Some useful things that were not explained in this video: If you started a new video project, the Compositing tab may not be there. Press + on the tab layer at the top to add it in. Also, "This is how I have it set up" doesn't actually tell us how to set it up so first-time Blender users can easily follow along. Also, that checkmark click for "Use Nodes" was fast and not called out -- if that's important, it should probably be called out. To get the viewer, click the upper-left corner of the upper-right section (it's a tiny icon with a drop-down) to open Editor Type -- select UV Editor, use the middle drop-down icon to change it to Viewer Mode. Use Shift-A in the Compositor panel to add (if necessary) Movie Clip and Viewer nodes, and ensure they are linked at Image. You may need to select your clip in the Movie Clip node. My explanation is all kinda sloppy because I was figuring junk out as I went along, all to make sure I had the same setup in the first 30 seconds here... I dunno if there's any other "basics" basics to add. Now will try and watch the rest of the video, since things kinda match now. Blargh. x_x
Hey Good question! My edge output wasn't as clean as I like it to be so I stuck with the matte. You're correct that the edge output normally could get the job done as well. :)
@@mfShroom-z9x , sorry, should have specified, was looking for specific settings to render this project, but learned it on my own. Still can't get Quicktime to work. Care to answer how to get a render to work with Quicktime? I'm stumped.
How would you do this method with a live 3d backdrop (Ian Hubert has a great tutorial on combining 2d footage into a 3d environment, but you don't get the light wrap that you would get with this method)? Thoughts?

my clip doesnt show up in the masking or any other section than composite, i don t understand it. if i upload a movie or image sequence I can go to the composite and upload it there but it doesnt appear anywhere else why_
Yep. Look for the Movie Clip node. It's an import node All the node editors look the same. So, check if you're in the Compositor editor first before trying to find the Movie Clip node.
In the old days when it was just classrooms, this is the kind of instruction where I would find that I have nothing to follow along with I would already be so far behind my mind would take me to far away summers on a road trip a friend laughing our asses off and talking about how glad we were it was Friday under the 90 degree sun with ice cold beer and shots on the horizon, and snapping out of it when the lesson ends. Today I would be on the hook for $150,000.00 for those classes. Thank goodness I can just write a few words in the comments and move on.
Add a new workspace area (move the mouse to the corner of an area until the mouse turns into a cross, then drag a new area in) - then select UV editor and switch it to "Viewer Node" at the top centre.
First off: -Loading footage/image into the bottom section doesn't load it into the viewer in t he top right and how to do this is never explained. -When the Composition tab is clicked, there is nothing there, most likely due there not being an image in the Viewer, from the previous problem I listed. -the tutorial becomes utterly unusable at this point. 1/10 - Did not enjoy.
Blender's Video editor is like the "Eclipse IDE" of video editing. No books or videos or anything will help. The only way to learn this is brute force pioneering by trudging through it with a lot of trial and error, pointing and clicking passively while watching a movie, until about 1,000,000,000,000 function correlations have been absorbed and then you're ready to fly.
when i render with the compositor, it doesn't do anything when i render (I'm on mac) can somebody help me fix it? Edit: it doesn't work for animations by the way
Great tutorial. I am a Nuke and AE artist really trying out blender for the first time. Looks straight forward enough. Does it handle motion blur pretty well? Like hands waving and such?
There were a lot of unspoken things happening here. For someone new to compositing, this was really confusing. I appreciate the tutorial, but man, if it's basic you gotta say what you're doing.

Thank you so much, I was so lost, now I am slightly less lost :D
wow, Kenan Proffitt with CG cookie, so cool.

These 7 min gonna be 1 hour in the timeframe I exist in.
This was for a photo though?
Great tips to get high quality separation and merging!
I didn't get everything. But the result looks amazing.
No edges, no halos. Just perfect! :) Thanx for sharing! 😉👍
Great job! Thanks.
I don't see anything when I go to the compositing
How to bring the composited movie clip to the editor

this is excellent :D
great example how to over-complicate things
thanks for this! none of the keying nodes are available in my blender v3.4.1, do i have to get an add-on to make this work? thanks
Liked this,it helped ☺️
Why did you use the dilate/erode node with the matt instead of just using the edges output of the key?

Ah, was literaly going to ask the same question. Thanks both (for the question and the answer) :)
Hi, I'm new to Blender. I followed your tutorial, but I don't know how to render this. How do I render it?
You have to press controll + f12

please where can i get backgrounds vfx

I have same problem, when composition tab is clicked there I don't see anything
First learn blender basic, then come to tutorials like this. Community is huge, blender is a huge software too.
Perfect tutorial!!
can i put 3d stuff instead of just a photo in the background?
Yes, of course.

frustrated to not see the final moving video ... Still usefull thanks for sharing
I have problems rendering it, Someone help me.
I dont know how to render
Beautiful boy!)
The footage is lagging incredibly everytime i scrub through. Its driving me insane. Any reasons?
How can we do this in a live video?
When we are recording it
Ask the people who shot Mandelorian. :)
you could use OBS is you are to stream or record
Definitely easier to just do this in after effects and bring into blender already keyed
How about tracking then?

It handles it ok. I would composite in another software and just do the 3D stuff in Blender

you cant make a tutorial video assuming your students are already pro....

why do a 2d greenscreen in a 3d program smh
