Whether you're a DIYer or just love tinkering in the workshop, this guide will teach you:
1️⃣ Why a pallet-busting tool is a game-changer.
2️⃣ The importance of metal detecting for hidden nails.
3️⃣ How to preserve valuable center beams in pallets.
4️⃣ Safety measures you absolutely can't skip.
I'll also showcase a time-lapse of me breaking down a pallet and reveal the final wood yield from 20 pallets. Stick around to learn how to handle pallets like a pro, and maybe even pick up some ideas for your next woodworking project.

One quick little 'cheat' to make getting all the metal off the magnet easier... slip a sandwich baggie over the magnet before you start. Then when you're done, just peel it off, and the metal will come right off with it.
Very smart!
Putting the magnet in a paper cup also works well.
Great tips !
The first time I see that someone actually telling about the remaining metal in the nail holes. 👍
It's some annoying little pieces too if your pallet used that nail style.
There are small, not expensive gadgets available that you quickly run over a piece of wood. If there is a piece of nail, screw or whatever in the wood it will bleep. They can be viewed on the WWW. Ideal for those who use pallet wood.
@@johnlewis9745Did you watch the video? He uses one.
I would add one tip: work both of the outside stringers before you pry the center ones. This will keep the louse end from swinging up and you won't get as many bent nails on that last pry.
You are right that is how I do it and I have done hundreds upon hundreds of them
Very nice, never would have known about the type of nails that leave the back spikes until it was too late. I put my magnet in a small plastic bucket, then you just need to lift it out of the bucket and the metal drops off, no picking them one-by-one or getting shavings poking through my gloves.
Use pallet buster to lift wood then go through pallet with reciprocating saw..Keeping nail heads in gives a perfect rustic look.Very few of my customers want the nails completely removed. Still an enjoyable video and you stress the importance of wearing safety glasses which is a MUST!!!! Greetings from murky dark damp eastern England.
Thank you. You made it look easy. I plan to build a garden shed & chicken coop from reclaimed pallet lumber I’m going to use an old time radial arm saw with the power head vertical and a carbide rotary planer. I hope I have no problems with the occasional nail. Also, thinking about making parquet flooring from the nicer boards. Anyway. Thanks again.
What I find too be the most difficult ones are oak sometimes it is easier just cut the ends off usually I can get the middle without to much difficulty
I'm going to use pallet bits as interior wall coverings. Then I plan on glueing them together and make some furniture etc. That should get me started. Btw thanks for the tips!
I only work with recycled wood. Mostly pallet wood and I have two tools that I use to remove the nails. first I use a nail punch and the nails are pulled using a Blacksmith tongs to pull the nails.
I have asked Santa for a Pallet Buster, But I will have to special order it and that will have to wait until after the Holidays are over. Because I live on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Stack 3-4 together with clamps and turn the stack on edge to put through the plainer
X, I'm
Thank you.
I don’t know where you live, i.e. urban or rural, but you might consider making a variety of bird houses for your garden, your friends gardens and for the schools in your area. The teachers usually make an ecology lesson around it and the children love it. Here in the UK we have a serious problem with a decling European hedgehog population, so many people make homes for them. But that might not apply to you. If you have children who are old enough get them to help you. Directions for birds and hedgehogs are on the WWW.
Nice laying the pallet wood back down and using the remaining pallet to knock the nails through , I learnt something 2 day hello from down under. New sub here pallet wood = Free wood , I only use HT ( heat treated) pallets have seen people use treated pallets that contain lots of nasties.
Thank you!
Thia is pallet king. Subscribed.
I've found what metal swuff that's left behind won't harm any cutting blade it's brocken off nails that do the damage the main course of this is not removing then straight away , my reason for telling you this as most other materials ie manmade boards have metal particles inbeded within them and this takes along time to dull a blade or cutter!
Interesting. Thanks.
I use recycled pallets for making Garden furniture and planters and even handrails.
I don't bother with planning or sanding but I do paint them with garden fence paint because it hides the dirt and discolouration of used pallets.
I'm wondering why companies stopped having them returned but it could be due to the new hazardous chemical you talk about.
I realize this is an older video, but if you're still looking for projects to do with the pallet wood, you could build a geodesic dome greenhouse.
Those barbed ones are the bane of my existence lol. Literally every single pallet in my neck of the woods is held together with nothing but those buggers.
I gave up digging them out and just zip the boards off the stretcher with a saw. If I need longer boards, I just shiplap and glue two butts together.
I just use a 5/8 hole bit after removing the auger bit. Use another board with a hole already drilled for a guide (since the bit will slip). Then plug all the holes with a 5/8 dowell.
Love to know the best way to get staples out. Because I'm concerned about those ruining my saw, planer and joiner.
Build a Potters Bench! Awesome vVdeo! I have four pallets I want to break up, so that I can build one from the remains for my new Greenhouse! Now I know of some great ways to do it while preserving the boards, thanks to you! ; ) Thanks again and please have a great day!
Oh great idea!
@@DrWD40 Yes indeed! Time to break up some pallets! ; ) lol..
I was shown that you bang each corner of the pallet by lifting it it and just hit the floor with a corner,
. This loosens the nails and makes them easier to remove the nails.
Great video, I use a gas chainsaw ,I use the wood in my home wood stove .I am cautious where I put the cold ashes, the nails can puncture my automobile tires n lawnmower also . Iam going to use ur way so I can use ashes in my stone driveway n lawn.God bless yall real good.
Might be able to make a sifter of sorts for the ashes or a magnet like i used to remove the nails after burning!
With that pile you can build a country kitchen table with the 2+4 as legs an table support thirty quid each
No such thing as cheating when it comes to demolition 😊
Hey DrWD40 - Excellent info! One question: Do you only drill out the hole from the screws with barbs? Or do you drill out all holes that you removed fasteners from?
I ended up drilling out all holes to be safe
Another thought is raised bed planter boxes , if the timber is treated . ("""""")>
I believe they are only heat treated
Hey man, put your magnet inside a bag or sock or something robust THEN pick up your nails... then u just have to pull the bag off and everything metal releases easy
Insulation for your garage
Small lengths or left overs make wooden large wall clocks
Oh that's a cool idea! I just looked up some examples
Make a above ground pond ,then use a pond liner fill with water and fish
Nice!
You can make a fire in the woodstove!
I forget that I’m a decent engineer sometimes, I can make tools I don’t need to spend so much 😂
Thanks for the video!
where do you get 50 cent drill bits???????
No joiner. No problem. Take 5 boards that u trim on ur table saw to the same width. Use 2 squares to make sure they are square while clamping at the ends. Now run them through ur planer together as a solid board. planer.
Have you got a link for the metal detector please
Here you go! amzn.to/37mCd6t
Has anyone used a pneumatic nail punch to drive the nails out?
Doll house ,wooden wagon ,toys
What do you do with all em nails?
Currently in the "nail" box 😂
What tool is that buster? See no link anywhere.
Google…
Hmmm I missed the ads here dangit
You made busting pallets fun even though it means a bit of work , here is an thought , why not make a out door table and 2 benches for out door eating . just a thought . (""""")>
Oh great idea! I could use some patio furniture
Daily 100 pcs can we do
Weigh those rusty scrap nail in you could get some cash even if only tenner
How is it cheating?
Right? Unless there are rules to busting apart a ballet, no tool or method that you use is cheating.
