I like "she should've died hereafter, there would've been a time for such a word" it shows how far macbeth and his wife's relationship has fallen and how apathetic he is towards her

My favourite Macbeth quote was, “One cried ’God bless us!’ and ‘Amen!’ the other; as they had seen me, with these hangman’s hands.
Listening their fear, I could not say ‘Amen!’
When they did say ‘God bless us!’”

Mr salles am I right to think that for the Section B on both language papers it is quality>quantity? I know for section A points make marks but for creative writing if you have a page grade 9 level and a page grade 7 would this increase your grade like a lit essay or decrease it? (Is "positive marking" also for creative writing?)

It is quality for Q5. 400-500 words for the top grades, and you can get them for less

I’d argue that “twas a rough night,” alike Lady Mac’s fake faint and “in our house!?” line, was intended to show just how BAD they are at lying. They’re honestly just…not good at doing crime. Also, it could easily be played for comedy!
In general, hallucinating the ghost of your dead best friend, losing sleep over the murder, and having a brain “full of scorpions” because you feel guilty…isn’t “psycho” behavior? He’s got a conscience. He’s just not great at listening to it.

Also, gray morality is pretty important in Shakespeare. He loves nuance. Reading Mac as evil from the get-go is a choice, but I don’t think it’s the best one in terms of getting the most meaning out of the text (how otherwise normal people can do horrible things due to beliefs in superstition, fate, political motives, etc).

@@lindseyb2777 what a fabulous response, thanks. I agree Macbeth can definitely be read that way. For me the nuance is how society how society has has required his psychopathic behaviour as valour and skill on the battlefield, so that it has been lauded and rewarded as a noble virtue in the cause of patriotic duty and loyalty to the king. The witches single him out because they realise they can unleash this against society. After all, he points out rationally that chance may have him king without his stir - and yet his mind turns immediately to murder. Once Malcolm is announced as heir, he doesn’t react by thinking that this new problem makes killing Duncan pointless - as Malcolm will then be crowned - he simply doubles down on his desire to kill anyway, even though this is unlikely to make him king.

Thanks for the response! I definitely can see your angle. I think that, given the historical context of the people the play and the fact that Duncan has to name Malcolm as his heir rather than it being a de facto truth, Macbeth might have some futile hope of a return to the tannistry system or of Malcolm being out of the picture for whatever reason (maybe a murdery reason, maybe not)…but it only takes one conversation with his wife to get him back in a stabbing mood. (However, he does say that his heart knocks at his ribs etc etc and otherwise indicates that a part of him really doesn’t want to do this). If anything, I think it might be a commentary on how he’s a member of a hyper-violent society. Whether or not he would be naturally inclined towards violence if he weren’t a member of such a violence-oriented culture is something we may never know, but the point stands- in his world, being “a good man” means being a brutal fighter, treason isn’t all that uncommon, and being cutthroat is seen as a natural part of masculinity. If the Scottish Play’s story was moved to another place and time, we may have gotten a very different story (something many, many adaptations are eager to explore)!
