- Cues can be a useful thing to help transform the way you swim. I've found these cues to be the most help.

What cues do you use?
I had a bad habit of 2nd quadrant freestyle. I developed a cue of pretending I had a long rubber band between my hands. My goal is to stretch it as long as I can but not so hard that it snaps. It helps me to keep the lead arm stretched out while I get a full follow through with the pull.
Train tracks, what I believe is the serape effect: right hand entry, left foot kick (is it that?) And the skewer in the spine (for better breathing). Maybe they're not cues, but I remember them from time to time while swimming.
My favorite cue for taking your hand out of the water (recovery), it's a movement similar to taking your cell phone out of your pocket. It's very helpful.
"torpedo burrito" i imagine a burrito is at the end of X distance and i'm a torpedo racing toward it ;)
"Sipping hot coffee" is how I imagine during breathing.
Signed up for a triathlon. Meant I had to learn how to swim. Couldn’t make 50m at my first swim. My 16th swim I did 1,400m continuous at 2:20/100m. If you take these video and apply them you’ll improve 100%.
Good job!
The surface water shape is really beautiful! His swimming is kind of show, truly brilliant.
Very great tips lately. Not overly technical and much easier to follow. In the past it was difficult to understand the skills but now that you have related it to simple terms like the rock vs roll, keeping the line, elbow 1st in recovery, soft hands, etc.
Thank you
It's so helpful & useful, very clear explaining. Thank you for every single video tutorial you've made.
this is perfect approach for me, using one word cues for more complex parts of a stroke. 'relax' is a good reminder that i'd tell any swimmer to never ignore but i'm always thinking 'log', to make sure my core is engaged and my hips are involved in rotation. But I might change that to rockin not rolling :)
Swimming is like dancing! ❤ i enjoy watching your videos! And the accent is particularly awesome! Thank you for sharing!
I’m going to have to watch this at least 5 times probably more ! Thank you Brenton Before the pool opens I spend 5 or 6 minutes playing one of you’re videos , so I’ve got your voice in my head with some you’re cues , this morning keep the kick confined to the space of 2 buckets , train tracks !!! Stand tall stand proud , coin between the glutes hahaha yeah maybe not that one so much ..... but thank you for the music cue you’ve just given me the excuse to listen to all my fave songs!!! Yay
This channel is great! Lots of good tips here.
Thanks for sharing these tips! Most times simplicity makes the difference. Quite useful!
Very helpful! Thanks.
If I haven’t said so already, this is an amazing channel! I’ve learned so much from watching and listening to these videos. When I started my triathlon training I could barely stay afloat and break 2:30. Now I’m doing sub 2:00 which will work just fine for a 70.3! Next week I’ll be filming myself to make sure things look good and further tweak my technique. Thanks!
Great suggestions, as usual. Thanks!
Great summary, thank you Branton!
Great advice as always!
Some cues that have worked for me in the past or are working for me now as I improve upon my stroke are "lead with the chest/heart" which reminds me to "puff" my chest out and draw the belly button towards the spine for the tall and proud posture. In addition, entering the water "ring finder first" helps me a lot with staying on the train tracks and feeling the pull thru my lats. If i entered the water wide thinking about entering "ring finger first" i felt almost a stretch in the bicep. I can't explain the feeling the lats aspect of it. It just worked for me.
Great video, as always.
Thanks.
Since I started to watch your videos I have improved a lot in my swimming technique. It’s incredible! Your video are so useful, easy to understand
This is very useful! Thank you for making this video
This helps so much, absolutely great video! One of the best Ive seen so far. Thank you very much!
One of your best videos! Thanks from Dortmund, Germany ✊🏼😎
I like Wheel333's "fall into the entry". I attach that to "connect" to make sure the fall is powering the first 1/3 of the pull.
Yet again, absolutely superb tips!! Thank you very much! Your videos have helped me immensely with my freestyle technique. Having never had a swimming lesson in my life, I was like the typical fit athlete that was "gassed" after swimming 50 m in the pool. I can now confidently swim 2000+ metres in a session. Will be doing my first IM 70.3 and feel very confident about the swim. And still looking to improve all the time.
Dancing is freestyle where it applies strokes, angles and bends
Thanks for the video. I use "feel the water, feel the water" it's a good reminder that goes with soft hands pretty well. I'll try the "gentle acceleration" one, interesting. Also, the guy in the video' swimming is just beautiful, so smooth. Goals. Cheers
Best Coach! Greetings from Germany.
Thanks for your sharing
fantastic video!!
Отличная тема. Thank u
Is this @Andrew Spoor swimming? Love seeing this guy swim, always something to learn. Easy pace, but still looks like 1:00 speed :)
My current cues are one goggle breath to improve my left side, «reaching to grab something on a high shelf» for extension, and especially «stay relaxed» on recovery. Need something for keeping the kick going, now there is a slight pause when I breath with 6-beat.
Most importantly, only one cue at a time for a few lengths.
My left arm drifts a lot when I take breath and I haven't been able to figure out a way to correct that. Definitely will try 'hold the line'! Thanks!
excellent work
Amazing coach💪🤗🇵🇱
"Train tracks" is what my coach tells me. Even though I feel that I do not cross over my head I still have to improve this.
I have two I use " Take off the sock " on exiting the water to start recovery the water is your sock. As you exit elbow first you leave all the tension in the water and soften the forearm and had.
"Fall into the entry" At your maximum rotation to start going back the other way just fall into it using gravity. It is going to happen anyway and it is another chance to relax and soften as you make your entry.
Hi, great channel. Just wondering what do you use to listen to music while swimming? Thanks
Thank you great cues. What about breathing 2-3-4 which one do you recommend 100 mt and 2km and above long distance
Ladder and soft hands help me today . 🏊♀️🏊🏻🏊♂️ Thanks!
Great👍
Wish I knew these years ago 👌
Lockdown with Brenton is easier! Thanks for this - you rock (and i won't roll anymore ;))
👌🏻
This is great. Wasted 30 years of my life rolling when I should have been rocking.
Smooth/gentle acceleration of the water is crucial.
Rotate the bodyweight into the catch to power the stroke.
Brenton, where is this pool? Looks beautiful.
On music... The first woman to cross the English Channel - the great Gertrude Eberle - had a wind-up gramaphone play 'Yes, We Have No Bananas' and 'Sweet Georgia Brown' to power her across in 1926. Both very stroke friendly. Personally I just hum. All great tips from Effortless Swimming - as usual.
If you are reaching forward to catch (grab) why is it not good for the elbow to lead? thx
Hand on rails
Holding a Beach ball
Hand into a mailbox
Theres a pole trough your body
Coin between your buttox
flappy eklbow recovery ( xD)
Shallow water swimming
Touch the ceiling
You dont look up when walking
Etc.. :P I might have watched to many videos
You are the best coach ! What you say looks simple but Its not . It requires a lot of training . One of my big problem is to enter first my hand into the water . I always enter my elbow first .
Oh, it IS simple, but not easy to attain!
So many athletic movements (golf swing, running stride, ski turns...) are elegantly simple when performed by experts, but they take lots of strength, coaching and practice to achieve.
I use "train tracks", "relax" (upper back) and "head spear". My head wanders to the non-breathing side- Trying to break the habit.
Dude I have the same Speedos. The coolest! Can’t find new ones now. So Speedo: If ya lurking around here: Bring back these Speedos!
NB: Thanks for another fine video. Off to the pool now :-)
I go “ RAPGOD” mode in 50 free😂
Left arm seems inclined towards to the surface comparing right arm?
Both hands are "planing" after entry which is creating resistance. This stroke can be improved a lot
One of the [many] things Im struggling with is rotation on the non breathing side. As I take a breath I naturally rotate as my head moves. But on the other side, I find rotation just doesnt happen as easily and I almost have to 'artificially' force the rotation. I'm reaching out over the water as much as I can but the rotation just doesnt feel 'enough' to help with the catch
Do u bilateral breathe? I finally forced myself to breathe every 3 strokes and I feel like I rotate on both sides better now.
In 2 beat kick I started to imagine that whole phase starts not with the catch but with the kick, and this kick propels rotation and pull. Helped a bit to coordinate whole phase. But I'm far from perfect ;)
@@jeenjeanjeen Definitely, bilateral breathing, every 3 strokes, made my rotation improve significantly and more natural.
Try Unco drill!
I finally differentiated that this swimmer breathes as he is pulling through the water... I have been breathing as I bring my arm out of the water and bringing it forward again. Is one way better?
I made gains from this video - THANK YOU! I went farther, faster and easier.
Your kicking beat is like 1234_1234_ instead of 12341234
kick faster during the breathing strokes.
I know why. but Is that a good idea? Thanks.
Why no breathing L/R alternate?
Why I get short of breath while swimming ? Every time I reach deep end , I get nervous and I stop swimming
Ladder
should I breath every stroke?
No! No one swims freestyle like that.
@@KeithHiew Sorry Keith lol, I meant every other stroke. ( One Pair of strokes)
Finger position looks too high relative to the wrist.
easy speed for me is opening a 100 in 28seconds EASY... and then trying to break the 27 second mark in the 50!!!
I do a shoulder led recovery.
