I’ve been away from sophisticated audio systems for nigh on 30+ years. A basement flood destroyed my LP collection and much of my mid-level equipment. I went simple, replaced those vinyl LPs with CDs and moved on. Now, at age 67 and recently retired, I’m moving into a new house and desire to return to a separate component system. I only discovered your channel over the weekend and am so glad I did. Thank you for explaining what could be daunting in an easily understood fashion.

Great video. Didn't matter that it was sponsored, still very informative for someone (like myself), wanting to get into vinyl. Many thanks for the upload.
Why is it that 40 years ago - every record player that you could buy came fully assembled, now a company considers selling an assembled product to be a special feature? Are we that stupid?
Very informative video. I think a lot of newbies (not myself, I'm older than dirt) would benefit from a video discussing the difference between direct drive vs. belt drive; moving coil vs. moving magnet. I can imagine someone new to vinyl looking at the specs of various turntables and their eyes glazing over.
So wonderful seeing someone do videos talking about how to to enjoy vinyl on all levels as oppose to be and elitist trying to "show off". I love audiophile videos, but I love seeing new people getting into vinyl more!!!!
You recommended this turntable for me earlier this year and I've been loving it. It's exactly what I needed and exactly what I wanted. Love this company, the customer service was very helpful when my dust cover was broken during travel. The gave me a new one for half the price along with new hardware for it shipped for free. Many companies would have said it wasn't their problem, but not U-Turn. They're very helpful and personable through email. Highly recommend checking them out, whatever your price range.
Maybe I've missed it, but have you ever shown us how to store, stack or basically treat LPs? I've heard that records should never be stacked flat on the shelf or that only certain types of cleaning fluids and methods are best to use. Also, aren't there different types of "vinyl" that are used in the manufacturing of albums? Maybe it's not the topic that is normally covered on the channel (An excellent channel, by the way.) but there seems to be a lot of myths and facts about how to buy, care for, listen to and play LPs that you could debunk or clear up.
Hi Andrew, hope both you & Kristi are in the pink of health. Just bought myself the Rega P1 turntable & the Mini A2D Phono stage as they were on sale. It's my first foray into the vinyl world & I'm both excited & anxious. I already have a collection of old LPs inherited from my Dad. They had been collecting dust in my storeroom for over 20 years :). The P1 seems like plug & play but I still wanna make sure I don't mess up. I have a few queries b4 I embark on my vinyl journey & I hope you can help. 1. will playing very old records damage the stylus ? Do I need to clean the records first? If yes, what would be a good & economical way to do it ? Do I need a dedicated record cleaner ? 2. how do I know when to replace the stylus ? On average, how long does a stylus last ? 3. Can I replace the existing cartridge with just any MM cartridge e.g. the Ortofon 2M Blue you spoke so highly of ? Is it worth doing so or it'd be better off just replacing the P1 with a better turntable ? Can I replace the cartridge myself or do I need a pro to do it ? 4. where should I place the turntable for the best performance ? On a rack e.g. an IKEA Kallax or preferably on the floor ? Or do you have a better suggestion ? 5. what other kits do I need to have in this vinyl hobby ? 6. any solution to repair warped records ? Sorry for the long queries & thanks again for all your & Kristi's dedication, effort & time producing all those videos.
Hi Andrew. The most important thing you have to do to with both brand new records and used ones is to thoroughly clean and vacuum your records, If you do not want to invest in a record cleaning machine you may as well stop reading. So you will need a record cleaning machine. Record cleaner. Power cleaner, and record preservative.
Thank you for providing good advice to people who want to get into the hobby. When i was a student and i wanted to buy my first turntable i remember people saying to me you'll need 2000 euro to start. it was mind boggling to me. Speaking about powered speakers was an heresy. Those people don't understand that young people are needed for the survive of the audio industry.
I‘m not sure if at 25 I still count as young, but as a student, my budget is definitely young. But I got myself a second hand pro-ject debut carbon for 250chf/usd, connected it to my 2nd hand adam 7x, got a cheap scarlet DAC and can use a friend‘s preamp. all in all a great setup that totalled roughly 700chf/usd. and I am SO happy.
Im obsessed about vinyl records since I've come to learn about it but dang!! I didn't know having a custom vinyl setup is expensive i might just buy a cheap vinyl player first and see if im really into this. 😁
Thank you Andrew. Because of this video, I bought the U-Turn Orbit Plus, and I really like it. I have it connected to a vintage Harman/Kardon AVR-20 receiver and a set of Klipsch R41-M speakers with a subwoofer, and couldn't be happier. It sounds great.
Exactly what i was looking for :D But one of my problems are.....the more things i learn as a beginner, the further away i get from actually buying a first "real" system....The decisions...and all the new information about audio and important things to think about.... Like....is it even worth to put in any money at all if you can't start with the Klipsch RP-600M?? :O ;) Edit: I watched the " Battling Hi-Fi Addiction " video after this one so it feels a bit better now :D Edit nr2: F****.......every room in my apartment suck very much....
Was really into vinyl back in high school before switching to CDs. Now I'm into streaming but would love to get back into vinyl again. This was a great intro which brought some reminiscing for me. Thanks, Andrew!
This video was very clear and informative and it was super helpful to me. Thank you so much for posting it, you're very good at explaining things clearly
Andrew, I just wanted to say, thank you. Thank you for your non-elitist videos.Thank you for being you. I purchased a U-Turn Orbit Special with the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, I already have the 2M Blue stylus and I honestly can't wait to listen to it. I have plenty of records that I've inherited and I think I've finally found a hobby that I can enjoy. My only question to you is regarding inner groove distortion, did you experience any of it while listening to your table? From what you've mentioned, these cartridges already come pre-aligned at the factory, and I have even emailed U-Turn and they confirmed that. I imagine with the 2M Blue which is a nude elliptical (I think) I shouldn't experience it.
I’m old enough to have been around when LPs were "for real". This video reminds me of every reason why I ditched my records as soon as CDs were available and never looked back.
This video was helpful, but I'm struggling to understand the best way to integrate different audio components. Any advice or specific resources that explain this in detail?

You are true gem for audiophiler .. who loves to get best out their speaker .. thanks .. made me subscribe to your channel .. and Instagram .. thanks Andrew
We got our turntable the other day. Played a 33 rpm Record sound great. And we played a 45 rpm Record. Two days later went back to 33 RPMs. Somehow the belt stretched and now it won’t play. How sad. We just got this thing now we can’t use it. My daughter wanted this thing so bad, we split the cost and now it won’t work. I think leaving the rubber band in 45 mold may have stretched it. It doesn’t take much to stretch this band it’s sort of cheap.
Great video, production value is getting really high! I also like the clean uncluttered look that your set up has. The clarification of the pre amp was good, this was the thing that had me most confused when starting out.
I really love the belt on the outside of the TT but in my house I already what would happen. My Cat would chew it broken and she'd go through her 9 lives pretty quick! lol Great Video.
Really enjoyed this video, it's definitely helped a lot as I'm in the process of getting my first vinyl player that does not have a built in phono pre-amp. Quick question - I've got powered speakers but unfortunately they don't have volume control as they're studio speakers. Any ideas what the solution for this would be? Do you know if there are any phono pre-amp's or phono stages with volume control or anything similar that could help with my situation? Thanks a lot.
I just received mine in the mail yesterday. Could not get in touch with customer service and setting up if the speakers is a nightmare for me. I am in Walmart buying a audio-technic and new speakers. Based on not getting the customer service. If I cannot even speak to someone not with it!
Generally speaking, when speakers are unpowered (passive) a single integrated stereo amplifier is enough to power a pair of speakers. Often times as quality increases components will separate and one might have a stereo preamplifier feeding into a stereo amplifier. In high end audio systems it's not uncommon to have a stereo preamplifier feeding the signal to two mono amplifiers. One for the right audio channel and one for the left. This is usually referred to as a monoblock setup. This may seem confusing at first but it is essentially the same process/setup just with an increasing amount of components as opposed to the preamp, and both audio channel amplifiers contained in the same metal box as is the case with a stereo integrated amplifier. Hope this helps
Looking for my first record player and this has been by far the most helpful video I've come across. Also good job on selling the Uturn. Been set on an AT120 but now im seriously reconsidering
Andrew, great info here & very well presented! I have just started looking into a vinyl setup. Because of my initial budget I would love a set of speakers which can accommodate my families needs like Music, Podcasts, radio & of course my future new turntable which I am leaning towards the new Bluetooth Audio Technica AT-LP120XBT-USB. I love a pair of speakers that can connect directly to my turntable but that are versatile and adaptable to todays tech having both Bluetooth & Wireless abilities. I am intrigued by the SONOS world and the ability to add speakers as I mature into this new adventure but the lack of Bluetooth connectivity is really the only stumbling block. In your experience have you come across any speakers that fit my demanding standards & that meet your requirements for recommending them for me. Thank you
Would you say keeping the preamp separate is the way to go vs getting the u turn with it built in? I was kind of wanting it built it just to have less stuff but I’m getting lost in all the videos I’m watching haha. Also stuck between buying one of their higher end ones- I want the pretty finished wood- a fluance or the Audio Technica AT-LPW40WN. I love the look and idea of easy listening with the u turn being a newbie, but if I’m gonna choose to spend $4-500 I definitely want to make sure I’m choosing wisely. There are so many naysayers on u turn who say go flunace but i love the idea of supporting american made too. Any who I’ll stop rambling but please assist if you see this, I’m so far down the rabbit hole! Your video on the C62 made me consider a Crosley!! Thanks for all your inclusive and fun videos and showing you really don’t need to spend too much for a great product!
I noticed on your Technics amp that you have the phono ground connection. Does the U-Turn phono player require a ground connection? Will you get feedback if you don't ground the phono player?
@@bbutler5090 Do you have a link to any of the videos? I've personally experienced feedback problems using the same surface and wanted to see what was different.
I've been looking to purchase an Orbit Plus since you reviewed yours awhile back. I purchased a pair of Kanto YU-6 bookshelf speakers this summer, and am looking forward to a turntable upgrade soon. Great video as always!
Do most powered/active speakers and integrated amplifiers digitize the incoming analog signal before converting it back to analog (for digital volume control, bass management, etc)? Is it worth the effort to try to preserve the analog signal from turntable to speaker output?
Considering it's all analog you can just use RCA Y-splitters and split the turntable signal between your headphone amp and speaker system. It's dirt cheap too.
Amazing and very helpful video. Question, what would be the easiest way to have both headphones/speakers set up with only one phono preamp? (Schiit mani)
Great video(s)! I was hoping you can explain why getting an external pre amp for a TT even though it has one built in already, may help with the delivering better sound/ reproduction of the LP..as some suggest? And in what case is it worth it to by pass your built in TT pre amp? I have the Audio-Technica LP3(has pre amp) with a Yamaha RS-202 which does not have a phono pre amp, and Klipsch RP-400m speakers. Do you generally hear a marked improvement or should one focus on a stylus cartridge upgrade as a first step?
Amazing videos as always, Andrew! Quick question: is putting the Audioengine A2+ speakers you have on the same shelf or surface as your U-Turn Orbit Plus okay? With my set-up, I would have to have the speakers likely only two or three feet away from each other flanking the record player, and I'm afraid that playing them all on the same surface would create too much resonance and would impact the performance of the Orbit Plus. Do you think that's an issue and that I should get speaker stands, or should the heavy build of the Orbit Plus not make this a problem? Thanks so much for all you do - you just gained a new subscriber! :D
I would love to hear these Uturn TTs. They're not available in the UK though. From what I've read many a beginner would enjoy these and stay with this great hobby/pastime for longer etc. Great video Andrew.
The worst thing for turn tables are vibrations. The placement of the speakers as shown on the thumbnail is getting people started in the absolutely wrong way
Nice just bought a Marantz 7000n and B&W 606 Anniversaries, should get them in a month. I know the Marantz has a phono preamp built in or whatever it’s called, so keen to buy a TT in the future and start collecting records. I am a bit nervous with the vinyl I buy trying to know if it’s a good press or not
rookie question: I have an Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT-BK connected to a Kanto SYD speaker and they both have built-in phono preamps; connected through an RCA cable, do I set both devices to LINE? Do I set one to LINE and one to PHONO? If so, which one should be which? Sorry for the questions, I read in the manual about not using PHONO setting if my turntable has a built-in phono preamp and I had originally set both devices to PHONO - poor assumption on my part
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Always enjoy your vids, but actually on the U-Turn it is indeed needed (As per U-Turn). The arm is calibrated with the mat, since the U-Turn doesn't have an adjustable VTA, that 3mm comes into play. Yes, usually acrylic platters can run naked, not the U-Turn. That being said, replace the felt mat with an acrylic mat and you've accomplished the benefits of having the acrylic platter in the first place. I thought the video was a great introduction for those new to the vinyl hobby, keep up the good work :)
I notice that the Audioengine speakers you use also have bluetooth. Does this mean that if I have a turntable with Bluetooth, that I can connect the two and have it play, or do I need extras like a pre-amp?

This was randomly in my recommendations and I don't know why, but damn I love this
Andrew, great info here & very well presented!
Thanks for explaining what a pre amp is. I think I’m going to get this setup
Enjoy it! Thank you for watching.
*Step 4, move speakers off of the same surface where your record player is located to reduce vibration and feedback.
should be #1
Andrew has a video debunking this idea. There are others online also.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for all your videos Andrew. I’ve learnt quite a bit and always enjoy watching your videos! Kudos!!!
Damn I have to spend almost 1k for this set up
Awesome as usual! Great video guys!
Andrew - can you tell me what headphones are shown - they look fantastic - love your videos
Do most powered/active speakers and integrated amplifiers digitize the incoming analog signal before converting it back to analog (for digital volume control, bass management, etc)?
Is it worth the effort to try to preserve the analog signal from turntable to speaker output?
Do you find any or much difference between S shaped and straight arms?
Me personally, no. I don't notice/hear a difference. I get that there is supposed to be one, but to me they're both valid and good.
What is the best way to add a headphone amp to a vinyl system with an integrated amp?
Considering it's all analog you can just use RCA Y-splitters and split the turntable signal between your headphone amp and speaker system. It's dirt cheap too.
Does your integrated amp not have a headphone jack? I've never had one that didn't.
Well this is just perfect! Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Does U-turn only shipped to the states and Canada? Are there other ways I can purchase them?
Thank you for this video! Really helped! I have my eyes set on the Kantos once I'm ready to upgrade. Really love your videos. They are top notch!
Thank you. Appreciate you watching.
You deserve more subscribers! subbed and liked
Thank you for this Andrew! Just what I was looking for
The worst thing for turn tables are vibrations. The placement of the speakers as shown on the thumbnail is getting people started in the absolutely wrong way
Bookshelf speakers are not going to cause significant vibrations. It's the subwoofer you need to be careful about and getting into a feedback loop.
My life needs that turntable
this video taught me plenty
Nice just bought a Marantz 7000n and B&W 606 Anniversaries, should get them in a month.
I know the Marantz has a phono preamp built in or whatever it’s called, so keen to buy a TT in the future and start collecting records.
I am a bit nervous with the vinyl I buy trying to know if it’s a good press or not
Me interested in his JBL L100 Classic speakers instead.
Thanks 😎
damn it, you make me wanna jump to vinyl from cds.
Don’t CD is the better format and it is way cheaper and less maintenance
Definitely switch it sounds so much better
Nice to see a fellow goo goo dolls fan.
rookie question: I have an Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT-BK connected to a Kanto SYD speaker and they both have built-in phono preamps; connected through an RCA cable, do I set both devices to LINE? Do I set one to LINE and one to PHONO? If so, which one should be which? Sorry for the questions, I read in the manual about not using PHONO setting if my turntable has a built-in phono preamp and I had originally set both devices to PHONO - poor assumption on my part
I honestly thought this guy didn’t have a clue about hifi till I saw the JBLs 👍
Well made video. Will see it again and again.
Is a slip mat even necessary on an acrylic platter?
No, but I included it because it’s in the box and I wanted viewers to know they can use it.
Excellent video! Precise information!
Thanks for watching!
Very well made video, helped me a ton!
Great job! Congratulations on your recent nuptials!🙏🏻🎧❤️ 👰
I notice that the Audioengine speakers you use also have bluetooth. Does this mean that if I have a turntable with Bluetooth, that I can connect the two and have it play, or do I need extras like a pre-amp?
Take a shot every time he says "turn". Extra shot if there's 2 consecutive.
Very informative, thank you for this!
