Do you know if the evo 16 does class compliant audio? Another example of an interface that does class combined audio would be the tascam model 12. Granted that’s a mixer, but it also does class compliant audio (by which I mean I can plug The tascam model 12 into my MPC and it will be recognized as an available audio interface). How do you decide when & when not to compress? or is it just for the sake of the demo no compression's been used on this track. Great version & beautifully recorded!
I find that the most important argument for using compression is the answer to the question, how will this music be listened to. Here he knows its pro audio people who have good gear or headphones to listen to this. Meaning there is no noise, good acoustics and there is good capacity to bring out the details in even quite dynamic music(good speakers/gear). If these things are different, there is noise(listenin in car), bad acoustics, and bad speakers that dont have proper dynamics, then you will have to compress to ensure all details are retained, more or less, even in these bad conditions. So, for noise, your goal is to keep the music above the noise floor, but also not get too loud that is becomes unreasonably loud. For bad acoustics, you also want to keep the volume where it stays above the reverb volume. So if one drum hit is loud, it will reverberate in the room and drown out the quieter vocal details for example. And then there is the speakers dynamics. Most consumer speakers dont have good dynamics, meaning the loud parts will mask the quiet bits. Hence again compression helps. Bring the dynamics close together and these problems will disappear. This will be better for these bad conditions, but will be non ideal for good conditions, as the dynamics will be nonexistent, which still is a very important characteristic of good music. Another reason to compress is to fix a musicians bad dynamics. Also, here another factor is how he is presenting the gear as is, and compression will distort that... Also, the musicians were very well controlled in their dynamics anyway, so no real need to compress at all.
Pretty cool! For $500 that's rather unreal. A couple of suggestions though which seem like they'd be easy to implement (maybe I'm wrong though). Having preamp Channels 1&2 accessible on the back of the unit as well as the front would be very beneficial. Not the end of the world but particularly session drummers or project studio engineers will likely have the inputs semi permanently wired into either a snake or a Patch bay. Having those cables permanently wired into the front would be an eye sore and potentially difficult to manoeuvre any XLR's into if they are part of a snake that also attaches to channels 3-8 in the back. Again, likely not a deal breaker but might be for some depending on their rack setup. Many interfaces have Hi-Z inputs on the front as an option with regular XLR inputs on the back so that they're still accessible on both sides. Also, I'm not sure that I saw the Smartgain button in the software mixer. If that's the case the Smartgain feature might not be usable for any session drummer who doesn't have easy access to their interface from their drum set (i.e. separate control room or simply having their setup more than a few feet from their drum set). Some setups are in tight spaces and manually hitting the smart gain button then trying to get back to your kit in time before the function turns off might not be very intuitive or possible depending on the setup. It looks very promising though and the preamps definitely sound amazing for the price!
I haven't been able to get anything suped up yet in terms of interfaces yet. For me, the main thing is something that can get you straight in to recording. Gotta keep the inspiration flowing and ready to tape, without nerves or overthinking getting the better of a performance!
One thing they fail to mention is, can you bypass the preamps on the combo jacks and hit the converters straight like you can with an ASP 880?? Because what is the point of potentially hitting outboard and then going through the entire preamp on the way back in?
Spectacular cover! Perfect voice for this. That auto gain function is really something. Not quite enough to get me to change over from what I have but if I were buying new it would be a big persuasion.
Hi, really so may Pros, ...about Cons...loooking at the specs (0dBFS = +10.5dBu for ADC inputs) the headroom available in tracking (x line and DI too) is much less than competitors and the same for the DAC section (0dBFS = +10.5dBu), not professional values,(0dBFS=+ 18dBFS), etc.. What about latency too ? A strange spec, there is a BALANCED out for headphones! so you need an adaptor for classical one ? Anyway I agree with you for the very high quality/price ratio...one question: is it possible to use Smart gain to find a "sweet spot" for a starting recording level, and then refine it disabling it and setting manually ? Ciao
Ooouuaaah !!! Very very good sound on Springsteen ! Fabulous voice !!!! Thank you very much for this moment. Is there a possibility for buy this version ???
always been a big fan of Audient. Still using my ID22 and the converters are top notch. They never bowed to the pressure for "latest and greatest" (example: re outfitting a 2 input interface with thunderbolt 'just because') They came straight out and said "USB2 is enough" and that was that and they were right. this looks like a SOLID unit and SO cheap, money wise. sounds amazing too. Companies like Audient, Warm Audio, Focusrite, ART, etc are heroes for those of us not rich enough to splurge on gold.
@@Producelikeapro its an honor to hear back from you. been a fan for a long time and you're doing the good work over there! We all appreciate it more than you know. cheers and have an amazing weekend!
Hello ! thank you so much for this great video ! Which quality of sound difference would you think in comparaison with the metric halo mobile io 2882 (2d expanded or with the new 3d expansion kit installed), especially for stereo monitoring output and microphone preamps ? thanks a lot for your answer and your so great reviews I view a lot
I really like the efficient and convenient workflow on the physical side of things and the constant visual feedback. Not to mention the autogain feature! The GUI seems to be well thought off as well. I was looking for a modern Audio Interface, different from the others! I'm thinking of replacing my old Saffire Liquid 56 with this, combining it with the Octopre MKIIi Dynamic I have aside by exploiting the EVOs ADAT and word clock connection options.
The Audient gear gets better and better. A real innovative company thats punching way above it's weight in that price range. For any Linux users, Audient is plug in and play straight away. Great gear and very concise video that shows amazing results can be had with this interface. Thanks very much for the video
Great video! I appreciate you taking the time to share the recording process! Thank you! What was the software you used? I am also interested in the other features that were not discussed in the video. Could you share your knowledge regarding the optical ins and outs in connecting to say, an Adat? Thanks again - very well done!
If it’s once or twice then just automate the plug in for that couple of times, if it’s a four on the floor track then you won’t need to do this at all!
How does this compare to say behringer umc1820? I had rme fireface which was great/rock solid, and now a uad solo which doesnt have any ins or outs. Looking for a cheaper reliable interface for my mixer to record 8 ins/out. Heard good things about the umc.
Waited over 2 months to get mine from Sweetwater, and now the rack ears are backordered at Audient, with no estimated time of arrival. Can't find them anywhere on the web. I wanted to slap it in a rack with my ADA8200 (or two) and a couple of preamps (GAP Pre-73 MKIII and Comp54, and a PreSonus Studio Channel) for decent budget portable recording rig, but I guess my Evo 16 will have to sit on a shelf for a couple of months. :(
I saw in one of your responses that using the line inputs allows you to bypass the pres when using an outboard pre. Is that accurate? I understand the id44 has two ins allowing this to be done but that virtually no other sub-$1,000 interface allows this; that an external pre connected to a line-in essentially runs through two convertor stages. So, please comment on the accuracy of this comment, if you will. I'm no expert, but I've read multiple comments over the past year or two in my interface research that claim the internal pres cannot be bypassed in most situations. Thanks, Warren! You da man!
This one sounds like it has biggest sounstage and sounds very bold and smooth compared to other Audient products. Seems they did a good job with converters and preamps :)
Okay, Warren, it sounds AWESOME, but please tell what else is happening to get this final result which sounds so loud, 3D and huge? What other processing is going on, busses, Master Bus and Mastering, etc?
My 8-in/8-out of 20 years ago was the Gadget Labs Wave/824. That was a great unit for its time, great quality at a great price. I still have it, but the NT 4.0 DAW I used it in has been dead for a long, long time. :-)
for latency, wich cpu/samplerate/buffer settings do you use e wich the latency in ms as result ? When you play the guitar with the smart gain analizing your performance, your playing initially is influence by the initial low recording level, so the final value found by Smartgain couldn't be the optimal one. Possible to monitor the initial performance alone in parallel, as smartgain bypassed, to let smartgain find the best values ? Ciao
This is amazing guys! what you do is pure love and for minutes i just forget about the review and EVO16 but it sounds so great...thank you all for making this beautiful song, and my special thanks to Warren as a great mentor to many of us who follow his works, tips and lessons...thank you
Audient ID44 or the Evo 16 witch would you recommend. I’m in the market , I have some outboard gear already and a apogee Rosetta for my outboard pre’s and old presonus 8 channel afar mic pre also.
My Slate VRS8 interface will not work with my new Mac Studio Max, and there's no fix, so I'm in the market for a new 8 channel interface, and I had decided on the Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre, but now this has arrived. Any chance of you doing a comparison of those two units? Sooner than later? ;-)
I think you've just helped me decide on my first ever interface. I don't want to spend too much time doing research and for a drummer just starting to record, this seems perfect. One question. I see it has a USBC or 2.0 Jack on the back. My MAC only has the USB 1.0 built in. Can I use that or is there another way?
@@Producelikeapro Sweet. And I hear that you can link 2 or 4 mic channels too for us using Sphere or Ambisonic mics. Might have to go read their manual before biting the bullet. Sounds too good to be true!!

Some setups are in tight spaces and manually hitting the smart gain button then trying to get back to your kit in time before the function turns off might not be very intuitive or possible depending on the setup.
It looks very promising though and the preamps definitely sound amazing for the price!
Question : "What does the warm setting do"
John Rambo: "It makes the sound warmer!"
Hahaha thanks
How about the "ROLAND STUDIO CAPTURE"? How good is it in comparison?
lovely version of one of my favourite Bruce songs! love the vocal, feel and Warren's tasty licks. great video, thanks Warren
I'd assume you'd be able to set the inputs as line inputs thereby bypassing the preamps? But good question I'd like to know as well.
Nah Audient told me you can't bypass the preamps.
This is a huge deciding factor when choosing a pre
McKail is incredible! This version is not available for purchase but this is McKail's arrangement. I heard it live and knew it had to be recorded.
Multitracks will be available soon
@@Producelikeapro Thx !
What's the black box on top of the evo 16 and how are you using that in conjunction with the evo?
She has such an amazing voice! Awesome demo :)
We love McKail’s voice!
Love my Evo 8. This new unit can be an amazing addition to my mobile setup!
Thanks ever so much
Hiya warren . Just got ordered my evo 8 to replace my focusrite Scarlett 18i20 . What descent budget lewitt would you recommend please. Cheers
always been a big fan of Audient.
Thanks ever so much for sharing! Yes, agreed, great to have affordable, excellent sounding gear that we can all use!
@@Producelikeapro its an honor to hear back from you. been a fan for a long time and you're doing the good work over there! We all appreciate it more than you know. cheers and have an amazing weekend!
Such a great song performed in a unique way. So nice.
Thanks ever so much
Another great demo/cover for a product, Warren. Very good reference for scope. So assume that the ADAT IN/OUTS are 8ch?
Glad you like it!
Hello ! thank you so much for this great video ! Which quality of sound difference would you think in comparaison with the metric halo mobile io 2882 (2d expanded or with the new 3d expansion kit installed), especially for stereo monitoring output and microphone preamps ? thanks a lot for your answer and your so great reviews I view a lot
Thanks ever so much for sharing Jef!
All very good points! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
The Audient gear gets better and better. A real innovative company thats punching way above it's weight in that price range. For any Linux users, Audient is plug in and play straight away. Great gear and very concise video that shows amazing results can be had with this interface. Thanks very much for the video
Thanks ever so much Joey!
Great video! I appreciate you taking the time to share the recording process! Thank you! What was the software you used? I am also interested in the other features that were not discussed in the video. Could you share your knowledge regarding the optical ins and outs in connecting to say, an Adat? Thanks again - very well done!
beautyful performance and recording session !
Looks like a great option for those of us in home studios with smaller budgets
Fantastic!
14:40 that's a great technique! if the player hit's the snare at the same time though ... ?
If it’s once or twice then just automate the plug in for that couple of times, if it’s a four on the floor track then you won’t need to do this at all!
@Dystopian Farmer I guess disco is out then haha
@Dystopian Farmer hit me with a rhythm stick!
You da man!
I will double check! Thanks for the great comment and question
@@Producelikeapro
And the answer is...?
Any update?
Put that on spotify and I would rock that song on several playlists.
Wow! We will definitely release it!
This one sounds like it has biggest sounstage and sounds very bold and smooth compared to other Audient products. Seems they did a good job with converters and preamps :)
That Smart Gain function is a blessing!
Can you use the inputs on the back for instruments such as guitar and bass?
Okay, Warren, it sounds AWESOME, but please tell what else is happening to get this final result which sounds so loud, 3D and huge? What other processing is going on, busses, Master Bus and Mastering, etc?
Looks great, but I’m already invested in the UAD culture. Is there a way to merge the interface philosophies?
@producelikeapro - i saw another video that said the evo is a touch conservative on the smart gain & levels. did you find that to be true?
Ciao
This is amazing guys! what you do is pure love and for minutes i just forget about the review and EVO16 but it sounds so great...thank you all for making this beautiful song, and my special thanks to Warren as a great mentor to many of us who follow his works, tips and lessons...thank you
Jesus F Christ what a cover! What a voice! Love the Yamaha bass
Thanks ever so much!
Midas Venice F24. FireWire Studio One 5.. factory plugins.. killler mixes...
Audient ID44 or the Evo 16 witch would you recommend. I’m in the market , I have some outboard gear already and a apogee Rosetta for my outboard pre’s and old presonus 8 channel afar mic pre also.
love her voice and your guitar playing wow that was brillent
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it!
I would be all over this if it featured MIDI ports, oh well, I have to choose Focusrite I guess 😭 Nice video!
I've been wondering for days, what are those red monitors? Look like jbl bullet tweeters. 🔥🔥🔥
Sooner than later? ;-)
Everybody is blowing their beans over this thing, I really can't wait to get one in my hands!
Haha thanks for sharing
I think you've just helped me decide on my first ever interface. I don't want to spend too much time doing research and for a drummer just starting to record, this seems perfect. One question. I see it has a USBC or 2.0 Jack on the back. My MAC only has the USB 1.0 built in. Can I use that or is there another way?
So if I get the Evo 16 and SP8.. Does that also mean I can use the 16 outs for say 7.2.4 speaker setup?
I don’t see why not if you can assign them how you want from the mix window
@@Producelikeapro Sweet. And I hear that you can link 2 or 4 mic channels too for us using Sphere or Ambisonic mics. Might have to go read their manual before biting the bullet. Sounds too good to be true!!
I’ve been using a Scarlett 18i20, is there a good enough reason for me to switch to audient evo 16?
how are the Converters / Mic Pres clon this compared to the new Clarrett MK2?
I LOVE them! Download the tracks and hear them, frankly these sound better than what I was using 5-10 years ago that cost 10 times more!
If I shut down the computer and turn it back on the next day, the evo16 is disconnected. Looking at it, the power of the Evo16 is automatically shut down. Does this problem only happen to me?
Can current USB3 be used? Most interfaces are USB2 modern computers are USB c or USB 3`
