And the obligatory caveat that "I'd love to see any refutations or questions in the comments, but thus far no top grandmaster has found a refutation to this."
As someone learning the King’s Indian, you don’t know how helpful these speedrun games are. I’ve been watching since I started playing chess two years ago, and with the help of your and other youtubers’ videos, I’ve just surpassed a 2000 rating online:)
Eyy that's awesome congrats, I'm learning the KID as well and I'm currently jumping rope with the 2000 barrier. Would you be interested in playing some practice games where we stick to the Kings Indian? :)
I am a struggling 2000 rated player that loves the KID but when it locks up into a standoff like this- your thoughts at 17:15 is SO EDUCATIONAL to me. I learn so much from your ideas and stream of thought! Thank you for sharing such wisdom!
Honestly, I love the K.I.D so much. Started playing it ~1400 level, because I didn't like the Queen's Gambit Accepted/Declined, and wanted something sharp in my repertoire against d4.
Been playing chess for about 3 years now, and am currently a 1700 USCF rated player; as a KID player, this is possibly the most instructive King's Indian Defense RUclips video I've ever seen. You covered such a wide array of opening and middle game ideas that are worth their weight in GOLD. Thank You So Much.
This. Im a beginner, but have been messing around with it without really understanding it (not intentionally, just trying to teach myself which isn't necessarily ideal) and this video blew my mind. It really captures just how versatile it truly is, and also shows why I've been having some trouble without any guidance; there's just so much to it, and it isn't all intuitive for a beginner. Having Danya explain these concepts in such detail is such a good resource. This didn't make me a better KID player; it made me a better chess player.
You’re awesome Danya! I’ve gotten so much better since I started watching your vids a year ago, thanks for all your help! (I also watch your vids on the treadmill and I lost 20 pounds so far! 🥳)
What an absolutely sweet thing to do, giving away these splendid chess lessons (I don't know what else to call them). Danya both super smart and super nice, a very rare combination. Maybe Carlsen can compete with his chess app...
As someone with aphantasia, meaning inability to visualize, it is so great to see a creator considering people who have trouble visualizing. Drawing the arrows, explaining in more detail than some others usually would. Thank you so much!
52:11 I found this position fascinating, so I went through it with stockfish. Engine found here f5, and idea is if black takes with bishop you can bring out the knight safely. Also engine has several refuting options through the attack, and he estimates original position as equal.
Thank you again Danya! Your lessons are so instructive. I fell in love with the KID a few years back and recently felt like I hit a wall when I reached 1700 and couldn’t improve. Your videos have been so educational and have improved not only my play as black but how I analyze the board and my positions in general.
Thank you very much, Daniel, for your spectacular analysis and explanation as always. In this video you helped answer a plethora of questions I’ve had for a long time with these positions. Extremely informative. Thank you very much.
after the analysis I'm longing for you to play the Benko/Benoni next time there is a choice when the Grünfeld isn't an option anymore! The variations looked so exciting!
31:22 "i can talk about this forever, let's focus on the game" damn, i know he's a gm but what a flex! being able to just dissect an opening out of the blue like that
Danya id love to see you play against a GM in classical chess and teach longer theoretical lines and you commentating on your thinking at the highest level. thanks!
Just the quick smile and taking with the knight. I bet a lot of viewers might have been tempted to retake with the queen but Danya is a GM for a reason and doesn't even take a second for the right move.
Really good analysis. Gotham Chess had me playing the Pirc Defense thinking it was the King’s Indian…. And I wondered why it didn’t work well for me. Going to try some of these concepts moving forward
In the line you didn't play, c5 d5 b5, either at this move or the next white can go d6. Black will go Qa5+. A number of lines get black having to capture the pawn on e7 with his king and castling by hand. Interesting lines.
I used to play chess When I was younger Coming back into it I found the grunfeld and I love it. However watching Danielle's videos. I realized that I need to also improve of my king's indian and on my banko. Which I don't study. But now I will. Starting with banko gambit
I like how often he says "blunder a pawn." On my level, blundering comes to mind only when losing a minor peace or worse. Losing a pawn, meh, who cares. 😂
24:27 "i was worried about this move..." oh yes it seems dangerous "but now that i look at it a little bit closer i think it might be losing the game" of course yes
Just look at the board at the 6:36 mark of the video. White has all 4 minor pieces developed, and control of the center with 2 pawns on the 4th rank. Danya has only 2 pieces developed and no pawns on the 4th rank. By all accounts this favors white, but yet Danya demolishes him in the end.
at around the 1400 level the kings indian is about all i play with black lmao, trying to learn more but i almost always fall back to the kings indian so thanks for these danya appreciate ya brotha
Bf4 lines are very common (and not very dangerous) in the Grunfeld. d5 rather than d6 after Nc3 would have lead to an interesting more Grunfeld style game.
On your last Grunefeld video I asked why white doesn't play Nf3 on the third move and avoid the knight trade on c3 after e4. In your analysis I think you cover a bunch of problems that black players always walk into against me. :)
About this game, it's crazy how Danya says how important it is to have active pieces, and then he gets a minor piece just because his pieces are so active. Damn.
Whenever I play king indian, opponents always push H pawn . It annoys me so much. I don't properly know how to counter that move. Please tell me the way to counter it.
If it appears they are going queenside castle, you could wait it out. You could try h6, and parry g5 when pawn comes up to buy time. But mainly if your opponent is doing this too fast before developing, you can gain initiative pushing through the center. Unless the center is locked up these early attacks are risky. Try it yourself as white against kings indian.
I watch this video everyday I still go like hold on what was the move again…blunder! 😅 great opening and video though I love the calculation I need to play longer time games because 3min games it takes me 5min to calculate 😂simply doesn’t add up!
Swear I was thinking in my head the better piece between the bishop and the knight ... I know the bishop is relatively better, but the knight is a monster in time pressure or pressure in general as we saw the opponent hang his queen as probably, he forgot that the knight could go backward.
I hate the gruenfeld at this level bc everyone plays kf3 and i have to revert to the kings indian I commented that on the reddit threads, and this video is a great example lol. KI feels so passive, i generally dislike being forced into it. Benoni is okay
Black is never forced to revert to the king’s indian in the Grunfeld, if they play Nc3 after Nf3 Bg7 you can play d5. Even in the game Danya could have played c5 or d5 instead of castling immediately
Can someone explain to me why the dark squares bishop is so important in the kings Indian? He keeps saying he doesn’t want to give it up, but I guess I don’t understand it’s utility to that degree haha
It's okay if you don't understand yet. I think one thing to notice is how many squares a piece is observing (even if there are other pieces and pawns in the way). This bishop is on the long diagonal, which is the best diagonal on the board this bishop can sit on. Just look at the board, and you'll see there is not a bigger diagonal this bishop can be on. And also consider it develops at a cost. It takes time to fianchetto, time that could have been spent fighting for the center (which black is out of time for anyways), and if you plan to castle there, you give up some of your king safety. So you must be careful trading this bishop, especially when your opponent has a dark square bishop themselves.
that dark square bishop is really important in KID as it is the piece which is holding your whole structure if you give it up then the weakness on your dark squares available around king will get exploited
KID > Grunfeld because sometimes you cannot play a Grunfeld set-up (eg this game), and then you need to also learn KID ideas, while Grunfeld ideas are already complicated enough. There’s no scenario in which a KID player needs to learn any Grunfeld-related stuff ;)
Danya: solves chess
Also Danya: "Hopefully this has been relatively illuminating."
And the obligatory caveat that "I'd love to see any refutations or questions in the comments, but thus far no top grandmaster has found a refutation to this."

Yea at 1500 level (im assuming you're there), losing a minor piece or two is the most you need to completed lose a game
At 1500 I figure 2 pawns or so can be a decisive advantage.

I'm very much a brand new player, but something about the king's indian is alluring to me. It feels like such a cool opening
Pal Benko was famous for his articles in Chess Life magazine on the endgame. The quality dipped a bit in his twilight years, but still worth reading.
Playing Benko style is very potent against some versions of the 4 pawns attack in the Kings Indian, but the positions are really wild.
