The novel Refugee, by author Alan Gratz, follows three families, generations apart, as they escape from their dangerous homelands. Separated by history and geography, they nonetheless all share the desire to be free from oppression. The main characters are:
Josef Landau, a 12-year-old Jewish boy who lives in Germany, in 1938. His family flees from the Nazis by sailing to Havana. Josef is preoccupied with what it means to become a man in order to protect his family.
Isabel Fernandez, an 11-year-old Cuban girl living under Fidel Castro’s communist regime, in 1994. Desperate to become free and escape poverty, she and her family and friends flee to Miami. Isabel must leave her passion for playing the trumpet behind as she tries to save her family.
Mahmoud Bishara, a 12-year-old Muslim boy who lives in Syria, in 2015. After bombs from the raging civil war destroy their home, Mahmoud and his family flee to Germany. He tries hard not to attract attention that would put his family at risk.
Josef
Berlin, Germany-1938
The novel starts with Josef waking up to the Nazis invading his family’s home in Berlin. It is the night of Kristallnacht,” or “Night of Broken Glass,” when Jewish families and synagogues are attacked. His father is arrested and sent to the Dachau concentration camp.
Josef
Hamburg, Germany-1939
Six months later, Josef, his mother, and sister meet his father in Hamburg after he is released from Dachau. They are all forced to wear their Star of David armbands. Josef’s mother has booked them on a passenger ship to Cuba. Josef is shocked to see his father is thin, paranoid, and severely traumatized.
Isabel
Havana, Cuba-1994
Isabel is playing her beloved trumpet in downtown Havana when a violent riot erupts. People are starving under Fidel Castro’s regime. Isabel’s father and grandfather are among the protesters and Isabel rushes to protect her father as he is beaten by police.
Isabel
Just outside Havana, Cuba-1994
Isabel and her family leave Cuba the next day. Isabel secretly sells her trumpet in exchange for gas to make the journey to Miami. Her mother, father, and grandfather join her best friend Ivan and his parents on a rickety homemade boat. As they are pushing off from shore, Ivan’s older brother and his girlfriend, both police officers, unexpectedly rush from the beach to join them. They narrowly escape gunshots when other policemen fire at them.
Mahmoud
Aleppo, Syria-2015
Mahmoud is living with his family in war-torn Aleppo, Syria. When a missile explodes in their apartment, they barely escape unharmed. Mahmoud’s father decides that they will flee to Germany.
Mahmoud
Just outside Aleppo, Syria-2015
Traveling by road from Aleppo, the family abandons both their car and their possessions when bullets tear into the side of the vehicle. They trek by foot for several hours to the Turkish border by following a map on their cell phone.
Josef
Somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean-1939
Meanwhile back in 1939, Josef’s family has settled on a ship with other Jewish families. They feel safe for the first time in years. Josef even has his bar mitzvah on board, but soon discovers there are a few outspoken Nazi sympathizers among the crew.
Josef
Just outside Havana, Cuba-1939
When the ship arrives in Cuba, the passengers are not allowed to disembark. Soon after, Nazi crew members ransack Josef’s family-cabin, pushing his father to the brink of insanity. In desperation, he jumps overboard but a Cuban police officer, the young Mariano Padron, who will one day be grandfather to Isabel, jumps in the water and saves him from drowning.
Isabel
Somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean, outside of Cuba-1994
Isabel is still on the boat with her family and friends when the motor stops. A large tanker barrels toward them and their boat capsizes from the waves. Isabel rescues Ivan’s father who nearly drowns. Everyone survives, but the boat begins to take on water.
Isabel
The Atlantic Ocean and the Bahamas-1994
Blown off course and landing in the Bahamas, the refugees are forced to turn around and then decide to continue on to Miami. Each takes turns hanging onto the outside of the leaking boat so it won’t sink. Ivan bleeds to death after being attacked by a shark.
Mahmoud
Izmir, Turkey, and the Mediterranean Sea-2015
In Turkey, Mahmoud and his family hire a smuggler to take them to Greece. They board an inflatable raft with other refugees that pops in a storm. Mahmoud’s mother on the brink of drowning, surrenders the baby Hana to a passing boat. The family is eventually rescued.

My daughter is in 5th grade and chose this book for her reading project. I thought it was quite advantageous for her to choose such a long book but I am so glad she is reading this. I hope it gives her appreciation for the country she lives in and all of the freedoms she (and all of us) are so graciously afforded.
Holy shit shes smart Im in 11th grade and I cant even do this shit
@@chasepetersen9978I wouldn’t swear in front of a parent
The end is literally so sad
Yea I read this in 6th grade
Nice , I am able to understand the accents of words.
current 8th grader, this book is amazing. My class is reading it currently and I always leave the class excited from the next day to read more!
I realized something. So, in Isabel's story, her lito jumps out the boat, and says he was a Cuban policeman that pushed away Jewish people, and when they are naming the ship, he mentions the st. Louis, the name of the ship that Josef was on. So, I think that Isabel's lito was a cuban policemen.
Yeah I think so too
It confirmed in the book, rito isabels grandfather was the policeman who saved Joseph’s father when he jumps in the water. Remember the policeman who save josefs father end kept saying manyana? That’s rito! The book said in the chapter he jumped out if you listen to it.
@@brooke_0911 that's what I said..
@@maddy1847_fly oh! I thought since you said “I think” you were saying it’s a theory.
it is, all the stories connect as seen in the last chapter with mahmoud and ruthie as an elderly woman
This persons guide about the book saved me
The book is so interesting
Thank you so much. I did this book for a book talk.
Happy to help!
you are a life saver. I have an english test on the entire book today. I just needed a review. Thank You.
something about josef's shoulders tho
Even though I already read the book, sometimes I need a summary to just get the whole story in one piece
I am reading this book now, as an 8th I like this book but still I am not emotionally connected to this book, whenever I read a book I feel a sense of connection with the characters but as compared to this book except for Isabel I didn’t felt that heartwarming connection with other characters, but overall the storyline, climax, and the ending were on spot even though I felt sometimes it was going too fast.
The author came a year before i was in middle school my friend who was 6th grade at that time(now 7th) said he came lol I hope i meet him
Thank you!
I have a test tomorrow even though I did read it I used this to make a list of important events in the story to study, even though this video is 4 years old it still holds up great 👍

thanks for this. pictures look great also.
Thank you grade saver you saved my grade
hey whats a conflict in the book
Each of the stories had one or more people who sacrificed themselves in order to let the rest live
Like Isabel's Grandfather and Ivan. Josef, his father, and mother who sacrificed to save Ruthie. And Mahmoud's baby sister.
Here are some (1 from each person for each section)
Man vs. Man
* Mahmoud’s family vs. Serbian robbing them at gunpoint
* Isabel’s father vs. the Cuban police officers
* Josef vs. Schiendick (a nazi)
Man vs. Self
* Lito (Isabel’s grandfather) suffering from guilt of turning the Jews away from Cuba
* Josef’s father vs. his fear of going back to a concentration camp.. tries to drown himself
* Mahmoud vs. his guilt of getting his mother to give up Hana (his little sister)
Man vs. Nature
* Isabel’s group vs. the storm and sharks
* Mahmoud vs. long trek to Germany
* Josef’s father and Lito vs. sharks and water (drowning)
Man vs. Society
* Isabel and her family vs. communism and Fidel Castro’s leadership
* Josef and his family vs. nazis and racism
* Mahmoud and his family vs. racism from countries surrounding Syria. They see Syrians as invisible or pests.
Man vs. Machine/Man Made Things
* Isabel’s group vs. the ship that almost crushes them
* Josef vs. the ship moving away from Cuba where his father was (possibly)
* Mahmoud vs. raft like vehicle that breaks or car that cannot be driven (possibly)
This is a year late so if this couldn’t help you, I hope it helps anyone else who reads it! God bless!
Thank you so much this save me from getting a bad grade on my test
Im in sixth grade currently and love reading his books
will... I have to do an book review of this book. and this save my life!!!! thankyou Grade Saver! (already subscribe)
I just finished this book in march and I love it. But I’m traumatized after when Ivan’s death, the sacrifice of Josef and the exchange of the baby Hana bishara.
I’m so mad because I was supposed to read this over the summer and forget. I loved the book so much but I didn’t have the time I needed to finish it since I have to take the test tomorrow. I wish I would have gotten to read it but I simply couldn’t.
I read this in third grade, and loved it. In my opinion, a must read.
