My option: you don't have friends who 4x4, and are uncomfortable in groups, so you just do it yourself. I don't crazy with advanced stuff because I am often alone out there. Moderate trails are usually the most I'll do. Especially since I don't have a spotter, and often have to get out and do my own spotting. I've learned quite a bit on my own and watching videos. The thing I have no experience with is recovery, since I haven't needed it, and hope to never need it (again with moderate trails, this seems unlikely). My biggest thing is I sometimes don't know the condition of a trail until I attempt it. And often turning around isn't feasible. I try my best to get info on a trail before doing it, but conditions can change quite a bit in the SouthWest.
That's a sensible approach.

Would love to see a vid debating LED light bars vs traditional round lights (pros vs cons) for overlanding. Love your vids, Ronny!
Light bars draw way less power, are brighter, cover more area, and offer better color. The only thing going for single halogen lights is price
I agree, halogen has the price going for it, everything else goes to the light bar, with the exception on looks, they look horrible to me but man does it light up the night when I use it in the mountains!

LEDs reflect back really badly. I prefer incandescent, especially for moving. Lighting up the campsite is another thing. I have a lot of fog (Blue Ridge Mountains) and in the rain led is a no go.

love your videos - always something to learn (I didn't know my 30 year old high-lift jack was invented as early as 1905).
As someone who has been 4wd driving since 1976 (60 series SWB Nissan Patrol was my first vehicle) and always travelled solo (with my wife - and RFD radio back in the pre-UHF era) I would add another downside to "escorted tours" apart from the cost - you are stuck with people you have never met before for the duration of the tour!
Being stuck at Tibooburra in the same camping gound with an RACV travelling tour with all roads closed (after we had come down from Nappa Merrie in the wet) was excrutiating.
Planning on doing the Canning next year - and even then we are contemplating doing it solo (we have been stuck three times since 1976 where I had to rely on someone else pulling me out - old Strezlecki in the wet, Chambers Pillar, Mount Dare, Arkaroola , High country from Bulla side of Sterling, etc. etc.).
Most impressed by the couple in a Land Cruiser who quietly came into the circus at Dalhousey Springs one year (school holidays) and camped next to us - they had just come across the Simpson solo and were heading for the Canning (whilst the Land Rover club of Victoria were holding whip cracking competiitions before they struck up the courage to take their twenty vehicles (plus one Toyota support vehicle) the other way to Birdsville.

Always learn a heap Ronny watching your stuff. Im in NE Arnhem Land not a huge variety up here its either dry and dusty or wet and boggy, with the customers corrugations of course.

Just rode in a convoy in CA. The convoy told me if I got stuck I gotta find my own way home. It was my first time off-roading in the snow. They drove 40mph through single lane wet mountain roads through rain and snow. I stopped following them. Stopped and enjoyed the snow, 1hr later no one came back. They weren't kidding! My truck has everything needed to off road safely but I'm not risking my life for their ego. I'll learn on my own instead.

The other very important reason for going with a mate or others is if there is an emergency or you do fatal damage to say the drivetrain. Great video. One day when I get over to WA, I will have to look you up.

I have watched more than my fair share of your videos and they are very helpful even in the US just about everything applies besides the tire pressure only because i use psi and I don't understand the other measurements

I've been lucky enough to learn from my mates how to avoid the areas where I'm most likely to get stuck. I've not been stuck in my open diff rwd Isuzu once (except the time I fishtailed and ploughed into a sand bank but that wasn't really offroading😅) and I'm running 195/80R14s on 250kpa constantly, never airing down

I‘m from Switzerland. Here it’s difficult to go Offroading especially in my part. A Friend has an old Subaru Forester, he bought that for 2000 bucks ($). We bought cheap body lift blocks (from ali express)and a set of bigger at tires. We often go for a drive with his two sons, where we look for abandoned forestry roads where no dog walkers are, so at night. It‘s mostly illegal, we drive around, have fun and then we just send it until we get stuck (wich happens quickly ond most of the times). Completely unprepared, stupid. Then the adrenaline rush, if someone could see us, kicks in. Then we collect sticks and stones and fill in the holes we are stuck in. And send it again. Sometimes we see a piece if muddy road and we get in. We know after15 meters we get stuck, slide towards trees. Only one time we needed to ask a farmer to help us with a tractor, paid hom 100 bucks. We just said the youngest had urgently to go take a dump and we got lost. What helps is that we go in a different area, so the numberplates show we are not from around the corner. It worked so far. We are probably the most unprepared, unexperienced and stupid „offroaders“. But two 45 year old friends andthe 13 and 15 year old all feel like teenagers. Enjoyable stupidity. Sadly the car won‘t make it through the next gov check, so we have to dump it soon. We‘ll plan the final drive this summer. A offroad fun rally where all the other cars will be landcruisers and other real offroaders. 6 days through the alps, from Austria to France and then it ends in Mallorca Islands. We plan to bring a plastic bags to carry the number plates home by train from wherever the car dies. We love the car and we decided it deserves an honorable death

A big plus with a 4WD training course and program is that although you may be in a big group but it's a good place to meet other people who are at the same level as you to go out with that's not gonna take you anywhere out of your depth

get out and fail is the best way (without breaking parts or rollover but thats a big plus if you have deep pockets)

There’s another option, join the Army Reserve, the Corps of Transport, get professional instruction in all aspects of off road driving, in a variety of vehicles, with all the kit, and get paid for it.

How much is too much in terms of Kms ? As a beginner I don't want to buy anything more than $10,000 and most of the diesel vehicles are looking at 300k+ . I know diesels go forever but I still would like confirmation !
Depends on vehicle, for a modern dual cab no more then 400 but for an older patrol or land cruiser it doesn’t really mater
@@lukedontknow9283 I can confirm the TD42+T just goes and goes, engines on 910,000 odd kms, had to swap the body on the ol Patrol but still on the same engine. Just like any vehicle, taking the time maintaining and spending the coin servicing is well worth it in the long run

hi Ronny it's justus from Namibia, i own a Mitsubishi triton doublecab diesel 3.2 4x4. I'm having a problem when ever i drive on gravel road my car is not stable on the road, i replace the rear shocks with the Monroe gas shocks but stil the same problem, please i need ur help which shocks ur the best please.

Yeah he got these quite a while ago. He talked about getting new tyres in a video ages ago but isn't gonna review them until at least 55,000 km he reckons.

To save you 10 minutes of video, its simple, the way to gain offroading skills is to get out there and go offroading, hands on is the only way you will learn, and over time you'll gather skills and tools to help keep you going and you'll be able to pass on the knowledge you have gained to other noob's.
