I'll try to help at least with my knowledge a little bit. So the shows we know that from the original yu-gi-oh to 5ds they are connected as they have references to each other but then in zexal it gets werid with timeline but there is no need to watch in order as there is no story connection Now for the plots of the shows Yu-gi-oh: Yugi main character puts a puzzle together which has the spirit of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh in it and he wants to remember who he is. Yu-gi-oh Gx: Jaden The main character goes to a card playing high school and just for reference the first episodes are slice of life but then it gets serious. Yu-gi-oh 5ds: Yusei the protagonist lives in the satellite district which basically is the ghetto and yusei wants to get out of there and go to the rich city to get his card back from his rival who stole both that and his original motorcycle which he built. Also by the way 5ds stands for 5 dragons. Yu-gi-oh Zexal: Yuma has a key which is the necklace he has given to him by his father and he finds a gate which unlocks his friend which is the ghost you saw his name is astral.The series involves yuma growing as a person and a duelist as time grows on from more of a kid to a serious person. Yu-gi-oh Arc V: This ones a little complicated to explain without spoliers but ill try basically we have the main character Yuya whos who thing is he wants to entertain people with his duels which is why his cards are circus themed but then it gets really serious. Well i tried but here are a few notes Gx's 4th season never got a dub amd that might be due to it being too dark and Also there cards are not summons mostly thats how play the game for the most part. Anyways hope this helps.
Look, Zexal may have a slow start, but it gets serious quick. Yu-Gi-Oh! wouldn't be Yu-Gi-Oh! without children dying. It gets really emotional, and aside from reruns of the technically not but the first series (because there is a season 0 that is better than all Yugioh series because it isn't about card games and it about literal terrorism and mind games/punishment), Zexal was the series that I grew up with. However, with Yu-Gi-Oh!, it is basically objective that you need to watch the sub. The sub and dub are literally two different things, and one is hot garbage, that being the dub. I liked Zexal's dub....but no, just watch subbed.

As a big Yu-Gi-Oh fan, I think the first episode of Duel Monsters/the original season 1 is pretty bad with how it tries to cram a season worth of content into one episode, while failing to establish any stakes from the original story. Now if you're talking about season 0 episode 1 that's a different story, it's where anyone should begin in this day and age.

Yeah I really recommend Yu-Gi-Oh 5ds (the motorcycle show). It's my favorite of all Yu-Gi-Oh series (more mature themes) second to the original Yu-Gi-Oh (the Egypt one). If you are going to watch Yu-Gi-Oh 5ds, I recommend it subbed, although dub ain't so bad, it was never finished. So it's incomplete. Also, the censured some things, so I am always recommending subbed. (Dub ain't that bad, but as I have mentioned, it's incomplete)
5Ds dub doesn't try to take all emotions out of emotional moments like the dub of the original, nor does it make fun of the show it's translating like the dub of GX, so it may be perfect for a first timer of the franchise, but as you said it's incomplete. 5Ds is far from my favourite, but since it starts off with serious tone and high stakes from the first episode it may be a good starting point, both dub or sub.
5D’s was awesome! So was GX, Zexal, and Vrains. Didn’t care for arc 5 much. I think 5D’s Vrains, GX Zexal and The original are equally good but obviously GX and the Original will always be iconic.

They were probably waiting for the dub to get picked up for broadcast on US television, but that never happened in the end.
