- The US National Weather Service says nearly one half of the population of the United States is under an active heat warning. The west of the country is experiencing record temperatures - with Las Vegas at almost 49 degrees Celsius this week.
And it's been a similar story elsewhere in the world, where experts say climate change is causing heat waves to grow more frequent on practically every continent. The World Health Organization has found that extreme temperatures cause more deaths worldwide than any other weather-related factor.
So with more and more people all over the globe being exposed to sustained heat - we take a closer look at the risks.
For more on this, we talk to our science correspondent Derrick Williams.

We must also consider the consequences of extreme temperatures on other species. We are currently in a biodiversity crisis also with many ecosystems beginning to collapse
That is the major concern
We are Nothing without them
We must seriously consider species like fungi. At the moment, fungi cannot survive if the host's temperature is over 94 degrees. And for a long time, there have been no reasons for fungi to evolve to be able to withstand higher temperatures. Well, now there is reason to evolve. If they evolve to withstand higher temperatures, any one of them could be capable of burrowing in our brains and taking control, not of millions of us but billions of us; puppets with poisoned minds, permanently fixed on one unifying goal, to spread the infection to every last human alive by any means necessary. And there are no treatments for this, no preventatives, no cures, they don’t exist and it’s not even possible to make them. And if that happens, we lose
its over imo
We're starting to suffer now from our over consumption and the belief that the market will solve everything. We need to do something and the working class can't be the only ones who bear this responsibility, the middle class and rich people gotta step up
You are absolutely right 👍🏻
We need to normalise the use of handheld umbrellas in the sun.. I have started to use one and it really helps
Amazing
It’s not going to help if you’ve exceeded the wet bulb temperature your body can handle.
I’ve been using sun umbrella since I saw them in India and Nepal. Ones with a reflective silver liner work well, makes a huge difference!
Haha… Its called a parasol. People in Japan and Korea use them daily in the sun
I started using one when I lived in NYC, and it's a huge help here in Los Angeles where there are no trees near where I live.

I have taken out several trees in my back yard, as they make a LOT OF work in the fall, with raking leaves and they host a whole ecosystem of plants around the bottom of the tree and their roots!

Ever since I was a teenager I didn’t understand why I got so depressed and angry during the summer, I didn’t know heat could actually affect your mental health like that. I thought it was just my personal issue.
No, crime actually increases during the summer months in the USA. I try to stay inside during the summer months. I only like coming out in the spring and fall.
I'm irritable when it's hot outside, I can't concentrate, have no appetite, just drink water and go to the bathroom. Last week here in California, it started to reach 78/79F, I can't focus, I felt nausea, had headache when I was between the heat outside and enter cold indoors, especially in the freezing supermarket.
I have told people for decades that I can't stand the heat. Even 75° Fahrenheit makes me sick. I get dizzy, nauseous, my body feels heavy, I get very angry, and I can't concentrate. I am a 34 year old female, about average weight, and my husband even mentions quite a bit that my body can be like a furnace at night. I think my body just tends to run hot. I don't know if it's genetics or not but I have fantasized about moving to Norway or even Alaska. Montana is too hot in the summer.
@@PrincessSlaya758 Try living in the Carolinas... we would take a 75 degree any day during the summer. That's our spring and fall temperature. I remember in 2020 during the pandemic, in the month of May, there were highs in the 60s and 70s all month. It was so weird, because those are unusual temperatures for us during that month. I loved it. I would love to move further up north, but not too far, because I don't like long, brutal winters, either. I prefer to have 4 distinct seasons.
@@KtotheG yeah it's 94° today and the smoke is thick from all the wildfires surrounding us. And our spring was long and it was cold and rainy for longer than usual but I LOVED it!!!!! I have lived here most of my life and so the long snowy winter is something I'm use to but it can get very frustrating having to deal with 3+ feet of snow and -20° temps. But some months the winter isn't horrible. If I had the ability to control the seasons I would make it spring and fall all year round. Screw summer and screw winter.
Don't forget the animals in the heat..keep them cool and in shade.
You must factor in humidity. Wet bulb temperature changes things radically, especially at higher temperatures.
Exactly, this is something that has to be considered. Here in the southeast US, where I live we've reached 99°F so far in regular temperature, but that's like 113 (that's not exact, just a rough estimate) in wet bulb temperature. When I went to visit a western state a few years ago it was somewhere around 95-99 the whole time but to me it felt like it was in the 80s because the humidity was so much lower. It's like a rainforest here and that makes a huge difference. If you can't sweat and have it evaporate, you're in trouble.
You mean Florida… Humidity is a fact of life.

I have had to reduce my Prozac as a consequence of Heat, particularly Humidity, as I was struggling to sweat ie to regulate my core temperature
Which is a consequence of taking Prozac
I am at high risk for Heat Stroke because of my meds
The alarming thing is not many people realise that their Meds might make them more at risk
Depends on the doctors; in my case (blood cancer) the oncologist and the cardiologist check the weekly tests, adjust dosage and advise on what to do and what not at the peak of the summer. We did quite a few changes when the temperature warmed up in late June - cutting down the least essential meds and minimizing blood pressure intervention.
Exactly, a lot of people don't realize this. It's generally not listed as a side effect. The most important medication I take is an anti-epileptic/mood stabilizer and I literally cannot decrease my dose or I risk becoming manic/psychotic. I can reduce the other 3, but this one absolutely must remain at this dose and it makes me extremely sensitive to heat. I'd rather get heat exhaustion than have a manic episode so I just deal with it the best I can, but not everyone has that luxury. Like people in jails and prisons. That's a huge issue there (at least in the US).
I hope you make it through this summer with the least amount of suffering possible.
Yes, psych meds are no joke when it comes to thermoregulation. I had heat stroke when I was 25 during a heatwave because I had gastroenteritis and couldn’t keep fluids down. That combined with extreme heat and my meds forced me to go to the ER.
@@filippo8189 I have now been able to half my meds so I am suffering less. Also I have a Dehumidifier now and I also add Electrolyte tablets to my water which all make a difference

Thank you so much for speaking out about the many effects this type of heat can begin to have on a persons brain!! Even completely healthy, active, hydrated adults who are careful don't seem to realize the potential damage they are doing to themselves; just because you avoided heatstroke or a hospital visit doesn't mean you're completely dodging damage. I grew up in Texas and had to leave because of the heat (2023 was my hard limit on 100F+ temps), the level of apathy and business as usual as it just keeps getting worse amazes me. People traveling to Death Valley, CA to smile and take a pic next to a temp reading of 130F or higher while their own brains are cooking in their skulls. 🤯
Yes! Even people with high anxiety feels it getting worse from the heat
Last year in Freiburg (Germany), I had multiple weeks of no sleep nights due to heatwaves. My 20 sqm apartment heat up quickly and the minimum temperature did not go below 27 degrees for 10 days in one case, keeping me awake until 5-6 AM, being force to use up 2 weeks of my vacations because I couldn't go to work. I suffered anxiety attacks and was at the brink of hospitalization. That's a torture method in poor countries.
27C... fine for me if the humidity isn't high. It's well above +30C in the shade outdoors in my city, at last, but inside temp wouldn't rise above 25C (unless I shut down all forced ventilation which would indeed make it unbearable). Can't wait to catch the last bits of precious heat... this summer will be over in a few weeks.
Thats a typical German problem because of regulations demanding high isolation standards on buildings. Fine and energy saving in winter, but in summer the building will not lose the heat it collects during the day. My bedroom has two outside walls eastbound and southbound, so sun is on for
most of the day. I need huge ceiling fan to make that bearable. So, as we are trying to save the planet in winter, we are suffering from this useless attempt in summer.

Wearing linen helps, even cotton is too hot at 40C. We’re well into the second week of a major heat wave where I live. I have to spend all my time in my room with a window AC unit, it’s over 35C in the rest of my house. I haven’t left the house since the heat wave began, I just can’t face getting into my 65C car. In Texas we are used to 105-113 mid Summer. Its only in the mid 90s now. This is nice a cool for us. I work outside and am of Northern/Western European decent; acclimatization is necessary for both hot and cold weather. If a person is in AC the majority of the time, they will never acclimatize and thus have a far worse reaction in the heat. A person can think of it like training. Additionally, just because you say heat waves are happening all around the world, I am not sure that has been any difference in the last 100 years outside of the cities and heat islands, I think most people just didnt have a choice nor care. What would looking at the temp before they went to work do? Depress themselves? Train the body, train the mind, and train the spirit always to endure.

6:12 every time he says " as the mercury rises" i thought he meant poisoning in the blood or something .. briefly I thought he was an astrologist .. finally i realized that he is referencing back in the day when thermometers had liquid in them
38 degrees celsius for 15 days here... 🥲
Most libraries has free filtered water stations, we can fill out our bottle and use the PC or find a table to do some work with free AC. The libraries are the designated cool zones.
A person HAS to be SPIRITUALLY and mentally strong
Is there anyone in the comments who take global warming seriously?
Your global warming is caused by the green agenda = solar farms are just one example.
Welcome to Australia
no thanks. i have had enough desert SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN HEAT ... to last me 1000 years
Same in Arizona. Months and months of 45 C +. I’m losing my mind
It was terrible in Brazil the last spring and summer 😓 finally I have some winter time but in the north of my country is always summer
Prepare for average summer temperatures of 55⁰C.
Lol no
where? not here in sweden lol
Ys, 58 C feel in Pakistan 🇵🇰 😢
@@drmustjab Not maximum, but average. And not only in Pakistan.
@@dubsar I supported ur above 55C summer temperature.
Fun fact, if 50C is maintained for weeks at a time year after year, nothing will survive.
Basra, Iraq. We reach 51C+ every year here
@@richardbulva For how many consecutive days?
@@MrLoobu usually 7-14 days. When it's extreme we can get up to a month of 47-52C
@@richardbulva My god. You are stronger than I am. Id probably off myself.
@richardbulva Must be super low humidity at least right?
38C today here in Montenegrin capital. It's our suntaning temp. 😅 But we did have few days of 40C already. Luckily AC in the living room and 2 strong fans in my bedroom are doing a good job.
Now imagine a week of constant blackout... shivers.
@@yarpen26 That would be pretty crazy. Luckily it never happened here in my life. Even electricity going out for half an hour is very rare here.
I live in Bulgaria. There is a small store infront of my flat and many customers leave their cars with engines on until they shop in the store. And this is everyday summer spring fall and winter. I can't understand why.
I hate noise too but what does it have to do with the temperature?
Die Übersetzerstimme bei verschiedenen Personen - am besten ist's beim ersten, dem 72-Jährigen, der im Kofferraum sitzt! 😂😂
I had to get get central AC installed. I live in Canada
Is this why we observe what we observe in the differences between people close to the equator vs those from further away?
Im incredibly heat intolerant. This looked interesting because I can relate to the info, but now im just stressed out ☹
It’s getting hotter every year. Where I live it’ll get into the high 80’s low 90’s but instead got hit with over 20 days of triple digit temps.
Bruh I literally live in Baja, and because of the heat I'm planning to move North next Month, if you read the NCA5 report then you can just see how worse is gonna get.
I love Baja, but in March. Not sure why people would want to be there in summer?
It's so much worse when it's humid... My city (Moscow) is notorious for high humidity levels, and the temperature (30+ C) is ridiculously high. It's almost impossible to sleep at night because it feels like I'm being cooked alive. I can't even imagine what it's like in the US 😢
has anyone noticed depression? Lately when I wake up and feel how hot it is (we're had mid to upper 90's and high humidity for weeks now, I feel very depressed
The heat index was 115F/46C last week. I don't have ac in my car and rely on small accessory units at home to keep cool.
I remember being 10 or 11 and seeing the thermostat (not heat index) hit 110F/43C. I'm 27 now. This is a completely different heat. The sun feels so much hotter...
It's 27 degrees celsius right now and I am uncomfortable
