Thought you might like to try : Take a piece of watercolour paper and put it in a tub water. Leave 2-3 hours. Put on a board and take out your neocolour 2s, maybe your unison soft pastels. It is a experiment of the moment, to see the bloom of the watercolour paint or any material (water soluable graphite too). Keep up the wonderful artwork !
I have discovered you in summer and every time you come to say hi here and share your work I save it for the day when I have time to sit down and relax with cup of coffee and enjoy it in full. You inspired me on many occasions and made me laugh too, thank you for all your wonderful art and please don’t let the fears stop you. Art is beautiful and it’s for you first, and you doing amazing
Congrats on 12 months Helen! I so love your videos, I feel you are so much more confident than I am with your work. I really look forward to seeing if you have uploaded a new video. You were my main influence in really committing to watercolour, I was a dry medium kind of person, but now I have WC and gouache too! Fear holds me back a lot, perspective is often my failing, especially with architecture and urban sketching type things. I am just retired, and I now have time to do art, and I'm looking forward to seeing your 2024 journey! I had a nearly 30 year hiatus from art, now it is time again. Thank you for sharing your videos and life with us - you are nearly at 10k subscribers now! 🥰
Hopefully we can keep moving forwards, and not let fear restrict us too much - I hope you are loving the thought of watercolours and gouache at least! Landscapes are probably more forgiving than buildings for perspective! Thank you so much for your kind comments and support!
Enjoy all your videos and your art. Last year I decided to draw/paint everyday and on Dec 31 I finished all of them. I sketch nature, do watercolor, gouache, colored pencil and graphite in all kinds and sizes of sketch books. Some are good ,most Ok all are fun and help me be calm and focused. I like variety and I'm loving just using all the media all the time. I use your videos and many others to learn or get inspired. So I now plan to draw/paint every day of 2024 too. I t really helps build a habit and I don't worry about or fear any thing about doing art' usually cause there's always the next day to try again! Looking forwad to your work.
That's incredible!! Well done! I love that you're into very mixed media too! I'm hoping that by trying to do a daily practice, the fear factor will wear off too - I love that sentiment - that there's always the next day to try again!
Gorgeous painting!! I really like the effect when you added water to the soft pastels. I didn’t realize you could do that, that actually makes soft pastels more appealing to me (except it is Jan 2 and I’m not succumbing to buying art supplies this early into the year 😂). Enjoyed the little snippets from your travels as well, I love seeing scenery 😊. Now, I’m not happy you were sick a year ago, but I am happy that I found your channel soon after you started and have been following along! I’m really looking forward to seeing you revisit previous hauls to see how you’ve gotten along with the products. That will be very interesting!! (I know I made a few purchases in 2023 and haven’t even used the items yet, hence, nothing new for me until I’ve made a dent in some supplies!!)
Happy Utube Anniversary day! Hi,hi. I‘ve recently done a drawing course & realised I really enjoy it, now I‘m re-discovering my watercolour pencils & although my results aren’t bad I‘m not very happy with the colours, or I expect too much from my Derwent pencils. ( They’re the 30 year old ones but are my trusted brand ). Always enjoy your videos please continue, I‘m sure I‘m not alone there, and happy painting. Look forward to seeing 2024 video / art examples. Thanks for 2023.
Haha, thank you very much!! I have appreciated and enjoyed all your comments along the way! So glad you're continuing with your own art exploration! I have the Derwent Watercolour pencils, but I don't find them as pigmented as some others, such as the Albrecht Dürers, I'm afraid.
@@helencryer Thanks. In a video, I think? Someone mentioned CaranD’Ache had higher pigments than Derwent. Can’t afford to buy various pencils! So will potter on with my Derwents, I have 2 pastel pencils from CaranD’Ache but that’s not watercolour!! Are Albrecht Dürer Faber Castells‘ pencils?
Loved the scenery from your trip! I had Yorkshire relatives hundreds and hundreds of years ago on the genealogical line so I am always a bit curious of that area along with Cornwall and Wales. But back to the subject at hand, I love the idea of the haul follow-ups! I have plenty of items that haven't lived up to my personal expectations and it would be nice to compare notes. As for tutorial, I am a mixed media artist wholeheartedly, but if I were to go purist watercolor, I love Peter Woolley's method. Everything he does ends up looking so magical! He does an allotment shed in 2 different methods that is just brilliant. Thanks again, Helen, and Happy New Year! 🎉
I think if I had to move from Cornwall it would be to Yorkshire, and currently my brother and three of my kids live there! I'm glad you like the haul review idea, as I'm quite excited to do them! Thank you for the Peter Woolley recommendation. I've not heard of him before, so will go and look!
Beautiful scenes. It fascinating to me that even though the scenes of farmland look similar to New Zealand, the colours and atmosphere are totally different, requiring a different palette. I feel like I can never get enough greens , but use much less blue except for the sea (and that is mostly green too). I’m self-taught too. Been painting since childhood. I used to sell work but I don’t anymore because I hate trying to conform to other people’s taste.
I'm hoping to spend some time in New Zealand in about a year, with my sister who's living there - I'll be sure to take lots of green paint! One thing with my RUclips, and my craft market stall that I promised myself, is that I'll only ever do what I truly want to do myself.
I love this comment! I could collect every blue and green in the world and still never feel I had enough. And, yes, never settle for the tastes of others. If you resist the temptation to ride trends and to do commissions, your collectors will find you and love your voice.
Love this one Helen - really like the way you developed it from a few swipes of paint to a fairly detailed rural scene. Hoping for you that 2024 will be the best ever! 🐨👍
I’ve been watching you all year and I can see and hear how your confidence has developed. You make some really good and helpful videos, it’s really been a pleasure to watch you. I’m a self taught Lino printer but I turned to watercolour, gouache and now the water movable oils you demonstrated as Lino is too physical for me now with my health. You’ve inspired me to try new mediums and push my skills. And even try and make my first you tube video 😂. Keep doing what you’re doing as it’s working in my view! I’m looking forward to you revisiting your old art hauls ❤
Sorry that your health has been challenging, and glad you have been able to explore other avenues! Congratulations on your RUclips channel!!! I hope you enjoy it! Thanks ever so much!
Congratulations 🎉, Helen, on your one year anniversary of your RUclips channel! I love and truly appreciate all the content you have shared in the past year. I loved seeing your travel and Plein Air painting videos and hope you will continue to do them along with your studio and art making videos. But I will love just seeing anything you share in your art journey. I also have decided to attempt to make an art piece everyday this year. I struggle with chronic pain in my neck and this resolution might not be possible for me to achieve since I can’t sit up some days. But even if my art is just a squiggle in Procreate on my iPad, I want to make that effort. Many times this year, you have inspired me to make some art after watching one of your videos when I was having one of my more painful days. And I thank you for the inspiration and creativity you share which ignites my own. I appreciate all the things you share and the discoveries you make. For instance, I didn’t know that soft pastels were water soluble. Now I want to try that too. As I write this, I’m not able to sit up today but I have that hope and feeling of joyful anticipation for when I can try out this technique myself as soon as possible 😊. Thank you again for all your videos. I really appreciate them and the joy and inspiration they bring me.
I'm so sorry you struggle with pain! I think that just trying to do something each day, no matter how small or quickly done, will gradually change our relationship with art, and give more confidence and freedom (I'm hoping!) Thank you ever so much for your kind words, and I'm happy if in any way I encourage others' art!
This is another beautiful scene. I'm always fascinated by the way your beautiful skies emerge from (please forgive me, but I think you'll understand what I mean) a bit of a mess. It's like watching a crime film unravel till the big ahaa! finale when everything fits into place. You can almost feel the wind blowing the clouds across the countryside. Thank you for entertaining me when I was cooped up in bed at the beginning of the year and for showing your lovely art supplies. I very much enjoy your videos. Best wishes for 2024.
Congrats on your first anniversary! I am still working my way through your year of videos, but I have been inspired by the way you mix media (which I don't do much of) and, of course, all your fabulous art materials! Best wishes in 2024!
Congratulations on your one year anniversary. Your videos have been such an encouragement to me. I live in southwest Oklahoma, but feel a kinship because of your love of the landscape. You have given me many ideas of new materials to explore. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the videos you’ve made the last year. I am always excited when the new one popes up. Keep on enjoying what you do a congrats on your anniversary! I am looking forward to the new content you will create this year.
I really like your authenticity and your 'go, do it' - attitude. Yes, and your art! Re the Art supplies.... Yes, yes, yes, I am familiar with the happy shopping sprees.... I am in my third or fourth year of watercolor painting and possess more watercolor tubes from different manufacturers than I can use up in any reasonable amount of time. I stayed with watercolor though and did not venture out to other mediums much - but it still is a challenge because of the limited real estate on my shelves... And don't get me started on palettes... There are such pretty ones :-) I have quite a steady and nice 'output' of paintings and sketches, but most of my relax time is taken up by toying with my art supplies. It soothes my little OCD, and it sure beats watching the news... Thank you for letting us in on your process. Blessings from Switzerland
Thank you for sharing your journey! The fear is real for me too. I'm afraid of wasting supplies, esp paper, so I just keep collecting!! I like your goal of painting something everyday. I'm going to cut up a pile of watercolor bookmarks. If nothing else gets done, I hope to at least do one of those. Again, thanks for the encouragement!
I’ve throughly enjoyed bouncing right along with you this past year. I know what you mean about the perfectionist thing it’s hard sometimes just to jump in and try after all it just paper I keep telling myself. I’ve enjoyed watching you grow as an artist this past year (your much braver than I am but I’m getting better) I look forward to your videos in the new year and seeing what your loving to play with in your new supply’s. I bought myself pan pastels on my birthday last week a totally new supply for me, can’t wait for them to arrive. Happy anniversary and stay brave!
Congratulations on a whole year of YouTubing! I’m so glad I found your channel - it’s been really helpful in showing me what appeals to me & what doesn’t as well as helping me choose materials better. Of course, I now have a fully developed case of what my husband calls ASAS (art supplies acquisition syndrome) but then it means he’s never stuck for what to buy me at Christmas 😉. I was given a beautiful book, Color in and out of the Garden for Christmas and it makes me want to do something every day too & though I don’t think that will be possible at the moment, I will try for every weekend! Good luck in your next year of art and YouTubing - I really loved this one - I’d never have thought of using shadow violet for a sky but it was beautiful! 😊
ASAS!! Hahaha! I don't think it will last forever - this is the year we really start using it! 🤞Thank you so much for all your lovely support this past year!
I love your soothing voice Helen. I'm up at the crack of dawn and watch you while having my coffee everyday. I use to be a carefree artist but set it aside to raise my children. Now I want to paint in watercolor but I'm frozen. You inspire me Helen. I hope to get started very soon. Thank you
Helen, I am so glad you decided to continue creating videos after your 6-mo. mark and here we are on your first-year anniversary! I have enjoyed your content over this year and enjoy watching you create. Thank you for sharing your art, adventures and exploration along the way!
Happy New Year and congratulations on your one year RUclips anniversary Helen🥳 I totally relate to the 'perfectionist' streak and fear of failure/making bad art. These things have prevented me from letting go and just having fun in the past. My resolution to myself is that I'm going to take your inspiration to make more art and to stop worrying and start playing with all the lovely art materials I have been so scared of wasting. Looking forward to you revisiting your previous art hauls and who knew soft pastels were water soluble🤯 Your channel quickly became one of my favourites this past year and I always look forward to your video uploads. I can't wait to see what inspiring adventures you take us on this coming year❤️ xx
Thank you so much! Happy New Year! I've really appreciated all your lovely comments through the year - hopefully we have a good enjoyable art year ahead!
Helen, congratulations on your YT anniversary! I stumbled upon you soon after your debut and I have really enjoyed your posts over the past year, mainly because you are so unpretentious (and have such a great dog, Freddy). I'm as addicted to art supplies as anyone, but I'm growing a bit tired of all of the "haul" videos that people post on YT, so I've also decided to focus more on using mine instead of chasing the thrill of new supplies every month. I hope you have a wonderful 2024 and look forward to your future posts!
Thank you - I so appreciate you joining me! Yes, I know what you mean about the hauls - you can only do that so long before it becomes a distraction from art itself - and that's what I'm feeling more keen to explore. Happy New Year!
You were just up the road from me, wonderful part of Yorkshire. Congrats on the anniversary, I enjoy your channel's mix of content, the hauls and how you then use the materials are great subjects.
Congratulations on your one year anniversary. Your channel is one of my favorites and I never miss it. I’m looking forward to where you take it in 2024!
I spent tons of money on art supplies in 2023, especially at the end when I noticed that inflation was driving up the price on some favorites. So I decided to indulge telling myself that with the economy the way it is I’m stocking up on supplies that may become unaffordable in the future. So now that I’m well stocked I need to dive in fearlessly and use them and experiment with them and push away from treating everything as too precious to use. It’s amazing all the complicated thoughts and emotions we can have about art!
It's so true! I never realised till last year all the complex thoughts surrounding art! I've been reading more on the subject lately, and it's fascinating! Hopefully we'll make good progress this year!
I've been here since you started Helen, and I absolutely love the videos you make. A nice mix of haul and enjoying the creation process, makes it easy to pop on and just chill and enjoy. :)
So very glad you are going to carry on with the art & videos. I too am buckling down this year, finishing up some old courses and curating my supplies. You captured the experience well about coming back to a childhood love of art & coming back to it. Great to see how you push through. It really is an inspiration. Thank you. 💗
Congratulations on your first year 🎉I discovered your channel a few months ago and love the content you share. Your style is very natural and authentic which makes for an engaging and relaxing watch! Like you, I’m a self-teaching (always an evolving journey!) and I want to create a piece of art on a daily basis this year, even if it’s a quick 5 minute doodle so it’ll be interesting to see what evolves this year! Happy New Year to you 🤩
Thanks ever so much, that's really kind of you! Good luck with your daily challenge too - that's exactly what I had in mind - a quick doodle will be plenty for some days.
Congratulations 🎊 Helen on your first year of RUclips creating! I have really enjoyed watching your channel, seeing your art hauls & fun times of just enjoying creating your artwork. Thanks for sharing this wonderful journey with us!
I like your videos for being pleasant, relaxing and unpretentious. I watch them to destress and sometimes I even get inspired to pick up my own neglected sketchbook and brushes. So thanks for making them!
I discovered you a few months ago. I came across you whilst researching art materials, but my favourite videos are watching you create art. I love seeing the process of how you develop a scene
Congrats Helen! You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs and my go to when I need creative inspiration. Your videos are always so relaxing and peaceful. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations on your 1 year RUclips! I really enjoy all of your videos. I'm starting 2024 with another watercolor pencil class. I really enjoyed the class last year and have all the supplies, so I thought, why not! I loved the instructor. He has a great sense of humor and is a fabulous colored pencil artist. Happy New Year🎉 P.S. My mom's name was Helen. Helen Rose. I sure miss her.
That sounds perfect then! Hope you have fun! Thank you ever so much! I am Helen Caton. (Pronounced Kay-tun) My mum is a genealogist, and that's an old family name.
I love watching how you layer up your paintings,it’s great to see where you begin and how you develop them along the way,I’m sometimes not sure where to begin! This year I want to become more creative and confident doing landscapes, especially now I have more kit ( thanks Father Christmas!). So pleased I found your channel you inspire me no end. Congratulations on your first anniversary, here’s to many more.😊
I'm so glad if I can encourage people a bit! I think landscapes are wonderful because I think they're more forgiving than other things! Thank you so much!
Lovely video Helen! I really enjoyed seeing you work :) I love the idea of putting the materials to test as well, you get to see what has work and what hasn’t. If you need ideas for videos I’d love to know more about your art practice, like how do you find time and what drives you to paint/draw.
Keep on doing what you are doing - I really enjoy your art sessions on u tube. You resonate with so many of us who love making art but know we are not always going to produce something wonderful every time! I shall look forward to seeing what you do in the coming year.
I would hear in your review of art supplies why you like them eg they are very useful for shadows. And I love to see how people get ideas from their art books.
Hi Helen, congratulations on your 1yr YT well done 👏🏼 you are one of my favourites. I was surprised to hear that you've only been making videos for a year! Love your style, look forward to seeing more of you this coming year 🙏
Congratulations on your wonderful 12 months of Art here on RUclips, I’ve been one of your first subscribers and have been here every step of your art journey so far , you’ve helped me so much and I would never had known about schmincke or Roman szmal paints or a few brands of watercolour paint brushes and plein air painting which I’m yet to try and I really hopes one day to be brave enough and venture out . Hope your channel keeps on growing and I’m ready for your next art adventure and will be with you on your art journey, Happy 1 year Anniversary Helen xx
Thank you so so much - I really appreciate you! I'm hoping to do more plein air painting this year (if it ever stops raining!), so hopefully you'll get out there and do it too!
I love your channel because you feel so real to me. And you live and work in such a beautiful environment. My dream is to visit the UK some day. Please keep going and don’t lose your realistic and peaceful style. Teresa from California ❤
I really enjoy watching you paint. It is so pretty what you make. Well, you might laugh though I would not mind seeing something that is not that perfect 😁. When sitting fighting with the colors and stuff it is nice knowing that other artists are only human beeings that sometimes have the same "problems" as I am when painting 😊.
Congratulations on a year and taking your art practice to a new level. I am a big fan of your videos, they are so relaxing and informative. Thank you so much for making this channel- keep the videos coming!
Thanks to your videos on here I’ve had the confidence to build my daily art practice this year. I also bought The Artists Way and am starting daily pages too. My perfectionism has always stopped me, that and the fact that in school my art got a C for the fact I put effort in 😅 so I never thought I’d be any good. The thing is, I’ve learned that actually I’m not too bad! Thanks for giving your time this past year. It’s helped you, but also the rest of us here.
Congratulations on completing your first year on RUclips! Hope you had a wonderful holiday. Ambitious start for the new year, art every day! Just don't get burnt out, it's okay to take breaks. Even though you don't have formal art training, you do have an intuitive sense of how to make a video interesting. I enjoy the commentary and comparison between different brands and media. You really go in depth, getting into intricate details and I find this to be very pratical information for new artists. I love hearing you speak about fear of failure and fear of making mistakes. I think it's not just art that people (including myself) have this issue, but it's in all aspects of our lives. That self-doubt really can turn us against ourselves and it is destructive; which is why I prefer to spread optimism and positivity. I may not be able to do something, but if I can encourage and support someone else's efforts, I still see that as a win.
Thank you so much for all of this! I have appreciated your comments a lot this past year - you have definitely encouraged me! With doing something every day - it may only be a few squiggles. I'm finding my 'bad art ketchbook' is a very inviting place, so it may just work to get me over the reticence I feel EVERY time I want to do art.
Congratulations Helen on your first year. I love your videos and your art, especially the splodge and scribbles which have been a real source of inspiration to me. Please keep then coming and I’m looking forward to your next year of videos. X
Well done and congratulations on your you tube anniversary. I've really enjoyed your channel and your relaxed and relatable presentation. I'm happy you've found it to be a positive and rewarding experience. It's something I'd like to do myself so it's great to hear that you've enjoyed it. I also really appreciate your impressions of various products... it helps a great deal to see these items being used. Thanks again for the time and effort you put in in making your videos.
Thank you ever so much! It takes a bit of time, but I think keeping it fairly simple makes it doable. I promised myself at the beginning that I'd only ever do exactly what I wanted to, and not be influenced by what I thought might get more views or whatever. I'm glad I've stuck to that, or it might make someone not enjoy art as much. Good luck!
Wow I can't believe its been a year already. I love your videos. My go to for relaxing and inspo. Thanks for making them and sharing your experiences. Your work is lovely. And this piece is equally beautiful. ❤
I am five months late for the party 😄Congratulations for one year anniversary on RUclips ! I am a beginner. Your thoughts on new products are really helpful and inspiring. Your videos are agreeable and soothing with your voice and music. I am planning to watch all the videos in the past and future Thank you😊
Hi Helen, thank you for all your sharing about your process with art making. I do recognize this fear that holds you back. Can really recommend Ohn Mar Win’s RUclips channel. She prepares pages in advance with watercolour or woodies to have a start on the everyday sketching. I tried it and it makes it so much easier to follow up on your decision to make art every day. Your videos are so nice and so is your voice, please keep going. 😍🇩🇰
Happy Anniversary & New Year! I still can’t believe you’ve only been at this a year! And also that you edit on your phone 😅 I can’t wait to watch your journey progress and unfold as you keep doing your thing 🤗💖✨
Hi Helen! Happy Anniversary! I love watching your videos, bought a lot of stuff after watching you try it. :) I would love a video on how you store your supplies as I have really trouble doing that in my tiny art room. - If this isn't to personal! Best wishes, Julia
Hi Helen , Where were you during lock-down , your channel would have been wonderful for us all , so when the next one comes along I will be hear waiting . Mike in Exeter xx
Thankyou Helen! - I’ve really appreciated your supply swatching and sharing of your process over the last year and think that it would be lovely to join you as you explore your art books and new techniques! 😊 It’s been invaluable to watch you as you work through a painting and even when you think it is starting to go ‘awry’, to accept it as part of the process and continue to work with it until it is something more pleasing to you. Perfectionism is a double edged sword 🙄 Love the richness of the unison pastels - what do you use to fix them, so that they don’t get really messy in your sketchbook?
Thank you ever so much! I'm really glad you find some things useful! I fixed the pastels with a spray of Talens Pastel Fixative - rubbed my hand over after, and it seems to have worked well.
Hi Helen, It is a good practice to do art daily. I started this way and now I do it around 5 days a week sometimes 3. Congratulations on one year anniversary ❤. Maria
Lovely video Helen, very honest. I really enjoy your videos too and totally empathise with the perfectionist streak. Sometimes I sit and think that I'd really like to do this or tat with my art but jsut get held back that fear....its ridiculous but very powerful. I don't think I could do some art every day as it would mentally tire me out with all the other commitments I have in my life but perhaps trying to be kinder to myself would be good place to start. Happy 2024!
Thanks so much! It does seem so silly, and yet it's very real! By art every day, I do mean things including little sketches or scribbles, maybe even just scribbles of colour schemes. Also, having my 'bad art sketch book' seems to be working a bit! Maybe you need to dedicate a 'being kind to myself' sketchbook, where there's zero judgement!
Congratulations Helen on your one year RUclips anniversary 💗🎊💗. Thank you for all the wonderful art hauls, the amazing organised swatching, your creative experiments and of course the beautiful art you create. Love watching your videos that continue to inspire, seeing your art journey unfold in a beautiful humble and natural way. Being brave and letting go, while bringing in an art discipline is something I can most definitely aspire to in all aspects of life. Do you still create in your dinning room or have you considered, if possible to create a studio/art room where all your supplies are to hand? I have recently set up a space and find it helps if I’m planning on creating on a regular basis rather than having to get supplies in and out in a shared space. If your swatches are anything to go by would love to see a studio video in the future. Just a thought but do appreciate it may not be practical or necessary. Happy new year to you and thank you for all that you share here 🙏🏻 😊 🙏🏻 xx
Thank you so much for your kind comment!! I still just do art in my dining room. I have a separate desk, but at the moment that is given over to a sewing project! We have a small house with no spare rooms, so I don't have hopes of a room of my own for another couple of years! I will do a video about my art space and storage at some point soon though.
Happy youtube birthday! Love the pic. I've only used watercolor paints but I'm thinking of getting some neocolour 2 pastels. What I don't get is when to use them in combination with the paints, what the advantage is. Perhaps you could talk about this in a future video. Thanks.
Thank you! I think it's about the textures you can get left behind from the Neocolor II's. If you were going to use them super smoothly, with all the marks dissolved away, I don't see that there's much difference to just using paint, but they're great for adding more intense areas, or areas of texture.
Could you list the colours and brands that you used in the second painting that you did in your yellow royal talons sketchbook? You said the picture you did was from a reference of something from Pinterest I’m interested in the watercolours you used I can’t quite read them, even when I enlarge it
Sorry about that! The original artist is David Parfitt, and the colours I used are: Holbein's Verditer, Maimeri Blu's Payne's Grey, Isaro's Nordmann Green, Daniel Smith's Undersea Green and Isaro's Mindy Green (which sparkles a tiny bit!)
I honestly felt like I was in Lord of the Rings. At one point while I was at the back of a column of my kids and nieces and nephews, I actually said I felt like I was out with a bunch of hobbits!
That sounds a lot of fun, thanks so much!
Oh I'd love to see that! Lovely idea!
Helen, yours has definitely become one of my favourite YT channels. Thank you for all your inspiring and entertaining videos.
That's really sweet - thank you!!
What a delightful comment - thank you so so much!!
Congrats Helen on your 12 months RUclips, look forward to following you in 2024 x
Thanks ever so much!!
It's the 3rd now - you're fine! 😂
Thanks a million for always being a friendly face on here!!!
1:12 I love that!!
Love this one Helen - really like the way you developed it from a few swipes of paint to a fairly detailed rural scene. Hoping for you that 2024 will be the best ever! 🐨👍
Knowing I don't have to do much to start with really helps me get going! Thank you so much!!
I totally agree.
😂 I love your description!! That's one thing I've learnt this year - not to worry so much about a mess! Thank you so much!
Congrats on your first anniversary! I am still working my way through your year of videos, but I have been inspired by the way you mix media (which I don't do much of) and, of course, all your fabulous art materials! Best wishes in 2024!
Thanks ever so much for watching! Happy New Year!
Congratulations on your one year anniversary. Your videos have been such an encouragement to me. I live in southwest Oklahoma, but feel a kinship because of your love of the landscape. You have given me many ideas of new materials to explore. Thank you!
I'm so happy to hear it - that's lovely! Thank you!!
I look forward to hearing your haul updates. I’ve got some nice supplies to work through too. Keep splodging!
Haha, thanks!! I'm actually really looking forwards to doing the haul updates!
Thank you so much for the videos you’ve made the last year. I am always excited when the new one popes up. Keep on enjoying what you do a congrats on your anniversary! I am looking forward to the new content you will create this year.
That is really lovely of you - thank you!
Thank you ever so much for your lovely comments this year! I love hearing about people similar to me in these ways!
🎉1 Year. Yay 🎉 Keep going!
Thanks for the encouragement!
I like that idea! Something small and manageable. I'm getting slightly better at using my nice paper, but totally understand this!
Congrats on your year anniversary. I look forward to the videos on the art supplies you purchased last year as I bought many of those same supplies.
Thank you! That's good to hear!
Thanks so much!! Ooo - pan pastels! Hope you love them! We just need to keep pushing forwards!
Happy RUclips anniversary. Only one year! Fantastic.
Thank you!!
I love your soothing voice Helen. I'm up at the crack of dawn and watch you while having my coffee everyday. I use to be a carefree artist but set it aside to raise my children. Now I want to paint in watercolor but I'm frozen. You inspire me Helen. I hope to get started very soon. Thank you
That's so kind - thank you! Set aside for a time, soon to be enjoyed fully again I hope!!
Helen, I am so glad you decided to continue creating videos after your 6-mo. mark and here we are on your first-year anniversary! I have enjoyed your content over this year and enjoy watching you create. Thank you for sharing your art, adventures and exploration along the way!
Thanks so very much!
Happy New Year and congratulations on your one year RUclips anniversary Helen🥳
I totally relate to the 'perfectionist' streak and fear of failure/making bad art. These things have prevented me from letting go and just having fun in the past. My resolution to myself is that I'm going to take your inspiration to make more art and to stop worrying and start playing with all the lovely art materials I have been so scared of wasting. Looking forward to you revisiting your previous art hauls and who knew soft pastels were water soluble🤯
Your channel quickly became one of my favourites this past year and I always look forward to your video uploads. I can't wait to see what inspiring adventures you take us on this coming year❤️ xx
Thank you so much! Happy New Year! I've really appreciated all your lovely comments through the year - hopefully we have a good enjoyable art year ahead!
I love watching your channel! Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Thanks ever so much!!
It's absolutely beautiful!! Thanks so much!
Congratulations on your one year anniversary. Your channel is one of my favorites and I never miss it. I’m looking forward to where you take it in 2024!
That's so kind of you - thank you!
Thanks so much for all your lovely comments and support through the year!
So very glad you are going to carry on with the art & videos. I too am buckling down this year, finishing up some old courses and curating my supplies. You captured the experience well about coming back to a childhood love of art & coming back to it. Great to see how you push through. It really is an inspiration. Thank you. 💗
Sounds good - I think quite a few people are feeling that way - we can't keep accumulating forever! Thanks so much!!
I enjoyed your video, it reflects the art journey of so many of us including myself. Really looking forward to seeing what you do this year.
Thank you for all your kind comments and support!!
Thanks ever so much!!
I like your videos for being pleasant, relaxing and unpretentious. I watch them to destress and sometimes I even get inspired to pick up my own neglected sketchbook and brushes. So thanks for making them!
That is very sweet - thanks ever so much! Delighted to know the videos sometimes inspire others!
I discovered you a few months ago. I came across you whilst researching art materials, but my favourite videos are watching you create art. I love seeing the process of how you develop a scene
Thanks ever so much!!
Congrats Helen! You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs and my go to when I need creative inspiration. Your videos are always so relaxing and peaceful. Keep up the great work!
I'm really touched - thank you so much!!
Happy New Year🎉
P.S. My mom's name was Helen. Helen Rose. I sure miss her.
That sounds perfect then! Hope you have fun! Thank you ever so much!
I am Helen Caton. (Pronounced Kay-tun) My mum is a genealogist, and that's an old family name.
I'm so glade you didn't give up after 6 months...this is my favorite type of post you do..love seeing how other artists approach there art pieces...
Thank you very much!
Congrats on 1 year on RUclips!! 🎉 🎉
Thank you!!
Love watching your videos and often treat myself to some of the materials you use. We have similar New Year’s resolutions. 🙏💜
Thank you!! Good luck to us!
Beautiful artwork, I enjoyed watching it develop.
Thank you!
Thanks ever so much! And for the ideas!
Keep on doing what you are doing - I really enjoy your art sessions on u tube. You resonate with so many of us who love making art but know we are not always going to produce something wonderful every time! I shall look forward to seeing what you do in the coming year.
Thanks so much! I can definitely be relied on to not produce wonderful art every time!!
I would hear in your review of art supplies why you like them eg they are very useful for shadows. And I love to see how people get ideas from their art books.
I'll try and remember to do this, thanks!
Hi Helen, congratulations on your 1yr YT well done 👏🏼 you are one of my favourites. I was surprised to hear that you've only been making videos for a year! Love your style, look forward to seeing more of you this coming year 🙏
I am so flattered! Thank you!
That is so lovely - thank you! I hope you achieve your dream!
Thank you! I have been trying to show everything - the good and the bad, so hopefully that helps!
Congratulations on a year and taking your art practice to a new level. I am a big fan of your videos, they are so relaxing and informative. Thank you so much for making this channel- keep the videos coming!
I really appreciate it - thank you for watching!!
This genuinely makes me so happy to read - thank you!!
Thanks ever so much! I'm glad they could do something positive!
Thanks ever so much Amanda!!
Happy YT anniversary!
Thank you!
I am five months late for the party 😄Congratulations for one year anniversary on RUclips ! I am a beginner. Your thoughts on new products are really helpful and inspiring. Your videos are agreeable and soothing with your voice and music. I am planning to watch all the videos in the past and future Thank you😊
Thank you so much!! Welcome! I'm so glad if you find anything helpful!
Thank you so much!
I know I've seen some of her videos a while back, but need to go and look again. That sounds a brilliant idea - thank you!!
Great video! I love this kind of mixed media experiment. Glad you're going to continue the channel. Happy New Year!
Thanks ever so much! Happy New Year!
Happy Anniversary & New Year! I still can’t believe you’ve only been at this a year! And also that you edit on your phone 😅 I can’t wait to watch your journey progress and unfold as you keep doing your thing 🤗💖✨
Hi! Thank you, and Happy New Year!! 'Low-tech-Helen' that's me! 😂
Really appreciate and inspired by your story in this one. Love the goals for the year ahead! Congrats 🎉
Thanks ever so much!
It’s been a very enjoyable year! Thank you for mentioning the software you learned on as I have been meaning to ask you for months! Lovely painting ❤
Thanks so much for watching!!
It was my first time here. You are very sweet and very talented. I love you addition of wee sheep. ❤️
Thanks ever so much!
Hi Helen! Happy Anniversary! I love watching your videos, bought a lot of stuff after watching you try it. :) I would love a video on how you store your supplies as I have really trouble doing that in my tiny art room. - If this isn't to personal! Best wishes, Julia
Hello! Thank you!
It is on my list of videos to do - I don't have a huge amount of space either.
stunning painting, it looks wonderful 😊😊
Thanks ever so much!
I surely related to so much of what you shared. Thank you for your channel. I enjoy your videos every time.
Thanks ever so much!
I honestly love love love your videos! They are so soothing and relaxing to watch! Happy anniversary and please keep it up!
That's so kind of you - thank you!
I can relate to you BIGTIME! Thank you for your videos. I just found you!❤
Thanks ever so much!!
Hi Helen , Where were you during lock-down , your channel would have been wonderful for us all , so when the next one comes along I will be hear waiting . Mike in Exeter xx
Ahaha! Thanks! I was definitely doing 'art', but having just moved into our house, it was the painting walls, and tiling the whole downstairs kind!
Helen I love your mixed media approach in this painting it is beautiful ! I learned a lot there. I do not use pastels like that . Thank you .x
Thank you! It's the first time I've used them like that too!
Hi Helen, It is a good practice to do art daily. I started this way and now I do it around 5 days a week sometimes 3. Congratulations on one year anniversary ❤. Maria
That's pretty impressive! Thanks so much!
I'm really enjoying your content, it's been very inspiring for me.
Thank you for the lovely feedback!
I absolutely love your painting.
Thanks!
@@helencryer oh yes, I like the idea of a bad art sketchbook!
I got a cheap Talens Art Creations one, in the colour I least like 😂
I really like your videos, so thank you!❤😊
Thank you!
Thanks!
Gosh! Thank you very much!!
thank you for sharing .
Thanks!
Happy Anniversary!
Shall look forward to that and all your future vids 😊@@helencryer
Happy anniversary hooray xoxoxoxo
Thanks 😁
Happy youtube birthday! Love the pic. I've only used watercolor paints but I'm thinking of getting some neocolour 2 pastels. What I don't get is when to use them in combination with the paints, what the advantage is. Perhaps you could talk about this in a future video. Thanks.
Thank you! I think it's about the textures you can get left behind from the Neocolor II's. If you were going to use them super smoothly, with all the marks dissolved away, I don't see that there's much difference to just using paint, but they're great for adding more intense areas, or areas of texture.
Congratulations!
Thanks!
Love your mixed media art! Wondering why you don't use watercolor paper
Thanks! Good question - because I'm scared! It's like using my cheapy sketch pads takes the pressure off having to make it good!
Love it. 🙂
Thanks!!
The Valley of Desolation?? So you basically decided to drive through Middle Earth? 😂😂😂
I honestly felt like I was in Lord of the Rings. At one point while I was at the back of a column of my kids and nieces and nephews, I actually said I felt like I was out with a bunch of hobbits!
