I love your channel Matt! The tutorials are fun and easy to follow and your enthusiasm is contagious. I love all the glass pieces you have and the kits you are putting together. One day I hope to have some money to buy a kit. Keep up the great work!
WOW! Antique glass and marbles are my obsession! I've been wanting to get a marble up to melting temp and then flatten into disk, maybe add hole to make into beads and pendants. Ty ty, ty thank u
I have one and it is so much fun. I buy the sheets of glass from Hobby Lobby and cut out shapes, etc. and melt them in my microwave kiln. You can yourself search on you tube how to cut glass and how to use a microwave kiln. That is how I learned. It is extremely easy to use.
I have a microwave kiln like yours and haven't had the nerve to try it. I never thought to use bits of broken bottle glass. Gonna have to try it. That first piece you took out, once smoothed so it's not so sharp, would make such a cool wire wrapped pendant. TFS!
Hey Matt, be careful mixing glasses that have a different Coefficient of Expansion (COE). U might want to do a little research on that. Otherwise the glass has internal stress fractures and are prone to breaking, especially if used in jewelry. Also u definitely want to use a new piece of Kiln paper each time.
Here’s a link to Prince Ruperts Drop which can show how strong glass can be to where a hammer can’t break it, but it can still explode into dust. ruclips.net/video/J7NYMjexVEA/видео.html I tried that crackled marble pin a couple years ago and all the marbles shattered. I’m glad they were in a deep glass of water. But I’d never trust trying it again unless I researched what glass needs to be used. But there’s a few good videos of Ruperts drop that others have posted. Science is pretty awesome!
Thumbed up! Just what I was going to say. :) I have been doing this for years now with 2 microkilns. I love getting beer bottles etc. from friends to smash but I don't mix glass colors anymore. - Heidi
It's great for testing pieces . If you're not sure if it 96 COE or 90 COE , it's best to waste alittle bit of scrap before you make your final piece. You also need fiber paper or kiln wash - or you'll ruin the kiln. The glass will stick forever. For glue , I use Alene's quick grab, E-6000 or the best and cheapest, if you are stacking glass evenly - is cheap hairspray. Use the pump bottle and just dab alittle bit at the edges of the glass . The little kilns are really cool !
How neat is this! I want to play!! Where could I obtain a kiln? Am mostly an acrylic/watercolour, recycled aluminum artist, paint and etch on glass. Thank you!
Hi Mat, I have a large electric kiln for silver jewellery. I have made glass pendants in it and just used white school glue to adhere the glass pieces. Hope that helps.
awww how cute, I have 3 of the "Large" microwave kilns I put "large" in air quotes because it isn't really all that much room inside. and yes, you want a least 1000 watt microwave, the lower wattage microwave will shut itself off once it reaches a certain temp as most have a safety to prevent them from going past a certain temperature (they all do that btw regardless of watts) but I had reached that temp more than once and had to wait to finish a piece as in many occasions it took far longer than five minutes of heating to get things to melt. Sometime in the future i plan to use up my potters plaster to make small molds that will fit perfectly inside the kilns so can melt/fuse and slump and shape glass at will. have fun with it. It's wicked fun to see what you can create. Peace Love and Blessings
Matt, now I will have to do this, and collect even more odd and unusual things. Fortunately, I spent all my available funds on garden supplies, so although cool, I have plenty of other shiny objects to amuse me. Just getting a bit weary with having to amuse me. Oh, well. Stay safe.
I also use stained glass sheets and/or shards. Makes some pretty wicked designs. Make sure glass is same COE though or pieces can also crack or break. Voice of experience here lol. I learned that the hard way.
If you read your microwave book or Google anything about microwaves you'll find out microwaving without a water source in your micro will eventually blow out your microwave. When you cook foods that have moisture in them you don't need to add water. Dry Foods need a little help by adding water. Simply add a glass of water in while you're cooking and that will fix the problem for you. Make sure there's enough water so it doesn't boil away while you're cooking. These look cool. I wonder if you put only round pieces of glass on the outside edges if it would turn out not sharp on the edges.
@@MattsCrazyArt If you use a cup of water please add a wooden site stick or a couple of toothpicks to the cup. These will break the surface tension of the water. Microwaving liquids often leads to them being superheated, which can cause an explosive-like reaction if the surface is disturbed. Think of bursting a bubble - but instead of air, the entire scalding contents of cup flying out in every direction. SAFETY FIRST! Have fun! TFS
Matt, all the glass coming from the same store/bar has nothing to do with the COE. Mixing COEs may be why your edges are so sharp. I haven't fired my kiln in a few years but I don't recall ever having sharp edges on my pieces. But I also never mixed COEs. I always stuck with COE 96.
Hmmm. I have a combination micro/convection counter-top oven. 1000 watts. Not sure I would try this in it, but it looks very interesting. If anyone has the same oven, I'd love to hear if they give this a whirl.
Surprised that you have only just found micro kilns I've had a couple for the last 10 years, you have to make sure you use the same type of glass, and the paper is the same as you would use in a normal kiln
Patricia Dumatrait heck I don’t know, I wonder what the possibilities are? But metal and no moisture are bad. If you get an extra microwave i would use it, not your Food microwave.
The guy in a tutorial I watched makes his own microwave kilns and he said it juat takes more minutes for lower wattage. I think 700 is the lowest they sell. I think his was 900.

It will. Marbles just flatten if you don't leave them in too long.
I'll try adding a cup of water but I'm not sure if that will mess with the process

I have one.
Our local glass guild just uses pva school glue.
I listened again to the tutorial and heard you say microwave kiln. Thanks
Very cool. What is that container called?
A microwave kiln
this is great years ago i found a bag of odd shaped murano glass pieces in all colors now i know what to do with them
