    i understand the reasons for getting rid of mont albert and surrey hill stations, as well as the union road level crossing, but i do have some nostalgia for the old surrey hills station. During my school days, sometimes after school my dad and i would go down to watch the trains go by at the old union rd level crossing, and we even made up our own game of betting what type of train would come, where it would be going to and what type of service it would be.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  Месяц назад +1

      Quite a few of these places with level crossings somehow just blended in with the local community. A great trench or massively over engineered rail bridge in my opinion totally destroyed atmosphere of the suburb.

    I do worry about the elderly and those who can't drive to the other stations

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 Месяц назад +4

      Not patronage driven, but a cheaper design of grade separation of two three track level crossings with long periods of express running. A recent double fatality on one of the level crossings added to the urgency.
      The Two previous stations being well under a kilometre apart, even closer when measured platform end to platform end , further added to the case of replacing the two stations with one approximately in the middle without too much extra walking distance involved.
      Having one less stop on the line means some time saving for trains and by far the bulk of passengers on the trains. Effectively many previous non express trains run express for one extra station.
      That is a summary of the positives.
      The older stations were nicer looking and more traditional than the new concrete dominated one in a trench below the surrounding ground level.
      The previous stations were a bit below and a bit above average station patronage from memory. Dozens of station with less patronage.

    In my mind Chatham Station should have been done way with as well, it has no access to Canterbury Rd except for a small alley way, the other side is part of an Army Reserve unit, that part of Canterbury Rd is semi industrial and its usage is smaller than either Surrey Hills or Mont Albert.

    • @tressteleg1

    • @smitajky
      @smitajky Месяц назад

      I used all the stations regularly. There is a lane way that connects from the Balwyn area directly to Chatham. It was the only station suitable for walking to. But the "services" were not good in my time. Often trains failed to stop and I was taken all the way to Camberwell then had to catch a different train back again. If I had to use Surrey hills it was another km each way added to the walk. If it is too hard to USE public transport then it can't be used. Unless you also make the alternative impossible too.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  Месяц назад

      @@smitajky I’m not familiar enough with the area to comment in detail, but there certainly are laneways in the vicinity. After the video taking last year, I walked a little east of Mont Albert and found the series of laneways and roads which got me to the Box Hill tram, not far away.

  • @smitajky
    @smitajky Месяц назад

    Putting things below ground is a big cost but it doesn't address the actual problems. The narrow road (Union road) hamstrung by a shopping centre and parking still is a bottleneck. And the stupid arrangement of Warragul road and Cantebury road causes major traffic problems. They cannot fix congestion by tackling the LEAST significant contributor to it. Get a way for Union road to connect with Warragul road going over or under Cantebury road to avoid the bottleneck. Ban all parking in strip shopping centres in congested areas. That would fix the problem for at least 50 years. Possibly more.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  Месяц назад

      Not living in Melbourne I’m barely qualified to comment, but unfortunately every improvement to traffic flow only encourages more people to drive and before you know what next, the delays are just as bad as ever but with more cars, and if those new car drivers were public transport users, it’s a lose lose situation.

      money. the public loves these crossings disappearing. the train drivers too. victoria has cranked up an enormous public debt. tressteleg will know the numbers better than me but sydney has less than 30 level crossings, melbourne has more than 200. something needed to be done.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  Месяц назад +1

      As far as I have heard, two factors make trenches difficult. Particularly Bayside, digging down can reach the water table which makes things difficult, but from what I have heard a wider rail corridor is needed to construct a trench. Personally I see the elevated bridges has been quite I an eyesore.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  Месяц назад +2

      90% of the benefit of crossing removals is for motorists. They don’t particularly speed up the trains. As for Sydney, the suburban area has never had more than about half a dozen crossings in my lifetime. The Richmond line after electrification added a few more, but crossings which disappeared included The Royal National Park where the tram Museum crosses now, and of course where the Carlingford line crossed I think Parramatta Road is another. There had been one at Oatley but that went a long time ago. Maybe one or two others have also disappeared for one reason or another.

      @@tressteleg1 , judging by what has been stated in youtube comments, some train drivers never have an incident in a long career. my dad, however, had a lot, including multiple deaths, at rail crossings in melbourne. crossing removals wont minimise suicides. he had a lot of them too especially around fairfield. he was even forced to pick up body parts by smart arsed coppers who accused him of not driving the train in a safe matter. he walked home directly from the site after he recognised who he was picking up the pieces of. it was one of our neighbours. i remember this incident well. i could hear the yelling from our house. too much information? these are reasons why crossing removals are a great idea. shame about the massive state debt, though. only 30 years since the last massive state debt. they will have to raise state fuel taxes. or casino taxes. yeah, tax the casino out of profitability. i have reason to believe that a strong excuse for removing the port and st kilda lines was because the vampires planning the casino requested first the liberals then the labor party to do it to make the chosen site more suitable.

      @tressteleg1  Месяц назад +1

      @vsvnrg3263 So true. And I feel sorry for what your father went through. If you saw the video on Harris Trains with Lindsay Adams driving, he never hit anybody whereas his brother had something like 7 fatalities although I think some of them may have been on journeys beyond the suburban area. Fortunately I never killed anybody with a tram although a passenger after getting off and probably skylarking one night had a serious leg gash as I moved off. Some of my workmates did have fatalities, and one I remember never drove again, opting to be a conductor instead.
