      That is a cap and ball pistol. With the barrel pointing up you used a gunpowder dispenser. Put in the paper and ball compress with plunger then seal with wax. The hammer strikes a cap which sits on those little knobs. You might want to check the Springfield Armory. They also were licensed to produce the Colt Navy.

      Looks like a Pietta Colt, the brass part looks identical to this modern reproduction. imgur.com/gallery/nDjjE Only the barrel has a slightly different shape but the pins etc all look the same.

    Ok, so from what I have researched so far, I have come to the conclusion that it is in fact a gun made in the mid 1800s by a non US gunsmith, that is a euro model 1851 Colt Navy. Patent N stands for "Patent Navy". Basically its a Euro model 1851 Colt Navy made in the mid 1800s, not a 25-50 year old reproduction, but an actual mid 1800s Euro made Colt Navy. Som basically a gunsmith in Europe(likely Russia), copied the Colt Navy... Btw, the mid 1800s Euro 1851 Colt Navy has the 2nd finger rest also. The extended trigger guard allowed reins to be tucked where your middle finger would otherwise be when shooting from horseback. I believe the maker in Europe made this one with round barrel, and a different "dragoon" style hammer section as opposed to traditional style ones. That brass looks extremely nice, almost too nice to be from mid 1800s.
    You could get the spring replaced in it and get a nice 1 piece grip for it, and it would be perfect. I don't believe it will ever fire again, the metal integrity is too weak to try.
    Here is a similar example of it. Also included is a link to a 1 piece original nice grip that would go nicely on it.
    Gun example:

      I did not have all the detail of the gentleman above but I recognized this as some version of about an 1847ish colt. Search Walker Colt Black Powder Revolver or colt dragoon. They were black powder and lead ball percussion cap revolvers. They were the evolution step before cartridge revolvers.

  • @RichardAHolt
    @RichardAHolt 2 года назад +10

    Being a black powder gun, a measured amount of powder was 1st poured into a chamber of the cylinder. A paper or fabric patch was centered over the chamber with a lead round ball projectile then pushed into the chamber surrounded by the patch. The patch created a very tight fit for the ball in the chamber, which was then rammed up against the powder charge in the chamber using the lever device under the barrel. This same process was done for each of the cylinder's chambers. The groove to the right of the hammer was used to fit a percussion cap over a hollow nipple at the end of each of the cylinder's chambers. When struck by the hammer, the chemical in the percussion cap would ignite, passing through the nipple into the cylinder to cause the black powder to explode and projecting the round ball out the gun's barrel.

    So a couple of observations.
    1. The front end (barrel and loading lever) appears to be from a Colt 1851 Navy.
    2. Colt 1851 Navy revolvers were "cap and ball" or percussion ammunition systems. To load, you pour a measured amount of black powder in each cylinder chamber, place a wad, then your ball, and use the loading lever under the barrel to seat (push) each ball into the chamber.
    3. Your revolver, while still possessing an appropriate barrel and loading lever, appears to have been converted (or an attempted conversion) to use cartridges. The cylinder is bored all the way through for loading rounds through the rear of the cylinder, the hammer now has a "tooth" for striking the primers of cartridges, and the brass frame has had a portion removed on the right side so that bullets may be loaded from the rear. As a cartridge conversion, the loading lever on the front would no longer be used.
    4. Colt 1851 Navy revolvers did not use brass frames. Current day replicas do, and some Confederate copies did, but they are rare collectors items even in the states. This may have been fabricated specifically as part of the conversion, or is a modern replica part.
    5. The spur on the trigger guard is unusual. On revolvers of this era, this would be a common sight on a Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian, but not a Colt. It speaks again to some "custom" work being done on this revolver as it was being converted.
    Lots of guns originally manufactured as cap-and-ball were converted to fire cartridges after the fact. This has a lot to do with Rollin White's patent on the "bored through cylinder" expiring in 1869. This may be a period conversion, it may be a modern one. It's hard to tell from a video, but those are a few of the things I noticed from the video. I should also mention this is not a Colt factory conversion of an 1851 Navy. Those models, such as the Richards Mason conversion and the Thuer conversion, differ significantly from the revolver shown.
    Hope this helps!

    The extra finger rest on the trigger mechanism reminds me of LeMat black powder pistols prior to the American Civil War. It may be worth the investment in having a good restoring gunsmith take a look at it and perhaps preserve it....it most likely will never be fired again but the value and beauty of the pistol is it's history and wear and tear. You said it had a patent and NY on the cylinder but could it be NO instead...these were manufactured in New Orleans, Louisiana. You don't load paper loads and bullets from the back end, young colt.....it's black powder so there is a compression lever on the bottom of the barrel that will help you tamp down the powder charge and wadding and then a lead bullet. They were also manufactured in England and France during the middle 1800s so it makes sense that it would make it's way to Holland and other countries thru Europe. Super find..congrats.

    Civil War Confederate Griswold & Gunnison Percussion Revolver with custom finger rest. This excellent example of the Southern efforts to match the Colt Model 1851 Navy resulted in approximately 3,700 Griswold & Gunnison percussion revolvers. Or possible Rigdon & Ansley cartridge conversion revolver in .38RF Very rare.

    Still looking :D But I have found something that is a lot closer than my last post .
    historical.ha.com/itm/military-and-patriotic/civil-war/confederate-griswold-and-gunnison-36-caliber-percussion-revolver-of-the-navy-type/a/674-72395.s
    Looking closer I noticed the frame was gold (not on the navy or any others ) Also the barrel is rounded rather than squared off and the butt of it looks separate from the long barrel. As for the trigger guard finger spur , I think that was modified to suite the owner or decorative addition like some revolvers used in the Crimea war, so possibly had Russian influence at some stage or even Russian mafia > ??
    Maybe even parts from another similar pistol. Good luck

I am amazed that WD40 soaking for a year remove all that rust and dirt. Learn something every day. It's amazing to see how well the parts came out, especially the receiver. In case you or anyone else has the desire to fire it remember that uses black powder and not smokeless powder. If you use smokeless powder it will explode for sure! You could put in a couple of grains of black powder and no ball if you wanted to fire it without damaging it. Of course, that's if the barrel, cylinder, etc are in working condition. Even as a wall hanger it's one of the best finds.

    It looks like a reproduction colt from the 1850's. You might check with Dixie Gunworks in Tennesse, They sell all kinds of parts for these old guns. The Brass frame finish indicates it is a modern reproduction that is kind of styled after the Walker/ Dragoon model colts which were all in 0.44 caliber and had round barrels.. The confederates made some brass framed copies during the American civil war. So you might check sites that talk about the arms of the American Civil war.

    Such a cool historical find for sure! I don't really know much about guns but cleaning up old rusty metal I've got something to pass along to Heni (spelling?). A good trick to try is using a mix, or cocktail (not the drinking kind) of not only a good penatrating oil but Also use automatic transmission fluid. This will be VERY helpful for breaking down the rust crusticles and allowing for the further cleaning and restoration. Again, super cool historical find! 🤙🤙🤙❤❤❤😀😃😁

    as HQCOMMS65 said, looks to be a Navy Colt Percussion revolver, mid to late 1800s, due to the screws, with a long nose barrel and "Gentleman's grip" so its possible it could have been a naval or trade ship captain's own personal gun. Seeing as New York was once named New Amsterdam, and that New York had a great trade relationship with Amsterdam, its very possible that it was a captain had an argument on or near the dock, its washed up and moved, while drunk! Or canoodling in the red light with the wrong woman... who knows! Either way its an awesome find!

    Im quite sure this is a Russian or Russan Empire ( also Helsinki Finnland ) copy from a colt No.1 or No.2 from 1850 -1860. Colt sold these liscenses. Tula Gunsmiths ( Russian Gunsmith Petr Gultyakov ) sometimes fitted this Trigger guard ( middle finger rest ). It was a belt or saddle gun. I've sent you Infos over messenger.

    The Gun is most likely from 1850-1870’s time. Probably.31, 36, or 44 caliber. Check with Navy Arms Company it appears similar to the Black powder pistol I bought from them years ago, Also send picture to a gun museum and inquire! When you send picture have a ruler in pictures. Sometimes they can do verification of an original, replication or modified by the length of the barrel. Also make sure to include pictures of any screws. Guns only used slot head screws until recently, Phillips (cross head screws) indicate repaired or replicated guns.
    This would make a nice Wall Hanger.

    Colt 1851 or 1861 Army revolver, but might be a Navy. Should be .36 cal., and you should be able to get replacement grips. It could be a Uberti or Pietta replica as well, and grips made by either company should fit as both companies reproduction replicas are very well made!

    Definitely based on Samuel Colt’s percussion revolvers design, but the brass frame indicates it is not an actual Colt. I would guess it is a European copy of a Colt Dragoon. The spur trigger guard was more popular in Europe. If there are any legible markings that might help identify it. Belgian guns for example would have proof marks. As would modern Italian replicas.

    Did you search through u.s. patents? It could be a gun that never got produced. Like an invention someone got a patent for, but it went nowhere? Maybe?
    New York patents is a good start. Trace the patent number, see who filed for it. ?? Good luck!!

    I shoot black powder pistols mostly 1851 & 1860 Army & Navy style, you should know the brass frame has been modified or retrofitted with a Cartridge Conversion, and it looks like it was built from a few other pistols if you can post some detailed photos of both sides it would help.. also look on the barrel there should be some marking on it.

    Looks to be a black powder .44 caliber. There are many reproduction "kit guns". They kick like a mule when fired. The leaver under the barrel is used to pack the wad. This would shoot mini balls.

  • @yvetteabrego5930

    So Bondi, the lever you pulled doesn't load the gun. That wouldn't be efficient. What it is, is the ejector for the empty cartridge. So you load it, and when you cock it, it lines up a bullet to fire. Then you use the ejector to get the used cartridge out. Us Texans love our guns! Congrats on the find.

    Looks like my colt 1851 confederate navy. Mine is a replica made by an italian company. The 1851 navy was made during the american civil war in the south, but due to a lack of material they made the part that holds the cylinder out of brass

  • @focusst171
    @focusst171 3 года назад

    I think it’s an 1851 Navy six shot percussion revolver.
    I don’t think that is a trigger extension. I think it’s the metal insert from what have been the front of the handle that’s become bent.
    I can send a pic of what I mean if you like?
    Thanks

    I believe that that gun is a 1858 Confederate Pistol.
    The only reason I say that is because they were running out of metal in the South and they started using brass.
    If you look at 1860 pistol the barrel is very long in the whole gun Was made up of metal. And that would have been the Union pistol.

  • @OjMackarel
    @OjMackarel Год назад

    Modern firearms are packed in grease when they’ve been stored for years. Brass is a softer metal ; the barrels are sometimes charcoalized which hardens the steel better and may have been better than blueing. The cylinder is six so slang would be six gun . The numbers were hand stamped. I didn’t know Hannie did this great job men .

  • @richmiller2711
    @richmiller2711 3 года назад

    the pistol looks like it could have been made in the southern states during the civil war0, they used a lot of bras because they lacked iron. The loading ram looks like a colts but the cyulinders were either bored out or replaced with a cartridge cylinder which would probably date it to about 1870 or so since smith and Wesson owned the patent on cartrige / bored thru cylinders. and the hammer doesn't look like it has a cup for the percussion cap which were pretty standard to keep tiny splinters under control. Unless I am missing something the hammer looks like it may be for a rimfire cartridge.. I am not an expert , though. It doesn't look like a modern reproduction to me.
