ECHO BEACH-MARTHA &THE MUFFINS (CANADA) and, "My lords, ladies & gentlemen" the MIGHTY NUMBER 1....I GOT YOU- SPLIT ENZ (NZ).Three gold nuggets that make "the Mother country" justifiably PROUD.(Cue "stiff upper lips" and saluting of regal Queen Victoria portrait!!). Neil Finn is quite rightly held in high esteem by both British and international musicians and, as others have said, he has done NZ proud.
I think I now understand the story of the film: They are all lunatic clowns in an mental asylum room and the shot is of the view of a security camera in the corner of the ceiling, and they are going mad around it.
Maybe Neil is the only one in the asylum and the others are all his dilutions, hence the fact that he isn't wearing makeup as well as the scene where he's alone in the room. I might be over analyzing this, though. I always laugh when he says "I feel uneasy," as the others are leering over him in their creepy clown getup.
Split Enz were way ahead of their time. Still are.
I wish I could go back to my childhood and see these guys over and over again that was such awesome times ❤
The Split Enz song that truly mattered the most
These guys split enz were so interesting for there time, Its like a vaudeville act blended with a punkish newwave synth pop twist to there sound.
yes, still fresh!
James Radski - Tim and Neil Finn were the founding members here, as in Crowded House. They started both bands, and we're key members in both bands
@@joeyricci3796Neil Finn was one of the original members of Crowded House not Tim
84 kid here, grew up in Porirua NZ. Always loved the music, but never treasured this band until now.
Simply awesome New Zealand band. They did the Kiwis proud . They were so original and so talented
Watched MTV all hours waiting to hear this song

Did he get over being scared?

lol I was the same as your younger brother. Used to leave the room (*
LOL
Neil Finn has more musical talent than any 20 contemporaneous bands you'd care to name.
Damn Skippy!
Oingo boingo way better
He’s written a few good songs, but Tim’s were way better.
Crowded House

Hmm weird. For me the song has the same effect now as a 35 year old as it did when I heard it as a kid. Never gets old.

leokimvideo ofc you prolly didnt like it cause it was scary as a kid :)
Yeah after all these years of rap and hip hop bull shite (sic) this music sounds even better today than then. Don't it?

I love the sound emerging of the keyboads. It's amazing even years and years later, it's like a first time

I only remember Paul Hogan video

Sure miss the 80's. pure energy back then
me too even though I was 8 here January 1 1990 music died 80s best decade 1980-1988

I can't look away when Eddie Rayner is on screen, he was so freakin' beautiful.
This could still be up there with other music of today, well even better!!! Timeless.
An overlooked 80's gem
Fantastic piece of music, so enjoyed it when it was first released. Love those dead pan faces
A terrific song and always will be.
Great group !
Never seen this.Their videos were always so innovative.
Such talent. These guys were amazing!!!
a song thats last through the years!!! crank it up everytime!

***** Keeping the Enz a secret seem's quite easy it seem's.
But we are quite many who really LOVE The Finns & co. And I'm from Sweden, as far from Kiwiland as you can get (almost) :)
Love this ! Neil making weird faces is awesome !
to all those VHS music vids i had recorded from NZ TV in the 80s, only to have my brothers flatmate record over them

Such a good song
Instant time machine back to the best of the 80s
Iconic "New Wave" song here!!
Hello from California! 💖 I still hear this song when I’m driving and switch it to Sirius XM on the 80s channel, the 80s had the best music! 😁

I got the laser etched album on the Columbia House club thru the mail. I was in 6th grade.
Love this song and them in the picture video doing this.
LOVE!! As an American, all I ever saw was the MTV video...where they all wear black. Neil was a huge crush of mine because of that video.
Aah the faces & theatricals!
A completely overlooked band in the States. I turned my college buddies onto them way back when. At get togethers the ENDZ always make an appearance.
