The purchase of a turntable is just the beginning. Getting a collection of records is WAY more expensive than the turntable itself.
Really informative! I think I missed this, but if anyone's wondering, he was using a U-Turn Orbit.
I’ve been away from sophisticated audio systems for nigh on 30+ years. A basement flood destroyed my LP collection and much of my mid-level equipment. I went simple, replaced those vinyl LPs with CDs and moved on. Now, at age 67 and recently retired, I’m moving into a new house and desire to return to a separate component system. I only discovered your channel over the weekend and am so glad I did. Thank you for explaining what could be daunting in an easily understood fashion.
"my U-turb Orbit turntable" x 107 times
Gotta get those products for free
Lol 😂
sorry i didn't quite catch what turntable you used in this video.
I'm sorry. What was the name of that turntable again?
U-turb orbit
😆
I-Rotate Revolve
Wait, let me get this straight. Are you using a Uturn Orbit?
I use U-Turn Orbit turntables from time-to-time, yes. I have two.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews mans not getting the joke🤦🏼♂️

Another essential thing is vinyl cleaning!
Even after 2 years Andrew is still responding to comments, what a gigachad
7:36 to jump to the part about speakers and sound.
Tonight I will dream about the U-Turn Orbit. The U-Turn Orbit will be my next purchase and has everything I need. God, I love the U-Turn Orbit. Going to name my firstborn child U-Turn Orbit.
Drink when this dude says "U-turn Orbit™"
This felt more like "how to plug in RCA cables" that vinyl basics. I would really love to see the fundamentals around RPM, needles, balance, vibration, grounding, noise, etc. That would cover a much wider segment

Your video is so UHD and Clear, I’m hypnotized to go buy a u-turn orbit turn table lol
Take a shot every time he says orbit turntable
Im drunk now
Why is it that 40 years ago - every record player that you could buy came fully assembled, now a company considers selling an assembled product to be a special feature? Are we that stupid?
They bank on it
Great video. Didn't matter that it was sponsored, still very informative for someone (like myself), wanting to get into vinyl. Many thanks for the upload.
Has someone connect 15 cables along side 5 devices - "It's that simple" :D
Maybe I've missed it, but have you ever shown us how to store, stack or basically treat LPs? I've heard that records should never be stacked flat on the shelf or that only certain types of cleaning fluids and methods are best to use. Also, aren't there different types of "vinyl" that are used in the manufacturing of albums? Maybe it's not the topic that is normally covered on the channel (An excellent channel, by the way.) but there seems to be a lot of myths and facts about how to buy, care for, listen to and play LPs that you could debunk or clear up.
Very informative video. I think a lot of newbies (not myself, I'm older than dirt) would benefit from a video discussing the difference between direct drive vs. belt drive; moving coil vs. moving magnet. I can imagine someone new to vinyl looking at the specs of various turntables and their eyes glazing over.
And in 2019 we all could certainly use some fun!
Right! 👍

This video was very clear and informative and it was super helpful to me. Thank you so much for posting it, you're very good at explaining things clearly
The very first thing for newbies when setting up a turntable or working on one. Make sure the tone arm is locked down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So wonderful seeing someone do videos talking about how to to enjoy vinyl on all levels as oppose to be and elitist trying to "show off". I love audiophile videos, but I love seeing new people getting into vinyl more!!!!
Putting the belt and platter on the player is pretty straight forward. The tricky bit is the cartridge mounting.
This video was helpful, but I'm struggling to understand the best way to integrate different audio components. Any advice or specific resources that explain this in detail?
I have used RecordBuilds - they have a few setups which are a pretty good, comprehensive guide for a basic set up to get you started.
Im obsessed about vinyl records since I've come to learn about it but dang!! I didn't know having a custom vinyl setup is expensive i might just buy a cheap vinyl player first and see if im really into this. 😁
A cheap turntable is about $200-300. Anything cheaper will wreck your records
You recommended this turntable for me earlier this year and I've been loving it. It's exactly what I needed and exactly what I wanted. Love this company, the customer service was very helpful when my dust cover was broken during travel. The gave me a new one for half the price along with new hardware for it shipped for free. Many companies would have said it wasn't their problem, but not U-Turn. They're very helpful and personable through email. Highly recommend checking them out, whatever your price range.
I appreciate you sharing your experience and I'm glad to hear you're happy with your purchase!
Awesome Review! Thanks for sharing. I absolutely love vinyl records and enjoy the experience of listening and mixing the 12" singles.
Hi Andrew, hope both you & Kristi are in the pink of health. Just bought myself the Rega P1 turntable & the Mini A2D Phono stage as they were on sale. It's my first foray into the vinyl world & I'm both excited & anxious. I already have a collection of old LPs inherited from my Dad. They had been collecting dust in my storeroom for over 20 years :). The P1 seems like plug & play but I still wanna make sure I don't mess up. I have a few queries b4 I embark on my vinyl journey & I hope you can help.
1. will playing very old records damage the stylus ? Do I need to clean the records first? If yes, what would be a good & economical way to do it ? Do I need a dedicated record cleaner ?
2. how do I know when to replace the stylus ? On average, how long does a stylus last ?
3. Can I replace the existing cartridge with just any MM cartridge e.g. the Ortofon 2M Blue you spoke so highly of ? Is it worth doing so or it'd be better off just replacing the P1 with a better turntable ? Can I replace the cartridge myself or do I need a pro to do it ?
4. where should I place the turntable for the best performance ? On a rack e.g. an IKEA Kallax or preferably on the floor ? Or do you have a better suggestion ?
5. what other kits do I need to have in this vinyl hobby ?
6. any solution to repair warped records ?
Sorry for the long queries & thanks again for all your & Kristi's dedication, effort & time producing all those videos.
Another option with the Audioengine setup is add a subwoofer to the A2's output. Great sound becomes outstanding sound.
Hey man ik this comment is late but do you have any subwoofer recommendations for the audio engines
Exactly what i was looking for :D But one of my problems are.....the more things i learn as a beginner, the further away i get from actually buying a first "real" system....The decisions...and all the new information about audio and important things to think about....
Like....is it even worth to put in any money at all if you can't start with the Klipsch RP-600M?? :O
;)
Edit: I watched the " Battling Hi-Fi Addiction " video after this one so it feels a bit better now :D
Edit nr2: F****.......every room in my apartment suck very much....
Thank you, Andrew, it's very informative and helpful rather than promoting U-turn Orbit turntables. 👍👍👍
I just received mine in the mail yesterday. Could not get in touch with customer service and setting up if the speakers is a nightmare for me. I am in Walmart buying a audio-technic and new speakers. Based on not getting the customer service. If I cannot even speak to someone not with it!
Do you find any or much difference between S shaped and straight arms?
Me personally, no. I don't notice/hear a difference. I get that there is supposed to be one, but to me they're both valid and good.
This was a great video! Very easy to follow and understand in order to help get started!
Oh I’m so glad to hear that. Thank you for watching!
I just watched it again... lol! I just like it ... that's at least 5. I love turntables... especially the kind regular humans can afford.
Andrew, I just wanted to say, thank you. Thank you for your non-elitist videos.Thank you for being you. I purchased a U-Turn Orbit Special with the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, I already have the 2M Blue stylus and I honestly can't wait to listen to it. I have plenty of records that I've inherited and I think I've finally found a hobby that I can enjoy. My only question to you is regarding inner groove distortion, did you experience any of it while listening to your table? From what you've mentioned, these cartridges already come pre-aligned at the factory, and I have even emailed U-Turn and they confirmed that. I imagine with the 2M Blue which is a nude elliptical (I think) I shouldn't experience it.
Don't sweat it, you're going to be okay. Thanks for watching!
You guys are fantastic❤
Between the two of you, you have more knowledge than every employee of The geek squad.😊
We got our turntable the other day. Played a 33 rpm Record sound great. And we played a 45 rpm Record. Two days later went back to 33 RPMs. Somehow the belt stretched and now it won’t play. How sad. We just got this thing now we can’t use it. My daughter wanted this thing so bad, we split the cost and now it won’t work. I think leaving the rubber band in 45 mold may have stretched it. It doesn’t take much to stretch this band it’s sort of cheap.
A nice video on vinyl for newbies. Informative and concise. Don't let the naysayers convince you otherwise.
I appreciate you watching! And thanks for the kind words.
Was really into vinyl back in high school before switching to CDs. Now I'm into streaming but would love to get back into vinyl again. This was a great intro which brought some reminiscing for me. Thanks, Andrew!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for providing good advice to people who want to get into the hobby. When i was a student and i wanted to buy my first turntable i remember people saying to me you'll need 2000 euro to start. it was mind boggling to me. Speaking about powered speakers was an heresy. Those people don't understand that young people are needed for the survive of the audio industry.
Young people are what is precisely needed for more reasons than just monetary survival. Thanks for watching!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Indeed.
I‘m not sure if at 25 I still count as young, but as a student, my budget is definitely young.
But I got myself a second hand pro-ject debut carbon for 250chf/usd, connected it to my 2nd hand adam 7x, got a cheap scarlet DAC and can use a friend‘s preamp. all in all a great setup that totalled roughly 700chf/usd.
and I am SO happy.
@@sarapocorn Great job! Also, you’re still young!
Damn I have to spend almost 1k for this set up
Hi Andrew. The most important thing you have to do to with both brand new records and used ones is to thoroughly clean and vacuum your records, If you do not want to invest in a record cleaning machine you may as well stop reading. So you will need a record cleaning machine. Record cleaner. Power cleaner, and record preservative.
Thanks for all your videos Andrew. I’ve learnt quite a bit and always enjoy watching your videos! Kudos!!!
I really love the belt on the outside of the TT but in my house I already what would happen. My Cat would chew it broken and she'd go through her 9 lives pretty quick! lol Great Video.
Well this is just perfect! Thank you.
You're very welcome!
You are true gem for audiophiler .. who loves to get best out their speaker .. thanks .. made me subscribe to your channel .. and Instagram .. thanks Andrew
Those JBLs are soooo cool looking. Just wow
@Jr Smith 😭😭😭🙏🏼
Let's say I don't have powered speakers. Is this when you would use one amp for each speaker? I often see setups that have 2 amps.
Generally speaking, when speakers are unpowered (passive) a single integrated stereo amplifier is enough to power a pair of speakers. Often times as quality increases components will separate and one might have a stereo preamplifier feeding into a stereo amplifier.
In high end audio systems it's not uncommon to have a stereo preamplifier feeding the signal to two mono amplifiers. One for the right audio channel and one for the left. This is usually referred to as a monoblock setup.
This may seem confusing at first but it is essentially the same process/setup just with an increasing amount of components as opposed to the preamp, and both audio channel amplifiers contained in the same metal box as is the case with a stereo integrated amplifier. Hope this helps
The main goal of a phono preamp is to handle The RIAA equalization curve used on every record like forever. Not just to make The cartrigde louder.
Thank you Andrew. Because of this video, I bought the U-Turn Orbit Plus, and I really like it. I have it connected to a vintage Harman/Kardon AVR-20 receiver and a set of Klipsch R41-M speakers with a subwoofer, and couldn't be happier. It sounds great.
Great to hear!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I love you and Kristi's Videos, especially the Five Dollar Finds. Please keep doing those. They are so much fun.
Great video, production value is getting really high! I also like the clean uncluttered look that your set up has. The clarification of the pre amp was good, this was the thing that had me most confused when starting out.
Thank you!
This was randomly in my recommendations and I don't know why, but damn I love this
Really enjoyed this video, it's definitely helped a lot as I'm in the process of getting my first vinyl player that does not have a built in phono pre-amp. Quick question - I've got powered speakers but unfortunately they don't have volume control as they're studio speakers. Any ideas what the solution for this would be? Do you know if there are any phono pre-amp's or phono stages with volume control or anything similar that could help with my situation? Thanks a lot.
Love your channel but there is no need to put the felt on top of the acrylic. That kind of defeats the point of the acrylic. Great video and keep up the good work!
Does U-turn only shipped to the states and Canada? Are there other ways I can purchase them?
Andrew, great info here & very well presented! I have just started looking into a vinyl setup. Because of my initial budget I would love a set of speakers which can accommodate my families needs like Music, Podcasts, radio & of course my future new turntable which I am leaning towards the new Bluetooth Audio Technica AT-LP120XBT-USB. I love a pair of speakers that can connect directly to my turntable but that are versatile and adaptable to todays tech having both Bluetooth & Wireless abilities. I am intrigued by the SONOS world and the ability to add speakers as I mature into this new adventure but the lack of Bluetooth connectivity is really the only stumbling block. In your experience have you come across any speakers that fit my demanding standards & that meet your requirements for recommending them for me. Thank you
damn it, you make me wanna jump to vinyl from cds.
Don’t CD is the better format and it is way cheaper and less maintenance
Definitely switch it sounds so much better
Great video. I've had my UTurn orbit for almost 3 years and I love it! I think you said before you can spend your money on your system or spend it on your records. I'd rather spend it on the records.
Hoping someone could help me out. I got my first record player and have The Hobbit on vinyl. There’s a warning that states I could only use my setup should have a pickup for stereophonic records (diamond tip with .0005 to .0007 inch). My turntable has an Audio Technical AT3600l stylus. Could I play this record without ruining record or stylus? Hoping someone could shed some light
Audio Technica lists the AT3600L stylus as measuring 0.6 mil (6 thousandths of an inch or .0006) and having a conical diamond bonded tip. Seems like you should be good to go. Hope this helps and enjoy the soundtrack!
Awesome as usual! Great video guys!
Thanks for explaining what a pre amp is. I think I’m going to get this setup
Enjoy it! Thank you for watching.
Thank you for this Andrew! Just what I was looking for
Do most powered/active speakers and integrated amplifiers digitize the incoming analog signal before converting it back to analog (for digital volume control, bass management, etc)?
Is it worth the effort to try to preserve the analog signal from turntable to speaker output?
Thank you for this video! Really helped! I have my eyes set on the Kantos once I'm ready to upgrade. Really love your videos. They are top notch!
Would you say keeping the preamp separate is the way to go vs getting the u turn with it built in? I was kind of wanting it built it just to have less stuff but I’m getting lost in all the videos I’m watching haha. Also stuck between buying one of their higher end ones- I want the pretty finished wood- a fluance or the Audio Technica AT-LPW40WN.
I love the look and idea of easy listening with the u turn being a newbie, but if I’m gonna choose to spend $4-500 I definitely want to make sure I’m choosing wisely. There are so many naysayers on u turn who say go flunace but i love the idea of supporting american made too. Any who I’ll stop rambling but please assist if you see this, I’m so far down the rabbit hole!
Your video on the C62 made me consider a Crosley!! Thanks for all your inclusive and fun videos and showing you really don’t need to spend too much for a great product!
love your non-elitist take on audio equipment and enjoying audio. Your videos are colorful, informative and easily digestible
Cheers!
"The only person who has to like the sound of your system is you"
Thank you, I try to be as inclusive as possible for at the end of the day this is about fun and enjoying oneself.
I have this turntable and I've had it for three years now no problem with it. I would reccomend a uturn to anyone. You gotta pay extra to have built in preamp. I paid 40 dollars for uturn to add a preamp.
What is the best way to add a headphone amp to a vinyl system with an integrated amp?
Considering it's all analog you can just use RCA Y-splitters and split the turntable signal between your headphone amp and speaker system. It's dirt cheap too.
Does your integrated amp not have a headphone jack? I've never had one that didn't.
I didn’t follow the example with the headphones. How do you adjust the volume?
Amazing and very helpful video. Question, what would be the easiest way to have both headphones/speakers set up with only one phono preamp? (Schiit mani)
this video taught me plenty
Me interested in his JBL L100 Classic speakers instead.
Thanks 😎
Andrew - can you tell me what headphones are shown - they look fantastic - love your videos
How many times did you mention U-Turn...is this an ad for them?
DUDE! They sponsored the video. It was made in partnership with U-Turn, so yeah, they got mentioned.
I noticed on your Technics amp that you have the phono ground connection. Does the U-Turn phono player require a ground connection? Will you get feedback if you don't ground the phono player?
Very informative, thank you for this!
Great video(s)! I was hoping you can explain why getting an external pre amp for a TT even though it has one built in already, may help with the delivering better sound/ reproduction of the LP..as some suggest? And in what case is it worth it to by pass your built in TT pre amp? I have the Audio-Technica LP3(has pre amp) with a Yamaha RS-202 which does not have a phono pre amp, and Klipsch RP-400m speakers. Do you generally hear a marked improvement or should one focus on a stylus cartridge upgrade as a first step?
Wouldn’t a second hand technics be better quality?
Looking for my first record player and this has been by far the most helpful video I've come across.
Also good job on selling the Uturn. Been set on an AT120 but now im seriously reconsidering
Nice just bought a Marantz 7000n and B&W 606 Anniversaries, should get them in a month.
I know the Marantz has a phono preamp built in or whatever it’s called, so keen to buy a TT in the future and start collecting records.
I am a bit nervous with the vinyl I buy trying to know if it’s a good press or not
Not a fan of the exposed belt on u turn tables..also hate having to change speeds by moving the belt.. Extra unneeded wear and tear
Drinking game: Take a shot for every "U-Turn Orbit"

I got so hammered I wrapped my car around a tree and my wife lost her leg… now I run AA meetings and she’s married to my best friend
Very well made video, helped me a ton!
We can use the speakers for itself like for desk's without the Turntable System ?
My life needs that turntable
Is a slip mat even necessary on an acrylic platter?
No, but I included it because it’s in the box and I wanted viewers to know they can use it.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Always enjoy your vids, but actually on the U-Turn it is indeed needed (As per U-Turn). The arm is calibrated with the mat, since the U-Turn doesn't have an adjustable VTA, that 3mm comes into play. Yes, usually acrylic platters can run naked, not the U-Turn. That being said, replace the felt mat with an acrylic mat and you've accomplished the benefits of having the acrylic platter in the first place. I thought the video was a great introduction for those new to the vinyl hobby, keep up the good work :)
I’m old enough to have been around when LPs were "for real". This video reminds me of every reason why I ditched my records as soon as CDs were available and never looked back.
Why is that, curious to hear your story and what mediums you prefer ?
Amazing videos as always, Andrew! Quick question: is putting the Audioengine A2+ speakers you have on the same shelf or surface as your U-Turn Orbit Plus okay? With my set-up, I would have to have the speakers likely only two or three feet away from each other flanking the record player, and I'm afraid that playing them all on the same surface would create too much resonance and would impact the performance of the Orbit Plus. Do you think that's an issue and that I should get speaker stands, or should the heavy build of the Orbit Plus not make this a problem? Thanks so much for all you do - you just gained a new subscriber! :D
Nice to see a fellow goo goo dolls fan.
very well explained, thank you.
Excellent video! Precise information!
Thanks for watching!
Hey! I have a question for anyone who might be able to answer. I'm completely new to this stuff so sorry if this is a stupid question. Is there a way to put together a system that will allow you to use a standalone record player AND a standalone cd player? I don't want to get one of the cheap all in one system floating around but I didn't know if it was possible to have both separate mediums in one stereo system because I can't seem to find any information on the topic. I hope that made sense, thanks to anyone that can answer! (PS I'm posting this on a few videos do sorry if you see this comment more than once lol)
no mate. sorry
Instead of using powered speakers you can buy non-powered and an audio receiver which can handle multiple inputs. Be sure to do research first and have a plan regarding how much wattage and how many channels you will need. Your choice in receiver will determine how much flexibility you have in updating your whole system.
Yes you can that is called a hi fi system
hello bro want to ask, if the turntables do not use preamps only use amplifiers, is that okay?
Nope, Turntable, Preamp, Amplifier and Speakers, those are the things you need. Some turntables have built in preamps and if speakers are "active" or "powered" then that means they already have an amplifier built in.
Considering that I set up correctly a record player, can I listen to a record without having any other parts (like amp)?
You need an amplifier unless your speakers are powered.
everyone says to avoid devices with others integrated into them. That they dont sound as good as separate devices. I really dont see the point of getting a preamp, reciever, amplifier AND speakers but will do it if it means I get better sound. Right now I have the sony pslx310bt which has bluetooth so I just paired it with a marshall speaker, and it sounds good but could be louder I guess. Please someone let me know is it essential to get all 3 things or can I skip out on something without sacrificing sound quality
Saba Nawaz. You need it all
@@cityfantv-everythingmancit2946 yeea figured as much. Now contemplating if I should just get built in stuff or everything separately. Its so costly.
@Saba Nawaz. Go with what works best for YOU. If you like what you have and the way it sounds, then stick with it until you feel ready to upgrade. Separates have their place just like all in one systems do. Try not to get roped into doing what someone else says is the _only way_ .
How is the Sony pslx310bt? Is it worth 200? I’m just getting into buying vinyls and thinking about buying this one
@@andrewromero6913 its a good beginner/entry level turntable. I have no complaints except for the tone-arm. Its too lightweight and flimsy.
