  • Schools in Methuen, Massachusetts, and other parts of the U.S. are banning the use of cellphones during class time. Eight states so far have passed laws or issued some sort of policy to curb phone use. Jessica Saum, an elementary school teacher and fellow at the Association of American Educators, joins CBS News with more.

When I was in school parents had to call front office to get messages to us or take us out of school early. Most times a note from parent was dropped off to front desk before school started to give staff a heads up. No phones were available to students for many many years. And we also had crazy people calling in boom boom threats ECT ...

There needs to be a federal ban on cell phone use in the classroom. Parents are a problem too b/c they will complain that their kids need them in an emergency, but the data shows schools are safer now than they have ever been in history...

The Paranoid PTA Mommies need to let go of my kid needs a phone in case of emergency. If there is an emergency at home, that can be routed through the school office. If there is an emergency in school, the staff will handle it and call the parent if necessary. There is no reason for a pre-HS kid to have a phone in school. As for HS kids, the phone gets locked up at the first bell and only taken out of locker or backpack at lunch.

The teachers should just tell the students to put them at the side of the classroom before class. That's what the teachers of my children did. If anything horrible happens at school, I want to make sure my children have access to their phones regardless of what anybody else says or thinks.

Best question. As a teacher in high school, I have fought this battle for an entire year. No school can help reduce phone use without every adult backing the plan. Teachers can't do it alone. Schools have to be serious about the policy instead of piecemeal.

If a student got a cell phone out while I was teaching , I confiscated it for the day. If they had an emergency, the school office could deal with it. Their parents could call the school office in an emergency also.

There are lots of less-than-entertaining moments in a school day. That's normal, whether it's school, work, or housekeeping. Students are addicted to being entertained, wanting to be on their phones all the time for the almost infinite choices in entertainment that it offers. This is NOT normal, or healthy. Dealing with things that aren't entertaining is part of growing up. These phone addicts will never grow up unless the learn to deal with normal, sometimes boring, sometimes exciting, life. No job will let them be on their phones all day. And adult life is filled with obligations that require attention, whether they're boring or not. Allowing kids unlimited access to their phones is a serious mistake, whether they're at home or in school.
