    I did 3 years seasons farm labor , all over okanogan and washington...apples, pears berries, bulb farms, etc...after leaving high school. We had fun, learned how the world works (we were city kids) and made good enough wages.
    I was called a peon by my parents who then shopped at the grocery store for the very apples I just picked for them to buy. The irony!
    Youth and even inmates can do the labor but of course, whose going to promote that but individuals, as us kids did in the 70s

    I'm in the lower 48 so I don't know how things work in Canada,but wouldn't it make more sense to just hire Canadians,instead of spending all that money for cheap labor,use it to pay Canadians hire wages..🤔 Or why not vaccinate them..? The vaccine is free, here and there are plenty who are not going to get it,so we got plenty to spare and send to y'all..I don't quite understand why these farms are crying about measurements to prevent the spread,have they not seen what's happening in India..?
    Again, since I'm not from there I don't know if I'm off base or not, someone please help me understand,if I am..

      We hire migrant workers because as Canadian citizens, farm work is beneath us. It has nothing to do with how much the job pays.

    • @misswilson7520
      @misswilson7520 3 года назад

      Also these farm owners and workers have every right to complain about restrictions being put in place in Haldiman. They are harsher than what the government has put in place for Canadian citizens who have to quarantine. These men aren't even allowed outside once a day for fresh air. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Yes the Canadians were smoking pot but the migrant workers were using everything from cocaine to meth and they were more of a headache to manage than the 3-4 locals that worked on the vineyard. The thing about farms that hire migrant workers is they don't pay anywhere close to minimum wage they actually pay per unit and the Canadians can't keep up with the migrants that are on cocaine or meth because that's what those drugs do

    Well, well, well. It seems like the costs of importing and quarantining migrant workers outweighs the cost of paying unemployed Ontarians to work at $15/hour. Here's an idea. Employ locally!!!
    Teens have always had paper routes and babysitting gigs. So why not offer the our nation's future a chance to connect with their food and land? As someone who has experienced apple picking on a medium-sized farm on several occasions, I know that the average farm pays $20/crate (measuring around 64 cubic feet, or 4ftX4ftX4ft). Of course, that makes migrant workers essential for a good return on investment. However, with added costs of travel, quarantining, feeding, testing etc., this is no time to complain, it's a time to turn to your own community rather than importing workers at cost.
