Man, as an American born Taiwanese who grew up with Taiwanese as my mother tongue, your appreciation for our language truly warms my heart. Thank you, and I wish you the best in your journey and I hope that this wonderful language will thrive beyond my generation.
Same here brother. Came to America 32 years ago when I was 8. Originally from Kaohsiung in a family of 100% Taiwanese speakers. Sadly by my generation some do not understand Taiwanese at all. To me, Taiwanese is the sound of my grandma, my parents and family. It saddens me that I have never met a child under age 12 who can speak a complete sentences of taiwanese. In order to do my part to keep Taiwanese alive my kids are only allowed to speak taiwanese at home. When they speak English I respond with 阿爸聽謀. Lol My dream is that some day my kids can meet someone their age and converse in Taiwanese.
respect,I’m from Tainan and live in Australia. I will require my kids to converse in Taiwanese at home too. When I go to big cities with my family in Taiwan, some older people are amazed how fluently I can speak in Taiwanese , especially in Taipei. Seems like we are from a different world…
@@norwayg2130 @Jackson Kuo that's great to hear, i have a similar experience. My family is from Chiayi. My dad raised us to be proud of our heritage and we only spoke Taiwanese at home. I used to be resentful of this, as I found it inconvenient to have to learn Mandarin separately, but now that I'm older, I'm grateful I was raised this way. It would have been nearly impossible for me to acquire Taiwanese at my level of fluency outside of the home. When I speak Taiwanese with strangers, there's often an instant sense of "自己人" familiarity and comfort.
Waaaaa I am beyond impressed, you are sooo amazing!! Your dedication to our language is incredible, and your tones and pronounciations are super duper. This language is really difficult already but it must be even harder for someone who's native language is English. Your level of fluency is incredibleeee. You've really got to the local level as well and hearing you say things like sianmihoanko at 5:20 is so funny and heartwarming xD, you nailed it. Keep up the amazing work, you are an inspiration! :D
