I waited and waited for the 13' with touch bar man. I had $1500 saved and ready to go for it the day it came out. I was so shocked that they priced it at $1799 at the event. I went out the next day and bought a nearly maxed out XPS 15 and am happy with it.
Kanwar Anand no one touch types with function keys. They always require some level of "looking" and their function changes between apps. If your always going to look at function keys I think the touch bar actually makes sense. It doesn't really change the usage pattern from standard function keys.
Many users report that after 2 weeks of usage, they stop looking away and intuitively touch the right buttons. His review is a bit short sighted in that regard.
Thanks Man... You are Awesome................. Thanks a lot. I have been looking for this wallpaper but I can't find it on internet. Lastly you make it possible thanks again.
I mean USB A is shit but for some reason we are still using it bc old pc don’t habe Type C yet. In a few years when pcs with usb c are considered old usb a will be dead
@@helmi5045 yeah. I agree. I hate blindly plugging a USB-A because it's like 50-50 chance so I'll take my chance 😂 hopefully USB-C 4.0 will be the standard
@@samb2166 yeah I plug in my keyboard - doesn’t work wrong way. I plug it in again different- still doesn’t work. Like I always have to look at the port to get it in
These SSDs are really fast though. It’s done to make the machines weigh less and be more portable. These 2016/2017 weigh just a little more than a 2015 13”. As always backing up is a must. Time machine at least and keeping sensitive stuff on external drives apart from a time machine backup.
root I agree but people buy these because they want macOS. The build quality is really impeccable. There are other well made notebooks out there but not really any cheaper. When they are cheaper, you’re getting less somewhere. Either the CPU, the ram, the SSD size, the display. Scaling in Windows just isn’t as good as the Apple solution. That’s probably due to having to support a shitload of different displays but it’s still a problem. The trackpad is also the best in the business with all of the gestures and force touch. It would be cool if they add support for the pencil in the future. This would definitely be a welcome feature. I have a 15” and that’s what I base my opinion on. I honestly wouldn’t buy a 13” MBP. For $2000 and over you really should have a quad core i7 and a dGPU. I would never pay for the 2TB SSD either. You’ll never get back that premium when you sell it.
I kind of feel that you put "Disappointed" to the title just to attract more views. Basically your review can be summarised as "I really like it, other than that it is too expensive."
But he doesn't really like it, he had many complaints about it however he said that it's still a solid laptop. The fact that there are laptops $1000+ cheaper and still better is ridiculous, I think that's what he's getting at.
A fully speced out MacBook Pro in the UK costs over £ 3300. And it is a more expensive currency than any dollar. How does he say a top spec only costs 3000 dollars? Help me
i gotta say one thing...this guy is the best reveiwer who has the magic to cover all parts and put under a 10 min video other youtubers struggle to say all things in short times. his scripting is dope👍
No you won't be good in a year. Stop saying that... You can already buy everything with USB C, but you won't be compatible with the world. In a year most people will still have USB A flash drives and external harddrives. In a year everyone and their mother will still use SD cards. These things won't just go away, sorry. Implementing USB C is a good thing, that's not the issue... The problem is removing everything else. In a transitional period you give BOTH OPTIONS. It's as simple as that. And the keyboard has less travel than tablet keyboards? Wh00t?
Completely agree with your statement. At least leave 1x USB 3.0 and the SD slot. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever to remove everything for 4x USB-C. After 10 years of Mac, I've switched to Microsoft and I'm very impressed so far. Much better than the Windows I remember from 10 year ago.
It is crazy to go over thinness of a build and/or future readying of devices when it comes at the cost of convenience to consumers. The people who are buying a device that costs a shit ton to use TODAY. Also, for these macs specifically, the touchbar doesn't seem to add as much to any workflow as it takes away from them. I never look at my laptop keyboard, thanks to muscle memory, and also thanks to the static nature of the I/O. If the I/O keeps changing, i'll never be able to concentrate on my workflow and i'll start looking for things to work and make sense, thereby wasting time.
agree, I'll let people leave with dongles and buy all their accessories over again. I'll stick with computer that have type A and only buy those with both type A and C. We'll see in January 2018 if everything has moved to type C. I highly doubt that even most things have by then....
I'm someone who floats between different brands and different platforms. There is no denying that Apple make great looking products. The problem is that the premium they charge for those products just isn't worth it. The new Mac Book Pro is seriously underpowered. Dell's XPS range was released earlier and has the seventh generation of Intel CPUs in it and Microsoft are offering creatives more. Seriously, why did they think a touch bar would be desired when laptops such as the Surface Pro range are offering High res touchscreens?
In some areas yes and others no. I'd never even think of making a gtx 1080 hackintosh with steam, but I love my mac for programming and for work (when it's not Photoshop or Premiere atleast).
I got the 13''. For me, I bought a new one off ebay. A friend bought a refurbished one off apple and it had a new battery. I'm not sure what else was refurbished about it. It had the latest software and it looked nice.
Juan Manuel Gómez Ramos hmm, I was in the same predicament but thought the 15" would have better lower for the video/photo editing I do. Personally I think the touch bar isn't all that useful, so you'd be paying $100 for less weight and less ports. If you are fine without ports id go with 2016 for just an extra 100
See, I just have one problem with Apple's "aggressive" approach. Yes, time moves on and we need changes, and those industry leaders are the ones that need to make that change happen. However, there are different ways to be "aggressive" and implement changes. We didn't switch from steam engine to electricity in one day. Take the new Macbook as an example: Why don't they keep two old USB ports while changing the other two as USB-C, and use a USB-C charger? People will be able to use those USB-C ports and buy USB-C products, thus getting transitioned into the new tech, and at the same time, still able to use their old tech for a while. Yes, old USB ports will keep the laptop a bit thicker, but is thinness really that important? After a smooth transition year, Apple can just take the all USB-C approach the next year. Same thing for iPhone 7. They could totally have kept the headphone jack, but put a pair of wireless earbuds in the package. User will get used to Wireless earphone, and then the next year they can get rid of the jack. Change isn't a bad thing, and we always need them. But just like other things, when we run too fast we stumble. What Apple is doing right now isn't for the good of change, but more for the "we are innovating something" marketing strategy. Getting rid of "old-fashioned" ports, getting "thinner", all sounds cool but not really useful in actual usage. Afterall, we(at least most of us) buy tech to use as a tool, not as living room decorations.
that type of thinking will do you very well in a school product fair, but in the real world its all about squeezing the very last bit of juice out of consumers
Leo Chan I know. I'm not saying that it's a bad market strategy. It probably is the best strat that Apple have right now. What I wrote up there was from a perspective of purely inspecting the products themselves, and I think it's a larger problem than "we'll get used to it in a year".
Zihan Shu think of apple as a perfectionist or an artist who has its own way of doing things. From an engineering pov, they are not going to compromise usability (still usable, u just have to pay) in the expense of beauty or technological advance.
Leo Chan Apple is that way. But it's not exactly the same way that they used to be like. They've always been this artistic and perfectionist company, but they used to be able to do good marketing and make easy-to-use products at the same time. Now, they are really just good at marketing. I'm not really criticizing them, to be very clear. I'm just sad to see a company that used to be proud of product usability and efficiency turning into a company that rely on marketing.
On one hand Apple has to deal with people saying they lack innovative products year after year, but people fail to realise its the old ports and slow data transfers thats been stopping us from moving forward. I see your argument of having a smooth transition with multiple ports, but the amount of time, money and engineering that goes into these designs are humongous. They cant afford subtle changes and having to update the assembly line every year and then. So once they have the technology and the vision, its a no brainer to go all in. Now i have never been a apple user due to compatibility for what i do for a living but its difficult to not appreciate what apple is doing to the industry
I don't like the way Apple approaching this "transition" Rather than getting rid of all ports and putting in only USB-C ports, they should start adding USB-C ports in their products _along__ with other ports
You know we talk about Apple? The Company which, since Jobs passed away, molks out EVERY cent of all their products, while going stupidly thin and killing battery life. Man, i would rather go with 3mm more at an increased batterylife and cooling solution.
Hey Dave. Love your "clean and minimal" reviews. Thanks You used to post a link for the current wallpaper you have on the video. Pleas continue doing so, you always use beautiful wallpapers.
Are you kidding?! For professional users USB will remain the standard for next 10 years! All my lab equipment, JTAG, oscilloscope, power supply dataloggers, logic analysers $$$$ thousands worth of equipment that still use USB and will do so for a long time... problem for professionals is that lots on my equipment doesn't work through USB HUBs so this machine is useless !!! I really wanted to upgrade my 2012 MacBook Pro but now I need to get the previous model ?!
Thanks for this very clear cut and honest review. I've been struggling to figure out whether to buy the new 2016 Macbook Pro fully loaded with the Radeon 460 or get last year's 2015 Macbook Pro with the dedicated GPU. After weeks of back and forth and finally watching your video, I decided to go with the 2015 model. It retains all the ports needed for my photography and video editing needs, SD card slot, slightly larger battery and the keyboard I've been accustomed to. Still not a fan of the new keyboard despite spending nearly an hour at the Apple store testing it out. Since you edit with Adobe Premiere, are there any other laptops you would recommend (that have a 15 inch screen and build quality similar to the 2015 Macbook Pro) but optimized to run Premiere? Keep up the great videos, thanks!
While review is good, I kinda disagree with USB type C point of view. From my past experience, older (USB3.0, etc) technology is replaced by newer (USB type c) one when product makers (say accessory makers) start to make significantly better product with new one and consumer preferred that. Then no one uses older technology and becomes obsolete. I think computer maker job is to make old and new technology available so consumer can enjoy all options until CONSUMER decides to fade out older technology. Apple failed horribly this time. For example, tape was replaced by CD because CD provided much better sound and convenience factor for consumers. Sony (just an example company) always made their stereo player that could play both tape and CD. It's not Sony's stereo player which forced music company to make CD; it is music company stopped making tapes which forced Sony to drop tape. It's not the best analogy but just illustrating logic and it's just my opinion
But, to the point you make about let the market kill it, if they didn't use it who else would? would the market really kill it or become complacent with what they use now due to there being no major demand for usb-c?
2018...we still use the ports. Love you Dave and your videos, and I think eventually USB C will phase everything out, but a year is simply not enough time.
Am sure your 2009 MBP can support up to 16GB RAM and a 2TB SATA SSD that can do 550MB/s. just stick with that imo. The new MBPs have everything soldered: RAM, SSD, CPU....
xAA7 Don't get a Mac. As long as you don't click every "YOU'RE THE 1 000 000th VISITOR! CLICK HERE TO CLAIM YOUR PRIZE!" any laptop can last you for years.
That because FCP is a lighter software with less thorough optimization of the end product i.e. the video itself, premiere is the best there is because they cut far fewer corners.
***** I use the Macbook mainly for school and Logic X Pro. It does the job really well. Many of my friends that switch from Apple products regret it. Even if they buy other premium laptops or phones. Too many issues and not as great support.
Watch MKBHD's and Jonathan Morrison's video reviews as well. All three, Dave included, have pretty differing opinions so it's nice to see all the points of view. For example, Dave is the ONLY reviewer I have found so far that thinks the speakers are worse (and it's his opinion so that's fine if he thinks so.) All the other reviewers though think the speakers are FAR better on the new MBP.
Hey Dave, thanks for being so unbiased and honest with this review, and all your other tech reviews. It's good to know that there are those of you out there that create entertaining content that is so well put together, all the while keeping us informed about the tech we may end up purchasing, in part due to your insight.
+raheemdot I finally found it...but it costs $12.00 -_- www.istockphoto.com/vector/quarz-iceberg-serenity-lowpoly-dream-gm513391604-87580917?st=_p_iceberg
The fact that you tear these down and use internal shots for your videos is amazing, it's one of the reasons you're the best laptop reviewer out right now.
If you believe a year from now USB-C will be the standard you are very much mistaken. Remember this: USB-C will not be the standard for at least 3-4 years. Every third party item uses USB, the populate world will not go out and purchase all new USC-C devices in A YEAR. Even when CDs were introduced tapes were still in play for YEARS - years. Apple got this 100% wrong.
Perfect review. It is a great laptop but is absolutely over priced. The base model starts at $3699 AUD in Australia. I can get a Razer Blade 14 starting at $2599 or a Dell XPS at $2399 AUD (which I did).
Limekys hes so selfish...on his razer blade video he said he'll post soon but he never did...that was on his description. ..all his video he writes the wallpaper. ..but this video he didnt mention...selfish guy
I partially agree with you on the need for everything to switch to USB-C, but the SD card slot is the one port they should've kept. You'll always need a dongle for a SIM card, which virtually all creative professionals use and isn't going away anytime soon.
I personally can’t see USB C fully replacing USB A, especially as PCs even today generally have at most 1 USB C port And I suspect it’s because of the bandwidth that USB C requires
if they won't change this keyboard - Macbook Pro 15" 2015 will be (sadly) my last Macbook... after that, I'II go for Dell XPS or Razer... but I love MacOS! It's like Apple forcing me to go for Hackintosh! :-/
i feel the same way, I have been a Mac user since OS 9 but these things are too expensive for me to justify. The low-end model is anemic in terms of storage and ram. My 2012 Macbook Pro is starting to show it's age but my next purchase will probably be a Razer Blade Stealth, talk about bang for your buck
no accessory maker will move on to USB-C because its on Apple laptops, Apple already has like 15% of market share, so USB-C only macs are even less than 1%. The only thing that will happen is that macbook users will suffer from using and paying for dongles
If you're talking about desktop market share, MacBooks have about 7% of the market share. Windows rule with 90%. Actually some Windows PC makers are also going towards USB C like Dell. Obviously they have legacy ports but they are heading in that direction.
yes, all the whiile Dell users have the option to choose which ports to use, MBP '16 adapters have to suffer the high price and then paying for dongles, and then the annoyance of using those dongles.
Yes, the market will eventually move to the new standards, but now isn't really the time to remove legacy ports only to force people to buy dongles, especially on a "Pro" ultrabook. If this were a regular consumer laptop designed for internet browsing, word processing, and light gaming I think there would have been less complaints. There would be grumbling about having to buy an dongle, but probably not outright complaints. This, on the other hand, is a "Pro" labeled device that is most likely aimed at professional users. That means people are going to be actually using legacy ports because their multi hundred to thousand dollar devices, like cameras, can't be easily replaced. Yes, lets phase out old standards, but not on "Pro" devices until the standards aren't needed any more.
I agree exactly thats just their excuse to screw their customers over. Just like the i phone they say the future is blue tooth lets get rid of the head phone jack on the other hand on the new MacBook pro they keep the head phone jack now you need a dongle to charge or back up your phone this is basic stuff if USB-C is the future why didn't they make their i phone 7 chargers USB-C the dots just don't connect.
if there isn't a big company like apple that is aggressively choking off legacy ports, no one will, and then no one will adapt. USB-C is an objectively better port, but it wont be useful unless things are made that use it.
I like how you were honest. Nowadays with companies sending people free stuff the reviews tend to just be bubble gum reviews but your review was honest and that's something I don't see on here. SUBSCRIBED!
Awesome video Dave, as always! And I really love, that you're the first ever youtuber, that get's the point of Apple's chosen Ports, it's for the future. Thank you for this awesome content! One more question, please, share the link of this awesome wallpaper!
Feldenkrais with Alfons au bout de 30 mois t'auras payer en première ce que tu payeras en une fois chez final cut réfléchi un peu et vois qui est le moins chère au bout de 5 ans ( its french for thé translation)
Marcos, I saw another user say that he wouldn't use a Surface Book even though it does EVERYTHING he wanted EXCEPT Final Cut Pro, and that is what locked him into Apple.... Ejem... that is just silly.
Great review. I saw you're checking the thud rumble mixer. I wonder if you're turntblist? Btw you have amazing channel!!! Thank You for the videos. Although I'm a mac user, I use only adobe and started thinking for some other options (besides apple). I learned a lot of things watching some of your videos.
The way you deliver the message and get to the point is greatly awesome, you will hit millions of subs sooner than you will think. Just keep it that way.
10 years ago people said SSD would take over the market by storm! till this day HDDare not obsolet and higher storage SSDs are still too expensive.. what makes you think that the USB C will kill all other ports in 2 or 3 years? i mean, some devises still use usb 2.0 and that was like 15 years ago. My point is, having only USB C ports takes away the practicality the macbook pro once had.
L HK oh no doubt it's over priced I was talking to the other guy. I wouldn't buy the 15inch to be honest as I have a gaming desktop and I only need the 13 to get my professional work done on the go. It is over priced but there's reasons for that and if will get cheaper over time.
Suicide Gaming I don't think the price of this Laptop will ever drop unless a new model came out. I'm disappointed by Apple. They don't know what they are doing. They have given up to be innovative. When the Retina MBP first came out it is a killer. This Macbook is like that guy who wear everything from Nike in a gym but can't lift shit. I don't care if it has a nVidia GTX 1080 or whatever in it. I'm just upset by the price. If it is a $2000 laptop it will be much better. For $4300 I can buy a fucking Mac Pro
Why does every single Macbook Pro review compares it to a consumer grade PC laptop? Since Apple insists on the "Pro" on their think laptop, why don't we compare it to the "Pro" laptop on the PC side? Thinkpad P50 P70, Dell Precision laptops, HP Elitebook and Zbook are the bosses. These laptops are offered with Xeon CPUs, Quadro or Firepro GPUs which is the pro version of dedicated GPU from Nvidia and AMD, 64gb of ECC Ram, Raid NVMe slots (for super fast ssd like the Samsung 850 Pro) and regular 2.5" drive for sick amount of storage + file redundancy, 4k display on 15 inch..... The list goes on. If the Macbook with its lame specs is called Pro, I wonder what should we call these Thinkpad, Precision, Elitebook...etc..? God?
Very happy with my new 15.6" Metabox/Clevo P650RP that has twice the ram, a GTX1060, and 512GB and 1TB SSD's. All that for a whopping AUD$3,000 less than what I would have paid on a new upgraded MacBook Pro which would still have been lower specced than my Metabox.
Thinner, lighter, has better design, higher resale value, longer battery life and running MacOS which is better optimised than Windows. Also Macbook Pro is not even for gaming.
Great review, very honest... I switched back to Windows as I'm a PS user and didn't want to pay $3000+ for a 16GB laptop... and still wanted an SD card. I'm finding the switch back to Windows10 quite refreshing, if Im honest... don't regret my decision one bit...
There are some nice things about this new MacBook Pro. But dropping all USB-A ports, which is a standard that I can guarantee will be in widespread use for *more than three* years to come, is not worth a thinner profile. Even Apple's current 5K iMac cannot make use of USB-C devices, and people don't generally upgrade their iMacs every year.
I'm a Music Producer and for the past couple of years I've invested heavily in a Thunderbolt based Studio set-up (Audio interface, SSD Hard Drives, external processor)... Now they're telling me they're ditching Thunderbolt for USB-C? After 5 years?
I don't understand people who buy an apple, and then use adobe premier. That's the equivalent of chopping a tree down with an ax when there is a chainsaw right next to you. If you don't know or don't want to learn FCP, then just get a windows pc.
Son_0f_Ares agreed. Even if the interface is worse in your opinion the amount of time you save due to the ridiculously fast performance adds up to like two or three extra weekends of time per year. Premiere is so slow. Coming from an nvidia card owner.
It's about preference when it comes to FCP and Adobe Premier. Do you want to work as Apple thinks you should work or would you like to customize how everything will work around you? That's pretty much it.
If all the comments on the internet are to be believed, Apple might as well call the next Macbook Pro the "Final Cut Pro book". Seriously, do people really think that's all it good for? You might buy a Mac because you like the design, you like macOS, you are just a fanboy, you don't like Windows, you are a swift developer, god forbid you actually prefer Pemiere over Final cut pro,...
Korax but if you really want to use adobe premier why not just go buy a surface book, its about the same price and performance except premier likes Nvidia. I'm just saying that FCP is really well optimized for Mac and itd be a shame if you bought a mac for video editing but aren't using FCP
Everybody is talking about the build quality of the Macbooks. The outside of Macbooks looks friggin' great! Because as most people don't know... Apple's products are fashion accessories with an added ability to act like Smartphones, computers, etc. Have you ever seen an inside of a Macbook? Clean, great looking too! However pay close attention to the layout of the board, the routing of cables, the components on the motherboard (not just the main ones like CPU, GPU and Chipset. All of them). You will notice that many of the components are completely unnecessary, it feels like they are doubled or something. Added redundancy right? Nope! They are mostly in series of the wires. It takes 1 of the components to die off and the entire connection on the board is dead. It might be a keyboard key, a sensor. It might be something completely harmless. One of those sensors dies off (there are around 7 of them) and the whole f*cking motherboard needs to be replaced, because the Macbook sees a problem and will not start up, it will become unusable and then you will realize what kind of a trash the thing is. What the hell? And Apple's fans are so proud of Apple being ecological because they put up a video of recycling around 5 parts from old iPhones! The screen? It is holded by aluminum hinges, sometimes they even use screws to hold the display! But guess what? Those hinges break because they use improper screws to hold the display! Let's say the hinge is 4 mm wide and 2 mm thick, which is already really thin (lenght can be as long as it needs to be to hold the display). But now engineers get the idea to put a 2.5 mm screw in the damn thing! Now on one side of the screw it it 0.5 mm wide and on the other just 1 mm. Extremely durable don't you think? A macbook cannot survive a fall from a table. A Lenovo Thinkpad can survive a fall from a ladder. Louis Rossmann explains it really well on his RUclips channel. Go watch him. Buy a proper products, not the crap that Apple gives you. In short, build quality is great only from the aesthetic perspective. From an engineering perspective, it is completely utterly horrible.
And it is not like they can pull the whole "it is too big of a port" like other ports... an SD card Port is thin... this exclusion was purely money grabbing.
I think this is a very fair review. Your final point on price is persuasive: my guess is that OLED screen is a part of it, it's definitely not off the shelf. It's a new gen device, though, right? The Macbook Air started around $3000+ with an SSD. BTW, something I'm dying to know: what is that big monitor you're using?
This is the first time I've watched this guy's videos and I can safely say they are the least aggressive, most professional and his voice is incredibly soft.... It's easy watching.
Still don't understand why they don't use Nvidia chips tbh. Like I know they have partnered with AMD before, but the new Nvidia chips are super efficient and powerful and when your spending $3100 or whatever on a premium product you want premium hardware
The lowest power 10 series Nvidia GPUs (1050) won't show up on laptops until early 2017 and even then, it has a TDP of 50 watts and Apple apparently didn't want anything over 35W.
Viet Tran HoveringAboveMyself Still though I feel as though final cut could be optimized for Nvidia cards, and a single 1050 can still output a single 8k display. Power consumption kind of makes sense, but just put a larger battery in the device and keep it the same thickness as last year. Idk, feel as though these are all solvable problems without using an underpowered GPU
Peter Strobl From Arstechnica: "Power consumption aside-the laptop version of the GTX 1060, Nvidia’s slowest Pascal-based laptop chip, has an 85W TDP where the MacBook Pro’s AMD GPUs are all 35W-Nvidia’s cards support a maximum of four displays. And while Nvidia’s GPUs support DisplayPort 1.3, the Thunderbolt 3 controller and most monitors only support 1.2."
Most of the people who criticize Windows OS probably haven't used a windows laptop since Windows 2000. I recently switched from an Apple MacBook Air ($900) to a Dell i7559 ($700) and both the OS and performance are so much better. If you tried windows, you would never go back to Apple
Here's how I rate Windows since 95. 95:So, So bad. (Probably because I started at 98) 98: Good 2000;Me: Never tried them XP: Good Vista: Garbage 7: Amazing 8:Just Kill Me 10: I love it. Right now I'm rollin' with my Samsung Notebook 7 Spin. Not the greatest, but I love it.
Cole Christie I have been using top end desktop windows machines for 10+ years yet the 2016 mbp feels way more fluid and reliable in day-to-day use. I rarely if ever had any trouble with windows 7 as the stability was phenomenal but win10 is real pain to use. My SSD's, ram and CPU are fine and stable and all drivers including bios are up-to-date yet I get gpu driver crashes, I can't search for local items on desktop/anywhere, launching (full screen) directx/opengl applications often halt the OS for no reason so a reset/restart is required, skype has huge connectivity issues, upnp and printer services are unstable and application thumbnails appear and dissapear at random. Third re-install. No problems with win7 VM / dual boot. Even windows 8 & 8.1 worked better for me. TL;DR I am definitely going "back" to mac after trying windows (10) for 12+ months.
Joshua D. That's weird. Since it's an OEM laptop it could be because it has a relatively new chipset and/or "windows approved" configuration of parts that get priority and quality driver updates when things change.
Totally loving your review! I have used Apple products for a long time now (8 years), and have owned 3 Macbook Pro`s, Iphone 4, 4s, 5s, 6 and now currently on the iPhone SE (because of size) Have also owned Apple tv`s, airport express and so on. I love the Apple eco-system, the feeling it gives me to use it, and the ease of setting up. (It just works!) But with the prices apple now are taking i will be switching over to a new microsoft laptop of some kind when my Macbook pro gets to slow. When buying into the eco-system i always accepted that the prices was high, but now they take it to the next level, and the feathures dont match those prices. ("It's all 'bout the money, It's all 'bout the dum dum.......") .... A book about Apple with some pictures = 300 dollars anyone...?? Some thoughts about the 2016 macbook: 1. The price... Just insane, when you can get a Dell XPS, Razer or any company gets you waaay more than Apple :( 2. The dongle shait! It is not in any way good solutions with the dongle situation. If i were to charge my iPhone.. Well it won`t work without a dongle.. Connect my samsung smart-tv to it? Well not without buying a dongle. At least they should add the HDMI and USB dongle in the box... (of course i know WHY they dont) Macbook is no longer a PRO machine, just extra premium super duper priced machines and not mutch more. I could say a lot more, you all get the picture. Apple has gotten to gready, and it pisses me off. Just look at Black friday... Giftcards from them,(that has to be used in their stores) not any disount on the new computers, watches and so on. (at least not in Norway where i live) Think something has to change at Apple, like dropping prices or something! Just my thoughts. :) PS: Sorry for my English.
I’m still using mine 7 years later and it’s working pretty great for streaming and editing. I even use the webcam for streaming and get compliments on my camera. 🤷🏻♂️
I wanted to love this Macbook so badly. A part of me wants to switch over to Final Cut just for this laptop. Uggggggh.
Dave Lee Honesty is the best policy. Thanks for keeping it that way!
Dave Lee can u please do surface book with performance base
Gold Solitude bro that's so subjective and can be used for everything.
do great videos again and again.
I believe Dimitri (HardwareCanucks) switched over to Final Cut pro. He was blown away by how quick it is.
I waited and waited for the 13' with touch bar man. I had $1500 saved and ready to go for it the day it came out. I was so shocked that they priced it at $1799 at the event. I went out the next day and bought a nearly maxed out XPS 15 and am happy with it.
no one cares that your poor
Protoss Zerg he just bought an XPS 15 he ain't poor
+Protoss Zerg the only people who say this shit are either poor themselves or they've got daddy's money
I have a Alienware 17 R3. Why buy a mac for that much with barebone specs? XPS was a better choice.
I too had saved up for this MacBook Pro, and after the price bump I bought the top end, non-custom 13 inch because I needed the Mac

meanwhile in 2020
In 2020 I really don't miss USB Type A
In 2020 and can't remember the last time I used USB-A... but that's just me.
The point about having to look away from the screen makes so much sense. No other reviewer said that.
Lol I always thought of that point, yet nobody else mentioned it other than Dave. Dave is the best
Kanwar Anand no one touch types with function keys. They always require some level of "looking" and their function changes between apps. If your always going to look at function keys I think the touch bar actually makes sense. It doesn't really change the usage pattern from standard function keys.
SuperALBSURE you mean touch type as in typing on the screen? I use the function keys based on muscle memory, which can't be done on a touch bar really
Many users report that after 2 weeks of usage, they stop looking away and intuitively touch the right buttons. His review is a bit short sighted in that regard.
+HTP proof?
i dont know why but i liked dave's review best out of all the reviewers out there
Terence I think it's his lack of zealotry.
cool & still straight to the point. that must be why.
Because he's one of the most fair, comprehensive and unbiased reviewers on RUclips. Mentions both the good and bad.
DeFy Noah
yes totally, and he's one of the very few I could hit the thumbs up button when the video starts
He had a call voice not rushing me to
What a great review. Clean, detailed, honest. Got a sub from me.
...according to long time watchers you link the wallpapers? Keep doing it please.

"In 2018, people will not care about the old-school USB port"
hmmmmm.........
Some don't, and those are the people that purchase the MacBooks, or you can always just buy a usb c hub obviously.
it's 2021 and USB-A is still KING LOL
I mean USB A is shit but for some reason we are still using it bc old pc don’t habe Type C yet. In a few years when pcs with usb c are considered old usb a will be dead
@@helmi5045 yeah. I agree. I hate blindly plugging a USB-A because it's like 50-50 chance so I'll take my chance 😂 hopefully USB-C 4.0 will be the standard
@@samb2166 yeah I plug in my keyboard - doesn’t work wrong way. I plug it in again different- still doesn’t work. Like I always have to look at the port to get it in
Still the best. No, I'm not talking about the MacBook Pro, I'm talking about Dave Lee, my favorite tech youtuber.
Gerard Waworundeng only guy out there that gives mkd a run for his money. Lisa at mobiletechreview is up there too imo.
The hard drives soldered on is the worst idea... once the logic board dies so does all your data
I agree, but you should really keep backups of your data and use version control.
I'm just here to squad up in the comics
There’s a failsafe data extraction port on the logic board. Now, that it on the 2016 version, but they removed it from the 2018 models 😂😂
I kind of feel that you put "Disappointed" to the title just to attract more views. Basically your review can be summarised as "I really like it, other than that it is too expensive."
Jeong-hun Sin it's working ur watching it
But he doesn't really like it, he had many complaints about it however he said that it's still a solid laptop. The fact that there are laptops $1000+ cheaper and still better is ridiculous, I think that's what he's getting at.
And that's why he is "Disappointed"... Also, an apple logo must be made out of diamond or something....
I think it is polished with diamonds...
Disappointed totally summarizes my feeling toward the MacBook Pros. Great title.
apple should have put damn usb-c in the iPhone 7
they dont own usb-c, so they wont.
Lucas Magno heyyoooooo, exactly right
gotta make that money off lightning port eh?
Apple: where we use thin as an excuse for making it expensive*
*we also want to get every cent we can from other manufacturers.
usb-c is free to use. You have to pay intel something like $30 per thunderbolt port.
The fastest, lightest, thinnest web browser ever made. Only $3000.
lol
A fully speced out MacBook Pro in the UK costs over £ 3300. And it is a more expensive currency than any dollar. How does he say a top spec only costs 3000 dollars? Help me

joe john Here in the continental Europe it costs €4.999. 😖
My Car was cheaper than this Macbook.

i gotta say one thing...this guy is the best reveiwer who has the magic to cover all parts and put under a 10 min video
other youtubers struggle to say all things in short times.
his scripting is dope👍
Much better than the Windows I remember from 10 year ago.
clouds5 exactly and I hope he sees this. For someone smart like him that was a stupid statement that doesnt stick
I agree than Type A is going to be used less and less but SD Card removal is just stupid specially in a pro laptop.
This is one of the best reviews for the macbook pro I have ever seen. Talk about level-headed. Thumbs up.
So glad I got a 2015 refurbished
Toast 13" or 15"?
baroquefish 13
Same but got the 15" don't feel like i'm missing out on anything
2015 model is the best bang for the buck. These are disgustingly overpriced.
Here it is just 300€ cheaper... gonna go with the 2016
Apple's new slogan: "You'll learn to like it kind of."
In some areas yes and others no. I'd never even think of making a gtx 1080 hackintosh with steam, but I love my mac for programming and for work (when it's not Photoshop or Premiere atleast).
@@zorqvin The real "mindless drones" are the idiots that are stuck in the past, hating on Apple for no good reason.
Of course you'd be disappointed. *TO ANYONE BUYING A MACBOOK PRO:* Save yo soul and buy a refurbished macbook pro from last year (aka the 2015 model)
That's what I just bought... I love it.
Leona Brawne did you get 13" or 15"? Also what do they do to make it 'refurbished'? (New battery? Etc)
I got the 13''. For me, I bought a new one off ebay. A friend bought a refurbished one off apple and it had a new battery. I'm not sure what else was refurbished about it. It had the latest software and it looked nice.
I'm between getting a refurbished 2015 13" or a 2016 13" without touchar. Equivalently spected, they have a $100 difference 🤔 thoughts?
Hi I am from 2018, and we still use USB type a port!
It's used even in 2020...!
Still the same thing in 2021!
still the same in 2038
Same in 2022!
Same in 2023
Nyan cat is what makes it worth it
I don't like the way Apple approaching this "transition"
Rather than getting rid of all ports and putting in only USB-C ports, they should start adding USB-C ports in their products _along__ with other ports
javo bean But then there's no incentive to switch to that
javo bean no incentive for companies to make usbc products then if they regular usb ones still work
Like 4 USB C ports and 1 USB A.
They should include all the adapters. I enjoy my Apple Products, but this is just stupid.
especially at a price point like this one
Retnuh1974 i know right, so stupid 🙄
You know we talk about Apple? The Company which, since Jobs passed away, molks out EVERY cent of all their products, while going stupidly thin and killing battery life.
Man, i would rather go with 3mm more at an increased batterylife and cooling solution.
Hey Dave. Love your "clean and minimal" reviews. Thanks
You used to post a link for the current wallpaper you have on the video.
@@wapuh6371 for real 😂
Keep up the great videos, thanks!
effspot Any Windows laptop that has Nvidia cards will run Premiere much better. I'd say the best options are the XPS 15 and the 14" Razer Blade
Old comment but im still commenting lol. Razer blade 14?
never did I imagine one of my favorite youtubers asking another fav youtuber questions in the comment sections dang.
Good point!
But, to the point you make about let the market kill it, if they didn't use it who else would? would the market really kill it or become complacent with what they use now due to there being no major demand for usb-c?
Nice review, but over 50 minutes to encode a 4k 6-minute file whoa so sloooooooooooow.
TechTablets.com Ayy you're here.
every cool guys i watch on youtube follow each other as well :D
i know i took me over an hour to encode a 4k 13 minute file but thats why i bought the imac pro for better results you should consider it
try encoding a 3 minutes 1080p file on my laptop. Yup, half an hour
That's because Dave uses Adobe and not final cut pro.
2018...we still use the ports. Love you Dave and your videos, and I think eventually USB C will phase everything out, but a year is simply not enough time.
2018....I still care about regular usb port
I don't know why you would, when you have a much better options. Of course you can still buy a USB hub.

I'm still using my 2009 Macbook Pro with a CD Drive haha. Want another Macbook because of their durability but these videos make me skeptical.

Wow

Yes, I already knew it and found the link :(
I partially agree with you on the need for everything to switch to USB-C, but the SD card slot is the one port they should've kept. You'll always need a dongle for a SIM card, which virtually all creative professionals use and isn't going away anytime soon.
I personally can’t see USB C fully replacing USB A, especially as PCs even today generally have at most 1 USB C port
And I suspect it’s because of the bandwidth that USB C requires
Had to go back here after watching Dave's 2021 16 inch Macbook Pro M1 Max impressions video

if they won't change this keyboard - Macbook Pro 15" 2015 will be (sadly) my last Macbook... after that, I'II go for Dell XPS or Razer... but I love MacOS!
I recommend going with Razer, you certainly won't be disappointed after using apple products for so long.

bulbadox ure wrong. xps is one of the best looking windows laptops out there. infinity display , carbon fibre and aluminum is the selling point.
they have equal specs but the mac is more expensive..
bulbadox you buy hardware for looks?
no accessory maker will move on to USB-C because its on Apple laptops, Apple already has like 15% of market share, so USB-C only macs are even less than 1%.
SUBSCRIBED!

One more question, please, share the link of this awesome wallpaper!
who uses premiere over final?
+Keybraker about 60% of editors. 20-30% use final cut
Heh, I thought it was the other way around as well. Especially if you're editing on a Mac, Final Cut was just a given...
Final Cut costs $300 total, Adobe Premiere $20 per month. Seems like Apple users either have tons of money by default, or they use pirated copies?
Feldenkrais with Alfons au bout de 30 mois t'auras payer en première ce que tu payeras en une fois chez final cut réfléchi un peu et vois qui est le moins chère au bout de 5 ans ( its french for thé translation)
Marcos, I saw another user say that he wouldn't use a Surface Book even though it does EVERYTHING he wanted EXCEPT Final Cut Pro, and that is what locked him into Apple.... Ejem... that is just silly.
I do not think USB 3 will be replaced anytime soon. I like to be wrong though.

2018 and usb c still isn't as close to being a big deal as you thought
The way you deliver the message and get to the point is greatly awesome, you will hit millions of subs sooner than you will think. Just keep it that way.
10 years ago people said SSD would take over the market by storm! till this day HDDare not obsolet and higher storage SSDs are still too expensive.. what makes you think that the USB C will kill all other ports in 2 or 3 years? i mean, some devises still use usb 2.0 and that was like 15 years ago. My point is, having only USB C ports takes away the practicality the macbook pro once had.
It's become pretty obvious that Apple doesn't care about being practical, just like the headphone jack at the iPhone 7.
Apple tend to cross the line by thinking what the customers "should" want instead of giving what the customers "actually" need.
Apple cares abkut Profit-marginess for obsessed stock holders
Usb-c has so much functionality one of the best is using a thunderbolt port for an external graphics card one day usb-c will be the ruler
rickyricardo2006 SSDs haven't taken over, but they're popular, now.
The new MacBooks are garbage and this is coming from a non-Apple hater
The new Macbook is overpriced as fuck and this is coming from an Apple fan
gothops154 no it isn't.
Suicide Gaming You have to agree. For $4300 this is *cough* garbage. If it is a $2000 laptop than this will be a killer laptop.
I appreciate your knowledge. Great video Dave!
WORST MACBOOK ERA 2016-2019
Finally we have returned to the PRO
God?
Finally a mild mannered intelligent and well rounded review with no over the top editing
I Agree 100% with you. Great review
Anorax you made a smart buy m8
Anorax and what about the weight and thickness smartass ?
A slightly thinner and lighter notebook isn't worth a $3,000 premium ... smartass ...
we both know that its not "slightly" thinner and lighter than your laptop :D
Thinner, lighter, has better design, higher resale value, longer battery life and running MacOS which is better optimised than Windows. Also Macbook Pro is not even for gaming.
Great review, very honest... I switched back to Windows as I'm a PS user and didn't want to pay $3000+ for a 16GB laptop... and still wanted an SD card. I'm finding the switch back to Windows10 quite refreshing, if Im honest... don't regret my decision one bit...
I get it USB C is the future but taking MagSafe!?
Nice wallpaper on that monitor behind you - where can I get it please?
Same here
theres some comments here with links...should be easy to find one
Yeah if you've managed to find any reply here please!

By far the most honest review of this product. Thumbs up man.Keep doing stuff like this.
APPLE SHOULD OPEN A DONGLE STORE, AND THEIR SLOGAN COULD BE: "THERE'S A DONGLE FOR THAT".
"A year from now, we'll be ok"... Get real
Can't wait to see cameras taking USB-C SD cards, and perfectly-good USB-A peripherals spanning the last 15 years getting thrown in the trash. 😉
After 5 years?
there is a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Dongle for people invested heavily in Thunderbolt 1 or 2
Hi Dave, great review as always. When you do you gaming review could you please be sure to include some DotA 2 testing/benchmarks. Thanks!
Make a XPS 15 2016 vs Razer blade 14 gtx 1060 vs the top tier macbook pro 15 2016 video please
Yves Peckstadt I'm just saying buying a mac and then not using FCP is a really inefficient way to spend your time and money
Keep up the good work Dave. Appreciate your honesty, expertise and general no BS approach to reviews :)
From an engineering perspective, it is completely utterly horrible.
umm okay but why the hell did they remove the sd card slot?
James King no, it's stupidity. I don't see sd cards being replaced anytime soon. usb c okay, maybe a year. but all cameras use sd card slots
Greed.
So you have to buy an external USB-C Dongle
And it is not like they can pull the whole "it is too big of a port" like other ports... an SD card Port is thin... this exclusion was purely money grabbing.
Dave is the best reviewer, he is calm, and the way he speaks makes people listen :D ty Dave Lee
Always trust in Dave 2D
This is "Macbook Air 2016". Pro my ass.
I haven't seen such good review for a long time - no hate, no blind love, so balanced - really nice to watch. Feels like you are not from internet :D
I'm here writing from 2018 just to say that people still care about SD cards and regular USB ports. And Apple's laptop situation is still a bummer :(
It'll take way more than just a year for USB-c to become mainstream.
Please give a link to that beautiful wallpaper!
Wallpaper link please
Great video btw
This is the first time I've watched this guy's videos and I can safely say they are the least aggressive, most professional and his voice is incredibly soft.... It's easy watching.
2018 I still see the ports a problem....
Peter Strobl Dual 5K monitors and Final Cut is the reason Apple went with AMD.
Peter Strobl TLDNR: NVIDIA GPUs are over 2x power hungry and is DisplayPort 1.3 only. Thunderbolt 3 is DisplayPort 1.2.
this was very honest. thank you for giving me a little bit more insight. but, if i may ask, where did you get your wallpaper? i really like it :D
Most of the people who criticize Windows OS probably haven't used a windows laptop since Windows 2000. I recently switched from an Apple MacBook Air ($900) to a Dell i7559 ($700) and both the OS and performance are so much better. If you tried windows, you would never go back to Apple
Cole Christie
I think some people are still scared after Windows 8
I have a Windows PC and a Macbook, both fairly new. MacOS is better, faster and more stable. Though it's not good for gaming.
Here's how I rate Windows since 95.
95:So, So bad. (Probably because I started at 98)
98: Good
2000;Me: Never tried them
XP: Good
Vista: Garbage
7: Amazing
8:Just Kill Me
10: I love it.
Some thoughts about the 2016 macbook:
1. The price... Just insane, when you can get a Dell XPS, Razer or any company gets you waaay more than Apple :(
(at least not in Norway where i live)
Think something has to change at Apple, like dropping prices or something!
Just my thoughts. :)
PS: Sorry for my English.
I’m still using mine 7 years later and it’s working pretty great for streaming and editing. I even use the webcam for streaming and get compliments on my camera. 🤷🏻♂️
Is there even a single person who has bought the silver version? :D
LOL not on purpose.
