  • Welcome to a new episode of Out Of My Element where I review random albums that people would think I have no business listening to. And today I'm going to be covering Taylor Swift's album 1989. This is my first time listening to a Taylor album in full so this should be...interesting.

    As someone who has been reviewing Taylor since pre-RUclips, you echoed a surprising number of my thoughts on this one. Absolutely right that 'Clean' is the best song on the album (co-produced by indie pop goddess Imogen Heap), and what's interesting is that on her most recent album 'Midnights' she actually pursues those darker and more mature sounds to flesh out more adult subject matter (basically the follow-up of her 2017 album 'reputation', which the best way to describe it is a glorious misfire villain turn) where she knows she's gotten much less relatable, which makes her way more interesting.
    Good luck with the Swifties, buddy, they're a fun lot!
    (also if you're doing a Beyonce album, make it Lemonade - at least that album has The Weeknd and Kendrick on it)

      Ah I'm curious to go backwards and see what people like you and Fantano said about this album. I mean, I didn't really enjoy it overall but I did think it was, at least, interesting. And that's totally unexpected for me. But it also made me kinda curious about her other stuff, but I'd be lying if I said I'd actually find the time to listen to them. Haha. But seeing her as a villain is super intriguing.

      “a glorious misfire villain turn” is a fabulous description of Reputation. I always describe it to people as a dramatic theatre piece. She was trying on something and clapping back and it seemed funny at the time but that album honestly stands up and hits hard…especially live.

      Interesting to hear someone else say this about “clean” because eveytime I meet another tswift fan and I tell them that 1989 is my fav album of hers and how I think “clean” is so slept on and may be the best song on the album. It’s just soo different. Never heard a style of song like that from ever again to this day. Similar styles yes but not exactly to the T. But although the fan will agree with me they never really have it as their favorites think it’s one of the top 3-5 songs on the album. But yeah I love Clean. The beat is soo amazing and different too. Never heard a beat quite like it before

    I thought Renaissance was amazing sonically between the vocal layering, the instrumentals, and the transitions. I had 0 expectations and it kinda blew me away. Even if you don't review it, definitely give it a listen.

    I was expecting you to hate this album, but I’m glad you gave it a fair listen. I feel like a lot of people don’t give her the time of day, since they are annoyed that she gets shoved in our faces by the media all the time. This album is a guilty pleasure of mine. I was shocked that I enjoy it as much as I do. Btw, what you said about those sounds in shake it off sounding like a squeezed fart was hilarious haha

    I feel like if you want “gothish” Taylor you should probably check out her song Haunted, Don’t Blane Me or My Tears Ricochet. I don’t think 1989 is her best album (that would be evermore or folklore) or her best album to listen to first (that would be red) but I’m glad you liked it! It’s definitely her most popular for a reason.
    As for Beyoncé I only heard three of her albums and while I do like Renaissance, Lemonade is amazing and definitely her best! I suggest checking that one out before you check out Renaissance. If you like both of those albums self titled is really good too!

  • @Starbuck-dr7yl
    @Starbuck-dr7yl 9 месяцев назад +1

    Love the review! 1989 is not my fave album of hers… but it was very popular. For Bey’s album, I think it would be unfair to do Renaissance which is 2022, current and here & now. 1989 was a decade ago. Unfair comparison. Not to mention different genres. But. Since you did 1989, I think you should compare with something at the same time, which is her album Beyonce. If you want to listen to Lemonade, that should be compared to Reputation. And if you want to listen to Renaissance, that should be compared to Midnights. That’s the only way to do it. But still, it’s a hard comparison because they are very different artists & genres. But comparing a 2022 rnb release to a 2014 80’s synth pop album is not really a true comparison.

  • @juanjeanjohnful
    @juanjeanjohnful 9 месяцев назад +2

    Blank Space is a critique of how the media portrays her relationships and how the media saw her at that time (as a man eater, can’t make men stay, burns through men, etc.)
    Clean is very similar to a lot of her music lyrically, so you would probably respond well to other songs. It’s also my favorite song on the album, and that’s because it’s the most “Taylor Swift” song lyrically on 1989 - it’s very familiar to her other work.
    I think the idea that she makes safe bubblegum pop is a bit outdated or at least lacking the nuance of her work. 1989 is definitely the one album you could say that the most about, but I don’t think that qualifies for others necessarily quite as much.
    Unlike many other pop artists, to really understand her work you sort of have to do a deep dive on it, especially lyrically. 1989 has the most generic lyrical content and the nuances and meaning in it make a bit more sense after understanding her as an artist in full.
    If you listen to her album Midnights and a pop song like Anti-Hero (the lead single), I don’t think you could call it bubblegum pop.
    She has plenty of “goth” moments, trust me. Much moreso than an artist like Katy Perry. Keep on going!
    There’s a reason why she’s by far the most popular artist working today, and generic pop isn’t enough to get to this level of fame.

    Because a lot of Taylor's appeal to you was in her songwriting I'd suggest you review Lemonade over Renaissance for now. Renaissance is maybe my favorite Beyoncé record but its a dance record, whereas Lemonade is Beyoncé's most lyrically focused record and a lot is all about her relationships, so it's probably the most 1-to-1 comparable to Taylor.

    • @Starbuck-dr7yl
      @Starbuck-dr7yl 9 месяцев назад

      I similarly suggested against Renaissance but it was because I feel comparing a 2022 album to a 2014 album isn’t much of a fair comparison. And Renaissance is my favorite of hers. I suggested actually Beyonce, because it was the save time period as 1989 and would be the closest comparison in time. I actually think he should do Renaissance vs Midnights 3 am.

    Taylor Swift vs Beyoncé question is very international or US only kind of question to me. US only? Beyoncé hands down. International? Taylor’s got it. Saying this as someone who has both of them in their top artist (along with prog metal and black metal was top genres). I’d like the see what your opinions would be with the instrumental changes made now but I love how you mentioned how they impacted the feel of it. Also haven’t heard the Lana/ Azealia beef in a hot minute had forgotten all about that 😂
    Honestly when I come to metal fans who want to introduce themselves to Taylor I ask them some questions, do you want to be open to fun and lose judgement and the pretentious nature that we all admittedly get in metal? Or do you want to focus on lyricism and keep it low key?
    Open to fun and throwing shit to the wind- 1989 have at it
    Focus on lyricism/still iffy about fun - folklore/evermore
    In the middle - Reputation / midnights / Red

    Hey Myke. Have u ever checked out some classical. Might sound silly but I have a feeling you would connect with mahler and maybe Beethoven. If I may I recommend mahler’s 5th symphony 4th movement (great version conducted by Leonard Bernstein) as a good introduction to his music. Very sad, beautiful, and also emotionally very deep in my opinion. It’s about 10 mins long so I think highly worth the time

    I enjoyed this video, Mike. As a huge Taylor fan, though, and a huge Myke C Town fan, I'm a little surprised that you didn't choose Taylor's version to listen to. That version is how she wanted the album to sound. The version you listened to is how some man wanted it to sound, regardless of her wishes. I feel like any one one who cares about how women are treated as business women, or just women's equality in general, should never listen to that original version, again.
    I'm not claiming that TS is some revolutionary, or huge activist or anything. Maybe I'm giving her too much credit? Maybe these new recordings are just a cash grab. But even if they are, that is cash going into her pocket, and not Scooter Braun's. So I'll support.

      "I feel like any one one who cares about how women are treated as business women, or just women's equality in general, should never listen to that original version, again. "
      Sigh. I knew someone would have something critical to say...but not this. Please explain how illegally downloading this album and listening to it somehow hurts women's quality. You're being extremly exaggeratory and turning something super simple into a grande point that is a bit silly if I'm being honest. Sorry, but this has nothing to do with women's equality and Taylor Swift getting .000000001 % of a penny from the rerecorded version isn't changing the world. I mentioned what she was doing in the video but listened to this one cuz it made sense in this context. But please don't try to position this as me somehow hurting women's rights. .Especially if we're discussing "supporting" artists with Spotify streams. And I'd hope that no one here would expect me to purchase her album for the purpose of a review like this. So this is/could be a much larger conversation that I don't think either of us really wants to have. But long story short...I'm glad you feel passionately about her, her music and women's rights. But let's not pose these sorts of challenges on the internet.

    • @vincentstephen3716
      @vincentstephen3716 9 месяцев назад

      This is not actually true. The original 1989 is an album she made with her friends and it sounded the way she wanted it to sound. The new version is her attempt to recreate it as best she can, ten years later and with some of the collaborators missing. The Taylor´s Version albums are for fans to buy and play so that Scooter doesn´t get the money, and as a chance to revisit the old material. For a person coming in curious about how Taylor´s music and how she got so big it absolutely makes sense to listen to the original first.

    I agree with the point about people being wrong for slut shaming her just because she chooses to write about her past relationships, but I do think there is something to be said about being aware of your rabid fanbase and the outcome it can have. When you put out a 10 min version of a track that's about a decade old relationship and all your fans start harassing the guy, who isn't even a musician, it makes me feel a bit off about the whole thing. Of course, she has the right to make a song about her past partners, but you can't tell me that you didn't expect this to be the outcome. Sadly this been a consistent conversation around these newer recorded albums, like which ex is gonna get the worst. I like the songs/albums themselves, just not everything around them.
    Hope you check out the two folk albums she did, Folklore and Evermore. They are her best in my opinion.
    Also, please start with lemonade for Beyonce. That album is a perfect companion piece to Jay-Z's 4:44.

    Saying you don’t like Taylor because you don’t like happy music tells us that you don’t know her music at all. I mean no insult by that because most non-fans have only heard the 5 biggest radio hits. She deliberately writes and releases songs to impact radio, which has helped her popularity but also screwed her at the same time. 1989 was a planned departure from country music and she wanted it to be 80’s synth pop, not hip hop. I think it’s absolute pop perfection, but it’s not a happy album. It’s a break up album (mostly about 1 person) and a clap back at critics. Even Shake it Off has a bite to it. Bad Blood is overdone and ridiculous, yes, but the remix with Kendrick Lamar is much better. The combo of her country lyrical roots with the synch pop (it’s not bubblegum pop) is so good when you really listen to the lyrics. You might like her Midnights album which is a more mature extension of this album. There are a couple of very poppy songs but lyrically they are dark. Taylor’s always been an undercover goth girl.

    Taylor Swift has always been one of those artists that I really don’t have an opinion on her as she’s just a run in the mill pop artist to me but grow more and more dislike simply for how her fans ride her to a scary point of almost stalking. Especially living in the kc area where her new “man” plays football so she’s shoved down our throats more than ever

    There’s no reason to compare Taylor to Beyonce, they are completely different artists and talented in completely different ways. Quite frankly, women musicians get compared and pitted against each other in a way that men do not. Misogyny is strong and pervasive.
    If you’re going to compare the two (again, which I really think is a pointless exercise at best), I wouldn’t compare 1989 to Lemonade or Renaissance. Beyoncé’s earlier albums were more mass market like 1989 - I think her self titled or I Am Sasha Fierce are more comparable if you absolutely have to do this.

    • @mykectown
      @mykectown  9 месяцев назад +1

      As I very clearly stated in the video, the comparison came from a conversation on a podcast I do revolving around who is more popular. Which, that in itself, came from another conversation revolving around celebrity. I'm not pitting anyone against anyone and it's got nothing to do with misogyny. They are two of the biggest pop artists in the world and I mentioned how I had never listened to either one. It was an innocent conversation and the virtue signaling here is really unnecessary.

      @@mykectown no I’m not. Any streaming service including RUclips sends him royalties aka $$ when people play music of artists he has bought the masters to. If you want to be supportive of Taylor then listen to her versions of her stolen albums (Fearless Taylor’s Version, Red Taylor’s Version, Speak Now Taylor’s Version, 1989 Taylor’s Version) her self titled debut album & reputation album haven’t been re-recorded yet and they are completely sonically different. The debut album is full of country twang, & rep has elements of edm pop r&b hip hop.

      @@jadegold8339 Jesus Christ. Yes, you are very wrong. Let's try this again. I did not use Spotify, nor did I use RUclips. Nor did I use any other stupid ass streaming service. You must be new around here cuz I've said many times I don't like streaming music. As I already said I downloaded the album in order for this review. I assume you know how downloading works but I did NOT put any money in ANYONE'S pocket except my ISP. So stop all the virtue signaling.
