    I remember watching this match, which was my first look at Alexander Zverev. His size, movement and clean hitting were so impressive, and he was taking the fight to Nadal. I said to myself "This guy is going to be a Top 5 player before long" Players like him are so rare that you know them when you see them.

    • @sheawee
      @sheawee 6 лет назад +19

      I agree but in a sense he was. I know that's confusing. What I mean is, he wasn't playing his physically best tennis and Zverev was doing a great Djokovich impersonation and mitigating Nadal's spin by taking the ball early and confidently and not just getting it back but getting it back with heavy deep shots. Nadal made superlative adjustments to his strategy that enabled him to win. He also started hitting deeper and and flatter in the last 2 sets, and as Yonas pointed out he started slicing a lot, taking a ton of pace off the ball whereas early in the match he was playing his usual strategy of being a brick wall with a devastating and frustrating forehand. In a sense, his change of strategy and his typical peak fitness meant he sort of was playing his best tennis. He wasn't dominating like he would on clay but he found a way to neutralize an opponent who was playing confidently and had thwarted his initial strategy. That's high level tennis.

    It's now 2021, the US Open has ended. I came searching for this match on RUclips because of Sasha's quote after his semifinal loss to Djokovic. He said: "Novak Djokovic is the best player to have ever played the game, simply because in the most important moments of the match, I'd rather play against anybody else than him"
    I remembered this match had lots of clutch moments in the 5th. After watching these highlights again, I take back my comment that Sasha is honest. He isn't. He's biased. Nadal gave him a much harder time on this match's important moments than Djokovic did in this year's US Open semifinal. Sasha also played way better against Nadal in the 5th than against Novak in the 5th.
    And yet no credit from Sasha to Nadal.

    • @kakashihatake1029
      @kakashihatake1029 3 года назад +1

      No one can say that Zverev was wrong there though. If you look at history Djokovic is pressure player number 1 followed by Nadal. Zverev isn't talking about just the 5th set. In every tight match when Djokovic is getting destroyed he still stays with the opponent and wins the important points to demoralise their soul. Take Roland Garros 2021 semifinal against Nadal as just 1 example

    • @houseofleaves126
      @houseofleaves126 3 года назад +2

      He plays a lot of tennis so maybe he forgot the particulars of this one. Also, he isn’t required to give credit to Nadal in every comment of praise he gives to Djokovic.

      Agree, the hardest ones are the 2012 and 2014 Australian Opens, in 2012 it was a simple mistake at 4-2, a pretty easy backhand miss at the net could have given him the lead 5-2 and then close the match, in 2014 it was hard because Wawrinka hasn't won set his entire career against Nadal, and in their most important encounter Nadal gets an injury and barely finishes the match.

    Nadal was leading Federer in the Final set of the finals 3-1.Federer unleashed a barrage of backhand strokes and for once Nadal appeared tentative. Ultimately Federer won. That uninhibited fearless Federer of 2017 was absent in 2018.No wonder most of the titles couldn't be defended by the Swiss.

    Even when Nadal is half a step slower than his best, he's still freaking dangerous. All it takes is for him to get the ball on his racket and he's well and truly still in contention in the rally. He doesn't know when to give up. His opponents have to take the match away from him with clever tactical shotmaking and outfox him with power and variety to stand a chance.
