I love that conservatives think forced birth will make women discover mother hood, and not just be crappy mothers. My mom was a deadbeat and could never remember my birthday…the day she birthed me without an epidural. And I got lucky. My mom doesn’t hate me, just has other priorities. I know plenty of people whose mothers resent their existence. You can force birth but you can’t force parenthood. And these same conservatives don’t believe in social supports for kids who aren’t supported at home.

and how does forced-birth force the man to be a father? if that was a thing that regularly happened human society would be extremely different.
it’s wild they’re talking about things like we have no evidence of what actually happens to kids when their parents don’t want them when in reality it’s not hard to find out already and it’s not good
and like is said above, they’re defunding any support those families and kids could maybe get

You are right, but these people do not care about loving one’s children. Their goal isn’t creating a society with emotionally healthy families, but following prescribed roles and functions. If you’re a man you “must” fulfill role A, and if you’re a woman then role B. Happiness is secondary, that is why so many are religious. Their dogmatic views supercedes everything, including their own inner voices telling them how miserable they really are, but they keep trying to gaslight themselves into believing that “real happiness” is not an emotion, but a way of life. So of course when they see people living in a different manner to them and actually feeling fulfilled they go into a frenzy, because such people are irrefutable proof that they have been cheated, but instead of retaliating against the belief system that is harming them they attack who they consider is the immediate cause of their pain. Because Lifting up the veil of their failed beliefs is too difficult and painful for them. They need to stopped regardless.

A woman being seen as always in need of a "protector", and unable to live by herself, is a classic patriarchal belief. From father to husband to son, and if they die, the responsibility of her life falls on the closest male relatives - a structure often defended in the name of "protection", but really it only exists/-ed because patriarchs put women in the same category as children, thinking them no more mentally capable to protect and care for themselves than a child.
Oh and most of them don't treat children right either. See who's pro corporal punishment and so called "parents rights", aka parents raising their child however they like, even at the expense of a child's basic rights to an education, safety, freedom, healthcare.
I'm currently reading about Christian pro slavery arguments, which often compared slavery to marriage, specifically a slave's obedience to the master, compared to a wife's obedience to her husband and a child's to the father. Saying all three are godly and good and for "protection" of the slave/wife/child. They also pointed out how much marriage is like slavery, just like some feminists years afterwards- except the pro slavery Christians made the analogy while supporting all three.

What's even more unsettling, is how they try convince other single women to settle down, as well. Giving advice on how to attract a suitable spouse, when they themselves can't. Its almost as if they got married just to fit in, have been raised to think their only purpose in life is to build their lives around a man, or have an irrational fear of being alone.
They always ask, when am I going to get married or have children. Not about my hobbies, career goals, physical health, or financial stability. Not to mention, psychological studies show that single and/or child free women are more happy than married females. In the US you can technically be a billionaire and support either the republicans or the democrats (which is what conservatives mistake for "the left" only because it's technically left of republicans) because neither one of these parties take any real steps towards limiting extreme wealth accumulation. Your choice as a billionaire then is more down to how much you hate minorities and the disenfranchised and vote R/D accordingly. So when they talk about the "elite left" they actually mean "rich democrat voters". Which is a thing that certainly exists. Individually capable of controlling their gender and appearance, let alone fertility (so if someone wants to be a or trans or switch they can). No money. Iain Banks was also very forthright about his detestation of capitalism in a couple of essays/in character speeches about it.
Elon Musk's type of ideal society is more like the world in Heroes Die by Stover. They basically had an explicitly designed caste society modelled after a corporation so you got assigned your caste based on how rich your parents were (so they had Investor, Leisure Class, Administrator, so on). Higher technology. Every time I read about some dork enlightmenment fascist in big tech I think that if they actually read the books they'd think of this as an ideal, not the society that the protagonist spent four books and most of his life trying to burn to the ground because there was zero possibility of things ever changing otherwise.

You don't have to go very far back in history to find women who'd had 10-20 pregnancies during their lives. Not all would got to term, not all would be born alive. The toll on women isn't just the raising of children, they've felt the loss of them too. The pill is far from ideal, it's never been completely safe for women. But for many women it's the best option out there. Especially when there are men who object to some methods of contraception because "It doesn't feel as good."
Of course, they aren't interested in any sensible discourse on the topic. They literally don't care about women's lives, they just want to control them. Maybe they're frightened of getting left out of The Family, where they can benefit from the general mothering? Women can build perfectly good, loving, supportive, families without a man. Some choose to, some it just happens to, and some have happy egalitarian relationships - even some with men! 😉
I like men, there are men I've loved and still love, many are damn good friends. But I live alone by choice, in my own space. (Where no one can complain about my eating crisps in bed!)

My mother was raised to be a wife and mother, as was typical for women of her generation. She thought she married well; however, he turned out to be a bipolar alcoholic and was not capable of supporting a family. She raised 3 kids on a meager “pink” collar salary once he abandoned the family. I’m sure there were happy traditional families out there in the ‘50s and ‘60s, but the only friend I knew who had a father at home was routinely beaten by him. People will have sex regardless, birth control is actually what prevents unhappy families. Men also want to have sex without worrying about producing babies, so who would this benefit? The only people who "benefit" are abusive controling men who hate women, everyone else suffers.
Married/monogamous people don't always want kids, maybe they're waiting so they can save up money or something, maybe they already have two kids and don't want more, there's so many reasons, birth control isn't just for people who sleep around.
Birth control is also extremely important for medical care, many women need the pill in order to live a normal life, there's so many hormonal/menstrual issues women have, and often birth control is the only treatment for it.
I myself take birth control for medical reasons, and it saved my life, I had severe pmdd which made me suicidal for two weeks every single month, after starting birth control I no longer deal with that and can actually function (I was already on antidepressants for years but medications are not made for women, our hormonal cycles are not taken into consideration, so meds don't really help during the two weeks of pms and period).
I started birth control at 27, honestly wish I started it sooner, I could have lived better instead of being stuck in a cycle of severe pmdd depression and regular depression.
Many women have periods so severe that they pass out and/or have to be hospitalized, some bleed several times a month or even nonstop for months (go to the gynecologist if you are experiencing any of these things, it is common but not normal) birth control isn't a fix all but it helps regulate the hormonal cycle which can alleviate or reduce the severity of symptoms. Birth control is also the only treatment for endometriosis, which a large percentage of women have (I have it myself).
Needless to say, birth control is a medical necessity, and denying women access to it is a huge infringement on our rights.

These conversations exhaust me. The Conservative position begins from the point of view that women cant be trusted with our own bodies. My grandmother was a Catholic. She had 12 children. 4 died in childbirth. She had her last child at 42. Her husband died when her last child was 2 leaving her to raise the kids alone. There was no social security in the uk at this time. She said that she was glad that my grandfather died when he did because if he hadnt she would have. This influenced me. Im now menopausal and able to look back at my relationship with the pill and sex critically. I am grateful for the pill. It has been important for my health. Managing my unmanageable periods. It has ment that i was able to enjoy casual sex as well as sex with long term partners. I started my childrearing story at the point where my grandmother stopped. I have one child, the child that i cherish and can afford to provide for. I have a career that i enjoy. I am single and i am happy. I may venture back into the world of dating when it suits me and my family. Casual sex can be fun and sex in relationships can enhance intimacy and conection. Locking yourself in the bedroom because you are afraid that your husband will demand sex and you are genuinely afraid you will die if you have another child sounds like hell on earth to me. Yet, what was wrong in that situation was not the access to contraception itself but 1) the lack of information from doctors on the possible side effects of the medication they prescribe and 2) the lack of scientific research for better options.
Even if the pill is not for me, it is life-changing for many women!

  • @manic_girl

Matt Walsh knows nothing about the pill and women in general. I’ve been on it since I was 16 because I have a chronic pain condition called endometriosis that causes unbearable periods. It can also affect my fertility. Even now, in a stable happy long term relationship with someone I intend to marry, I take the pill and have an IUD to control my chronic pain. It’s never gone, but it’s so much easier to manage with birth control. The pill isn’t bad for me, it saved me years of excruciating pain.
This is nothing against women who use the pill to prevent pregnancy. You do you, I support you 10000% always. I just think Matt Walsh has no idea people take the pill for other things too.

  • @j.robertson9025
    @j.robertson9025 3 месяца назад +9

Um… when people had “casual sex” during ancient times, it usually involved slavery and/or prostitution, which was often dangerous and forced. In other words, it was only “casual” for the men involved. This is why I don’t actually object as much to what Peterson said about casual sex. So often, it’s only “casual” for the man who wants no-strings-attached sex and who is more likely to act selfish in bed if he knows it’s just a one-off encounter. Women, on the other hand, still have to navigate the risks of potential pregnancy, higher likelihood of STDs, violence, and rape. There’s nothing “casual” about it. But just as right-wing men want women to be private property, left-wing men want women as public property, which often underlies their true motivation behind defending women’s reproductive rights. That being said, even without casual sex on the table, limiting women’s control over their bodies and forcing them to be dependent upon men is dangerous to women, children, and families in general. God forbid women are forced into Matt Walsh’s tradwife utopia and their husband gets laid off, or gets injured and can’t work, or decides to upgrade to a younger model. How is this woman supposed to take care of her family then? What marketable skills would she have that would bring in enough money to provide for her children? The trad wife to single mom pipeline is real and it’s completely idiotic to pretend otherwise.

The speaker from the Heritage Foundation does have a valid point about the side effects that can occur from taking the contraceptive pill. In fact she underplays them somewhat, since there can be serious effects on physical health (elevated cancer risk) as well as the more common effects on mood and mental health..... HOWEVER, her conclusions do not seem to be logical if the intended result is harm reduction (restrict the pill to return "the danger" to sex?!)
Her points do demonstrate in more ways than one just how far we still are from a genuinely equal and feminist society. Women have always been the ones to suffer from the societal "rules" around sex and pregnancy. While the pill (and safe, legal abortions) have been a way to free them from some of the consequences of our sexist sexual mores and provide them finally with a degree of control over their own sexual and reproductive decisions, we have failed to even the burden.
Women are still the ones bearing the burden, making the decisions and dealing with the mental and physical side effects of contraception which are so much worse than they need to be because of ingrained sexist and puritanical attitudes affecting the mediacal and pharmaceutical sectors, and _still_ having to deal with the consequences when it fails. All the while being attacked by bigots who think they're sluts or immoral, or are "destroying society" despite appareently ignoring the necessary contribution men must be making to all these "evils".
If you have a partner for whom pregnancy is a possibility, talk to them about contraception.
