  • Thousands of low-wage temporary farm workers from Mexico and the Caribbean have been a boom for the local economy, but the town's transformation is not without its challenges. This is the story of one migrant worker town and how people are learning to get along. Mostly.

These farms are NOT mom and pop operations. They are HUGE INDUSTIAL operations with millions in profits.Cheap farmers refuse to pay even minimum wage and all levels of govt are complicit in it.

Harry Nykorotapick Thks for the insight. Same here in Vancouver. The Temporary Foreign worker Program has transformed the Lower Mainland. Harper policies favored big business and big farms, workers were exploited ...I was shocked at the extent ! Both Surrey and Richmond are now known as ethnic enclaves but that misses the point. Labor Rights have been ignored, rolled back or gutted.

Let's make it clear. I for one respect migrant workers as we respect all other workers and all other human being.. THEY SHOULD COME HEALTHY AND GO HEALTHY. When documented migrant workers come to work on contract (for money of course), they should go with the $'s after work per contract. Period. During working periods, they should respect our LAW as we all Canadians do. NON-doc foreign workers must be deported, again, per our LAW. May they be allowed to come back with papers? I really don't know what to say. Maybe, this is a "one-time" exception, subject to case-by-case application.

unless you're indigenous, you're too are a migrant - your family just came a little before. canada needs migrant workers otherwise it would fall apart, there are not enough people for the amount of jobs. immigration should be easier and not harder.

Canada has got plenty of people who are willing to work these farm jobs.. like me for example. Problem is jobs like these never get promoted to young people to adults, citizens of canada. I applied to Agriculture and Agri-food government program so hopefully i can work in agriculture this spring and summer

purelystellar0824 Go to the job bank, that is all you see.. The problem is the companies doing the hiring. They work you to the bone to the point of paid slavery. Long hours, 7 days a week, and low wages... and an overall disrespect for employees. With all the workers here there must be some way to schedule them every other day and still yield all their millions. Greed is the story of Leamington.

yes- I am from here- things have so changed in 40 years.... yet 40 years ago, again even 10 when I went back to visit- the incredible racism...we see the same here on west coast, too- and 'white' canadians sadly do neither recognize their own white privilege, nor their own racism....nor realize that truly we are one humanity....

Sure deport them all and watch famers struggle to harvest crops. All the food going to go to waste and then you’ll complain about the grocery stores being empty. There’s not enough willing Canadians to do the hard manual work they do.

Tania Jocelyn ,I’m a carpenter and work outside all year too. The difference is I make a living wage and work 40 to 50 hours a week. These farmers pay minimum wage to the workers and make them put in 70 hours a week. I have a good education and trade school. I pay my taxes, pay my bills and in general contribute to the economy of the town.I also volunteer in the community an do my part so my children will have a better place to live. These workers are here for the farmers and that’s all. I’m not knocking their work ethic but the community is not a better place because of them.
