I Want to give a huge shoutout to Lenny and gang at Death & Taxes and Cloze from Nihilum for giving us the inside scoop on this tale long consigned to history. Also big love to Hurricane for letting me use his footage and sending me HQ versions for the edit, what a hero.

    • @hifive5067
      @hifive5067 7 месяцев назад +5

      absolutely true, and I contribute this to the fact taht back then we did not have very good centralized knowledgebase websites (like wowhead is now) and addons were not as sophisticated. There's no chance we will ever get the same feeling playing mmo, as whe n WoW was in its virgin years, in vanilla

    • @Wheeljack678
      @Wheeljack678 7 месяцев назад +3

      You're right. It really had the vibe of an exciting, virtual world, and not "just" a game and a gameworld. Everything you did was something brand new. That still is technically the case for new MMOs as well, but in a way - many have done it before, in World of Warcraft.
      Playing the game in its early days was (sort of) like playing the old adventure games from Sierra back in the 90's with internet and no walkthrough an alt/tab away. Which I think really helped cement the feeling of discovery and excitement.

    It's such a small footnote. But the lengths Vodka had to go to in order to kill twin emperors should have given them the hint that it was impossible. Iirc vodka was accused of cheating because they ran 5 tanks 35 healers and killed it over hours. My understanding is the twin emperors are why enrage timers were added to the game. Same thing! Was on US-Hyjal during that time and we made it to Patchwerk which was our guild breaker. Guild broke up after many squabbles and fights around Patchwerk. I ended up stopping and returning during TBC and haven't stopped since. Vanilla to the end of TBC was a magical time for me of exploration, the unknown, and just having fun. Wotlk, while I loved it, was the immediate change I saw of something different...META rotations and clear as fast as possible. However, still love the game!

    I had no idea when my guild was raiding Naxx in 2006 I was one of very few players who even got an opportunity to kill any bosses in that raid. I was on a weird little RPPVE server called Scarlet Crusade in a guild called Dark Heaven. We certainly didn’t clear the raid, but I have great memories of those days. Naxx was a glorious time to be a raider back then. We only ever cleared up to Sapphiron, then TBC launched - but you mentioning guilds snatching every tank on the server it was REAL. We went into naxx with about 6 tanks in our guild, 4 really... we ended up at 4HM with about 13 ready to go tanks lmao. We unintentionally destroyed quite a few guilds and even snatched up 2 thunderfuries in the process which was huge because our server only had about 4 of them.
    My favorite naxx memory though? Our guild leader getting pissed off because the WoW South Park episode came out and over half our raid were just watching that instead and wiping on trash repeatedly lmao

    Loving this series. And while I didn't raid back then (and only sporadically throughout my playing and always very casually) I did hear about what it took. This is what people don't understand. The times are different between 2006 (or even 2009) and now. We have SO MANY guides - gear guides, stat guides, class guides, boss fight strats, videos, analysis and SO MANY TOOLS (such as addons) along with YEARS of knowledge - some of which probably have become SUCH common knowledge that we take it for granted.. When people go into Classic and say "THAT'S IT?? THIS is what all the fuss was about? It's not EVEN HARD!!" The collective knowledge has increased SO MUCH, the raids might as well have been done by babies back in 2006, compared to what we have now.

    I was class officer and raid officer in a Naxxramas raid guild in vanilla, although I personally didn't lead our Naxx raids but ZG, BWL and similar tier stuff. The amount of effort and dedication it took to herd 40 people through all the prerequisite raids and gearing and then herding them through Naxxramas itself burned me out on the game. It was insane how much effort it took to coordinate, as officers we literally raided 5 hours a day 7 days a week and that is pure raid time, not setup, farming mats, potions, buffs, etc. The non-officer guild members could take some days off at least, like when we were gearing new members in BWL or farming TF/Sulf mats in MC, but officers basically always had to be there.
    It was both a unique experience that I will always treasure, and it was the reason I never wanted to play competitive MMOs ever again after vanilla WoW. We were seen as legendary players by others on the server and the camaraderie between the top guilds was amazing, but the effort was draining, especially since we kept it up all the way through vanilla to get there. Prior to playing my WoW time I also played tournaments and competitive level in the original Counter Strike and while that was intense it was nothing compared to the sheer scale of 40 man raiding at that level.
    Anyway I burned out, quit for all of Burning Crusade, came back to clear Wrath at a casual level because I loved Ulduar so much and wanted to go through it, after Wrath I never raided again and I left WoW behind.
    All that said, I was in a "normal" Naxx level raid guild, IE one that could get server firsts, but we were no where near the level of the world first guilds, even we looked in awe at the stuff those guys pulled, we completed our stuff based on their work, without it we would have been nothing as we never built strats from the ground up or explored mechanics in that detail, we just built a well oiled machine for carrying out those strats the absolute madmen at the top of the top guilds created and published.

    Old WoW was quite the adventure. It was more than just the game itself though, it was a mix of the game, mid-2000s tech, and mid-2000s internet culture.

    I remember back when Ret downed Ouro and got the C'thun kill there were GMs floating around the boss rooms watching the kills happen to make record of it, the GM interaction back in the day was unmatched to how it is now with automated systems and outsourced support who barely interact with players anymore.

    I’m a former member of Overrated (infamous cheaters lol) and we lost some of our best members to DNT right as AQ fell. Looking back, what a time. We were definitely talking about “RWF” at the top end, but Preach was extremely correct in saying it was all on the server forums. But for those who were in the know, it was all the talk in Ventrillo. Strategies were harder to come by, but information was most definitely shared. Some of the best memories ever. DNT was such a presence back in the day, as was Vodka and Fury to us NA people. We were good, but they were great.

    As a warrior in vanilla i was paid 100g per boss just to tank and i wasnt even that geared. this was on top of my repair bill being paid for and funneled gear. I was poached from my guild and regret nothing.

    To put things into perspective why classic couldn't replicate the original experience: when I first raided mc in 2005, I had between 0.7 and 2.5 fps.
    I didn't need a flowchart or enchants, I needed higher single-digit fps.
    Only when aq40 came out did i buy a new pc and with its 20 fps, I first saw a spell truly "travel" to the target

    Players didn't have the knowledge, the resources, or the stable servers. It bears acknowledging that the servers were in REALLY rough shape back in the early days of WoW. Having entire raid days cancelled due to ping about 2000, or due to the world server going down meaning if anyone had to release they couldn't run back....
    Anyone who cleared raid bosses back in classic... deserves props for overcoming the servers even more than the bosses themselves.

    Thanks for the info into what happened. I remember following it at the time. On my server, Forlorn Legacy was the first guild to down Naxx. I am just pleased I got to raid it back then. We got to 8 bosses down before TBC was released. The equipment and connections we were using at the time really were an extra difficulty setting on their own.

    I remember when my buddy had this happen to him as a big raid tank and got snagged up. The guild he talked about getting him to change guild had him as a "trial" person and watched them dis enchant gear other new tanks could still use.

    I think a big part of the current way things are is that there is fully open PTR testing. Guilds are in there practicing all the bosses so they can just trounce the raid on the first day. We need a time where no one knows the mechanics day on of a raid going live.

    as someone who was raiding naxx back then and our guild cleared everything but thad before we started falling apart due to lack of motivation before BC, this story really really hit. I remember those struggles, i remember trying to get inside scoops. our first week in, we spent farming trash for boe's, raz and anub. after that we did faerlina, cleared noth and heigan. then we got maexxna, patch, and grob. it was a super exciting few months. we managed to clear 4 horsemen even, just because we had made friends from quite a few guilds and kept progressing long after many guilds had stopped just because they decided to wait for BC so their tanks joined us. after that, thad just ate us alive, we could never quite get him, lots of 10% wipes, but just could never find the groove
