I was fortunate enough to see & hear Albert Collins and the Ice-Breakers many times during their prime era in the late 1970s and 1980s at Fitzgerald's - a club in Berwyn, IL, not far from the West Side. No one could do what Albert did - his entire sound and approach were unique and so was his band. Still remember Albert trailing his 200-ft. long guitar cable going outside to play to passers-by on the street. Think Albert and his band sound powerful coming out of your stereo? Yep, but try sitting ten feet in front of the stage when they were in the house!

Blues guitar at its finest !! I never realized he capoed his strings till I saw his videos/that explains why his tone is not like anyone else's- it makes the string vibrations different !!!###

Reese Wynans was playing on my Hammond B3 for this concert. I had rented it out for the filming of Austin City Limits. I got a call that there was a glitch in the Leslie cabinet and went down tweak the issue. I fixed the tube issue and cranked organ up and started playing on it. I turned around and Albert was standing there with a big grin on his face. He was an exceptionally nice man and a wonderfully incendiary and expressive entertainer. The horn section were truly the best guys in Austin at the time. Derek O'Brien was smooth understated fire. Albert's rhythm section were always funky and in the pocket. Albert was the Master of the Telecaster for a reason. His ability to utilize dynamics in concerts was legendary.

Albert came into Detroit, and played at the fabled St. Andrews Hall......late '80's. I think it was a Belkin show. I never missed a downtown concert, being a DJ at 2 of the hottest downtown Clubs. About 4 mins. into his stage entrance, the lights changed, and so did I.
All those rock concerts at COBO, the Eastown, the Grande.........became a blur of rock music. Same old, etc.
When Albert performed, for that audience, that night, he played the Blues, and the Telecaster. He changed lives......................and than thanked the entire audience, for taking time to come see him. That, ladies and gentleman, was/IS Albert Collins..

Back digging my man Albert again. I lived in NOLA 1966-76 and not a day goes by that I don't miss it. Place got into my soul and my bones. They never heard of red beans n'rice anywhere else and nobody knows how to make a sandwich anything like a Po Boy. Ask for a shrimp and oyster combination and they just stare at you, they only know what sliced white bread is, and Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Poppa Stoppa and Longhair are totally unbeknownst to them. I know exactly what it means to miss NOLA!

Yeah,Derek O'Brien ( and Denny Freeman) are 2 great "under the radar " TX guitarists who are just as talented as JLV/SRV and all the rest.I followed AC out of Antone's and back in again a couple times when he did his famous unwinding cord walk outside of the club.Once he stopped traffic outside a club in Chicago where the door led directly out to a main drag, the folks in the cars had no idea what was going on.Precious memories! We loved ya Albert!

I'm no expert on drumming but I think the drummer here is doing what Albert wants him to. There is a long history of bluesmen giving the drummer the business if he plays at the wrong time, or plays too much etc. There're some vids of Albert King doing it, and Freddie King, and Lightnin Hopkins looked like lasers were going to shoot out of his eyes at a drummer on a video, or it could have been the bass player. Either way, the fact that Mr. Collins didn't turn around and hit the drummer with his guitar is enough for me to know that he wanted the syncopated funk he was playing.

I believe Albert wanted the drummer to do all that crazy shit . They rehearsed for sure and it was most likely part of the arrangement. He didn't want a typical in the pocket beat for this one. It's good to add a different touch to blues which can become repetetive at times.
