I'd add that the longer-lasting discussions generated by the 3-episodes-per-week structure doesn't just help Arcane to be successful as a product, but also understood as a piece of art. People pointed out so many things I missed on first viewing, and the week between each act also let me stew in my own thoughts about the show instead of just forgetting. I definitely wouldn't have been able to digest all the things I enjoy about Arcane if the first season came out all at once.
This made me realise I only remember as much as I do about season 1 thanks to a lot of video essays discussing it over the last three years. I watched it all in one sitting because I started the show the final weekend of s1’s release.
i still think we should go back to the 1 episode a week for most shows, binging is fun but it's over so quick and i always feel drained afterwards. making a good season of a show you're falling in love with last several months is something i used to hate as a teenager but now can't get enough of.
I'd argue this is the benefit of the weekly release, and why I really dislike binging as a practice because it dimishes the experience. It's because of this I really enjoy how anime and manga still work on this time frame because you will have time to both reflect and be excited for what happens next. Though I think the 3 ep schedule expands on this function to a comfortable amount
I KNOW what’s coming and it hurts anyways. I rewatch s1 all the time and it still feels brand new all the time even though I can literally quote a lot of it 😂 I wish I could rewatch it again SO BAD
I think this show is one of the greatest pieces of art to ever be created. The writing, the animation, the sound, and even the shot-style are all perfect. It sets the bar so high that every other type of animation seems less than by comparison. I don't even play League of Legends so I can watch this as pure entertainment not necessarily something that is on my game radar.
i also think this structure is really benefitting the show's pacing. Its pretty obvious that arcane is having to deal with the technicalities of fitting all of this amazing stuff in a very short season that i don't think was originally intended. I feel like these breaks in between acts gives time for the story and the audience to breath and process things, rather than having to have slow scenes embedded in the show and take up valuable time for progressing the story!!!
Another great example of long pilots having a great impact on the success of a show is Oshi no Ko. The premiere was an unheard of 90 minutes, practically a movie. However, it fit the story telling structure so well and is considered one of the best first episodes of an anime of all time. I love that TV shows and anime are getting more experimental with their release formats. I really think it's proving to be a great idea
I think what also benefits from the 3 episode drop is attention span. People do not like waiting on set up and world/character introduction. They want to get to the pay off so dropping all the build up at once makes it seem like they are getting to the "good stuff" faster and thus, they are willing to stick around longer.
What's cool is that each music number in S2 Act 1 mirrors in presentation a similar sequence over S1 (e.g. Firelights music intro vs Caitlyn's strike force music intro). S2 Act 1 is introducing not just the story that came before, but also it's cinematography and artstyle to a new and returning audience.
Something about the tone of your voice when you talk about emotions/emotional moments makes me tear up a little bit. It's amazing. Most anime video essay-ers have not so great voices, but yours is awesome

wow you really put into words what i was thinking about the 3 act release too! it creates the perfect balance between having enough to talk about while not waiting too long for the next episode, i really hope shows like stranger things will adapt this form of release as it is just sooo exciting! i also really appreciated the schnee mention, as he was the one that really got me thinking about entertainment as art and deeper meanings of shows, im also excited to check your channel out! great work!
I was talking with friends about this exact topic and how clever is the three episodes a week format, glad to see you post about it ! Also, congrats on the sponsorship !!
I've been a fan of your channel and got introduced to you through your Frieren analyses after I finished the show and wanted to reflect on it...I think it was your video on Frieren's demons that was the latest when I started watching you, so 4 months or so ago. I just wanted to say that I think you are excellent at what you do. You are 1 of 2 RUclipsrs that I actually anticipate the next video for since you tend to approach shows and movies with unique topics rather than simply talking about obvious things that everyone else has already discussed before. I only waited to watch this one bc I needed to catch up on Arcane first. I honestly never even really thought much about the 3 episode rule until now, but it was interesting to think about and see how media has been evolving. Nice work! I'm enjoying watching your channel grow. You'll be at 100k before you know it :) P.S. congrats on the sponsorship! I remember you saying you were trying to get one or something in a past video.
having finished the 2nd act I definitely think the 3 episode structure works extremely well as despite full on crying for the first time in years and cause of a netflix series no less, I've been able to see other peoples insights and marinate in my own thoughts, even if only subconsciously at times, the space between acts and even between the first and second season allow the stories to organically grow and almost GAIN momentum or atleast retain it where as if it dropped all at once you'd have the binge watchers going crazy of the ending while some people haven't even finished half of it, everyones in the same place, everyone gets to talk about it together, bounce ideas and discussions off each other and gain a greater appreciation for it on another note holy fuck ep 6 has scarred me for life they did not have to one up themselfs from episode 3 for the first season man ;_;
A good way I stop myself from having super high expectations for a media is to consider what we have as the start. Season 2 is the end, not a continuation, this mindset let me turn off the critical part of my brain and have fun with every episode. Part 2 comes out in 6 minutes and I am watching it asap
BROOOOO, I'm sooo gald you talked about this. It's been on my mind. Binging shows vs week to week. I just talked to one of my mates, and I said Arcane is a perfect balance as I get to sit down for around 3 hours and binge-watch it. I'm gonna do this every couple of weeks for this season.
Cannot wait for your analysis after finishing act2 and this one. I feel hopeful (that is going to be as good as a season one ) after act1 and then very complicated after act2😅
Kinda funny how at 4:33 you even listed Valorant that has nothing to do with the runterra universe, but skipped Legends of Runterra which is (or was now I guess) the game for people who wanted to dive deeper into the universe.
It still sorta is, there was actually a frame from season 2 episode 4 used in one of Warwicks cards before the episode came out, credited to Fortiche as a «hint». The story is a bit told through flavor text, but it IS there.
@ yeah, most new content is driven by path of champions, and to be fair they seem to be investing quite a bit into it, but overall i feel LoR is best as a competitive tcg… and the fact that they used arcane screenshots instead of new art is actually a big budget issue.
I personally didn't have a problem with the dialogue. My personal gripe with the first act had more to do with the pacing. I felt there were moments that were sped through. But the show is still fantastic and I understood why they sped through it
A big thing for me with any media is suspension of disbelief. What impresses me the most about Arcane is how solid the worldbuilding and its characters are. They did an excellent job staying true to the core of the characters while at the same time making them believable, tangible beings. The stories feel fleshed out and properly weaved without feeling too forced or unrealistic for the world. What also certainly helped was the seasonal trailers Riot makes for League. Almost all of them are masterpieces in short storytelling with good music (particularly fond of The Call, that brings me to tears every single time). It also makes me sad that Legends of Runeterra, the now slowly abandoned Riot card game that did so much to help expand the universe didn't get a spot in the light with Arcane...
Yo super off topic but I didnt realize you were Pey the musician. Didn't realize you are a goat in 2 different subjects. Been watching all your freiren videos and just want to say hi from the Atrioc Community,
I am one of the few people who think s2 writing is not as good as s1. The thing which I had immediate issue with was that the writers did not explain properly the passage of time between the terrorist attack and Jayce fixing the gauntlets and making Caitlyn's the gun. This lack of uncertainty led to rushed drama between Vi and her. There are missing pieces of char. development between those two. The growth of Caitlyn after the dead of her mother is understandable but we had just few scenes showing us her internal struggle before turning to this zealot of revenge. Also the dialog between those two was clunky at times. Jinx's plan to paint Piltover also was not build properly. It just happened. It seems its so easy to go around this city which is under siege. Again her plan might have been executed in this time frame when Jayce fixed the prop. Who knows. I don't like the fight scenes either. It remind me of Zack Snyder's obsession with slow mo. It makes the scenes prolonged. The camera editing makes those fights hard to follow. Art is prioritized over substance and logic. Also the music montages are happening too often. In s1 there was only few and they were on levels which to this day cannot be reached, Elko vs Jinx being the top. Now every episode there is at least 1. With that being said the season is magnificent. It is just not on the level of s1.
I dont agree with everything here, but the writing and pacing has definetly taken a few hits comparativley, thats true. In my view everything is still logically consistent, but a lot of interesting or important scenes are skipped/only shown in montage or implied and a lot of stuff is left for the audience to infere or guess. Nothing too detrimental so far, but definetly noticable.
@@datzfatz2368 Fair enough. But those gaps are too many. For example what happened to Jayce after he was with Heimmer and Ekko? How did he find Viktor's place... I don't know man. I think the follow throughs on the set-ups became too fast paced without given the proper build up. Again, the level of s1's writing will not be matched soon, so for s2 it will be hard to follow. But they are just skipping too much, man! I was expecting peak and received just enjoyment. Art is prioritized over writing.
I think the Netflix model of releasing whole seasons has done a lot of damage to retaining relevance in the public consciousness. I've been actively trying to watch new stuff at a slower pace so that it sticks with me. If I binge watch a season of something, I think back a few weeks later and can't remember much.
The thing with Arcane is that it is only possible because Riot does not make any profit out of the show itself, but rather from their games, that will get a lot of players because of the animated show. It is so difficult for pure-entertainment companies to build animations like this because it is very costly and they do not have a "previous built universe" like League of Legends lore. So in a nutshell, Riot has a treasure in hands: it can create the best animated shows to ever exist, without having to worry a lot about costs (since most of it will come from in-game purchases anyway), and it has a giant amount of stories to tell: League has over 150 characters and 10s of different regions. Arcane storyline is not even the most exciting story available on league's lore, but they did a fantastic job there. Once riot moves to Ionia or Freijlord, we might see even better stories with even better characters. If riot can pull off an Arcane-level show using characters like Irelia, Kai'sa, Ashe, Ezreal... They have a money-printing machine and league will be the most played game ever.
This 3 episode drops are pretty great in my speculation. People nowadays don't want to wait and watch a show for 3 - 4 weeks to get a hook in current seasonal anime culture. So having 3 episode (about a hour of content) At the same time gives the viewers both a hook to get interested in the show, And it also clues the viewer in to what direction it's going to take from that point. The best example is " Oshi no KO" s 1st episode. Most people who loved the show , would likely be criped out of the series just if it was only 20 minutes ( upto the point of Aqua and Ruby's birth) , and they wouldn't have given the show a chance. The 90 minutes runtime was a fantastic decision for it.
Lots of approaches being explored ATM with how to breakup consumption of media. Three very different examples: Demon Slayer Movie set a push for canon anime show movies. DanDaDan had a 3 episode (THREE) theatre release months prior. That creates hype. And one show that didn't do a 3-part release, but that should've and the story was divided into 3 parts: One Piece Live Action. It's audience already is used to weekly episodes/manga and new audiences would stay in tune longer. Show did fantastic, but would've been longer lasting. Great video. Would be interesting to explore this concept for other show release schedules and budgets/constraints.
Cheers Pey, I started watching with Frieren and enjoy these videos. Though why place non-adsense in the style of TV timed interruptions? In *mutual consideration,* plenty people watch other folks' non-adsense if at very front/back/both, rather than skip/click off =/
I personally like binge watching series. So I just wait for the whole thing to be out and then watch it all. The 3 episode release means I don't have to wait 9 weeks to watch it, but 3 weeks instead. It's a middle ground for ppl who like to binge watch series and those who like to watch it as it's beeing released
Firefly was way ahead of it's time, because the original pilot was supposed to be two hours, fleshing out the main cast and providing an explanation of how they all came to be on Serenity at the same time, despite the wide array of characters. Unfortunately, FOX decided they needed to grab the viewers in the first hour and forced the writers to come up with what was chronologically the second episode, the train job. What's worse is that FOX also continued to release episodes out of order, making any hope at following an overarching story impossible.
9:30 I would personally say this is worded slightly wrong. Basically every single playable character in league has a story which is already established, but none of them have an ending, each one is doing something in the world at some time. Arcane had the very difficult task of getting these characters from their starting point, to the point where they are in the game, and then they have some freedom in writing what comes after this snapshot that is shown in league. I agree with your point but not with the exact wording you used.
I remember LOST had a 2 hour pilot, and they usually combined the last couple episodes for a 2-3 hour finale every season. That structure and pacing always felt very satisfying, like true must-see 'event' television.
YES and they are bringing back live events like with the Tyson Paul fight which sucked but the point is the good parts of cable TV and its impact on culture are coming back. Shared experiences, hype, communities that form out of love for art.
I think it’s a real mistake to reduce the definition of Riot Games to a “gaming company.” That’s kind of like saying Disney is primarily an animated movie studio. Riot understands that their real goldmine is their world-building IP, which happens to include their game. In the next 10 years, I wouldn’t be surprised to find a League of Legends extension in a Disneyland theme park.
🥹 Animation and Anime have been a part of my experience since the mid-70s - and probably before, but I was a child then. Arcane has achieved what I’d been wishing for since Live Action became the go-to for adaptations. It made the Story & Characters the celebrity of the Series. It made the Impossible Reality an Undeniable Fact of its World. 😌 And we are eating it up. 👏
What do you mean nobody waited for Arcane , the demand was huge 😭 As a League player Riot gave us a bunch of cinematics and they were banger , we asked non stop for a serie for years
honestly I already know the show is done and ready. These "weekly" release are for you to stay subscribed to their service. But if they gonna do this, that means they're gonna do a 2 cliff hanger, in a 3 part release. This is could make or break the story flow if it's done incorrectly.
eh, i think this is a good way to do it. Its enough content with each release (about 2 hours) to be juicy and substantive, but it leaves enough time between the episodes and enough time in the public eye to really settle into peoples minds. With one week between each arc you get to think about it, rewatch it, analyse it, really get into the weeds, but also dont have to wait too long for the continuation. Of course its a marketing tactic, but it has benefits for the consumer as well. The Bingewatching encouraged by all the full released seasons over the last few years has really damaged Peoples attentionspan and media literacy.
@@datzfatz2368 I agree. The attention span of great shows before this release method was gone and done so fast. But I don't want show to fall into this we need 2 cliff hanger trope as well.
This popped up randomly after i watched watched arc 2. Though its still good things felt rushed and i am worried abour the payoff for everything they jave been setting since they are billing this as the end for these characters
BIG HEADS UP PEY !!!!! arcane is not 1:1 of original league lore it has been stated arcane IS overwriting current league lore, best example is viktor who originally literally had 0 motive

They have a money-printing machine and league will be the most played game ever.
arcane season 2 is really good so far, one of the best tv shows ive seen so far
God i just love arcane SO FUCKING MUCH
Just you wait till you get to that act 2! WOW
LEZGOOO, PEY TALKING ABOUT ARCANE!! I'm gonna appreciate this series more!!
They said this Season 1 of Arcane. No show on Netflix has been able to replicate it.
What a great video
Lots of approaches being explored ATM with how to breakup consumption of media. Three very different examples:
Demon Slayer Movie set a push for canon anime show movies.
Star Wars Andor also had a three episode release
wasn't aware of what this series came from but like the satyle. haven't seen it yet and saw it on bd. i think i might buy it!
wow imagine if they released one episode per week that would be crazy and never done before
arcane is top tier 🔥
The Legend of Vox Machina over on Prime Video has released all of its three season in 3 episode chunks per week
Arcane is REVOLUTIONARY
congrats on the sponsor, but i miss the part about you saying this part is about a sponsor you might get in the future xD
I’m crying right now. Why is it so saaaad! Why do they have to be so good at writing!!! 😭😭😭 (I’m talking about the second arc in season 2)
Netflix has made me greedy for episodes. Drop them all and let me binge, dammit...
If you're ever looking for another show with phenomenal writers who worked towards a predetermined ending check out the clone wars 2008
The lore was your least favorite part of League? That's... a new and unexplored take.
I was also thrown by that. Whhaaaatt?!???? I want more info on that!?
@@PhyreSpore yeah same I feel like he said that just to say it, there is no reason for that to be your least favorite part of league...
ARCANE VIDEO, NO WAY!!!!
SCHNEE MENTION AS WELL, NO WAY!!!!
Give Jinx a happy ending I BEG
I remember LOST had a 2 hour pilot, and they usually combined the last couple episodes for a 2-3 hour finale every season. That structure and pacing always felt very satisfying, like true must-see 'event' television.
It's quite interesting
I think to appropriately judge this form of release, one should also take a look at Steven bombs and why those were really badly received
bravo
the rule of 3 is very real
What do you mean nobody waited for Arcane , the demand was huge 😭
As a League player Riot gave us a bunch of cinematics and they were banger , we asked non stop for a serie for years
honestly I already know the show is done and ready.
Though its still good things felt rushed and i am worried abour the payoff for everything they jave been setting since they are billing this as the end for these characters
just watched act 2 what the fuck how do they keep doing it
BIG HEADS UP PEY !!!!! arcane is not 1:1 of original league lore
it has been stated arcane IS overwriting current league lore, best example is viktor who originally literally had 0 motive
❤ Thank you!
I refuse to watch a streaming show until all the episodes are released.
