  • Stick with us here. This one takes a bit of working out. BMW will sell you a four-door 3 Series but gives the two-door Coupe and Convertible versions a '4 Series' badge. So far, so good. If you want five doors in a compact executive model of this type from BMW, it's a little more complicated. There is a five-door 3 Series - the 'Gran Turismo' model - but very few people buy it. One of the reasons why is the existence of this car, the 4 Series Gran Coupe. Here, you get much more stylish five-door practicality, with all the usual 3 Series good bits underneath.
These days, those good bits also include a rejuvenated range of petrol engines, plus the option of xDrive all-wheel drive and, with this recently revised model, smarter styling too. In short, it looks like there's most of what you're going to need here. Let's check this car out.

The only comprehensive review I’ve seen on the F36, thank you!

I've owned this car for half a year now and it is such a great allrounder! It's great as a daily driver and only car for my family with two kids. I used to own two cars: a practical family wagon and a Z4, but this car combines cool and practicality in one. I love how it looks and turn around to look at it every time I park somewhere. I take unnecessary detours just because it drives so well. I can't agree more with the options recommended in this video: in "normal" mode it is a comfortable family cruiser, but in sports+ mode it really delivers the sporty BMW ride that I love so much. Thanks for this review!

Hi I know this comment is late but could you tell me about the cost of maintenance of this car? And what to watch out for when buying used?

@@samshippuden7557 hi Sam, costs depend very much on where you live. In general it is a reliable car. BMW’s of this generation and tend to get leaking oil gaskets and seals. For cars with a higher mileage I’d check this in the maintenance history. Further I like to see changed gearbox oil for cars with an automatic gearbox.

Great and thorough review 👍 personally I love the lower look - hated the 3 series GT, so ugly at rear - it reminds me of that Jenson Interceptor from the 70’s... the F36 it has the sleek look of the saloon yet the practicality of a hatchback! It’s a great looking car - never had a saloon because I’ve always needed a big boot - always had hatchbacks and then later estates, this is a car I could more than live with - I want one... badly!

Well, this _is_ your opinion but I find the 3 series GT to be far more ''special'' and stand-out than this. I mean, it's basically a slightly better-looing 3 series but I prefer the fully flat front grilles anyway. Not the ''step'' design here (and in many other sport trim models.) I just think it gives this car a dated look. The new 2021 4 series GC though: now _that's_ a properly special car. Large aggressive yet totally upright & imposing grille. They've nailed it with this model's successor!
