I love how you teach us the opening in a systematic manner. Not rushing with the theory, just little by little explaining us the moves and how it came to be.
Excellent video. I usually open 1.Nf3 & only use the KIA if Black replies c5, as 2.d4 might lead into the Hedgehog Defense which has a solid reputation at for white often requires long careful maneuvering to have any hope of bringing home the full point. By transposing to a closed Sicilian/KIA structure I switch away from d4 openings to an e4 opening & avoid all the prep of Hedgehog Def aficionados & get a playable game on turf I’m more familiar with. NM Ramirez’s excellent video series on the KIA have been a blessing as they’re always easy to follow and chuck full of positional and tactical pointers. This is one of the very best channels out there for consistent well-made content. Bravo!
Many great chess teachers out here, but I think you’ve got the best pedagogy of them all. I’m a teacher and you really know what works for learning new information. The clear explanations, the repetition, and especially the review! Thanks Robert!

What an awesome guy and teacher, thank you very much this video it's amazing! I am new to chess and plan to learn the King's Indian Defense and Attack so I can try to improve with just one opening on both sides and not get bogged down by all the different openings. This is the best video I have seen on the King's Indian Attack. Thank you!
only learn these side line opening when you are at least 1200+ (just 8 to 10 move and the idea) and get more serious when you r at 1800+ , if you are not that high as i noticed , you should only play normal opening like italian or something
Learn the Italian, the bishops opening, the two and four knights, and also the traps and tricks like the fried liver, the cotage trap, and the traxxler. After that, learn your pawn structures, and read a endgame book, learn your endgames well, opposition, pawn islands, and how to manuveur your king. Your king becomes a piece when exactly in a game, and also learn your squares, which squares are weak, strong etc. Learn all of your chess tactics, like skewers, pins, x rays, etc. Learn how to outpost your knights, and also learn to calculate all of your pieces each move, and opponent, and move on then to the Vienna opening and also the King and queen gambits. Then move to the scotch, and grandprix . Go on from there write this down I am trying to help you saying you are 800 elo
You need to practice tactics and after every move of your opponent ask your self what if anything are they threatening. Do that and soon you will be crushing these random attackers.

Using Czech pirc and KID as black was the best opening that you taught us and i am still using continuously and mostly winning but now with white pieces apart from other openings like e4 this i feel like is one of the top opening and people are still not habituated with this opening at my lvl near 1000-1100 guess i have to see how far i can go with these openings and and additing variations accordingly. Really really i like you so much.. You take alot of time to exiplan al the game to us whitch gives us more imformTion and help us alottttttt i cant discribe my feeling to find a great channel like this😭❤️❤️✌️
4:14 - instead of going c5, would it be dangerous for White if Black did dxe4? This is the sequence i had visualized. 4. Nf3 dxe4 5. dxe4 Nxe4 With this, Black is up with a pawn. If White decides to go Nxe4, then Black can go queen to queen and White loses castling rights. Is dxe4 a good choice?
Hello! Two things about that. If they give us a knight for the e4-pawn, we are happy to take it even if it means leaving our king in the center. Likewise, castling is not so crucial once queens are off the board 👍
@@NMRobertRamirez Oh i see. My bad. I was too concerned about the castling rights. I didn't realize i got a Knight for a pawn. 😅 Thanks for clarifying.
I do play chess before. I don't know much about it. I tried to learn but I am struggling. I don't like to play e4 for white. I also try playing caro kann against e4 but something off when playing caro kann and I always get crush in opening stage. But Your videos of Pirc defense are very helpful. I think this opening suit me and it is going to be my main opening for black just like you. King indian attack for white get me some success. I will also try king indian defense against d4. I think similar concept help to cope many situations. Thank you very much for details explaination. It is very helpful for a novice 1100 player, me. I will learn and research pirc, king indian attack and defense.
First of all, I'm not a Grandmaster. But I am a big KIA fan. What i like about the KIA is that not only is it a great opening in its own right, it can also dovetail into other systems, which is important if you play tournaments and your games end up in databases. You might need a White opening repertoire rather than one predictable system. So 1. Nf3 c5....you can go into an English wth 2. c4. After 1. Nf3 d5 you can play 2.c4 and a Reti. Some opponents will hold their centre pawns back so you could play Nf3, g3, Bg2 and in some cases d4 & c4 and have a Catalan. Very flexible - I have noticed some strong players will play 1. Nf3 d6 and go for a e5, f5 (a Philidor Defence like structure) and try and open the f-file for their Rook. I've not had good results against this and so started playing 1. Nf3 d6 and then 2. d4 - don't give them what they want.
A big thank you! The KIA saved me from so much trouble from the Caro-Kann. I have HORRIBLE win rates with Caro-Kann as white, and KIA is way better! Thanks!
question at 9:22 you say we can move the d2 knight to d4 however if backs queen takes QxQd1 then Rxd1 doenst Nxe4 happen and we're down a pawn? because Re1 knight can move back an everything is protected? please correct me if i dont see something or if theres some kind of positional advantage to it?

I got a chance to play this opening vs a 2900 rated bullet player and he trounced me 10-1 :P, the one game I won was a dirty flag and I was down a piece in that game. He basically premoved the entire game. It was kind of insane. Though Opperwezen usually is :P It is a good setup but I think it is too passive vs 2600+ players on lichess.
Looks like my old set-up when I was playing in high school thirty years ago. I had no idea that Bobby Fischer used it (or who he even was back in those days). It just made sense to me and worked quite well in my matches.
There you go, Jamie. I bet you can still use it like you used to thirty years ago. The ideas in this system have not changed much, which makes it a reliable weapon throughout the years. With that said, I hope you learned some new ideas from this lesson 👍
@@NMRobertRamirez I did! And it's funny since one of my teachers from the old chess clubs days once told me that I was the only player he had ever met who played offensively by playing DEFENSIVELY. Again, it just made sense to me, and I enjoyed watching my opponents wreck themselves upon that king-side iron wall.
@@jamierife7789 it is interesting that it came naturally to you. It must have felt good when you found out your system was already such a powerful weapon in the professional Chess world.
@@NMRobertRamirez Indeed so! It served me well when I was playing back in those days. I'm more or less an intuitive player since we never had access to any chess books in our school or public library, being in a rural community. So I had to figure it out myself and never knew there was any such thing as "chess theory" and such.
Ever thought of doing a Chessable course on the KIA? ....you could probably cover it in a couple of hundred trainable lines and its a great opening (with 1 Nf3). I've been playing it since I was 17 I'm now 72! Cheers Michael.
Great video and really enjoyed the walkthrough of Fischer's games. Definitely going to add this to my 1.e4 repertoire. Currently I'm playing the Mengarini variation vs. the Sicilian but this looks more solid--especially against better players.
My pleasure! I think some main differences are the way you get to it. For instance, if Black plays the French, the Vienna might not be so effective. Also, the middlegame plans. You will not see that Bf4 and h4 in the Vienna for example. Hope this makes sense 👍
Thanks a lot for your comment, Lynch! Feel free to check out the other lessons on the King's Indian Attack. I even created a KIA playlist in my channel where I put all of them together 👍
I'm surely going to try that as white. Thank you for the video. If I understand correctly, if they find time to push e5 before we get there, then the plan changes: trying to open with d4?
Hey Laurent! If you do try it, let me know how it goes. I did not talk about what to do if Black does e5, but you are right: we can do c3 and d4. Anyways, soon I will show you other ways to deal with Black's e5 just for you to have options.
Just an awesome and very helpful video! I played e4 and italians and now i am bored with it...it helped me reach 2000 though...so wanted to learn a nice system against everything...hence i think this is just perfect for me...would you recommend any books regarding the opening?
Hello Aryan! Glad you liked it! I learned this opening by reviewing games and using Chess encyclopedias like I covered in lesson # 72. I do not know what book is good, but I am sure you will learn from any book now that you are getting started. If you find a good one, please let me know 👍

Btw did you watch the Nepo vs Dubov match from Magnus invitational, yesterday? It was an Austrian attack if I am not mistaken. :) Love from India.
Hello! Nice to see you back 👍 I just saw the game after reading your comment. I told Nepo to play 5..., c5 and he did not listen 😅 Nah Dubov is just an exceptional player!
as a new player around 830 ELO, would you suggest becoming familiar with this opening or stick with the London which is the only one I know? ty for your excellent work!
NM Robert Ramirez is my favorite chess instructor, but something's missing. When you say 3.Nd2, explain why--because us C players don't know why, and knowing why prevents an out-of-order move. The reason is so that if Black plays ...dxe5, White can play dx35 without allowing Black to trade queens.
Are you going to do the Kings Indian Defense against 1. d4 in the future ? Do you teach this defense in your members content ? I am thinking of joining because i dont have a good core defence against d4. Thanks.
Robert, thank you very much. I was wondering if you have any suggestions -- or games to point me to -- for playing the Kings Indian Attack when Black plays a kind of reverse London system, and puts his Bishop on f5.
Hello! I am sure we have had lessons where I have played against it, but I am not sure now. I will let you know if I find it or any games online. With that said, what I do is that I play it the same way I play the King's Indian Defense vs the London. And since I am White I am one tempo ahead. Feel free to check out lesson # 87 and let me know if it helps 👍 ruclips.net/video/VA2Iro7AkOM/видео.html

Hello! Time flies indeed. Thanks a lot for all your support 🙌 See you on Saturday...maybe we can play a game live 👍
@@NMRobertRamirez look forward to the livestream - maybe I will play in 2022 once my new repertoire is learned!
amazing as usual ✌️✨
Thank you, Arko!
Chess club at Edison Tech High School in Rochester, NY is off to a good start due to your coaching videos. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for sharing this great news! 🙌👍
How does this opening compare to the Vienna (besides just the knights flipped)? Thank you for sharing so much knowledge!
My pleasure! I think some main differences are the way you get to it. For instance, if Black plays the French, the Vienna might not be so effective. Also, the middlegame plans. You will not see that Bf4 and h4 in the Vienna for example. Hope this makes sense 👍
Such a good video. Learnt a lot. Would love to see some of your KIA games as well
Thanks a lot for your comment, Lynch! Feel free to check out the other lessons on the King's Indian Attack. I even created a KIA playlist in my channel where I put all of them together 👍
Great explaining, I feel like the plans are complex and it depends a lot on what the opponent plays, is my perception wrong?
I'm surely going to try that as white. Thank you for the video. If I understand correctly, if they find time to push e5 before we get there, then the plan changes: trying to open with d4?
Hey Laurent! If you do try it, let me know how it goes. I did not talk about what to do if Black does e5, but you are right: we can do c3 and d4. Anyways, soon I will show you other ways to deal with Black's e5 just for you to have options.
very well done...thank you Robert...
You got it, Gavin! Thanks a lot for your feedback 🙌👍
Great video! One question for you Robert. What do you play with white after 1.Nf3 f5? Do you also play KIA vs the Dutch defense?
What about KIA vs Caro Kann? 1. Nf3 c6 2. g3 d5 3. Bg3 etc (as opposed to 1. e4 c6 2. d3 d5 3. Nd2)?
Fantastic lesson!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
I just won my first game with this opening on Lichess. Thank you for the lesson. 😊😊
💪😎 congrats!!
I prefer starting with Nf3 over e4, because i seen how with e4 the game ends up in another universe that i did not prepare for
Bro you insane ❤️much love
hahaha
Eagarly waiting for this, hoping next will be Stafford gambit😀..btw thanks for all the amazing contents ❤️..
😅Not sure if it will be next, but we will be covering it at some point 💪
@@NMRobertRamirez okay!,thanks ❤️,all of your lectures/tactics/openings are best....😎
@@insydenit9158 thank you!! 👍
KIA does work against the Caro-Kann also!
Very nice video!!! I think it will help me a lot in my openings
Thank you, Lazaros! I hope it does. Let me know if you have any questions 👍
thank you very much for this.
Love this vid my guy
Just an awesome and very helpful video! I played e4 and italians and now i am bored with it...it helped me reach 2000 though...so wanted to learn a nice system against everything...hence i think this is just perfect for me...would you recommend any books regarding the opening?
Hello Aryan! Glad you liked it! I learned this opening by reviewing games and using Chess encyclopedias like I covered in lesson # 72. I do not know what book is good, but I am sure you will learn from any book now that you are getting started. If you find a good one, please let me know 👍
Can a repertoire for a 1300 consist of Kings Indian Defense, PIRC and Kings Indian Attack?
Hello! Good question. Please, click on this link to see exactly where I answer this question. It might be easier to understand than reading a long reply. Hope it helps you 👍

@@NMRobertRamirez wow thank you for this awesome response and sending me the exact moment in the video where you discuss this!
Great stuff
Sir Robert can you have Indian defense for Black pieces Bec I play more black side like your Pirc is really good
Hello Joseph! Of course we will cover the King's Indian Defense soon. Stay tuned 👍
Thanks dear
Great video what is the best response for white when black plays e5 on an early move ?
9:25 if they push e5
Thanks
My pleasure!
I learned alot sir
Great content ty
👍
It has been quite sometime, since I could watch your videos. Missed a lot. I am going to watch sequentially on the king's indian series, starting with this. So excited for this! Thank you so much!
@@NMRobertRamirez Nepo missed your video lesson hehehe. Cheers!
Hola maestro, explicas muy bien, algun libro de esta apertura?
d5 - 11:34
d6 - 21:26
this is awesome!!!!! thank you so much!!!
as a new player around 830 ELO, would you suggest becoming familiar with this opening or stick with the London which is the only one I know?
ty for your excellent work!
go on like this!
Coach from which rating i should start using KiA...
Good point, Kurtiss! Thanks a lot for bringing it up 👍🙌
In a lot of positions in the beginning, black could've played e5. What would you do about this? You did not talk about that. Thank you.
I'm loving the KIA!
1 draw and 1 loss in 8 games. People in the 700's probably haven't seen it much.
how we can transfer other moves from e6 or c5 to the King's Indian Attack?
Are you going to do the Kings Indian Defense against 1. d4 in the future ? Do you teach this defense in your members content ? I am thinking of joining because i dont have a good core defence against d4. Thanks.
Hello! I am planning to provide you guys with everything you need to make it to master level including the King's Indian Defense. Stay tuned 😎
Since you liked my comment recently, I’d like to say that I am pleasantly surprised that you are active even in your old videos.
If you could spare a few minutes, how viable is the KIA? Can it get me to 1800 or is it too bad at high play?
Thank you
Thank u so much my terrific teacher for teaching pirc defence ,i applied on my online games , the result is so amazing ,crushing all my opponent even i'm white or black , your so great and i invite all my friends to subscribe your you-tube channel.

Yes, we will cover the main line of the Scandinavian at some point for sure 👍
