    What cues do you use?

I had a bad habit of 2nd quadrant freestyle. I developed a cue of pretending I had a long rubber band between my hands. My goal is to stretch it as long as I can but not so hard that it snaps. It helps me to keep the lead arm stretched out while I get a full follow through with the pull.

Train tracks, what I believe is the serape effect: right hand entry, left foot kick (is it that?) And the skewer in the spine (for better breathing). Maybe they're not cues, but I remember them from time to time while swimming.

My favorite cue for taking your hand out of the water (recovery), it's a movement similar to taking your cell phone out of your pocket. It's very helpful.

Very great tips lately. Not overly technical and much easier to follow. In the past it was difficult to understand the skills but now that you have related it to simple terms like the rock vs roll, keeping the line, elbow 1st in recovery, soft hands, etc.
    Thank you

this is perfect approach for me, using one word cues for more complex parts of a stroke. 'relax' is a good reminder that i'd tell any swimmer to never ignore but i'm always thinking 'log', to make sure my core is engaged and my hips are involved in rotation. But I might change that to rockin not rolling :)

I’m going to have to watch this at least 5 times probably more ! Thank you Brenton Before the pool opens I spend 5 or 6 minutes playing one of you’re videos , so I’ve got your voice in my head with some you’re cues , this morning keep the kick confined to the space of 2 buckets , train tracks !!! Stand tall stand proud , coin between the glutes hahaha yeah maybe not that one so much ..... but thank you for the music cue you’ve just given me the excuse to listen to all my fave songs!!! Yay

If I haven’t said so already, this is an amazing channel! I’ve learned so much from watching and listening to these videos. When I started my triathlon training I could barely stay afloat and break 2:30. Now I’m doing sub 2:00 which will work just fine for a 70.3! Next week I’ll be filming myself to make sure things look good and further tweak my technique. Thanks!

    Great advice as always!
Some cues that have worked for me in the past or are working for me now as I improve upon my stroke are "lead with the chest/heart" which reminds me to "puff" my chest out and draw the belly button towards the spine for the tall and proud posture. In addition, entering the water "ring finder first" helps me a lot with staying on the train tracks and feeling the pull thru my lats. If i entered the water wide thinking about entering "ring finger first" i felt almost a stretch in the bicep. I can't explain the feeling the lats aspect of it. It just worked for me.

Yet again, absolutely superb tips!! Thank you very much! Your videos have helped me immensely with my freestyle technique. Having never had a swimming lesson in my life, I was like the typical fit athlete that was "gassed" after swimming 50 m in the pool. I can now confidently swim 2000+ metres in a session. Will be doing my first IM 70.3 and feel very confident about the swim. And still looking to improve all the time.

Is this @Andrew Spoor swimming? Love seeing this guy swim, always something to learn. Easy pace, but still looks like 1:00 speed :)
My current cues are one goggle breath to improve my left side, «reaching to grab something on a high shelf» for extension, and especially «stay relaxed» on recovery. Need something for keeping the kick going, now there is a slight pause when I breath with 6-beat.
Most importantly, only one cue at a time for a few lengths.

I have two I use " Take off the sock " on exiting the water to start recovery the water is your sock. As you exit elbow first you leave all the tension in the water and soften the forearm and had.
"Fall into the entry" At your maximum rotation to start going back the other way just fall into it using gravity. It is going to happen anyway and it is another chance to relax and soften as you make your entry.

On music... The first woman to cross the English Channel - the great Gertrude Eberle - had a wind-up gramaphone play 'Yes, We Have No Bananas' and 'Sweet Georgia Brown' to power her across in 1926. Both very stroke friendly. Personally I just hum. All great tips from Effortless Swimming - as usual.

One of the [many] things Im struggling with is rotation on the non breathing side. As I take a breath I naturally rotate as my head moves. But on the other side, I find rotation just doesnt happen as easily and I almost have to 'artificially' force the rotation. I'm reaching out over the water as much as I can but the rotation just doesnt feel 'enough' to help with the catch
