Can you maybe do a episode on leveling and lifting a truck the good and bad way to modify your off road truck. There is a lot of misconceptions of what will work.
Well that would have to be pretty specific to one model, it's not universal. The reason you think theres many misconceptions is because there's various ("good") ways to lift or level your truck but it's different for every truck. Not drastically different but minor differences. Just look specifically for the truck you want to mod
You have the best car videos on RUclips by a mile but I have to say that you got to almost 700k subs simply off of, "Hello everybody and welcome." It is the best intro of any on RUclips and I can't speak for everyone but I know sometimes I watch your videos just to hear the intro, I don't even care what the topic is (I mean I know you'll have me interested in it by the end anyway). For anyone who is curious, Engineering Explained is at Ladee Flats just outside of Estacada, OR. He is at the Rock Quarry which is about halfway up. Ladee Flats has a gravel trail going all the way to the top with many offroad trails ranging from easy to hard splitting off from it. if you are in the area I'd suggest taking it out, but if you want to attempt the offroad trails I'd suggest taking a rig with 4x4 or have a friend with a winch. Beware that if you don't purchase the OHV trail pass you can get ticketed, but the pass is like 12 dollars which is a much better deal than a 120 dollars for the ticket.
Dude, I just saw the Facebook page and I never knew you went to NCSU! They have a satellite program here at UNC Asheville that allows you to transfer into the engineering program at State after two years. The world gets a little bit smaller every day.
I thought it was pretty great that this uploaded during the couple of days where the majority of the United States is covered in storms (and therefore mud) lol. I just did some light offroading in my 2004 4x4 Kia Sorento. That's a surprisingly capable little SUV.
When you are walking your forward head posture is very visible. You should become aware of this and learn to fix your posture before arthritic changes ruin your neck
google deep neck flexor exercises to help fix this posture. One exercise you can do is called chin tucks, you can do it when driving. Head on head rest, can you believe its possible? Then nod head down slightly to give yourself a double chin, hold 1 second. while Smashing back of head/ upper neck into head rest. repeat 20 times and do multiple times when driving during the day. aight

+MeLexdy I wish they sold actual cheap trucks like that in America. In Afghanistan we had Hiluxs and TATA Xenons and they were "POS" interior wise, but truck wise they always got the job done. Really wanted to bring one back.
+Frank Magana Aka the cheapskate, cost-cutting version of LSD. A Torsen LSD with a high bias ratio e.g. 3:1 would be an ideal synergy when combined with a well calibrated TC system, since the Torsen would actually send more torque to the high traction wheel. For instance, if 1 wheel was off the ground and the TC caught the wheelspin with the brakes and the torque going to the spinning wheel was say, 1000Nm, a 3:1 torque bias would have 3000Nm sent to the high grip side on the ground.
Torsen means extra quality hardware aka more $$$ cost. Some extra code in the ABS computer is relatively cheap. Sure, there's the aftermarket, just be prepared to fork out quite a few hundred USD in the process at the very least, not including installation costs.
+GnosticDevice The trouble with locked diff is that it's useless for the road, whereas a TC and torsen combo can be good almost anywhere anytime, especially on the road.
+Josh Leviton (Outlaw Patriot) why M/T? A/T is more controlled rpm. with M/T you will control the clutch and the rpm and the results wont be as accurate as the A/T
I have an 04' Envoy and it has the options of; 2HI, A4WD, 4HI, 4LO. When should I use those options? My understanding is that 2hi is good for normal dry pavement, a4wd is good for when it's raining bad, 4hi for when theirs snow on the ground, and 4lo is to just get out if you're stuck?
Nice to see a 4x4 trd sport in the review, it did as well as my trd 4x4, I took mine in the MUD, water up to bumper lines or a little less, with the understanding this is a review pretty much light duty 4wd drive activity
I agree with EE here, the difference of terrains were enough to demonstrate the point, anything harder would add up more variables (human error/skills) which would contaminate more the data.
When doing Sand Drags and Mud Bog racing, I always started in 4-Lo for torque and 2nd gear for wheel speed. Always got a much faster and stronger launch. Actually won a mud bog in Arizona with my 1982 Toyota long bed PU.
These test vehicles, where are they taken from and what is your responsibility for it, is it easy going just a demo have fun? Or what? Usually people thank the dealer or the owner so what is the story with the vehicles you test?
I just got one, upgraded from an older Tacoma. Good god they did everything right. And I mean EVERYTHING. They are beautiful trucks and I'm averaging 19mpg in city WITH 4x4. I was getting 16 with my old 2wd taco 😂
This had an "auto lsd" which is just a fancy way of saying open differential that uses the brakes to try to make it function like a limited slip. It seems to have no where the capabilities of a true limited slip, and this system can be achieved in any vehicle with an open differential by pressing on the brakes when a tire is spinning. This system is very different from a locked differential, which forces both wheels to spin at the same rate, and time when engaged. Limited slip forces both wheels to spin the same way, but they don't have to match up like in a locked differential. Seems odd they call it auto LSD when you manually have to turn it on each time you want to use it. Maybe the auto is in that you don't have to press on the brakes?
@SBow311 Although the Sport is a bit overpriced many people will never use the locker and prefer the hood scoop, and painted fender flares and bumpers. I have a Sport and actually off road often out in the Nevada desert when I'm looking for a good, safe place to go shooting, and I've gone on mild to medium trails and sand dunes. I've never once even needed 4Low because the Sport has handled everything easily on 4High.
+Ratkill9000 It is a brand new truck. There haven't been any reports of rust on the new models. The old Toyota trucks did have rust issues on them because of recycled metal that had rust in it and wasn't treated properly. That problem has since been solved.
Typically not considered by most consumers when deciding amongst the typical big 3 American truck brands but these Toyotas are very capable machines. Combined with Toyota's reliability they're at the very least worth a test drive if you're in the market for a full sized truck.
+Jnm1220 just remember NEVER EVER use 4hi or 4low on bare pavement, it locks the front end to the rear end and when your going around corners something has to give, so if your lucky (and most of the time you are) your tires will skip and jump, if your NOT lucky, stuff breaks like u-joints, axles, or your transfer case.
I had to laugh at your snow comment. We had 6-9in last weekend in south central Michigan. It's going to be 70° Sat. lol. Great vid. Altho I'm not a huge fan of Toyota the midsize has been around in the USA for many years. Hence the popularity of the 350 swap. It was built for it from the factory...

i have to buy short bed because toyota dont offer double cab long bed with manual transmission just in the short bed, but short bed is not that bad just one foot less from long bed
@@YOTALIFE631 the TRD pro offroad model only comes with a short bed and double cab. I like my truck better it has the access cab and longer bed. If the bed was 2 feet longer its a Tundra, the older style since mine is an 06
I'm guessing you filmed this up at Silverfox? out in Estacada, I wrecked my truck up there, on the way down the paved road, Brakes locked up, and the trailer I was pulling pretty much pushed my fullsize chevy straight off the road, you can probably still tell where it happened, it was wet so there were no tire marks, but it did scrape the pine needles off of the road, and it scraped up the boulders at the bottom of where I went down, and the dirt as well, next time you are up there keep a look out for the damage done off the side of the road (The truck isn't there anymore, we had it recovered and I drove it for 3 more months before I sold it)
Great Video, Lsd seems pointless, pretty much the same as traction control. Something I think not used very much other than a gimmick. 4hi/4lo with a locker and you're good to go pretty much anywhere.
C Steele sometimes you want both, we were in the maze district in canyonlands and I had triple lockers and my buddy had a rear locker but his brothers frontier had none and having that tc really saved the day in the slow crawling areas...except the time he needed maxtrax
Patrick Rich Every situation is diff. I've always done fine with locker in the rear, traction control off and sometimes on, as it really does help in some situations. I'll admit don't know much about lsd but seems to me another ad on not really needed if you already have the ability to turn off your traction control. Cheers
A-LSD is bunk to a certain extent, but it does work. So what you need to change pads, that is easier than opening the rear axle. I've played with it a little on my Tundra, A-LSD seems to work about the same as the trac-lok on my JGC, they both make the same 11 mark on the road.
It's scientific in that the tests were valid in the real world, with real-world variables. I like it! Good to see something finally make it over The Hill of Controversy, too! :D
I think 4 high vs 4 low the advantages of 4 low is that with an auto trans, you will not have as much torque converter slippage thereby lowering auto trans temps, if you have a stick shift 4x4, it is also easier on the clutch. So for low speed running 4x4 low also has advantages in taking some off the stress off the vehicle drive train.
You would of really enjoyed testing the old Jeep CJ 5 's I used to run off road . Truly phenomenal traction machines I pulled many a K 5 Blazer & International Scout stuck on the trails .
I'd like to see this comparison in Winter. I get tired of people here in Alaska insisting that 4WD help them on the ice, or that they can "stop on a dime" b/c they have 4WD.
the dealership should have let you use TRD Off Road, with crawl control and multi-terrain select, with the locking rear diff. the tires have Kevlar sidewalls, and off-road tuned shocks.
+Mark Murarescu I have the trd offroad and I'll admit I don't go offroad too much but the price was about the same between that and the sport and you get more with the offroad in my opinion... Just my two cents
could you make an explanation on how toyota did the 4hi/4low switch? and how does the 4low reached the end faster? or maybe more explanation on switching from 2wd to 4wd. i know i asked alot on your vids, but it seems that your channel is one of the most informative channel I've seen in RUclips. cheers Jason.
One thing he doesn't mention. With the sport model of the tacoma, when in 4Lo all electronic aids are turned off which can be harmful when you're in mud or snow because it leaves you with two completely open diffs front and back. In 4Hi you at least still have the autoLSD that will send more power to the wheel with traction.
+Engineering Explained well welcome to the best state! I'm going to college at OSU Cascades in Bend now, and starting to get into working on my own vehicles. Have an 03 Explorer with the V8 and hopefully going to get an 05-09 Outback soon.

great video. Could you by any chance do a video explaining when to use 4 high vs. 4 Low and how the turning radius is affected by using 4hi and 4lo
+mesa620 Turing radius isn't affected much, unless you start locking axles.
Cool demo. Imagine adding lockers front & rear.
Beautiful truck. Love the video. Simple and straight to the point. A little mud hole would of been nice though!
You should do this test or similar test with the new F-150 to compare how it performs with the performance of the Tacoma. Thanks!!
+Mark Murarescu I see more Toyotas with TRD than not..
could you make an explanation on how toyota did the 4hi/4low switch? and how does the 4low reached the end faster? or maybe more explanation on switching from 2wd to 4wd.
i know i asked alot on your vids, but it seems that your channel is one of the most informative channel I've seen in RUclips. cheers Jason.
he basically did by explaining there is more torque in 4lo
spawn fangt yeh thats why i said that, how did the 4lo make more torque? In what way do the 4lo has more torque than the 4hi
Gearing he also said that. Smaller gear. Spins more but puts out more torque. Bigger gear. Higher speeds
spawn fangt ok i see that. Thanks for the explanation spawn fangt!
Check out my video on transfer cases linked in the video description (or the card in the top right of the video. This explains how the system works.
Neat video, cool to see the differences so plainly
Toyota are the kings of off road. They have been used all over the world for a long time
+Gary Woodgate Would rather a patrol over a toyota anyday
+BMX73THE2ND Maybe they're better but there's alot more Toyotas used worldwide. Even in Iraq where we had land-rovers, the Taliban had Land cruisers.
I'm guessing you've never drove a jeep
+John Smith good guess but I have. they're cheap and rattly. feels like you're driving in an egg shell
I love Toyota trucks! Thank you for another quality video!
I had no clue you were from Oregon! Hood River born and raised here! Love your videos!
+Flightagressor97 That's awesome! I've been out here 4 years now, love this state!
+Engineering Explained well welcome to the best state! I'm going to college at OSU Cascades in Bend now, and starting to get into working on my own vehicles. Have an 03 Explorer with the V8 and hopefully going to get an 05-09 Outback soon.
Hello from a fellow Oregonian!
Love your videos, no surprise your channel is doing so well!

I really like the forest in the background.
Great seeing the different modes in real world situations. Great video.
Just so you know... You rock! :) Thank you for your uploads and keep them coming! Very informative and useful information.
i bet you had a blast with this video
That color is beautiful on that truck
Great video! Thoroughly enjoyed seeing what the 4x4 trd sport could do.
Very useful and simple demonstration. Thank you
Really interesting and fun video
I hope you will make more off-road testing videos with other SUV's and trucks
Toyota explains all this in the owner's manual, and in the little card on the driver side sun visor.
Great experimental video, I always wondered what were the differences!
