pls check the south indian especially malayali actresses ,in many movies actresses are wearing mild to no makeup and colour is not a problem . so pls talk about indian film industries based on just how bolywood is. india is so diversed
I was always shocked by the fact that someone who literally won the title of most beautiful woman in the world would feel the need to change her features. She was always gorgeous. I think the woman who asked her if her nose was natural had absolutely no place in asking her something like this, plastic surgery is too delicate of a subject to just ask about it so abruptly. She was clearly embarrassed.
The particular discussion was plastic surgery and acceptance. It kind of defeats the purpose of being in the forum if you are going to lie about your plastic surgery.
She's never been comfortable with her beauty due to her skin tone. She often talks about her brains opposed to her looks. She often says in her interviews if she's not perceived as beautiful she doesn't mind, she has her education. which is a good way to think but she clearly was not happy or confident in her looks. Even after winning Miss World, the Indian community had issues with her skin. Shes also uncomfortable because of her nose as people didn't like it, and people in the industry often told her they didn't like her nose/ she should consider getting her nose done (which she has spoken about in alot of interviews). She unfortunately fell under societal pressures and got it changed. Even after literally becoming Miss World it is sad to see she never fully accepted how beautiful she really was.
because beauty standards affect and enslave every woman. it makes every woman feel they’re wrong in some way, no matter how much money they have, no matter how many times they are told they’re beautiful.
@@Enigmaticbeacon no she did it for herself, she had already won the world beauty pageant and was already famous, and a lot of actresses don't have a perfect nose look at Meryl Streep, Sandra Oh....
@@ilonat.2421 I don't know why are my replies keeps getting deleted but it's not because it is not a sensitive subject for you does means it is also the other ways for others. The worst type of people are the ones who ruins other people's happiness just because they are made out of bitterness in life.
ilona tsymbalyuk She doesn’t have to answer though because the question was unwarranted. If I was a celebrity I wouldn’t admit to plastic surgery on some morning show if it was randomly asked. I honestly get why celebrities want to keep that stuff private
Not to mention, the make-up artists in Indian Weddings literally paint the bride's face white. Even if you insist on looking natural...they say "oh it is your wedding, you shouldn't look dark". The end result you don't even look like yourself at your own wedding.
Same, I don't like when people go under the knife to change something really insignificant about their nose, it's just not worth the risk. However it's their choice at the end of the day.
I’ve thought of that too because I don’t necessarily love my nose but there’s really nothing wrong with it so I feel like if I did anything then it would just mess up the proportions of my face
The sad thing is that so many white girls are blackfishing. And they get praised for their tan, voluptuous body , just like the Kardashians and black and latinas get shamed
It’s 2020 and I still rarely see an Indian movie in which the female lead is a dark skinned woman... all of what you said in this video is sadly true. The pressure to whiten your skintone is still extremely prevalent. Edit: spelling
Its also sad because they also have whitish features. For example, aishwarya rai is practically worshipped for her blue eyes and white features (not that she isn't beautiful and stunning) whereas a more ethnic and darker girl would be rejected even if she was beautiful :/ edit: I phrased this wrong, Aishwarya rai is NOT in anyway European. However, the proximity to lighter features give her a privilege over a dark skinned woman. A history of colorism in South Asia precedes contact with Europeans (colonization), but Eurocentric beauty standards are mostly an affect of eurocentrism.
Well its true that they always use light skinned people in Indian movies but they dont have to whiten their skin as Indians come in every possible skin shades and facial stuctures
Meena Calaimany Yes, or worse yet, how in the recent movie Bala they gave an actress “black face” when they could have very EASILY cast a woman who naturally HAD that skintone. It was appalling. 🤯
She was SO beautiful before surgery. She is beautiful after surgery, but I honestly feel she was more beautiful before 😥 ... videos like this are really helping me to accept and love myself as I am.
because she was not getting much roles in indian film industry(bollywood) . in beginning she was mostly getting side chick, supporting actress or negative roles. but after her surgeries she was cast in big films opposite big stars of bollywood. no doubt she was highly talented and confident. but surgeries helped her to make her career.
I don't have any issues about people having plastic surgery. What bothers me is when people lie about it. Priyanka has forever lied about any form of plastic surgery, considering she endorses the love yourself the way you are.
When you admit to it she has a lot to lose. She will be forever trolled for being 'plastic'. And there's really an obsession everywhere with being 'naturally beautiful' or ' I woke up like this'. So admitting that she is had help to look the way she does, takes the novelty away from her, which is earning her bread and butter for her by the way. And Priyanka is a really smart woman, she would never do that. She knows what to say when.
I mean look at Mike and Janet. Two absolutely beautiful Black people, but got so much work done. I read in Janet’s book that she hated her smile, and didn’t understand why ppl loved it so much. She said her producer Jimmy Jam asked her to smile cause she looked down, and he said ppl love your smile and she was surprised by that and said “they do”. He said “YES! It’s one of your many beautiful features”. But for someone as gorgeous as she was in the 80’s and 90’s to not see that, is sad. Self esteem issues will rip you a part. Same with Mike.
The skin bleaching practices in India make me so sad. I think Indian women are some of the most beautiful women in the world, and not seeing them embrace their ethnicity is really frustrating. Hopefully the beauty industry can push for all people to embrace their uniqueness!
It makes me sad too; I think if makeup companies start making more shades and having darker toned ladies as their models (in India) they would make more money not less; but for that Indian women would need to demand it by voting with their dollars (not buying non inclusive makeup)
This fair skin ideal is even prevalent in Indian communities out of India. I live in South Africa and Indian mothers will tell their sons get a fair girl and guys will tell you point blank that they don't like dark girls because they don't want dark children. I've lived with this my whole life knowing that I'm not fair so I can't expect anyone to see me as anything more. Bollywood isn't even true to Indians. They keep bringing in people from other countries as well as long as the skin colour is not medium to dark. If you're not fair, then you must strive to atleast be "intelligent" so you have a selling point 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
@@keri471 you are completely right and this is a fact part of Whole Asian culture, not only Indian impacting dramatically all the aspects of the life of people. But about Bollywood i noticed that, obviously they pursue fairness and fair models but that the big stars become big more because of their caste rather than just the looks. Is full of not fair actors in Bollywood, they bleach, they do plastic, they have filters, makeup... But it seems to me that also cinema is more a caste thing in India and when there is someone meant to be in that position they make it look always more fair skinned and caucasoids
@Joselene Lu Some of them wanna look rich enough to afford the holidays in expensive sunny places, some others wanna look "exotic" in their opinion of the concept often including a more sexually aggressive allure. Some others want a "healthier" "sun-kissed" look because often the pale skin is associated to illness or goth culture.
She moved to the West where her tanned skin is more valued. That's what I did too, moved from Asia to the Canada where my tanned skin is celebrated and seen beautiful, even preferred. It makes a HUGE difference to my self esteem and happiness. I realized I've been lied to about my worth when I was in colorist Asia. It's a toxic place where an average looking fair skinned person can get all the opportunities that a beautiful yet tanned skin person can't. Glad I moved out.
@@LorryHill In Asia there's like this barrier - if you don't pass the skin colour test then you'll never be seen as beautiful enough no matter how gorgeous your features are. I heard compliments about my physical appearance for the first time only after I moved out - it was hard to grasp it at first. Moving out 6 years ago was a huge turning point of my life. Now I'm married with kids and never felt more beautiful and happy. ❤️ Thank you for talking about this topic in your video. I'm really grateful.
She was so stunning, SO stunning that she won MISS WORLD with her natural beauty. I’ve been looking around the web for articles about her story. I don’t understand why she felt the need to get plastic surgery and I feel like all it did was cause issues for her in the end. This just breaks my heart.
@@prapanthebachelorette6803 Nope, you are giving her excuses. Priyanka did that stuff to herself, the directors and other people never wanted her to change her nose.
@@marionfrench6403 It's because most pale people in America like to get tans to make themselves appear sun-kissed. It's also really popular now for them to pair up with people that have more melanin so their kids will be naturally tan too.
I loved how you touched the fact that how people in India are not inclusive of all skin tones. As an indian, that's something I have faced before. Growing up I always saw people admiring lighter skin tones and saying bad things about having a darker skin. Which is problematic. So much, that as a kid, I was racist myself, as everyone around me would say all these things. It was in my teenage years I learned to appreciate my own skintone and all the skin tones in the world. The fact that I was racist at such a young age is what scares me. I believe the reason behind this discrimination is the period when the British ruled the country. White people were the ruler of the country for a century. And their slaves were us, brown people and black people. It's really sad to see the damage that has done in so many ways, including people's mentality. The thing with Indian skin tones is that they naturally vary from very fair to very dark brown. I think that's also one of the reasons this kind of discrimination exists. Things are changing now though. Slowly but yes.
Everything you said is so correct! It wasn’t your fault that you thought that way; it became ingrained in you and it’s amazing that you changed the pattern of thought!
To be sure, within the Indian culture, there is a perceived more “admired” skin tone towards lighter skin tones. This holds true throughout the world and even in the country of India. This is probably with the whole world in all races. It is somewhat changing, but holds true in general. My Indian friends that have darker tones were not allowed out swimming during the day because their parents felt that they would get too dark. They had to swim when the sun goes down. Their parents are extremely well educated. This is just a desire within the culture. This has been acknowledged also through some of my favorite professors that happened to be of the Indian culture. Interesting video~~ Your video echoes what I’ve learned from friends and professors.
She looked more Indian before. I was kind of surprised when I first learnt she was Indian. "It's ok to have a dark skin tone as long as you have the perfect westernized features." This is so important! I'm from Haiti and, in families, since we are all kind of mixed because of slavery, we all tend to have different skin tones and it's true that the person with the lighter skin tone and often get praised more but it isn't as obvious as it could be.
You looked so upset and almost emotional speaking about the “skin lightening” trend, all I have to say is that means so much to people like me who are darker skin... thank you soo so much
Hi Jaha; I was upset; it got to me. I had to take frequent breaks from researching it . The unfairness of it all. I really hope things start to get better even if it’s slowly.
While Im not dark skin, I am a Black woman and I can tell you, I don’t tolerate dark skin slander. At all. Ive had to tell a few ppl off about it. Jus cause Im light skin doesn’t mean I don’t care about my dark skin brothas and sistas. Im sorry if you ever felt any pain from our community due to Colorism
Isn't it strange how white women want to be tanned ( or in some cases, even want to look like they're black), yet darker women want lighter skin. Hmmm then you have naturally thin women getting BBL's and breast implants, while naturally curvy women want to be thin- is this an example if the grass is always greener or are we women just insecure no matter what... I know that I would never want a fake butt, fake breasts, fake lips, fake eyelashes, fake brows..I'm not against plastic surgery, but only to improve me, not to be someone else.
Omg finally someone who called it, instead of always placing the problem on racism. Being tanned in the west is another way of saying that you're "superior/happier/more beautiful" because you got time to go on vacation and have relaxation. The only difference is that in the west they are less judgy and direct than asian mentality. It's just all beauty trends
It’s less about that and more about racism. People try to meet the Eurocentric standards, while people with Eurocentric features can basically take from other cultures as they like.
I'm from Mexico and there's definitely a preference for lighter skin tones from what they show on telenovelas, tv series, movies, and just the people in the media in general are whiter. People with darker skin usually represent the "poor" person in a story..
@@LorryHill yeah it's kinda getting better but still if you Google Mexican actresses you get the "sexy latina look" but light skinned but if you compare it with what an average Mexican looks like the difference is obvious
Thank you so much for discussing skin bleaching. I'm a dark skinned Singaporean woman of Indian ethnicity, and back in my late teens my mom would force me to use extremely harsh skin bleaching creams which caused terrible damage to it. She said no one would ever want to date or marry me with dark skin. I eventually made the decision at 21 to stand up to my mom and stop using these products, for my own health, but it came at a huge cost, in terms of my relationship with my mother. Many Indians still have the ingrained belief that dark skin will deprive you of opportunities in your career/love. So I get why my mom was looking out for me, but this belief has got to die. It was great to see a white woman in the US tackle this topic that affects so many dark skinned women around the world. Thank you!!
TheButterflybeat I am singaporean too. My mum is chinese but my dad is indian, so my skin is tan but not dark. I had a dilemma and I tried to make myself look whiter to look more chinese because I felt like I don't look like either race, and also because of media constantly feeding us the idea that dark skin is not ideal. I like my skin now for what it is and i realized how silly I was
Your mother is crazy man!!! Good on you for paving your own way. If people don’t want you because your skin tone then you’ve saved yourself from being with a prick
@@soapy2587 i know quite a few of my chindian friends in sg who have struggled with their physical traits that look more Indian, and honestly it's a real shame. I’m an Indian from Singapore. In Singapore I hardly get any negative comments about my skin tone. My mum and my sis are fair skinned but they have never commented about me being dark or etc. My mum came from a small town in India, when I visited there I hear so many comments about me being dark skinned and them having a disappointed look that I didn’t look like my mum. It’s just sad to see the stigma around dark skin in India. I was young when I visited and I was so affected by it. Now I just take it as a grain of salt when I go over and hear comments of such. I just feel sad that they see dark skin as a negative trait when it’s actually so beautiful.
I'm not indian, but there's this youtuber I love called Anncy Twinkle who is in fact Indian. She always rants about this skin whitening cream that seems to be very popular in India and talks about how much pressure there is to achieve a whiter skin tone. She seems like a very confident girl, but I understand that she hasn't always been very optimistic about her looks (although she's very beautiful) due to her skin tone. I couldn't believe how much pressure Indian women have to bare with because of this issue. It makes me sad because it is so damaging to young people having to grow up thinking they have to change something about themselves in order to fit unrealistic expectations of beauty. All skin colors are beautiful and unique and should be embraced for that. I hope no one has to go through this constant fight with themselves
Andersson G Behar has always been an inconsiderate woman. Someone should ask her if she’s a man or a woman and see how she feels. Was awful of her to be so blunt, awful
When it comes to the US, sure when it comes to skin color, there is more diversity. I dont feel the same about ethnicity. Imo in media or movies, its either A caucasian actress or African American actress. Indians, Pakistanis, Native americans or even Arabs/Varieties of asians arent ever really included and rarely get lead or important roles in movies. Ive heard so many people who even work in film confess that people who play in an asian film will hire caucasian actresses/actors because that will get the movie more attention. Think about it, it was only recently that Priyanka Chopra became a famous indian acress in hollywood, doesnt it seem that given thats its 2020 then why is it so surprising or a wow factor that an indian gets attention in hollywood, that fact that theres a wow factor is a little bothering. In beauty commercials i hardly see a diversity in race as well. All famous movies hardly have the other races i mentioned, Hunger games, Harry potter, Lord of the rings (although i know its based in Europe so thats ok). So sure, when it comes to color, we have a lot of skin in the US showing through, but not when it comes to ethnicities.
Abigale Kirsten this was so beautifully said sis. I agree with you definitely about how varieties of Asians and Arabs don’t get as much limelight. Also me being an afroLatina I can relate because often Latin roles are occupied by lighter skin toned Latino people. Which can hurt sometimes because not all Latino people are light. But I also feel like when it comes to African American roles they are often given to girls of lighter skin tones who are black or ambiguous . The Zendaya’s of the world for lack of better words which don’t get me wrong I LOVE ZENDAYA however when she occupies these spaces all the time it’s kinda hard.
You do realize that south Americans, West asians (middle east), North African and south asians are included in the Caucasian category scientifically???
I think one of the reasons why Asian ethnic groups are over looked is because of cultural and religious reasons. It's harder to be a girl next door Jennifer Lawrence/Margot Robbie/ Emma Stone if your Asian if you are in a religious group eg Hindu or Muslim. A Muslim Pakistani American girl won't be seen as relatable as Scarlet Johansson. Actresses eg Pakistani won't get to play sexual roles or roles that won't be acceptable in their heritage culture. If you are doing a film with an Arab actress the film will be about an Arab character rather than a generic colour blind character. Also Asian and South America have strong film industries so US doesn't feel the need to have as many Hispanic or Asian actresses. White actress are a blank canvass, whereas other races come with pre conceived stereotypes.
I feel this same thing. When it comes to "diversity" in movies and media in general, it usually means "white and black people, light skin latinos if we feel generous" and that's it. Sometimes black actors would even be casted in roles that belong to arabians or asians as a "here's your diversity hire, now be happy and shut up". While Harry Potter and LOTR are frankly the wrong franchises to complain about as you already pointed out( even tho, Harry Potter did have a couple of indian characters, an east asian romantic interest, and a little bit more variety in culture overall), franchises like Star Wars, Hunger Games, Jurassic Park etc, have no excuse. Star Wars for example, has aliens from all over the galaxy, but aside from one(very hated) asian character, I cannot remember any other human character that wasn't african american, white or latino(2 light skinned latino men btw, and one of them a drug dealer🤦🏻♀️ ). It's like with "diversity" towards other sexualities, and then they are all hot lesbians(because straight men find them less offensive) with the very, very rare gay man. That ain't diversity lol
Glad you touched on India and Asia's idealization and destructive pursuit of white/western features. I'm Nigerian and I can tell you, first hand, that this is rampant among all countries where black and brown people are the majority. This is the result of colonialism and deeply ingrained hatred of black and brown features. It may appear that the United States is more inclusive, and I agree that thanks to social media (namely Black Twitter) conversations about colorism (look it up) and diversity have contributed to more "diverse" marketing but, like you mentioned, we are still mostly shown images of "palatable" diversity or images of black and brown people with more westernized features and lighter skin. We still have a LONG way to go. I enjoy your videos and appreciate that you seek to educate yourself.
I agree this is the result of colonialism.।। We were told that we were inferior to whites and they are the real beauty.. So anyone who is fair was considered lucky
As an Asian we don't want too look western but more like Asians that have particular features that occur naturally in Asians. No asian friends of mine want to look western like having a square jaw or big nose it what comes to mind when thinking of westerners. We all come in beautiful shapes and sizes, whoever made the term "western beauty " was probably concived by a white person. That term needs to stop putting Caucasians on a pedestal, you see African Americans with vitaligo that pass for Caucasians so features aren't just exclusive to one race. Tyson Beckford has oriental eyes but is pure blood is another example. When it comes to color white skin in Asia is status symbol, if you look at royalty even in south East Asia they are pale skin though majority of the people are dark or tanned and the rich are pale. I've known ppl from south East Asian who were dark or tanned but when immigrating to western countries turned pale overtime without products due to the weather and change of job occupation.
@@triggahappyyt5420 agreed. If asians wanted western features, they would get bigger noses, not slimmer ones! In China, big noses are a stereotyped trait of white ppl
When I was a kid, I really looked up to Priyanka Chopra in Bollywood movies because she had a darker tone compared to all the other popular actresses. After she switched to Hollywood, where so many are trying to get a tanner "healthier" look, she totally embraced her original tone. I'm so glad for her! Sadly, her switch to Hollywood has meant her absence in Bollywood. I wish Priyanka didn't get all that plastic surgery - her nose was great before. If you're beautiful enough to win Miss World, why change that face? My mom and I have been trying to figure out what she got done so I'm glad you posted this video explaining it! It really makes sense!
I'm indian and what you are saying is so correct. I grew up with the perception of, because I'm darker skinned I must not be beautiful, because time and time when I'd visit India people would make comments like, "you've gotten so dark" and "you used to be so light when you were a baby"
@Winter Pumpkin true, even when she speaks great english and is good at acting, with her procedures she now looks like a million dollars 😍. Surgery done right.
Personally here in the Philippines, having lighter skin is more preferred than having tanned almost brown to dark brown skin. I think it’s because the media here plays a big role in this issue. Celebrities here are almost always sponsored by famous dermatologists to promote the whitening of skin and many harmful and illegal whitening products are smuggled into customs because people here are capitalizing off the Filipinos’ obsession on having a lighter skin tone. I recommend watching a short documentary on refinery29 where almost all the whitening products sold here have harmful ingredients and are prohibited in our country. :((
Im filipiina living in Australia, the very first time I went to Philippine Airport at 14, I saw a mother and daughter with THE PALEST skin I had every seen. It looked so unnatural, they looked like sick vampires. Im sorry but white does NOT = pretty.
It's actually much deeper than that. Remember, we were colonized by WHITE countries for years. The Spanish looked down upon our ancestors and the "mestizas" were considered of high regard. Mixed blooded Filipinos had better standing than pure Filipinos at the time. Then we had Americans come along as well and you just _know_ their influences have stayed because we're quite Westernized. Then we also had the Japanese who may have helped the East Asian stereotypes of small eyes, fair skin being desirable to stay. It's still bad, but celebrating Morenos and Morenas has slowly been improving. We have more brown-skinned celebs now. Local makeup brands are more inclusive It's true, though, that people can still be very colorist and the media plays a big part.
I feel like Priyanka was extremely beautiful in the earlier 2000's than now! Her movies, songs, acting, HERSELF! everything was beautiful. It's a shame she felt the need to have work done.
there is no shame in it. i dont get why ppl like u, with hardly any money, think there is a need to point out about surgeries. it was her personal choice, so she did it. yall talk about surgeries like its a crime.
Well...Joy did not ask the right question. It is her real nose. It's just been altered. That's a very inappropriate question to ask someone on TV and when first meeting.
I was recently speaking to a man from northern India, specifically from Kashmir, who said he wouldn’t ever consider dating a woman with a darker skin tone than him because he would be negatively judged by peers and even discriminated against. He actually estimated the percentage of how light his skin tone was compared to the rest of India. He had an exact number, something like in the upper 15% compared to the rest of India. He told me it made it very hard to date because so many women were ineligible. The discrimination taking place is apparently very severe in India. I tried to reassure him that we’re much more accepting in the United States. He had moved here 5 years ago to become a computer programmer for Nike.
While it is partly true , he is also blaming it on others for his dislike of darker skin girls . Btw what the commentator stated above as to how the skin tone is related to caste and gods is utter bulshit . Indians gods are in all shapes and forms . Many indian gods have darker skin colour , some have blue skin colour , some have elephant heads , some have lions heads . India had discrimination based caste which have nothing to do with skin colour. It's only since the british colonization that white skin tone or anything western is deemed to be better then anything indian in india , skin colour is just a part of it .
@misuzu9254 purity of muslim lines LOL kashmir was hindu and budhisim centre .in 1339 mir shah became the first muslim ruler of kashmir soo i dont what purity you claiming because everyone is converted even Bangladesh consists of 99%dusky to black skin they dont have any resemblance to arabs but they claim themselves to be muslim
@misuzu9254 just say that asian men want white girls it will sum up the purity line is something stupid which they are using because all i see is mixed 😂
@misuzu9254 they all are modern images , this whitewashing of indian gods started in the last 2-3 centuries . Indian beauty standards were always more focused on shringar and we're pretty lenient and different from western ones . Apart from the brahmin who were priests and scholars all other castes including the Kshatriya's the warrior caste worked in the son , so it does not.make sense why the Kshatriya's are pretty fair skinned , also where is the evidence that says majority of the lower caste are dark in skin tone ? Just look at bollywood their heroines barely look indians which is a result of euro centric looks being the beauty standard . You know what this means ? It means being fair is not enough . Most fair or pale indian girls do not look western , they still retain their indian facial features . I am saying caste system is not discriminatory but it discriminates on the basis of your family name and not your skin colour . Colour discrimination is an imported issue .
You hit the nail on the head about India’s view on dark skinned girls ! There are a lot of campaigns across the country that are prevalent now pro dark skin and I hope that in the next couple of years this ongoing situation turns around for the good 🤞🏻 🙏
Asia has an obsession with pale white skin tone. This is due to cultural influence as darker skin tones are often associated with hard labor. I have a fair skin tone and my mom's friends would compliment me for having fair skin. It's sad that fairness equates to beauty here. Skin whitening ads are also very unrealistic and some products would even add the "Korean ingredients" label on their packaging to sell as Kpop is booming since the past decade (and of course the idols are all fair skin).
Im from South East Asian .Growing up ppl always complicate my skin but just because having white skin is prefered ,I dont underatand why we have to bring down tan/brown,dark skin .It really affects self- esteem of some girls. I wish we were taught from young age that every skin tone has its own beauty. When I talk about this situation ,most of ppl dont even agree with me ,that's really a sad and serious problem we have to deal with
I am an Indian and I am fair by complexion. My sister is darker than me. Since we were toddlers, we grew up listening to “You will get married easily, but your sister will be a problem”. My sister had to study more hard, had to do everything more than me… because she had to overcome the extra hurdle of for her skin tone… now that we have grown up, we realise that it’s all so stupid! Now we have children, mine are fairer and her’s are a little darker but we love them equally… all of them are special with their unique qualities …and we never talk about their skin tones or let our relatives talk about it in front of them… times have definitely changed since our childhood, but we as a society in India have a long way to go!
She admitted to lightening her skin when she was a teen and into her 20's. She said she lacked self-esteem and I don't blame her. People who are of Asian and African descent--there still is a an emphasis on lighter skin/garnering more opportunities and looked upon as desirable. I'm glad I had a mother that told me not to bleach. Not everyone has that support/ plus she had the burden of her career. I don't condone what she has done- but I understand it from a similar cultural background.
I'm not one to get easily offended, but that "is that your original nose!?" comment from the interviewer was completely distasteful and unprofessional.
i think it's interesting that a lot of things that are allegedly "flaws" and "mistakes" from her plastic surgery are things that i always thought made priyanka look charming and unique (her asymmetrical lips, her nose). i guess it's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
Honestly I used to judge people who get plastic surgery because I'm happy with everything I have but your videos have made me more understanding and tolerant...having this conversation is important, especially when you highlight the benefits and risks and beauty standards..
Hiii Lorry I love u too!! I'm from Philippines and it's honestly so bad here. You're only considered beautiful if you have a fair skin tone. Kids with darker skin tone are teased from birth. The easiest way to have a career in the entertainment industry is if you have a really fair skin tone and you have eurocentric features. Many of the loved actresses here are half-white. If you're half-white you'll get famous very easily. Getting whitening injections and whitening bars, pills, are all very very popular here even for the common people. Colorism is very rampant in my country and sadly ingrained in our culture. Which is weird because we're a tropical country and it's just very normal to have dark skin. I don't know if we're on our way to talking about this issue and fixing it :/
Korek!
United States I think it’s strange that darker-skinned people try to lighten, and caucasians seek to darken their skin by tanning or spray tanning. Interesting video!
Omg this is so weird!! My mom and I have been really into your videos during quarantine and I just told her “I wish Lorry hill would post a new video” and in the same breath you posted!😂
Why is it when people talk about colorism and hate towards dark skin someone HAS to come saying something along the lines of "-and people in the west tan to be darker, sO sAd. 😞 " (as if only whites live in the west wtf.. )this is literally a conversation about colorism, colonization, racism, and euroectrism influencing the beauty industry and now we have to talk about western Caucasian women wanting a tan. Come on. Tanning isn't nearly as deep as people pretend it to be. Literally just get off these Instagram models pages and you'll notice a difference. You most likely won't be turned down from a date, a job interview, or be disapproved of marrying another white man because you are too pale. You still have your shades of foundations available, mass positive representation, and are still seen highly. Literally 30 minutes in the sun with skin protection is enough. Spare me a sob story about how hard these white women have it being white.
Thank you; you said it better than I ; I always try to explain to people that it’s not an equal comparison and it’s much deeper than pale people feeling like they need a tan; that’s just vanity. Colorism is horrible and soul destroying.

I seriously thought she had a lot more done. I think she's gorgeous and sexy as hell. Also noticed in her baby photos that her mum looked exactly like her in her youth.
I'm Indian but I've lived in the US my whole life, so I completely feel her in terms of the choices she made, but I feel sad that as beautiful as she was, she had the same feelings about herself I do. My mom refused to put sunscreen on me, made me swim in a T-shirt, and constantly chided me for becoming tan, claiming that sunscreen causes skin to darken and that dark skin is fine but for someone who is light like me, getting darker makes the skin look "weird." Both my mom and grandma would pinch my nose and make comments about how they wished it didn't look the way it did when I was an infant, toddler, all the way up til I was a high schooler. That's just the beginning of things my female family members have gone out of their way to comment on and sown the seeds of insecurity. I am so insecure about my nose especially, but I know the risks of rhinoplasty for as big of one as I'll end up with (I have a very prominent dorsal bump and wide/large nostrils) are way too high. My mom now is all about me loving myself for who I am, but those comments as a child have really done their damage already. I really hope this damaging cycle in Indian society stops.
Don’t do it unless you find someone who’s an expert on Indian noses and features. I made the mistake of choosing a surgeon who gave me a pretty but entirely unsuitable nose for my Indian face.
Oh good idea. Tom cruise has had skilled work... Mickey Rooney not so much. There are lots of men who get surgery and i would be interested in how the proportions on men make surgery different. Good suggestion
Can you do a kpop idols or Korean actors /actresses version. Korean beauty standards are crazy but when they high school photos get exposed 😳😳they totally look different

Well I guess in urban India people are slowly progressing, in terms of acceptance, if I may say. Now some Indian companies are doing their bit and adding darker shades in their cc cream and foundation range. Having white skin is still a luxury tho, in many areas. But Bollywood is still stuck in their primitive concept of white beauty😂
Yeah and while the white skin celebs are still stuck in Bollywood, the tanned skin Priyanka breaks barriers and hailed for her success and beauty in Hollywood. She's better off in the West where she's valued.
Could you please consider an analysis on Aishwarya Rai? She was once tooted as "the most beautiful woman" in the world and also won Miss World in 1994. She has had a longstanding career in Bollywood of over 20+ years, and a stint in Hollywood as well. There would much data to work with considering her longevity in the public eye. Thank You in advance. Keep up the thorough explanations!
I was shocked when i went to India and got told how beautiful i was as i was 'fair' .... my parents are indian but i was born in Australia so i had no idea how crazy obsessed they were with it. Our background is also Persian so i guess i don't 'look' typically Indian .... but the focus on beauty on there was so OTT .... The only thing i ever had said to me had to do with looks .....
Same girl! Our roots are the same. And yes, I too get a lot more stares and gazes when I'm out and about. Never understood why, when I was much younger. Yes it is frustrating when all people have to say is about your looks.
I love how amazingly she explained the beauty standard in India , I as an Indian , I didn't feel a bit offended which i usually get when people don't educate themselves enough to talk about whole new and different culture and community .
We gotta talk more about the paradox of dark skinned not being a hinder as long as you have westernized facial traits. That still implies that the whiter you look the better. Can’t begin to say how damaging it is that ethnic facial traits are not celebrated in beauty or in plastic surgery. We all know that what looks good on one person will not fit another, yet we adjust and correct facial features after the same beauty standard.
In asian cultures people do perceive being lighter skinned as being more beautiful, but I would argue that this isn't because of wanting to have more "western features". In fact, I think the western standard of beauty is very different to the asian standard of beauty.
So true. I grew up as Korean in a western culture (new zealand) and was fed beauty ideals about being paler and more fair skinned not to be more western, but actually to be more of the ideal Korean. In my western society, pale skin was actually seen as not as attractive and tan skin was more ideal.
@@addyphoenix2655 No. It has something to do with royalty and wealth. A systen which is deeply rooted in all kinds of cultures. Your social status. Lighter skin = people do not have to work outside in the fields = wealthier = prettier. This standard has existed in the western society as well. Over the time it has changed because the west has gotten so modern a lot quicker than the rest of the world. Now it is the opposite. western society : Tanned skin = you can afford to go on vacation/you have free time and money to spend it OUTSIDE = more wealth = better "standard" = prettier.
Asia is the largest continent and is made up of beautifully diverse cultures and ethnicities. Not all countries in Asia were colonized by the West, but a lot were. Coming from one of those countries, colorism is very much real. My sisters and I were considered “lucky” to have fairer skin. Of course our beauty standards aren’t extremely Eurocentric (darker skinned beauties still got pretty privilege), but a lot of celebrities are half-white or bleached and plastic surgeried their way into looking like they are. People with dark skin and curly hair do get bullied for those traits. Let’s stop acting like Asia is JUST China, Korea, and Japan. Asia is a lot more than those countries.
true, In Indonesia, having lighter skin like porcelaine is still highly desirable... it is not about looking western, as many Indonesians dislike white skin with freckles. They actually love lighter skin like koreans have or yellow skin. But many love smooth brown skin too :-). The bottom line, a smooth healthy-looking skin, but lighter is still perceived as better.
Omg! She looked even more beautiful before the surgery. But she’s still gorgeous though. Same in the Philippines, most actresses are half white, anyone who has white skin is more likely to be featured in movies, the obsession with being white is insane in my country.
I really appreciate the amount of research you've done on the Indian Beauty standards. Everything from the skin bleaching to eating saffron is on point 👌
This would be shocking to many Indians, but my grandma, who's from.. 1946/47 (wow) actually loves my skin tone! I'm on the tan side, so whenever I'm insecure, she always says that tan is Better in her opinion.. andafter learning that India supports white skin tone, I was so surprised because she's traditional, yet she supports tanner shades?
I had 2 nose jobs. One aesthetic to close the tip and refine it.This is why i love my doc -my nose always tipped up, and he kept it, so I'm still me. No-one ever knew! Just thought I'm aging beautifully. I'm 52, and look in my 40's. For every reason Lorry states.
(In 2013)...When my X got psycho and hit me, he broke my nose. So after having it done aesthetically, rebuilt it cos he broke it. And redefined the tip again at the same time. The body needs time to adjust to procedure...and you go from there. We are all works in progress...
Lorry has become my favorite page, I love the positivity she expresses & is never shaming the subject! Favorite RUclips page. I’m in school for nursing & I’m gonna be an aesthetic nurse & there’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel better about yourself. Keep up the great work Lorry! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
1:42 i think before she got anything done, her face was literally perfect. her lips and nose were made for her face. also she already had beautiful big lips. it really made me sad to see her young photos bc ive never seen them before. even tho i def think she didnt need anything in the beginning, clearly she was getting criticized by people or maybe she had body dysmorphia and couldnt realize she was pretty no matter what. i hope she feels better about herself now
As someone who's been watching Priyanka's movies for the past 17 years, I've always wondered what it is that makes her look so different over the years but couldn't totally pinpoint it. You're so perceptive! Idk why she changed her nose or lips at all in the first place.
This was a very informative video! Being a person with a slightly lighter skin tone than the exact brown skin color, everyone always complimented me by saying "you are so fair" some people even said that if they had my skin colour they would be prettier than me. Slowly it made me realize beauty is such a superficial and opinionated concept. Nowadays when someone says they are pretty because they are "fairer" I honestly pity them because beauty is so much more than that.
I'm Chinese and the supremacy of lighter skin tone is also widely present here and not only in the entertainment business. It's quite obvious on social media but I also have many personal experiences. For example, last week I visited some of my relatives (the lockdown was pretty much over) who were born and had always lived in a SMALL town. They had a baby about 3-4 y.o. running around in the yard under the sun, and as soon as the mother realised it she had to put a hat on the baby because she didn't want her to "get tanned" (not because of the risk of skin cancer or what). Also, I studied in the UK for 6 years and during this period I started to feel ok about not having a lighter skin tone as most people from my country wanted. But as soon as I came back home and meet my family, someone would start commenting on the fact that I got tanned (in a negative tone of voice) and it just made me so uncomfortable. Oh and I'm a guy
So many Indian actresses were much more dusky early on in their careers. Unless they move to a place with less sun for years, the drastic whitening is not possible at all unless they bleach their skin.
it is really sad as to how india is so obsessed with skin tones. my brother has been fairer than me. i have had my mom on certain instances tell me that i could get my skin bleached once i was in college. perhaps due to people telling her to get her skin lightened, she feels that way about herself as well. that makes me really sad. it took some time to tell her that i am okay with how i look. i thank the internet for these very reasons. i too was convinced at a point that beauty is being fair. but now i know better. thats not true at all. thank you for mentioning the discrimination that prevails in india. i hope the country transitions out of its obsession with fairness.
I'm from India. Thank you for doing this video. I really love how you tackle the topic of plastic surgery in your channel. I am also an advocate of plastic surgery and I like the way you point out the thing in celebrities. There is no malice or judgement in them. I feel like you must be a very kind person in real life too. Colorism is a real issue in India. I hope our country will be able to overcome it soon. Nowadays people on social media, beauty RUclipsrs etc have shed a lot of light into this topic and it has led to some small but significant ( the earliest steps are the most difficult) changes in the mindset of the beauty and cosmetic industry. I hope this keeps happening because it's not enough, we have a long way to go. Also it's really awful that Bollywood ( that is so huge and influential) has so much power in their hands to be agent of change. Yet they continue to further the narrative that lighter skin is superior 😢 Anyways, I also want to thank you for mentioning the problem of India and still being respectful. Unfortunately a lot of time I have seen western media talking about Indian issues it's always in a very bad tone Always support your channel. Hope you're doing well. Take care

She did it to fit the white standard of beauty of Bollywood and Hollywood.

It’s 2020 and I still rarely see an Indian movie in which the female lead is a dark skinned woman... all of what you said in this video is sadly true. The pressure to whiten your skintone is still extremely prevalent. Edit: spelling
Its also sad because they also have whitish features. For example, aishwarya rai is practically worshipped for her blue eyes and white features (not that she isn't beautiful and stunning) whereas a more ethnic and darker girl would be rejected even if she was beautiful :/
edit: I phrased this wrong, Aishwarya rai is NOT in anyway European. However, the proximity to lighter features give her a privilege over a dark skinned woman. A history of colorism in South Asia precedes contact with Europeans (colonization), but Eurocentric beauty standards are mostly an affect of eurocentrism.
Indians are the most racist towards themselves it's true. There's a lot of self hatred.
I feel like in a lot of nonwhite countries the lead actors always tend to be a white looking ethnic person
Well its true that they always use light skinned people in Indian movies but they dont have to whiten their skin as Indians come in every possible skin shades and facial stuctures

Thank you!!
I’m sorry you had to go through that, your skin is beautiful and there’s so many people that would find you beautiful and want to marry you 🤍
TheButterflybeat I am singaporean too.
Society here really does disproportinately value the chinese physical attributes, but i'm happy you've chosen beauty on your own terms. the moment i accepted my own skin was the day i became free :)
This is what happens if you have shitty priorities and apply them to yourself and your loved ones.
I’m so glad that you see it for what it is; beautiful!
You're gorgeous!

@L A if we're viewing it from your POV then its native Americans' country🤦♂️

That is awful; I’m sorry

Can you talk about PDO thread lifts if you haven’t already? They seem to be the new wave atm.
@@a.jpurple6515 Of course it does not, I've seen plenty of gorgeous dark skin girls
Local makeup brands are more inclusive
It's true, though, that people can still be very colorist and the media plays a big part.
I feel like Priyanka was extremely beautiful in the earlier 2000's than now! Her movies, songs, acting, HERSELF! everything was beautiful. It's a shame she felt the need to have work done.

That is unreal! I don’t even know where to begin with this; just awful!
Havent you all notice, Priyanka has the most beautiful shiny , resilient naturally wavy hair on her head framing that beautiful face
If people could see thru the eyes of others and witness their own beauty, the plastic surgery industry would go out of business.

I'm really impressed that you went into talking about colorism and featurism in media that affects darker skinned people.
You hit the nail on the head about India’s view on dark skinned girls ! There are a lot of campaigns across the country that are prevalent now pro dark skin and I hope that in the next couple of years this ongoing situation turns around for the good 🤞🏻 🙏
Aww me too !

I don't condone what she has done- but I understand it from a similar cultural background.

@isprah ; you’re beautiful!!

Aussie Aussie Aussie
I love how amazingly she explained the beauty standard in India , I as an Indian , I didn't feel a bit offended which i usually get when people don't educate themselves enough to talk about whole new and different culture and community .
Do you think Cara Delevingne has had work done?
I’m from Sudan 🇸🇩 and there is this same issue of colourism in my country. It’s very disheartening to see people place value in their skin tone
Reem Elmahi انتم السودانيين جميلين جدا. بشرتكم مع جمال ملامحكم جداً مميزين ما ادري ليش البعض يغير لونه 💜🇸🇦
Sudan makes some of the most beautiful models I’ve ever seen.
In my western society, pale skin was actually seen as not as attractive and tan skin was more ideal.
facepalm* and where do u think fairness comes from ? white people!!
Same in the Philippines, most actresses are half white, anyone who has white skin is more likely to be featured in movies, the obsession with being white is insane in my country.
mema ka teh, halos lahat ng celebrities dito tanned. next time, alamin mo yung pinagkaiba ng 'white/ porcelain skin' sa 'white race'
I really appreciate the amount of research you've done on the Indian Beauty standards. Everything from the skin bleaching to eating saffron is on point 👌
Non of these procedures made her look better, so unnecessary :(
This would be shocking to many Indians, but my grandma, who's from.. 1946/47 (wow) actually loves my skin tone! I'm on the tan side, so whenever I'm insecure, she always says that tan is Better in her opinion.. andafter learning that India supports white skin tone, I was so surprised because she's traditional, yet she supports tanner shades?
OMG I can't believe Joy asked her that question. You are just the sweetest. I love learning about the nose structure issues.
Who was your doctor? 💓
@@BonniciAlexia omg is he in jail??
Lorry has become my favorite page, I love the positivity she expresses & is never shaming the subject! Favorite RUclips page. I’m in school for nursing & I’m gonna be an aesthetic nurse & there’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel better about yourself. Keep up the great work Lorry! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thank you ❤️❤️🩹
She just looks different. She has a different look. Looking like two different ethnicities. But she’s still a very beautiful woman!
She looks like Janet Jackson
Priyanka Chopra is a natural beauty, I dont think she should've got anything done tbh.
You look especially beautiful and comfortable on camera in this video Lorry!
Aww that means a lot to me! Thank you Brenda!!
it is really sad as to how india is so obsessed with skin tones. my brother has been fairer than me. i have had my mom on certain instances tell me that i could get my skin bleached once i was in college. perhaps due to people telling her to get her skin lightened, she feels that way about herself as well. that makes me really sad. it took some time to tell her that i am okay with how i look. i thank the internet for these very reasons. i too was convinced at a point that beauty is being fair. but now i know better. thats not true at all. thank you for mentioning the discrimination that prevails in india. i hope the country transitions out of its obsession with fairness.
please do LUCY HALE! she’s looks a bit different (still flawless asf though)
Yet they continue to further the narrative that lighter skin is superior 😢
Anyways, I also want to thank you for mentioning the problem of India and still being respectful. Unfortunately a lot of time I have seen western media talking about Indian issues it's always in a very bad tone
Always support your channel. Hope you're doing well. Take care
Hi! Thank you for this thoughtful comment. I consider myself a strong person (to be on youtube ha!) but researching this video made me very disheartened! I do hope that this issue starts getting better as we become more aware of it. Love to you !
How tackkkkky of that woman in the beginning to ask about whether her nose is natural or not. Yikes
