The fact that the water piston is a sticky piston by default is sort of correct as water ( or any fluid in general ) are sticky ( for how much is depend on fluid type )

For part 2 you should make a mod that randomizes the properties of every block in minecraft randomly. For example, an oak block that acts like water, or a skulk sensor that is a sponge.
I would love to see someone make a functional contraption with water pistons.
1. Make every block burn and burnable
2. Make every block frost walker reactive, and make ice act like sponge or redstone block or something
3. Make every block different redstone things, and place a redstone block
4. Same as 3, but every block also activates redstone
The sponges that can absorb themselves are literally langton ants 💀
Video idea: make every block fight and kill each other like battle royale and see which block remains alive in the end
Ideas for part 2: Give every block a spawn egg, replace nether blocks with end blocks and end blocks with nether blocks or make liquids flow UP.
Where all the things are tnt looks like so much fun! You should make that a data pack

Hmm… what if you made water and lava behave like redstone blocks, but they still retain their original properties? This means that lava powered redstone circuitry could work, save for the fire hazard. On that note, could you also try making redstone dust set everything around it on fire like lava?
