Don't break the 4th wall, just make it disappear
This week I explored an interesting idea surrounding the 4th wall. It was something I didn't notice the first time I watched the show and I couldn't find another example of a story doing this. Can you think of one?

When they don't make the demons evil
Просмотров 70 тыс.День назад
Frieren's exploration of demons is really interesting. It's probably the thing I got the most hung up on in my first watch through. After spending a lot of time thinking about it I feel like I learned a lot about the way I want to think about media. It ended up giving me answers for other shows I struggled to enjoy. Interesting. I think you need to give a definition of what your version of evil is. Providing this may help you and listeners understand why there may be disagreements between you and others on when something should be designate as evil. For example there are spiritual groups that say "demons" (are spiritual entities that bring or cause evil.) Thus anything with a physical body cannot be inherently evil; Only acted upon or influenced by evil. There are also those that believe the existence of evil is dependent on the existence of complex thought and understanding of morals. For example anything that does not have thought (like a rock) and anything that does not have complex thought for the understanding of morals (like an animal) cannot be evil. Such things can however be described as cruel or uncaring.

I think this is a really strange and really wrong interpretation of it. Demons in Frieren are explicitly evil and malicious. Yes, Frieren is a lot about the ecology of a fantasy world, but this particular conflict is not about that at all. Frieren goes out of it's way to show that demons are irredeemably evil. The moments that show facets of the demons nature only exists to deepen the mystery of the absolute depths of malice a demon is capable of. Compare this to, let say, a tiger, which might be featured in a self vs nature conflict. Tigers are much more similar to humans than demons are in Frieren. Tigers have a hunting instinct, but they are capable of loving, capable of having empathy, of forming bonds, they also have a need to rest, a need to play and tigers can be avoidant of danger and conflict. The danger of the tiger is not that it is inherently evil, it is that it is hungry or threatened, both things the self can work around. The demons immediately plot and scheme to kill Frieren, that's not nature, not instinct, that's a malicious force.

Honestly, Frieren is an absolutely fantastic anime in many respects. Mushoku Tensei on the other hand definitely has its ups and downs but I think part of Rudy’s character as written is that he does eventually find some sort of redemption, but it’s not quick nor is it straightforward. A point brought up in the most recent season was that even though he had the memories of a previous life that had extended into adulthood, in certain respects he hadn’t really *lived* much during that life due to shutting himself away along with his self worth issues and depression. His reincarnation gave him another chance, but it wasn’t one he was mature enough to properly frame for himself for a very long time, because, to paraphrase his own words: *‘He may have memories of an entire past life, but for all of that, he’s just been a kid playing at being an adult for a long time’*

Conflict of ideologies might be person vs person, but it probably isn't. I think it's more nuanced because it could be nature vs technology for example? The problem with condeming a dark topic is if you got the opportunity to condemn something you feel is morally wrong (like being a heathen) only to later change your beliefs about the topic, will you just laugh it off or will you end the lives of those you love as recompense? Logically you can't do the latter because they're the reason you have a moral compass to begin with so morality to you literally serves the master of (self) preservation. But if that's the case, then what the fuck is your moral condemnation worth other than a thinly veiled attempt at rss gathering at the sake of another's moral (guess)? We're all wrong all the time about this shit, and there is importance in the rigorious testing of moral philosophies but if the next step is judging then the judge should also wager an equal amount of risk. If you fire that gun, either you're right or you're a murderer. If you laugh it off later as a mistake, that's not funny. It's a murderer that escaped and is going to murder again. Those who condemn such things with commitment should give up their humans rights upon making such a mistake, with commitment.

  • @Xaxp
    @Xaxp 21 час назад

As interesting as the demons not being evil is, i feel like im at the point where ive seen it too many times and its an overdone trope. Its certainly cool when demons have understandable motives or have ideals and interpersonal conflicts, but what makes a demon, a demon, is its supposed to be evil in a way that only the most morally black can achieve. Otherwise youre just making a human with horns and weird powers. One of the main praises I have for Berserk is that the demons (Apostles) can have understandable motives but are always still evil. You literally CANNOT become an apostle without being evil, as the behelits require you to sacrifice something so precious that you essentially have to cut out a piece of your humanity in order to gain the power and freedom they promise. They still retain all of their faculties and dont lose their minds, but they CHOOSE to remain evil. To me, it works because an apostle is simultaneously humanly and inhumanly evil.

" The "good" is, according to its concept, των πρως τι; thus every good is essentially relative, for its being consists in its relation to a desiring will. "Absolute good" is, therefore, a contradiction in terms. "Highest good" (summum bonum) really signifies the same thing-a final satisfaction of the will, after which no new desire could arise,-a last motive, the attainment of which would afford enduring satisfaction of the will. But, according to the investigations which have already been conducted in this Fourth Book, such a consummation is not even thinkable. The will can just as little cease from willing altogether on account of some particular satisfaction, as time can end or begin; for it there is no such thing as a permanent fulfilment which shall completely and for ever satisfy its craving. "

Ocean Waves was released in 1993. A quiet and grounded film that I have read was not of much interest to Miyazaki. It was a film by his staff at the time about high school students and their growing up. I would be curious to know if there was any reference back to any of that film when creating Up on Poppy Hill which was released in 2011.

The last part is important. People keep acting like framing isn't a thing. This is similar to my beef to redemption arcs where characters story doesn't act like what the person did was wrong in the first place. There are a lot of villains that felt like they were just sorry that their plans didn't work.

Many people say demon slayer is overrated and the only reason why it's popular is because the animation/production is good LOL. I've watched a lot of anime with good animation and not all of them are good. Example: fate stay night unlimited blade works, same studio. I don't know about you guys but i like a few characters, but i don't like the story at all. For me fate zero is better. P.s "demon slayer season 4 suck" lol , why? Because it's a training arc? How the heck do you want to make characters strong? By cheating skills? (Like in the isekai slime?) Fans of slime can hate me by saying it sucks, i've only watched a bunch of episode but man how he defeats his foes are boring as heck, just click delete button and he's done, WTF. Even my friend who liked it at first dislikes it now.

I feel like "when frieren is not there" unease thing is fairly common in shows and movies where we are conditioned to realy on certain chracters and percieve them as safety net. Its easy to miss untill you start pattern recognizing. Ive been watching peaky blinders recently and it comes to mind. Thomas shelby being the main character and the mind behind everything we are made to think everything will be all right however much stuff is going down when hes there. There is unease when he is not around and something happens though the other characters are shown capable like polly shelby. Even when things arent going well i found myself thinking its alright thomas shelby is there. But there are moments i feel dread where its shown even though tommy is there things arent getting fixed but getting worse. Though it gets resolved somehow, im feeling what the side characters are feeling. Same goes for jujutsu kaisen when gojo is there and isnt there and gets boxed. Happens with any character who is shown to be the safety net with good storytelling. It is particularly strong when that character is the main character.

A lot of people seem to be siding with Demon Slayer because it's a "simple" story, but I don't think that's the problem. It's just a badly written story. The problem with someone like zenitsu is not that he's a simple character, it's that he's a bad one. Also, why in the world is Muzan bothering to listen to all of kagaya's exposition? Muzan has never been showed to have this level of patience or interest in looong monologues

  • @theimaginist3310

Demon Slayer and Frieren are just two wildly different types of storytelling. I prefer Demon slayer out of the two because I prefer the faster pace and the humanity; everyone in Frieren seems a little too much like Frieren herself; too calm, too sedate and too slow. Slower pacing is kind of the point of the show since the MC is so long-lived, so I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing. I do admit that the writing in Frieren is definitely deeper and more profound, but both shows are handled competently. I think since both Demon Slayer and Frieren are of very high quality production-wise, it becomes a matter of personal taste. I think Frieren is more technically brilliant, but Demon Slayer is ultimately going to be a more popular choice due to its simpler story, faster pace and more colorful characters.

I personally think this definition of the 4th wall break is extremely reductive to the art of story telling. A story is all about emotion and us connecting with the characters. We feel along with them and thus empathise and cry or feel joy. A story focusing on just enjoyment without emotion is just a bad story. Essentially calling the primary duty of a good story a 4th wall break removes the entire point of the story

Mushoku Tensei is a product which shows characters that are not perfect doing their best while still maintaining imperfection. It also embodies a hard line of the reader being an outsider looking in at what is a truly alien world. Slavery is common place in the MT world and the way children are arranged to create family unions and also the much lower reverence to the importance we hold to sexual assault make the setting always feel off and uncomfortable. Those aspects lead to its drive to keep you reading, Rudy does come across a couple of old world vs new world morality conundrums himself. The easiest one to point out is the topic of Incest vs Polygamy. Overall the series itself is not out to make a redemption story where a broken degenerate is able to clean up into a saint, Rudy makes progress to become a net positive person to society while accepting his degenerate tendencies and manages them to a point to where they don't ruin his new life. Paul is one of the best case studies of how to connect with a character who is flawed but still a net positive to those in his life. He is a pervert who assaulted a woman who then cheats on his wife with the same woman. He is an alcoholic and continues to bed other women when searching for his wife. He is a bumbling fool of a parent who makes many mistakes in raising his son. Overall outside these ugly flaws he is a Hero who saved thousands of lives, saved his family, and was the best dad to his daughters. His last big line to Rudy is a nice packaged message about his character. "Save your mother even if it kills you." It's a highly inappropriate message to tell his son but one that shows his dedication to his family, and that includes Rudy which he throws himself in the path of death to save. MT is not a story that glorifies bad behavior, but one that accepts it as just one of the many building blocks of its setting and cast members. This makes the story feel three dimensional and layered with intrigue from worldbuilding to characters.

Nah, watching them walk around looking for a blue flower with trash tier dialogue for a whole 30 minutes was pretty much the end for me. The very next episode with the most OVERUSED trope in all media, "you thought I was doing A, but I was actually doing B" in the most obvious way. Anyone with a brain knew what was happening subtextually and it is just boring. I didn't make it through episode 3, it was not watchable and felt like a waste up to there. Show is way too overhyped IMO. 4/10 I can guess it goes on that they do more boring shit with middle school level "realistic" dialogue and the girl she is training becomes in danger at some point, Freiren saves her and then abandons her for her safety then regrets it, blah, blah, blah. Soooo fresh, so new.

I think S2 of Mushoku Tensei really show how Rudy adapt his new world socially. Back in S1 he take it like a game or simulation, but later on he must be an actual adult with responsibility in his new world. Its like nature vs nurture, where his previous life is his nature and his new life is the nurture. Both have good and bad things.

Demons seem to embodied the shadow . The worse aspect of humans giving form and absolute reign. Demons are there core is the epitome of evil itself or born evil . That is there main and original concept , since ancient times
